Windows 7 error 0x800745D usually indicates that setup, backup, or a file-copy operation could not reliably read from or write to storage. First copy the code exactly: Microsoft’s quoted backup message uses 0x8007045D, not 0x800745D. The two strings are easy to transpose, but they should not be treated as formally identical without checking the original message.
Back up important files, then isolate the situation. Installation failures during “expanding files” point toward damaged media or a storage path problem; backup and copy failures require testing the source file, destination drive, cable, and port. The procedure below starts with low-risk checks and moves toward disk replacement or professional testing only when failures persist.

What the code means and why the spelling matters
An I/O-device error occurs when Windows cannot complete a read or write request. That request may involve the DVD or USB installer, the internal disk receiving Windows, a removable backup disk, a cable, or a controller port. The hexadecimal text alone does not identify which component is at fault.

There is an important transcription issue with this title. A Microsoft Q&A backup case quotes 0x8007045D as the I/O error, while a Windows 7 installation report records 0x800745D. Ask Windows to show the complete message again, photograph it, or copy it into a text file before changing hardware. A single swapped digit can send you to the wrong troubleshooting path.

Identify the context before choosing a fix
| Where the error appears | Most useful first investigation | Risk and cost |
|---|---|---|
| Windows 7 setup, while “expanding files” | Recreate or replace the installation media, disconnect extra hardware, then test the target disk, cable, and port | Media replacement is inexpensive and low risk; hardware testing may require spare parts |
| Windows Backup or a file copy | Note the file and destination, test another connection and storage device, then check the drive for errors | Copying to another disk is low risk; continuing to use an intermittent disk risks data loss |
| A running Windows installation with broader corruption symptoms | Back up first, then use Microsoft’s general DISM-then-SFC sequence where supported | System repair is reversible in many cases, but a backup is essential |
Before troubleshooting: protect your data
Do not begin by repeatedly retrying a failing disk. If the drive is intermittently readable, copy irreplaceable documents, photos, and account data to a separate disk or another computer first. Microsoft’s repair guidance explicitly says to back up personal files before trying its solutions.
- Use a destination that is physically different from the suspect drive.
- If Windows Backup is the operation that fails, copy the most important folders manually or from another system rather than relying on the same failing job.
- Do not initialize, format, or delete partitions on a disk that may contain the only copy of your data.
- Record which source, destination, cable, port, and file produced the error. This makes an intermittent fault easier to reproduce.
Fix 0x800745D during Windows 7 installation
1. Confirm the installer and edition
Use a known-good Windows 7 SP1 installation DVD or bootable USB that matches your license, edition, and processor architecture. A scratched DVD, incomplete download, or incorrectly created USB can fail after the initial files have been copied, exactly when setup begins expanding them. If you created the media yourself, recreate it from a trusted Windows 7 SP1 image rather than assuming the first copy is valid.
Do not mix a 32-bit installer with a 64-bit license expectation or use media whose provenance you cannot verify. If a replacement disc or USB succeeds on the same computer, the original media was the likely cause; if both fail at the same point, continue with the storage-path checks.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2. Disconnect nonessential devices
Shut down the computer and unplug external hard disks, card readers, printers, webcams, hubs, and other USB devices. Leave connected only the keyboard, mouse if needed, installer, and intended target disk. Microsoft’s installation guidance uses the same isolation principle: unplug nonessential hardware. Extra devices can change disk numbering or provide another failing path for setup to probe.

3. Prefer a USB 2 connection for legacy hardware
If you are installing from USB, try a native USB 2 port instead of a USB 3 port or a hub. Older Windows 7 media may not contain the storage drivers needed by every newer USB controller. A direct motherboard port is preferable to an extension cable or front-panel hub. If the computer has only USB 3 ports, use a freshly created installer and consult the motherboard documentation for the port that supports legacy USB operation.
4. Check the target disk, cable, and SATA port
Turn off the computer before opening the case. Verify that the disk selected in setup is the disk you intend to erase or install to. Reseat its data and power connections, then try a different SATA data cable and a different motherboard SATA port. A marginal cable or connector can pass short reads but fail under the sustained activity of setup.
Only change one item at a time and retry the installation. If changing the cable fixes the problem, replace the cable rather than continuing to trust it. If the error follows the disk to another port and another cable, treat the disk as suspect. If it stays with one port, the port or motherboard controller needs further testing.

5. Review BIOS storage and boot settings
Enter firmware setup by pressing the key shown during startup, commonly Delete, F2, or a manufacturer-specific key. Confirm that the intended disk is detected and that the installer is booting in the mode expected by the existing configuration. Review SATA-controller mode and UEFI versus legacy boot settings against the computer or motherboard documentation; do not switch modes casually if another operating system is already installed, because an existing installation may no longer boot.

Save a setting change, retry once, and record the result. If the disk is absent from firmware setup, Windows setup cannot repair that connection: check power, cabling, the disk itself, and the motherboard port before trying more software steps.
6. Test with a different disk or computer when available
A spare disk can distinguish installer failure from target-disk failure. If the same media installs to a known-good disk in the same computer, the original target disk or its connection is implicated. If the media fails on another computer at the same expansion stage, recreate or replace the media. These controlled substitutions are more informative than repeating the identical failed installation.
Fix the error during backup or file copying
1. Record the source, destination, and exact file
Write down whether the failing item is a local file, a network location, or a WebCache file, and whether the destination is an external disk, USB flash drive, optical media, or another internal volume. The Microsoft Q&A case associated with the I/O message involved Windows Backup reading a WebCache file, but that single report does not establish that WebCache is the cause in every case.
2. Isolate the removable drive and connection
Stop the backup, safely disconnect the destination, and reconnect it directly to a different computer port. Avoid hubs and extension leads. Then try another cable if the device uses a detachable cable. If the drive works through one port but not another, the port, cable, or power delivery is more likely than the file itself.

Run the drive’s built-in error-checking tool before starting another large backup. In Windows 7, open Computer, right-click the affected drive, choose Properties, open the Tools tab, and select Check now under Error-checking. Follow the prompts and allow a restart if Windows requests one. Do not treat a single clean check as proof that an intermittently failing disk is healthy.
3. Try another destination
Use a different external disk or an internal volume with sufficient free space. If the same source file copies successfully elsewhere, the original destination or its connection is implicated. If the same file fails everywhere while other files copy normally, the source file or source disk needs attention. If many unrelated files fail, suspect the source disk, controller, cable, or destination rather than one damaged file.
4. Decide when to stop using the disk
An intermittent hard disk may appear usable for small files and still fail during a long backup. The Microsoft Q&A follow-up reports that one user ultimately replaced an intermittent hard disk. That is an individual experience, not a universal diagnosis, but repeated I/O failures justify replacing the disk or having it professionally tested. Do not make the failing disk the only location for a new backup.

The cited Microsoft pages target newer Windows releases, so this is general repair guidance rather than Windows 7-specific confirmation. Windows 7 may not support every DISM servicing option in the same way. If DISM reports that the command or source is unavailable, do not force it; use Windows 7 installation media and Microsoft’s Windows 7-specific support procedures, or continue with hardware and media isolation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use a clean boot to rule out software interference
Microsoft also recommends a clean boot for installation or upgrade failures. A clean boot starts Windows with non-Microsoft services and startup programs disabled, reducing the chance that backup software, disk utilities, or security software is holding a file open.
- Press
Windows key + R, typemsconfig, and press Enter. - On the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services, then choose Disable all.
- Open the Startup tab and disable nonessential startup items.
- Apply the changes, restart, and retry the failing installation or copy.
- After testing, return to
msconfig, choose Normal startup, and re-enable services and startup items in groups to find a conflict.
A clean boot cannot repair a bad disk, cable, or installer. It is useful when the same operation succeeds only after third-party services are removed from the equation.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming the title’s code is exact: verify whether the message says 0x800745D or 0x8007045D.
- Replacing the disk before saving data: copy important files while the disk is still readable.
- Testing several variables at once: changing media, cable, port, and BIOS mode together prevents you from learning which change mattered.
- Continuing a backup to an intermittent disk: a completed-looking job is not useful if the destination cannot reliably read the files later.
- Changing UEFI, legacy, or SATA mode without a record: write down the original setting so you can restore it if an existing installation stops booting.
- Treating a system-file scan as a hardware test: SFC and DISM address component corruption; they cannot make a failing cable or disk reliable.
When replacement or professional testing is justified
Replacement is reasonable when failures follow the same disk across multiple cables and ports, when error-checking reports problems, or when the disk repeatedly disconnects or produces intermittent read errors. Replace installation media when a fresh, verified image succeeds on the same hardware. Seek professional testing when the data is irreplaceable, the disk is making unusual noises, or the fault persists after known-good media, cables, ports, and a second disk have been tried.
Windows 7 is out of mainstream support, so compatible hardware and driver availability vary by computer. Keep the exact edition, architecture, and SP1 status in mind when obtaining installation media, and preserve a verified backup before attempting another installation.
