“0x800704sd” is not a documented Windows 7 error code. Recheck the characters in the message before changing anything. The most likely transcription is 0x8007045D, the Windows ERROR_IO_DEVICE message “The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error,” or 0x80070005, the E_ACCESSDENIED “access denied” error. They have different causes and require different fixes. Record the exact code, what you were doing, and which drive or device was involved, then follow the matching path below.
First, verify the code and the failing operation
A single character changes the diagnosis. Windows 7 users commonly report the two codes below while copying files, installing software, running Windows Update, or working with optical media.

| Code | Meaning | Typical trigger | First area to investigate | Risk of the next step |
|---|---|---|---|---|
0x8007045D |
I/O-device error (ERROR_IO_DEVICE) |
Copying to or from an external hard drive, reading or burning optical media, or another operation that cannot complete a read/write request | USB port, cable, hub, power, disk, optical disc, or drive hardware | Repeated reads or repair attempts can worsen a failing disk; protect data first |
0x80070005 |
Access denied (E_ACCESSDENIED) |
Windows Update, installation, upgrade, or a task that must change protected files, folders, or registry entries | Administrator permissions, file and folder ACLs, security software, or Group Policy | Permission changes can affect system servicing; use an elevated command window and change only the documented locations |
Write down these details before troubleshooting:
- The complete hexadecimal code, including every character after
0x. - The action that failed: copying, opening, installing, updating, upgrading, burning, or reading.
- The source and destination drive letters.
- Whether the device is internal SATA, USB, network-connected, or optical.
- Whether the same file or operation works with another device or destination.
If the message really says 0x800704sd, take a screenshot or copy the text from the dialog. Do not assume that an “s” belongs in a hexadecimal code; valid hexadecimal characters are 0–9 and A–F.
Fix 0x8007045D: the I/O-device error
Microsoft identifies 0x8007045D as ERROR_IO_DEVICE: “The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.” In Windows 7-era support cases it appears when copying files to an external hard disk and when burning or reading optical media. The error means Windows could not complete a request through the storage path; it does not, by itself, prove that the disk is permanently dead.

1. Protect readable files before repairing anything
If the affected disk contains important photographs, documents, or backups, copy the files that still open to a separate, known-good disk before running repair commands. Start with the smallest, most valuable files and work in batches so one unreadable item does not stop the entire transfer.
- Do not format, initialize, or repartition the disk while you are still trying to recover files.
- Do not repeatedly retry a clicking, disconnecting, or very slow disk. Repeated power cycles can make a marginal device less reliable.
- If Windows offers to format the device, cancel the prompt unless you have a verified backup and intentionally want to erase it.
- Keep a note of which folders copied successfully and which produced the error; that information helps distinguish a bad file from a failing connection or disk.
Microsoft support discussions recommend checking the disk and considering Safe Mode, but neither step guarantees data recovery. If the data is irreplaceable and the disk is physically failing, stop experimenting and use a professional recovery service.
2. Eliminate the USB connection as the cause
- Shut down the copy operation and safely eject the external device if Windows allows it.
- Reconnect it directly to a different USB port on the computer. Avoid front-panel ports and unpowered hubs while testing; connect directly to a rear motherboard port on a desktop when available.
- Replace the USB cable with a known-good cable of the same connector type. A cable can provide enough power for the device to appear in Explorer while still causing read/write errors.
- If the drive has a separate power adapter, reseat both ends and test another compatible outlet. Do not substitute an adapter with an unverified voltage or polarity.
- Disconnect other high-power USB devices temporarily, then retry a small file copy.
A device that works reliably through one port and cable but fails through another points to the connection path rather than the disk itself. If it fails everywhere, continue with the isolation tests instead of replacing parts at random.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3. Test a different source and destination
Copy one known-good file to a different destination disk. Then copy a different known-good file from the same source. These two tests separate a damaged source file from a failing destination:
- Only one file fails: the file or its location may be unreadable. Try another file from the same folder and note whether the error follows the file.
- Every file fails to the same destination: suspect the destination cable, port, power supply, or disk.
- The same external disk fails on another computer: the disk or its enclosure is more likely than Windows 7 on the original computer.
- The disk works on another computer: investigate the original computer’s USB controller, drivers, power management, or operating-system installation.
Use a known-good destination with enough free space. A full destination can produce a different error, so check its capacity before interpreting the result.

4. Check the disk after your data is safe
Windows 7 can check a volume for file-system errors from Computer: right-click the drive, choose Properties, open the Tools tab, and select Check now under Error-checking. Select the options to automatically fix file-system errors and scan for bad sectors only when you have a backup and can tolerate a long scan.
For an advanced check, open Start, type cmd, right-click cmd.exe, choose Run as administrator, and use the correct drive letter. For example, replace X: with the affected volume:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
chkdsk X: /f
The /f option repairs logical file-system errors. A surface scan with /r is more intensive and can take many hours on a large or damaged disk:
chkdsk X: /r
Do not run a repair scan on a disk that is actively failing if the files have not been copied. If Windows reports that the volume is in use, allow it to schedule the check for the next restart only after confirming that you have protected the data.
5. Use Safe Mode to rule out software interference
Restart the computer and press F8 before the Windows logo appears. Choose Safe Mode, connect only the essential storage device, and repeat a small read or copy test. Safe Mode loads a minimal set of drivers and startup programs.

6. When the problem is optical media
For a CD or DVD read or burn failure, try a different disc from a reputable batch and clean, undamaged media. When burning, select a slower speed than the maximum advertised by the drive. A disc that burns at one speed can fail at another because of media quality, calibration, or the drive’s condition.
Microsoft support guidance also points to checking the burner’s firmware and considering a malfunctioning burner. Install firmware only from the computer or drive manufacturer and only for the exact model; an incorrect firmware image can disable the drive. If multiple known-good discs fail to read or burn while the same discs work in another computer, replacement of the optical drive becomes reasonable after the firmware and connection checks.
7. Decide whether the device needs replacement
Do not replace a disk solely because one copy failed. Replacement is justified when the device repeatedly disconnects, makes unusual mechanical noises, fails the same tests on another computer, or produces I/O errors with multiple cables, ports, files, and destinations. Preserve the data first. For an optical drive, replacement is more likely when different discs, slower speeds, and current firmware do not change the result.
Fix 0x80070005: the access-denied error
Microsoft documents 0x80070005 as E_ACCESSDENIED, a general access-denied condition. During Windows Update, the process may be unable to access a required file, folder, or registry entry. The correct fix is to identify what was denied rather than granting broad permissions to the entire system.
1. Confirm that the task requires elevation
Sign in with an administrator account. For a one-time elevated action, right-click the installer, Command Prompt, or update utility and choose Run as administrator. If the computer is managed by an employer, school, or domain, a Group Policy rule may intentionally block the change; contact the administrator instead of attempting to bypass it.

Retry once after elevation. If the same code appears during Windows Update, continue to the log and permission checks below.
2. Find the denied object in CBS.log
Windows servicing records many update permission failures in C:WindowsLogsCBSCBS.log. Open the file in Notepad as an administrator and search for terms such as Access is denied, 0x80070005, or the update package name. Note the exact file or directory mentioned immediately around the failure.
Do not change permissions on an unrelated folder simply because its name appears in the log. The object, account, and operation in the log determine which repair is appropriate.
3. Check security software and policy restrictions
Antivirus, endpoint-security, controlled-folder features, and Group Policy can block Windows Update from changing protected locations. Review the security product’s quarantine and event history for a blocked Windows servicing process. If your organization manages the computer, ask whether a policy intentionally restricts updates.

- Step 1: Boot from the USB Flash Drive - Insert the USB flash drive into an available USB port on your computer. - Turn on your computer or restart it if it’s already on. - As the computer starts, press the key that opens the boot menu. This key varies by manufacturer and model, but it’s often F2, F10, Esc, or Delete. - In the BIOS/UEFI setup menu, locate the Boot Options or Boot Order section. - Use the arrow keys to select your USB drive and move it to the top of the boot priority list. - Save your changes and exit the BIOS/UEFI setup. Your computer will now boot from the USB flash drive.

4. Reset permissions on the documented update folders
Microsoft’s Windows Update guidance for this scenario includes resetting permissions on %windir%WinSxS and %windir%SoftwareDistribution with icacls. Before changing access control lists, create a system restore point if System Protection is enabled and close all programs.
- Open Start, type
cmd, right-click cmd.exe, and select Run as administrator. - Run the reset command for the servicing store:
icacls "%windir%WinSxS" /reset /T /C
- Run the reset command for the Windows Update download and database folder:
icacls "%windir%SoftwareDistribution" /reset /T /C
- Read the output. The
/Tswitch processes subfolders, and/Ccontinues when an individual item reports an error. Record any paths that could not be processed. - Restart Windows and retry Windows Update.
These commands are not a general license to reset permissions throughout C:Windows. If the log identifies a different object, use the Microsoft procedure for that object or obtain administrator assistance.
5. Verify Windows Update services
Open Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services. Confirm that the services required by your update process are not disabled and can start. Windows Update commonly depends on the Windows Update service and Background Intelligent Transfer Service. Restart a service only after noting its current state and any error shown in its properties.
If a service will not start, record the exact message and event-log entry. A service failure is a separate problem from a folder permission error and may require repairing system files or correcting a dependency.
6. Run System File Checker
Open an elevated Command Prompt and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait for verification to reach 100 percent. Restart the computer and retry the original operation. System File Checker can repair protected Windows files, but it does not repair a failing external disk or automatically fix every servicing permission problem.

If the code appears while installing an application, upgrading Windows, or applying a major update and you are not sure which path applies, use this order. Stop as soon as the error is resolved.
- Recheck the exact code and write down the installer or update name.
- Disconnect nonessential USB drives, phones, printers, memory cards, and other external hardware. Leave the keyboard, mouse, display, and network connection attached.
- Sign in with an administrator account and start the installer or update check with Run as administrator when that option is available.
- Run
sfc /scannowfrom an elevated Command Prompt and restart. - Perform a clean boot to prevent third-party startup programs and services from locking files. Use Start > Run, enter
msconfig, hide Microsoft services before disabling non-Microsoft entries, restart, and test. Restore the normal startup configuration after testing. - Review
C:WindowsLogsCBSCBS.logfor the denied object if the code is 0x80070005. - If the operation accesses a USB or optical device and the code is 0x8007045D, return to the cable, port, media, and second-computer tests instead of changing Windows permissions.
What not to do
- Do not treat 0x8007045D and 0x80070005 as interchangeable. One identifies an I/O path failure; the other identifies denied access.
- Do not format an external disk merely because Windows offers to format it.
- Do not grant “Everyone” full control to the entire Windows directory or registry. Broad permissions can weaken the system and still fail to repair the specific denied object.
- Do not install random firmware or driver packages whose model does not exactly match your device.
- Do not run repeated surface scans on a disk with irreplaceable data before copying what is readable.
- Do not leave antivirus or other security protection disabled after a diagnostic test.
Optional shortcut after the manual checks
If the 0x8007045D tests point to a USB, storage, or other device-driver problem, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan more than 100 devices for outdated, corrupted, or missing drivers, install official drivers, show current and recommended versions, and provide driver backup, restore, and scheduled scans. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7; its 2-day free trial does not require a credit card, after which a subscription is required. Results vary, and no utility repairs every hardware failure.
When to seek hands-on help
Escalate to a qualified technician when a disk is clicking, disappearing, overheating, or failing on multiple computers; when files are irreplaceable and no complete backup exists; when an optical drive fails with multiple known-good discs after firmware checks; or when a managed computer’s policy prevents updates. Bring the exact code, the operation that triggered it, the drive letter, the tests you performed, and any relevant CBS.log or event-log entries. That record prevents another person from repeating risky tests and helps them replace only the component that has actually been isolated.
