Windows 7 error 0x8007045D (sometimes typed as 08007045d) means Windows could not complete a read or write because of an I/O device error. The failure may be in the source drive, destination drive, USB connection, optical disc, burner, cable or port. Protect important files first, then isolate the failing endpoint, try known-good media and connections, run chkdsk X: /r on the affected volumes, and run sfc /scannow if Windows components may be damaged. Persistent errors on the same physical drive should be treated as a storage-hardware problem and escalated to data recovery or drive replacement.

What Windows 7 error 0x8007045D means

Microsoft defines error 0x8007045D as ERROR_IO_DEVICE: “The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.” In practical terms, an operation asked Windows to read data from, or write data to, a device and the read/write path failed. The hexadecimal code does not identify the failed component by itself.

Depending on what you were doing, the path can include the source hard drive, destination hard drive, external USB storage, USB cable, USB port, optical disc, DVD/CD burner or another device attached during setup. The same code can therefore appear during a file copy, Windows Backup or System Image, a restore, an optical-disc burn, a USB transfer or Windows installation.

The code is not, by itself, a malware diagnosis. It is also not proof that a drive has failed permanently: a defective disc, an incompatible disc brand, a faulty cable or a transient port problem can produce the same message. Conversely, a repeated error from one physical disk deserves caution because additional retries can make a deteriorating device harder to read.

Protect data before troubleshooting

If the operation involves files you cannot replace, stop repeatedly clicking Retry. Copy the most important readable files to a separate, known-good destination before running lengthy tests. Copy in small batches if a large transfer stops partway through, and record which folders or files fail. Do not format, initialize or repartition the suspected source drive while valuable data remains on it.

Write down the exact operation and every endpoint. Note the drive letter or device used as the source, the destination path, whether the device is internal or USB, and whether the message includes another code such as 0x8078012D. This information prevents you from checking the wrong volume and helps distinguish a media problem from a Windows-file problem.

Windows warns about file-system corruption Run CHKDSK on the named volume, then retry the operation Windows has detected a condition that requires a disk check.
Other Windows features also malfunction Run sfc /scannow from an elevated Command Prompt Protected Windows system files may be corrupted.
Setup or recovery cannot read the media Disconnect nonessential devices and try legitimate installation or recovery media from another USB port or drive Media, port, cable or attached-device interference.

Step 1: Remove connection and peripheral variables

  1. Shut down or close the operation that produced the error. Leave only the keyboard, mouse and the device required for the test connected.
  2. Disconnect nonessential USB drives, card readers, printers, cameras and hubs. Microsoft’s installation guidance specifically recommends removing nonessential devices during setup.
  3. Reconnect the affected USB device directly to a different port on the computer. Avoid a hub for this test. If the computer has both front and rear ports, try the other group.
  4. Replace the USB or data cable with a known-good cable of the correct type. A cable that powers a device can still fail during sustained data transfer.
  5. Retry the same operation without changing anything else. If it succeeds on another port or cable, the original connection path is the likely cause; continue using the working path and replace the faulty part.

Do not assume the destination is healthy simply because Windows can open it in Explorer. A short file copy can succeed while a long backup exposes an intermittent read/write fault. Test with a small, noncritical file first, then observe whether the failure follows the source device or the destination.

Step 2: Run CHKDSK on the affected volume

Microsoft’s Windows 7 backup guidance recommends running CHKDSK with the /r option on the source or target volume when 0x8078012D and 0x8007045D occur together. Microsoft also advises running Chkdsk.exe when Windows reports file-system corruption.

  1. Click Start, choose All Programs, open Accessories, right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  2. Type chkdsk X: /r, replacing X: with the drive letter shown for the affected volume, and press Enter. For example, a volume mounted as E: uses chkdsk E: /r.
  3. Read the volume label and drive letter in the output before proceeding. Running the command against the wrong letter checks a different disk and does not diagnose the failing endpoint.
  4. If Windows says the volume is in use and asks whether to schedule the check for the next restart, type Y, close open applications and restart. The check then runs before Windows loads.
  5. Allow the examination to finish. On a large or troubled disk it can take a long time. When Windows starts again, retry the original copy, backup or restore once.

Run the command separately on both endpoints when a backup uses two disks. A clean result on the source does not clear the destination, and the reverse is also true. If CHKDSK reports errors and the same physical disk continues to return I/O failures, copy recoverable data before attempting more repairs.

Step 3: Check Windows system files with SFC

If Windows features fail in addition to the original transfer, protected system files may be damaged. From the same administrator Command Prompt, run:

sfc /scannow

Microsoft states that this command scans protected system files and replaces corrupted files with cached copies. Wait for the verification to reach 100 percent, then read the final message. Restart Windows if requested and retry the original operation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If SFC cannot complete normally, try the scan in Safe Mode and review the details recorded in CBS.log under the Windows servicing logs. Safe Mode loads fewer drivers and services, which can remove software interference while SFC checks the protected files. SFC repairs Windows components; it cannot repair a physically failing disk, a bad USB cable or defective optical media.

Step 4: Troubleshoot Windows Backup and System Image failures

A backup failure that shows both 0x8078012D and 0x8007045D involves a read/write path somewhere between the source volume and the backup target. Do not assume the target is at fault merely because the message appears while the image is being created.

  1. Identify every source volume included in the image and the exact destination volume.
  2. Run chkdsk X: /r on each relevant source volume and on the destination, using the correct drive letter for each one.
  3. Disconnect other external storage and retry with the backup target connected directly to a different USB port and, if possible, with a different cable.
  4. If the target itself produces errors in ordinary file copies, stop using it for the image and choose a known-good destination. Keep the original source untouched until its important files are secured.
  5. After a successful image, verify that Windows reports completion and retain the media in a safe place. A backup that never completes is not a usable recovery plan.

When only one folder or volume consistently stops the image, test that source independently with a file copy and CHKDSK. When failures occur at different points on every attempt, suspect an unstable connection or disk rather than a single damaged file.

Step 5: Handle optical-disc errors

For CD or DVD operations, Microsoft support identifies several possibilities to test: the disc brand may be incompatible with the burner, the disc may be defective, the burner may have malfunctioned, or the selected burn speed may be unsupported. These are diagnostic possibilities, not proof of which part failed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Use a new, undamaged disc from a different brand. Do not continue testing with a stack that has already produced failures.
  2. Select a slower burn speed in the burning program instead of the maximum advertised speed.
  3. Clean fingerprints or dust from the disc and make sure the burner’s tray closes fully.
  4. Try the same disc image in another compatible burner if one is available. If multiple known-good discs fail in the original burner, the burner or its connection becomes more likely.
  5. If the burn succeeds elsewhere, keep the working media and burner combination for recovery tasks.

Do not infer that a hard drive is defective solely because an optical burn failed. Optical media and the burner form a separate read/write path.

Step 6: Repair setup or recovery-media read failures

When Windows 7 setup or recovery cannot read its source, disconnect every nonessential peripheral and retry. A device attached during setup can interfere with device detection or compete for a port. Move the installation USB or external drive to another direct port and test the media on another computer if available.

Microsoft support identifies Windows 7 installation media, a USB flash drive and a system-repair disc as ways to enter recovery options. Use legitimate media that matches the installed Windows edition and architecture, and retain the product key. Marketplace listings vary, so a listing is not automatically proof that the media is licensed or suitable for your installation.

If one recovery disc or flash drive repeatedly produces the I/O error while another known-good recovery source reads normally, replace the failing media. If every source fails on the same computer and port tests do not help, investigate the optical drive, USB controller or internal storage before repeatedly reinstalling Windows.

Step 7: Isolate the failing endpoint with controlled tests

The fastest way to narrow the cause is to change one variable at a time. Keep a short record of each attempt: source, destination, port, cable or disc, and result.

  • Error follows the source: The same files or drive fail when copied to two different destinations. Prioritize copying the most important readable data and evaluating that source disk.
  • Error follows the destination: Several known-good sources fail when writing to one external drive, disc or port. Test the destination with another cable, port and computer before relying on it for backups.
  • Error follows the cable or port: The operation succeeds after replacing one connection component. Retire the failing cable or avoid the unreliable port.
  • Error occurs only during optical burning: Concentrate on disc brand, burn speed and the burner rather than changing Windows system files.
  • Error appears with Windows features as well: Complete CHKDSK first, then run SFC from an elevated prompt and review its result.

This isolation approach avoids replacing a healthy drive when the actual fault is a low-cost cable or incompatible disc.

When repeated errors indicate a hardware problem

If the same physical drive repeatedly returns I/O errors after you have tried another cable, another port, known-good media and CHKDSK, stop treating the problem as a simple Windows setting. Prioritize data recovery and plan to replace the affected storage device. The cited Microsoft guidance establishes that the error is an I/O failure, but it does not provide a universal pass/fail health test for every disk.

Do not keep forcing full scans or image attempts on a drive that is becoming less readable when the data matters. Use the drive only long enough to copy files that still open, then work from a replacement destination. If the drive contains irreplaceable information, a professional recovery service may be safer than repeated home experiments.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Running chkdsk on the wrong drive letter and assuming the source was checked.
  • Testing only one USB port or continuing to use a hub during diagnosis.
  • Retrying a failed optical burn with the same disc brand and maximum speed.
  • Formatting a destination or source before confirming that needed files are backed up.
  • Assuming SFC can repair a mechanical or electronic disk failure.
  • Using recovery media of an unknown edition or architecture and interpreting a media mismatch as proof that the computer is broken.
  • Disconnecting the destination while a backup or image is still running.

Optional shortcut after the manual fixes

As an optional shortcut, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements, invalid redirects and shared DLL files, and can offer settings tweaks, temporary-file cleanup, vulnerability checks and an app-crash log. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7, and has a free trial by category for at least two days before a paid subscription; results vary and no utility repairs every crash.

When to stop troubleshooting

You have a practical stopping point when the error disappears after changing a cable, port or disc, or after CHKDSK and SFC complete and the original operation succeeds. If the error remains tied to one physical drive despite those tests, protect the data that can still be read and replace or professionally recover the device instead of repeating the same failed operation.
