It is a storage-path failure, not one universal Windows setting. The failing part may be a hard-disk sector, external-drive enclosure, USB cable or port, controller, optical disc, burner, or a particular source file.
Protect readable data first, then isolate the scenario. Test connections and the device on another computer before attempting repairs that write to the disk. Use chkdsk /r only after important files are safe, and treat repeated failures across known-good connections as a possible hardware or media problem rather than as evidence that Windows 7 needs a registry tweak.

What error 0x8007045D means
Microsoft defines error 0x8007045D as “The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.” An I/O request is a read or write operation. Windows asked a storage path for data or asked it to save data, and a device in that path did not complete the operation.
The code identifies the failed operation, not the defective component. A request can travel through the application, Windows 7, a storage controller, a USB or SATA connection, an enclosure, and the disk or optical media. A problem at any point can produce the same number. That is why a fix that helps a DVD burn may do nothing for an external hard-disk transfer.

Where the error commonly appears
- Copying files to or from an external hard disk or USB storage.
- Reading one damaged file or one unreadable sector.
- Burning a DVD or creating a backup on optical media.
- Installing Windows 7 when setup cannot read installation media or write to the target disk.
- Accessing a drive that is beginning to fail, even if some folders still open normally.
A single failure on one file is different from a device that fails during every read and write. Record the exact operation, drive letter, file name, and whether the error follows the device to another computer. Those observations determine the safest next step.
Protect files before troubleshooting
An I/O error can be an early sign of degrading media. Every additional retry, repair, or write can make recovery harder if the disk is unstable. Before running a disk repair or formatting anything:
- Stop repeated copy attempts and cancel any operation that is clearly failing.
- If the drive still opens, copy the most important readable files to a different physical disk. Start with irreplaceable documents, photos, project files, and credentials.
- Use a second destination, not another folder on the same suspect drive. A successful copy within the same disk does not protect the data.
- Do not choose Format, Initialize, or a partition-delete option while you are still deciding whether recovery is needed.
- If the drive clicks, repeatedly disconnects, disappears from Windows, or becomes unusually slow, minimize use and consider professional data recovery before further experiments.
These precautions are especially important when the error occurs on an external hard disk. If only a DVD burn failed and the source files are safely stored elsewhere, the media-focused tests below are normally less risky.
Identify the scenario
Write down which of these matches your failure. Do not apply a DVD remedy to a USB disk or assume a Windows installation error has the same cause as a failed file copy.

| Scenario | What the failure may involve | First comparison |
|---|---|---|
| External-drive transfer | USB cable, port, enclosure, controller, disk media, or one source sector | Another cable, another port, and another computer |
| DVD burn or backup | Blank disc, burner, selected write speed, or optical drive | A different disc brand and a slower burn speed |
| Windows 7 installation | Installation disc or USB media, optical/USB path, target disk, or a bad sector | Check whether the same media reads elsewhere and whether the target disk behaves normally |
| One file or folder | One damaged file or unreadable sector rather than the whole device | Test other files and copy the most valuable data first |
If the error appears on several unrelated files and on more than one computer, suspect the device or its media. If it follows only one cable, port, disc, or file, that narrower item is the better first target.
Step 1: Reseat and simplify the connection
For an external drive, shut down the copy operation and disconnect the device through Windows 7’s Safely Remove Hardware icon when it is available. Reconnect it firmly, then test the simplest possible path.
- Unplug and reconnect both ends of the USB cable.
- Replace the cable with a known-good cable that fits the device.
- Move the device to a different USB port. Prefer a port directly on the computer rather than a hub or front-panel extension.
- If the enclosure has a separate power adapter, make sure it is firmly connected and that the drive receives stable power.
- Retry a small, non-critical file before attempting a large transfer.
A successful small copy after a cable or port change points to the connection path, but it does not prove the disk is healthy. Continue with a broader test if the device contains important data.

Step 2: Test the device on another computer
Connect the suspect external drive, optical disc, or installation media to another Windows computer. Use a different USB port and, if possible, a different cable there as well. This comparison separates a computer-specific controller or port problem from a device-specific problem.

- Works normally on the second computer: investigate the original computer’s port, controller, or software environment. Copy critical data while the device is readable.
- Fails in the same way on both computers: the drive, enclosure, disc, or burner becomes the stronger suspect.
- Only one file fails: copy other files first. The source file or the sectors containing it may be damaged even when the rest of the device is readable.
- The device vanishes or reconnects repeatedly: stop stressing it with retries and prioritize data recovery.
Do not infer that a drive is safe merely because it mounts and displays folders. Read failures can be localized, so a device may appear normal until Windows reaches a particular sector.
Step 3: Check the disk with Check Disk
Windows 7 includes Check Disk. The /r option tells it to locate bad sectors and attempt to recover readable information. It can take a long time, especially on a large or damaged disk, and it is not a certification that failing hardware is safe.
Run the graphical check
- Open Computer from the Start menu.
- Right-click the affected drive and choose Properties.
- Open the Tools tab and select Check now… under Error-checking.
- Select the option to Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors. Windows will also check and repair file-system errors when that option is selected.
- Click Start. If Windows says the volume is in use, accept scheduling the check for the next restart only if your important files are already backed up.
Run the command-line check
Use an account with administrative rights. Open the Start menu, type cmd, right-click cmd.exe, choose Run as administrator, and enter:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
chkdsk X: /r
Replace X: with the affected drive letter. Check the letter in Computer first; running a repair against the wrong volume can affect unrelated data. If Windows schedules the check, restart and allow it to finish without disconnecting the drive.

Read the final report. Messages about bad sectors, recovered data, or repeated corrections indicate that the disk has experienced a physical or file-system problem. Even if the command completes, copy important files to another disk and monitor for recurrence. A repair can make the file system usable while the underlying media continues to deteriorate.

When 0x8007045D appears while burning a DVD or creating an optical backup, change the media and the write conditions before changing Windows settings.
Use different blank media
The current disc may be defective or incompatible with the burner. Try a new disc from a different brand rather than repeatedly rewriting the same failed disc. Keep the original source files on the hard disk or another backup while testing.
Lower the burn speed
In the burning program, choose a slower speed than the maximum offered. Microsoft support guidance specifically recommends reducing speed when the burner or media does not support the selected rate. A slower setting can avoid a marginal write, but it cannot repair a failing burner or a damaged source file.

- Step 1: Boot from the USB Flash Drive - Insert the USB flash drive into an available USB port on your computer. - Turn on your computer or restart it if it’s already on. - As the computer starts, press the key that opens the boot menu. This key varies by manufacturer and model, but it’s often F2, F10, Esc, or Delete. - In the BIOS/UEFI setup menu, locate the Boot Options or Boot Order section. - Use the arrow keys to select your USB drive and move it to the top of the boot priority list. - Save your changes and exit the BIOS/UEFI setup. Your computer will now boot from the USB flash drive.
- After that its will take few minutes to reset Windows login password
- Package includes instruction how to use "Password reset USB" software
Compare the result
- If a different disc at a slower speed succeeds, discard the suspect disc and use the working media and speed for future backups.
- If several new discs fail in the same burner, test the burner or the computer’s optical drive.
- If the same disc fails in another computer or burner, treat the disc as defective.
Do not present a successful burn as proof that every file was backed up. Open or verify the completed disc from another drive before deleting the original files.
Step 5: If the error occurs during Windows 7 installation
An installation failure can involve the DVD, USB installation media, optical or USB path, or the destination disk. First determine whether setup cannot read its own installation source or cannot write to the target drive.
- Remove and reconnect the installation media, then retry once.
- If using a DVD, test another known-good disc or optical drive. If using USB media, test another USB port and another known-good installation device.
- Check the target disk independently. If it produces I/O errors when read or checked, stop installation attempts and protect any data on it.
- Disconnect unnecessary external storage so setup cannot mistake another device for the intended target.
- If the installation source works on another computer but the target machine still fails, compare the target machine’s ports, drive, and storage controller.
Formatting the target disk is destructive and should not be used as the first response when files on that disk matter. Resolve recovery decisions before deleting partitions or starting a clean installation.

How to interpret the outcome
| Observation | Most useful next action | Risk and reversibility |
|---|---|---|
| One cable or port fails, another works | Replace the cable or avoid the failing port; copy data while available | Low risk and readily reversible |
| External drive works on one computer only | Investigate the original computer’s port or controller | Low risk; keep a second backup |
| Check Disk reports bad sectors | Complete a separate backup and plan for drive replacement or recovery | Repair may alter file-system metadata; do not treat it as a hardware cure |
| New DVD media at slower speed succeeds | Use compatible media and the slower setting | Low risk; failed discs should not hold the only backup |
| Same device fails with known-good cables, ports, and computers | Replace the device or consult professional data recovery if files are valuable | Further retries and writes can increase data risk |
When to stop troubleshooting
Escalate instead of repeating the same operation when the drive fails across known-good cables, ports, and computers; when it disconnects during reads; when Check Disk reports bad sectors; or when the data exists nowhere else. A replacement is appropriate for ordinary storage whose contents are backed up. Professional recovery is more appropriate when the contents are irreplaceable and the device is unstable.
There is no universal Windows 7 setting that resolves every 0x8007045D event. Registry cleaners, random driver changes, and repeated formatting do not isolate the I/O path described by this code. The useful evidence comes from controlled comparisons: another cable, another port, another computer, another disc, a slower burn, and the behavior of other files.
