If Windows 7 shows 0x80070422 while checking for updates, the Windows Update service is usually disabled or stopped. Open services.msc, set Windows Update to Automatic, start it, restart the computer, and check again. The spelling 0xC80070422 has not been confirmed in Microsoft’s current Windows Update documentation, so first verify the exact code in the original dialog, screenshot, or log.

Starting the service can repair the error itself, but it cannot restore ordinary current security updates to an unsupported Windows 7 installation. Whether updates are available also depends on the device’s Windows 7 support or Extended Security Updates (ESU) coverage.

What Windows 7 error 0x80070422 means

Microsoft identifies 0x80070422 as ERROR_SERVICE_DISABLED in the Windows Update context. In practical terms, Windows Update is not running because its service has been stopped or disabled. Windows Update cannot scan, download, or install updates until that service can run.

This is a service-configuration problem, not evidence by itself that the computer has malware, damaged hardware, or a failed internet connection. Those issues can cause other update errors, but this code points first to the Windows Update service state.

Check the extra “C” in the code

The title wording 0xC80070422 includes an additional “C.” Microsoft’s current documentation for this Windows Update failure uses 0x80070422 without that character. Because a single character can identify a different error, do not assume the two codes are interchangeable.

  • Read the original error dialog again rather than relying on memory.
  • Compare the code with a screenshot, saved message, or update log.
  • If the dialog really says 0xC80070422, record that exact spelling before applying a fix intended for 0x80070422.

If the message says 0x80070422, the service procedure below is the documented first repair. If the additional “C” is definitely present, use the procedure as a cautious service check, then seek help using the exact code if the problem remains.

Choose the right troubleshooting path

What you observe Most useful next action Why
The code is 0x80070422 and Windows Update is not running Enable and start Windows Update in Services The code is associated with a disabled Windows Update service.
The service starts but the error returns Run the Windows Update troubleshooter, then reset the SoftwareDistribution cache if necessary A stale or incomplete download cache can keep an otherwise enabled service from completing an update check.
You cannot change the service Sign in with an administrator account or ask the computer’s administrator Changing service startup settings requires administrative permission.
Updates still do not appear on Windows 7 Check whether the installation is covered by ESU Repairing the service does not create update entitlement after normal Windows 7 support ended.
The code is definitely 0xC80070422 Preserve the exact code and treat the result of the service check as a diagnostic, not a confirmed match The extra “C” is not confirmed by the cited Windows Update documentation.

Before changing Windows Update

  • Save open documents and close programs that are installing software.
  • Write down the exact error code and the time it appeared.
  • Use an account with administrator rights. If this is a work or school PC, the organization may control service settings.
  • Do not delete files from arbitrary Windows folders. The cache procedure later applies only to the contents of C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution.
  • Plan to restart the computer after changing the service. Windows Update may not reinitialize correctly until Windows has restarted.

Primary fix: enable and start the Windows Update service

These steps use the built-in Services console and do not require downloading a repair program.

  1. Press Windows key + R to open the Run dialog.
  2. Type services.msc and press Enter. Approve the User Account Control prompt if Windows displays one.
  3. In the Services list, find Windows Update. The list is alphabetical, so scrolling to the “W” entries can be quicker than searching randomly.
  4. Double-click Windows Update to open its Properties window.
  5. Open the Startup type menu and select Automatic. This allows the service to start with Windows rather than remaining disabled.
  6. Look at Service status. If it says Stopped, click Start. Microsoft’s support instructions specifically direct users to click Start when the service is stopped.
  7. Click Apply, then OK to close Properties.

If Start is unavailable, the status already says Running, or Windows reports an error, leave the exact message unchanged and continue to the relevant troubleshooting branch below. Do not repeatedly click Start without noting what Windows reports.

Restart after the service change

  1. Close the Services window.
  2. Restart Windows 7 from the Start menu.
  3. After signing in, wait for the desktop to finish loading.
  4. Open Control Panel, select System and Security, then choose Windows Update.
  5. Select Check for updates.

A successful service repair should let Windows Update begin its check instead of immediately reporting that the service cannot be started. The first scan can take time on an older installation; allow it to finish before deciding that the change failed.

If the error returns after enabling the service

Run the Windows Update troubleshooter

Windows 7 includes a Windows Update troubleshooter. Open Control Panel, use the search box to find Troubleshooting, open it, and select the option for fixing problems with Windows Update. Follow the on-screen checks and apply any repair it offers. Restart the computer afterward, then try Check for updates again.

The troubleshooter is useful when the service can run but Windows Update still cannot complete its work. It does not change the support status of Windows 7, and it cannot make updates available to a device that is not entitled to them.

Reset the Windows Update download cache

An interrupted or incomplete download can leave Windows Update with cache data it cannot process. Microsoft’s documented cache-reset flow is:

  1. Open services.msc again.
  2. Open Windows Update and click Stop if the service is running. Confirm that its status is stopped before touching the cache.
  3. Open File Explorer and go to C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution.
  4. Delete the files and folders inside SoftwareDistribution. Do not delete the SoftwareDistribution folder itself and do not remove files from other system folders.
  5. Return to the Windows Update Properties window and click Start.
  6. Click Apply, then OK.
  7. Restart the computer.
  8. Open Windows Update and select Check for updates.

Windows will rebuild the cache as needed. The reset removes downloaded update data; it does not remove your personal documents. If Windows refuses to delete an item, check that the Windows Update service is stopped and that you are using an administrator account. Do not force-delete files that are in use.

When Services will not let you change Windows Update

You are not an administrator

Service startup settings are protected. Sign out and use an administrator account, or ask the person who administers the computer to perform the steps. On a company, school, or shared computer, a policy may intentionally prevent users from changing Windows Update.

The startup setting changes back

If Automatic does not remain selected after a restart, record that behavior. It can indicate that another administrator-controlled setting is restoring the previous configuration. Avoid changing unrelated services at random; doing so can create additional startup problems without addressing the original code.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The service starts, then stops immediately

Note the exact status and any message shown in the Services console. Restart once, run the Windows Update troubleshooter, and then perform the SoftwareDistribution cache reset. If the service still stops, preserve the original code and the new message for the computer’s administrator or technical support rather than guessing at registry changes.

How to tell a service problem from a cache problem

Sign Service disabled or stopped Cache or incomplete-download problem
Windows Update status in Services Stopped, or startup type is Disabled Running or able to start
First repair to try Set Startup type to Automatic and click Start Run the troubleshooter, then reset SoftwareDistribution if needed
What restarting accomplishes Loads the newly enabled service configuration Reinitializes the service after its cache has been rebuilt
What the repair cannot do It cannot grant access to updates that are no longer offered to unsupported Windows 7 devices It cannot fix a wrong error code or an administrator policy that blocks the service

Windows 7 support and ESU limitations

Microsoft states that support for Windows 7 ended on January 14, 2020. Updates released after that date apply only to devices covered by Windows 7 Extended Security Updates (ESU). Microsoft’s Windows 7 lifecycle information also labels the product out of support and shows January 15, 2020 as the extended-support end date in its table; the dates are presented differently across Microsoft’s support pages, so use your licensing or organization records to determine what coverage your particular installation has.

This distinction matters after the service repair:

  • Service repair: makes Windows Update capable of starting and checking.
  • Update eligibility: determines whether Microsoft will actually offer a given update to that device.
  • Un-enrolled Windows 7: may complete a service check yet receive no ordinary current security updates because regular support has ended.
  • ESU-covered Windows 7: can receive updates released for its ESU coverage, subject to the applicable license and deployment requirements.

Therefore, “Windows Update opened successfully” and “Windows 7 is receiving current security updates” are separate outcomes. Do not treat a successful scan as proof that the operating system is supported.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Fixing the wrong code: confirm whether the message says 0x80070422 or 0xC80070422.
  • Leaving Startup type unchanged: clicking Start once may be temporary if the service remains Disabled. Set it to Automatic and save with Apply.
  • Skipping the restart: restart after changing the service and again after resetting the cache.
  • Deleting the wrong folder: remove only the contents inside C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution while Windows Update is stopped.
  • Assuming no updates means the repair failed: check Windows 7 support or ESU coverage first.
  • Changing many services at once: make one documented change, test, and keep the resulting message. This makes recovery and diagnosis possible.
  • Using a repair tool as a substitute for support: no utility can create Microsoft update entitlement for an unsupported operating system.

What to record if none of these steps works

Before seeking further assistance, record the exact code, whether the Windows Update service was Disabled, Manual, or Automatic, whether it could be started, and what happened after the restart. Also note whether the troubleshooter completed and whether the SoftwareDistribution contents could be deleted. This information distinguishes a service configuration problem from a cache failure, an administrator restriction, or a code that is not actually 0x80070422.

If the computer is managed by an organization, provide those details to its administrator. If it is a personal PC, preserve the original dialog or screenshot and use the exact spelling when consulting Windows 7 support documentation. Avoid registry edits or deleting additional system folders unless a qualified technician gives instructions specific to the recorded error.
