“0x8007042” is incomplete. Do not apply a repair until you read the entire code from the Windows dialog, Windows Update history, or the Setup log. The two Microsoft-documented codes that most closely match it are 0x80070422 and 0x8007042B, but they describe different failures and require different first steps.
0x80070422 normally means the Windows Update service is disabled or stopped. 0x8007042B indicates that Windows Setup terminated unexpectedly during an upgrade, often because another process was running in the background. The final character matters: a trailing 2 points to the service problem, while a trailing capital B points to setup interference.

Confirm the complete error before changing Windows
The title-sized form 0x8007042 does not identify one condition in Microsoft’s documentation. It may be a truncated reading of a longer code, or the last character may have been misread. A repair for the wrong code can waste time and can leave services or security software in an unintended state.
Where to find the missing character
- Error dialog: Reopen the failed update or upgrade and copy the code exactly, including every letter and any suffix after the main eight-character code.
- Windows Update history: Open the update history in Control Panel and record the failed update number beside the error.
- Setup logs: If this happened during an operating-system upgrade, inspect the Setup result and record the complete code, including a suffix such as
0x4000D.
Write the code down before trying a fix. The distinction between 0x80070422 and 0x8007042B determines whether you should start a service or remove background interference.

What the two likely codes mean
0x80070422: Windows Update service disabled or stopped
Microsoft’s error table identifies 0x80070422 as ERROR_SERVICE_DISABLED. In practical terms, Windows Update cannot perform the requested operation because its service has stopped working or is not running. This is a service-state problem, not proof of malware or a damaged hardware component.
The error generally appears during a normal update check, download, or installation. The first repair is therefore to inspect the Windows Update service itself. If the service starts successfully, retry the same update. If it will not start or the error returns, reset the Windows Update components and cache using Microsoft Support’s documented procedure.
0x8007042B: Windows Setup ended unexpectedly
Microsoft describes 0x8007042B as an upgrade or setup interruption. Another process running in the background can cause Setup to terminate unexpectedly. This is a different context from a routine Windows Update failure: the remedy focuses on reducing interference during the installation attempt.

Before you repair a Windows 7 installation
Protect the current installation
- Save open documents and close applications before changing a service or restarting the computer.
- Make sure you can sign in with an administrator account. The Services console and a clean-boot configuration require administrative permission.
- Keep the original error text and update or setup number. If the repair fails, that information is more useful than a shortened code.
- For an upgrade attempt, have installation media or the original setup source available before disconnecting devices or changing startup settings.
Understand Windows 7’s support status
Microsoft ended Windows 7 security updates and technical support on January 14, 2020. A successful repair of the old update mechanism does not restore current security maintenance. If the computer remains on Windows 7, plan how it will be moved to a supported operating system or isolated from untrusted networks after the immediate error is resolved.

Fix path A: repair 0x80070422
1. Open the Services console
- Click Start, open Control Panel, choose Administrative Tools, and open Services.
- If you prefer a shortcut, press
Win+R, typeservices.msc, and press Enter. - In the list, locate Windows Update. The list is alphabetical, so scrolling to the W section is usually fastest.
2. Set Windows Update to an enabled startup type
- Right-click Windows Update and select Properties.
- In Startup type, choose an enabled option. Microsoft’s current guidance uses Automatic.
- Click Apply. If the service status shows Stopped, click Start, then click OK.
- Close the Services window and restart the computer if Windows requests it.
An enabled startup type alone is not the same as a running service. Confirm that the status changes to running before retrying the update.
3. Retry the failed update
- Open Control Panel → System and Security → Windows Update.
- Choose the option to check for updates or retry the failed installation.
- Wait for the result instead of starting several update attempts at once.
If the update completes, keep the recorded code and update number with your maintenance notes. If the same code returns, continue with the component-reset step rather than repeatedly clicking Retry.
4. Reset Windows Update components and cache if necessary
Microsoft Support provides a component-reset procedure for cases where starting the service does not clear the failure. Follow that procedure exactly for Windows 7, including its instructions for stopping the relevant update services, rebuilding the update cache, and starting the services again. The procedure differs by Windows version; do not substitute a script intended for a different release.
After the reset, restart Windows and run Windows Update once more. If it fails again, capture the complete code, the update identification number, and the point at which the installation stopped. The shortened form 0x8007042 still cannot identify the next repair.
5. If Windows Update will not start
- Reopen
services.mscand verify that you changed Windows Update, not a similarly named service. - Check whether the service immediately stops after you click Start. That behavior is evidence to record, not a reason to keep clicking the button.
- Use the exact error returned by the Services console together with the update-history code when seeking further Microsoft documentation.
- Do not disable unrelated services at random. Changing several services at once makes the original cause harder to identify.
Fix path B: repair 0x8007042B during an upgrade
1. Remove nonessential hardware
- Shut down Windows normally.
- Disconnect nonessential USB devices, external drives, printers, scanners, and similar peripherals.
- Leave only the keyboard, mouse, display, network connection, and hardware required to run the installation.
- Restart and rerun Setup from the same installation source.
Do not disconnect a device that is required to control the computer or provide the installation files. Reconnect removed equipment only after the upgrade has completed or after you have confirmed that the retry failed for the same reason.

2. Perform a Windows 7 clean boot
A clean boot starts Windows with Microsoft services and a reduced set of startup programs so that a third-party process is less likely to interrupt Setup.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Press
Win+R, typemsconfig, and press Enter. - On the General tab, select Selective startup. Keep Load system services enabled and clear the option that loads startup items.
- Open the Services tab. Select Hide all Microsoft services before disabling remaining third-party services. Hiding Microsoft services prevents you from accidentally disabling core Windows components.
- Apply the changes and restart when prompted.
- Run the upgrade again while the clean-boot configuration is active.
Write down the original settings before changing them. After the upgrade attempt, open msconfig again, select Normal startup or restore the recorded settings, apply the change, and restart. Leaving Windows in a diagnostic startup state can prevent normal third-party software from loading.
3. Temporarily remove or disable third-party antivirus or antispyware
Microsoft recommends temporarily removing or disabling third-party antivirus or antispyware for the installation attempt when it may interfere with Setup. Follow that product’s own instructions rather than deleting files manually. Disconnecting from untrusted networks while protection is disabled reduces exposure.
Start the upgrade immediately after making the temporary change, and re-enable or reinstall protection as soon as the attempt ends. This step is only for the installation window; it is not a recommendation to operate Windows permanently without security software.
4. Retry Setup and capture the complete result
- Run the upgrade again with nonessential devices disconnected, a clean boot active, and the temporary security-software change completed.
- If Setup succeeds, restore normal startup and reconnect devices one at a time.
- If Setup fails, copy the entire code, including any suffix such as
0x4000D, and note the stage at which it stopped. - Keep the Setup log information with the code. A repeated failure under clean-boot conditions points away from an ordinary third-party startup conflict and gives support a more precise starting point.
Choose the correct branch instead of mixing fixes
| Question | If yes | If no |
|---|---|---|
| Did the error occur while checking or installing an ordinary update? | Verify whether the full code is 0x80070422; inspect Windows Update service state. |
Check whether it occurred during an operating-system upgrade. |
| Did Windows Setup terminate during an upgrade? | Verify whether the full code is 0x8007042B; remove peripherals and clean-boot Windows. |
Do not assume either branch; recover the original code first. |
| Does the code include a suffix? | Record the suffix exactly because it narrows the Setup diagnosis. | Use the base code and the event context when consulting Microsoft documentation. |
| Did starting Windows Update clear the failure? | Retry once and keep the successful result documented. | Use Microsoft’s component-reset procedure and capture the new error. |
Common mistakes that make the failure harder to diagnose
Treating the truncated code as a complete diagnosis
The string 0x8007042 is one character or suffix short of the likely documented forms. Searching for a fix using that shortened string can combine instructions for unrelated failures. Always quote the complete code in support requests.

Using the update-service fix during an upgrade
Starting Windows Update will not address a setup process that was interrupted by another background program. For an upgrade failure, use the clean-boot and peripheral-removal path first.
Leaving security software disabled
Third-party antivirus or antispyware should be disabled or removed only for the installation attempt and according to the vendor’s instructions. Restore protection immediately afterward.
Changing too many services at once
For 0x80070422, change the Windows Update service first and test. Randomly disabling additional services can create new failures and removes useful evidence about the original cause.
Assuming a successful repair makes Windows 7 current
Windows 7 reached end of support on January 14, 2020. Fixing one update or setup error does not provide the security updates and technical support that ended on that date.
What to record if neither repair works
- The complete hexadecimal code, preserving uppercase letters and every suffix.
- Whether the failure occurred in routine Windows Update or during an operating-system upgrade.
- The update identification number, if one appears in history.
- Whether Windows Update was running after you changed its startup type.
- Whether the upgrade still failed after nonessential devices were disconnected and Windows was clean-booted.
- Whether third-party antivirus or antispyware was temporarily removed or disabled, and whether it was restored afterward.
- The relevant Setup or update log details and the exact stage of failure.
This record separates a service-state failure from a setup-interference failure and prevents another technician from repeating the wrong branch.
