Windows 11 Widgets problems usually fall into three different categories: the Widgets button is hidden, the board opens but cannot populate, or only particular web-backed widgets fail. Start by identifying which symptom you have, then work through the low-risk checks in order: restore the taskbar control, update the Windows Web Experience Pack and Start Experiences App, verify Microsoft Edge for Edge-dependent content, and check whether an administrator has disabled Widgets.
Microsoft does not publish one universal reset procedure that fixes every blank Widgets board. If these checks do not help, the most useful escalation report includes your Windows version and build, the exact scope of the failure, when it began, and any error text.

First, identify what is actually broken
A missing taskbar button is not the same problem as a board that opens with empty cards. Separating those cases prevents you from changing browser or system settings when the only issue is taskbar visibility.

1. Restore the Widgets button and test the keyboard shortcut
Turn the taskbar control on
- Open Settings.
- Select Personalization, then Taskbar.
- Under Taskbar items, turn Widgets on.
The setting controls whether the taskbar button is shown; it does not prove that the Widgets service or its content is healthy. After enabling it, select the button and wait for the board to appear.
Open Widgets without the taskbar
Press Windows key + W. If this opens a normally populated board while the taskbar button was absent, the immediate problem was access to the taskbar control, not content loading. If the shortcut opens a blank board, continue with the component and content checks below.
2. Update the components that deliver Widgets
Microsoft identifies the Windows Web Experience Pack as an app used to deliver and update Windows features such as Widgets. Microsoft’s current Widgets FAQ also says that both the Web Experience Pack and the Start Experiences App should be current for Widgets and Discover dashboards to work as expected.
Update Windows Web Experience Pack in Microsoft Store
- Open Microsoft Store.
- Select Library.
- Look for Windows Web Experience Pack.
- Select Update if that button is offered.
If there is no Update button, Microsoft says the latest version is already installed. Do not interpret the absence of that button as a failed repair; it means Store has no newer package available for your device at that moment.
Check Start Experiences App
While you are in Microsoft Store, check for an available update for Start Experiences App. Microsoft names it alongside Web Experience Pack in its Widgets guidance. The two packages can be serviced separately, so updating one does not establish that the other is current.
Keep future Store updates enabled
Microsoft Store normally updates the Web Experience Pack automatically. If Store app updates have been disabled, re-enable them so future Widgets component updates can install. Store labels and update behavior can vary with Windows servicing, so use the Library page as the authoritative place to check what is available on your installation.
Install Windows updates and restart
Open Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, and install applicable updates. Restart Windows after Store and Windows updates finish, then test Widgets again with Windows key + W. A restart matters because the updated app packages and Windows components may not be used by an already-running shell session.

3. Check Microsoft Edge when only web-backed content fails
Some widgets and the News Feed depend on Microsoft Edge. Microsoft advises keeping Edge installed and updated; uninstalling it stops Edge-backed widgets from working. This is a dependency for some content, not evidence that Edge explains every blank Widgets board.
Use the scope of the failure as your clue
- If weather, stocks, sports, calendar, News Feed, or another individual web-backed card is the only item that fails, Edge and the card’s web connection are relevant suspects.
- If every card is blank, updating the Widgets delivery components and checking policy are higher-priority steps than assuming Edge is the sole cause.
- If the board opens and some cards populate while one service remains empty, treat it as a service- or widget-specific failure rather than a complete Widgets outage.
Verify Edge itself
- Open Microsoft Edge from the Start menu.
- Install any update Edge offers through its settings or normal update flow.
- Visit a few ordinary websites to confirm that pages load.
If Edge cannot load ordinary pages, first test your normal network connection. Microsoft’s Edge troubleshooting guidance recommends restarting the browser or device and clearing cached data when pages display incorrectly. Those browser steps can help a web-backed card, but they are not a guaranteed fix for a blank Widgets board.
Do not uninstall Edge as a troubleshooting experiment. Microsoft explicitly states that removing it prevents Edge-backed widgets from working.
4. Determine whether an organization policy controls Widgets
On a personal PC, you should normally be able to control the Widgets taskbar item. On a work or school computer, an administrator can control the feature with the documented Allow widgets policy.
Recommended Free Tools
Signs that policy may be involved
- Widgets is absent from the Taskbar items section rather than merely switched off.
- The switch appears but cannot be changed, or it immediately reverts.
- The computer is joined to an employer, school, or other managed environment.
- The issue began after a device-management change or company Windows rollout.
What the administrator should check
Microsoft documents the Group Policy location as:
Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Widgets
The corresponding device-management path is the NewsAndInterests/AllowNewsAndInterests policy. Policy names and management interfaces can differ by edition and management system, so ordinary users should provide these documented locations to their administrator rather than changing system settings themselves.
Do not recommend registry edits as a first-line fix. A registry change can conflict with centrally managed policy, be overwritten at the next policy refresh, or create a new support problem without addressing an outdated Store component or a service-specific loading failure.

5. Use the symptom scope to choose the next branch
| What you see | Most useful next action | What the result tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Button missing, Windows key + W opens a populated board | Leave Widgets enabled under Taskbar items. | The board works; the issue was taskbar access. |
| Button and shortcut both open a blank board | Update Web Experience Pack, Start Experiences App, Windows, then restart. | A component or shell update may have been pending. |
| Only one or a few cards fail | Check Edge installation, Edge updates, and ordinary web access. | The problem may be limited to Edge-backed or service-specific content. |
| Widgets is unavailable on a managed PC | Contact IT with the Allow widgets policy locations. | Organization policy may be intentionally controlling the feature. |
| All checks pass but the board remains blank | Collect version, scope, timing, and error details and escalate. | The official references do not establish a universal repair command or single cause. |
A quick decision path
You can reduce unnecessary changes by treating the first successful test as the answer. If Windows key + W opens populated cards, leave the taskbar setting enabled and stop. If the shortcut opens but the board is empty, go directly to Microsoft Store and check both named apps, then install Windows updates and restart. If only one card or the News Feed is affected, test Edge and ordinary websites before changing anything else. If the Widgets switch is missing or locked on a work or school device, the fastest route is IT, because a local fix cannot override the Allow widgets policy.
These branches are not interchangeable. Updating Edge will not restore a hidden taskbar button, and enabling the taskbar button will not refresh an outdated Web Experience Pack. Matching the action to the scope also makes later support conversations more precise.
Understanding update and loading states
A Store page that shows no Update button is not reporting an error; according to Microsoft, it indicates that the latest available package is already installed. Conversely, Windows Update saying that Windows is current does not confirm that Store-delivered components are current. Check the Library entries separately and note the date each update completed.
After an update, close and reopen the Widgets board, then restart Windows before judging the result. A shell process that was already running may not immediately use a newly serviced app package. If the board remains blank after the restart, avoid repeatedly clicking Update when Store reports no newer version; move to the Edge and policy branches instead.
6. Record useful details before escalating
When the standard checks fail, a precise report is more useful than saying simply that “Widgets do not work.” Record the following:
- Windows version and build: open Settings > System > About and note the Windows specifications shown there.
- Failure scope: state whether the taskbar button is missing, whether Windows key + W opens the board, whether every card is blank, or whether only named cards fail.
- Start date and trigger: note when the problem began and whether it followed a Windows update, Store update, browser change, account change, or device-management change.
- Exact error text: copy any message shown in the board or in Microsoft Store instead of paraphrasing it.
- Component status: note whether Store offered updates for Windows Web Experience Pack or Start Experiences App and whether the update completed.
- Edge test: record whether Edge is installed, current, and able to load ordinary pages.
- Management status: say whether the PC belongs to an employer or school and whether IT controls Windows settings.
Use Microsoft Support for a personal device or your organization’s IT channel for a managed one. Include the details above so support can distinguish a hidden control from a component, browser, service, or policy problem.
Why these fixes are separate
The taskbar is only an access control
The Widgets taskbar switch determines whether the button is visible. It does not reinstall the board or refresh its data. That is why Windows key + W is a useful diagnostic: it bypasses the taskbar button while leaving the underlying board unchanged.

Widgets is delivered through Windows and Store components
The Web Experience Pack is an app that helps deliver and update Windows features such as Widgets. Start Experiences App is another component Microsoft identifies for Widgets and Discover dashboards. Their update state can therefore matter even when Windows itself reports that it is fully updated.
Edge is a dependency for selected content
Some cards use Edge-backed web content. A failure in those cards can coexist with a healthy board and other functioning widgets. Conversely, a blank board with no populated cards is not enough evidence to blame Edge; the official guidance does not say that every blank panel is caused by the browser.

Policy can override local settings
On managed computers, a local user may not be permitted to enable Widgets. In that case, repeatedly switching the taskbar control or reinstalling components cannot override the administrator’s Allow widgets setting.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What not to do
- Do not buy hardware or a repair utility. The documented remedies are Windows settings, Microsoft Store and Windows updates, Edge verification, and administrator policy review. A generic accessory or third-party repair product does not address those causes.
- Do not assume a missing button means Widgets is broken. Test Windows key + W before changing components.
- Do not treat an up-to-date Edge installation as proof that every widget should load. Edge is relevant to selected web-backed content only.
- Do not use registry edits as a routine first step. They are especially inappropriate on managed devices and are not presented by Microsoft as a universal repair for blank Widgets.
- Do not claim that one restart or one update fixes every case. Microsoft provides a set of checks, not a guaranteed single-step resolution.
Microsoft’s documented requirement
“For Widgets and Discover dashboards to work as expected, you need the latest updates for both the Windows Web Experience Pack and Start Experiences App.”
This requirement explains why checking only Windows Update is incomplete: the two named components are delivered and updated as apps, with Microsoft Store involved in their servicing.
When the issue is still unresolved
If the Widgets switch is enabled, the board remains blank after the named components and Windows are current, Edge-backed content has been checked, and no organization policy blocks the feature, stop applying increasingly invasive changes. The available Microsoft guidance does not establish a single supported reset command, a universal cause, or a success rate for every blank Widgets case.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAt that point, send support or IT a concise reproduction: “Windows key + W opens [blank board or named failed cards] on Windows [version/build]; taskbar Widgets is [on/off or unavailable]; Web Experience Pack and Start Experiences App are [current or updated on date]; Edge is [installed/current and ordinary pages load or not]; the issue began [date or event]; error text: [exact wording].” That information gives the next technician a clear starting point without risking unrelated system changes.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is the Widgets button missing but Windows key + W still works?
The taskbar button is controlled separately from the board. Open Settings > Personalization > Taskbar, turn on Widgets under Taskbar items, and use Windows key + W to confirm that the board itself is working.
What should I update when the entire Widgets board is blank?
In Microsoft Store, open Library and check Windows Web Experience Pack and Start Experiences App. Install offered updates, run Windows Update, restart Windows, and test again. Microsoft specifically names both apps as needing current updates.
Do I need Microsoft Edge for every Windows 11 widget?
No. Microsoft says some widgets and the News Feed depend on Edge. Keep Edge installed and updated for those cards, but an up-to-date Edge installation does not prove that every blank board is an Edge problem.
What if Microsoft Store has no Update button for Web Experience Pack?
Microsoft says no Update button means the latest version is already installed for that device at that time. Check Start Experiences App separately, install Windows updates, restart, and continue with the symptom-specific checks.
Can a work or school administrator disable Widgets?
Yes. The documented Allow widgets policy is managed under Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Widgets. Device management can use NewsAndInterests/AllowNewsAndInterests. Contact IT instead of changing the registry.
Why do only weather, stocks, sports, calendar, or News Feed cards fail?
Those cards may rely on web-backed content and Microsoft Edge. Verify that Edge opens ordinary websites, is updated, and remains installed. A failure limited to one card can also be service-specific rather than a complete Widgets failure.
Is there a universal command to reset blank Widgets?
Microsoft’s guidance does not establish one supported reset command or one cause that applies to every blank board. After the documented checks, collect your build, symptom scope, timing, and exact error text for Microsoft Support or IT.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Should I buy a repair utility or PC accessory?
No. The documented remedies involve Windows settings, Microsoft Store and Windows updates, Edge verification, and administrator policy. A generic accessory or repair utility does not address those causes.
The Bottom Line
First test Windows key + W, then restore the taskbar button if it is hidden. Update both Windows Web Experience Pack and Start Experiences App through Microsoft Store, install Windows updates, and restart. Check Edge only when specific web-backed cards fail, and ask IT about Allow widgets on managed PCs. If the board is still blank, escalate with your Windows build, failure scope, timing, component status, Edge test, and exact error text rather than making unsupported registry changes.
