Start by protecting your files and recording the exact error code. A message such as “We couldn’t complete the updates. Undoing changes” only describes the rollback, not its cause. In Windows 11, run the Windows Update troubleshooter from the Get Help app, then follow the branch that matches the code in Settings > Windows Update > Update history. The code may point to a connection, storage, driver, security-software, or damaged-system-file problem, so do not apply a random fix based only on the percentage where installation stopped.
Windows 11 feature updates can fail before installation, roll back after rebooting, or appear to stop at a particular percentage. The safest approach is staged: back up important data, identify the failed update and its code, run Windows’ own troubleshooter, perform the low-risk checks, and only then move to cache, driver, clean-start, or system-repair work.

Back up personal files before changing Windows
Copy documents, photos, browser exports, project folders, and other irreplaceable files to a separate location before troubleshooting. Microsoft lists a USB flash drive as one backup option and also provides PC-backup guidance. A backup drive is useful while protecting data, but it is not a cure for the update error.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAfter the backup is complete, disconnect nonessential external devices for the upgrade attempt. Microsoft specifically recommends removing external hardware such as USB drives, external disks, printers, cameras, and docking stations when they are not required. Leave the backup device connected only long enough to finish copying files; unplug it before retrying the feature update. On a laptop, disconnect from a dock and connect the computer directly to power.

Do not interrupt a legitimate installation unnecessarily
A feature update can restart more than once. If Windows is still progressing, allow it to finish. If it repeatedly returns to the desktop with a rollback message, or the same update fails again, record the failure rather than repeatedly forcing shutdowns. A hard power-off can make a partially installed update harder to repair.
Find the exact failure instead of guessing
Use Update history
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Open Update history.
- Locate the failed feature update and copy its error code exactly, including every character and hyphen.
Messages such as “We couldn’t complete the updates. Undoing changes” and “Failure configuring Windows Updates” are generic rollback notices. They do not establish whether the cause is disk space, a VPN, a driver, security software, damaged components, or a rollout hold. Microsoft’s upgrade-error guidance explains that some codes can have more than one cause: Get help with Windows upgrade and installation errors.
Record useful context
- The feature-update version shown in Windows Update, such as Windows 11 version 24H2.
- The exact error code and whether it appears before or after a restart.
- Whether the device is connected through a work VPN, proxy, docking station, or managed network.
- How much free space is available on the Windows system drive.
- Whether the computer uses third-party antivirus, endpoint protection, encryption, storage, or hardware-management software.
- The percentage at which the attempt appears to stop and whether it later reverts.
Run Windows 11’s built-in troubleshooter
Preferred route: Get Help
On Windows 11, Microsoft’s current first step is the automated Windows Update troubleshooter in the Get Help app. Open Get Help, search for Windows Update problems, and follow the diagnostic prompts. Apply a suggested repair only after reading what it changes, then restart if the app requests it.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Manual route if Get Help is unavailable
- Open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Find Windows Update and select Run.
- Let the checks complete, apply the recommended action, and restart.
- Retry Windows Update once after the restart and note any new code in Update history.
Microsoft’s broader procedure, including additional checks for update failures, is at Troubleshoot problems updating Windows. Interface names can vary slightly between Windows 11 builds.
Complete the low-risk checks before advanced repairs
Install pending updates and hardware drivers
Open Settings > Windows Update, install important pending updates, restart, and check again. Then obtain compatible drivers from the hardware manufacturer for storage controllers, graphics, network adapters, and other devices that have recently changed. An outdated or incompatible driver can cause a feature-update rollback even when Windows Update itself is working.

Remove nonessential hardware
Unplug USB flash drives, external disks, printers, cameras, card readers, and other accessories that are not needed for the installation. Disconnect a laptop from its docking station and connect it directly to power and the network. Keep only the keyboard, mouse, display, and hardware required to operate the computer.
Consider third-party security software
Microsoft notes that non-Microsoft antivirus or security software can interfere with updates. If the error began after installing or updating such a product, check its vendor’s documented Windows 11 compatibility guidance. Temporarily uninstalling it can be appropriate when Microsoft’s troubleshooting path identifies it as a likely conflict, but do this only if you have a replacement protection plan and know how to reinstall the product. Do not leave the computer unprotected longer than necessary.
Check the network path
Retry on a reliable connection without a work VPN or unusual proxy when policy permits. One specific code, 0x800F0922, can indicate that Windows cannot reach update servers; Microsoft also lists a VPN connection to a work network as a possible factor. A network symptom does not prove that the VPN is the cause, so restore the normal connection after testing.
Match common codes to the right troubleshooting branch
| Error or symptom | What Microsoft says it can indicate | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
0x800F0922 |
Windows may be unable to connect to Windows Update servers, including through a work VPN, or the System Reserved partition may not have enough space. | Test without the VPN or restrictive network path. If the code persists, investigate the System Reserved partition carefully; do not resize a partition casually or without a current backup. |
0x80070070-0x50011, 0x80070070-0x50012, or 0x80070070-0x60000 |
These variants likely indicate insufficient available space for the upgrade. | Free space on the Windows system drive, empty Recycle Bin and temporary files where appropriate, remove unused applications or large personal files after backing them up, restart, and retry. |
| “Undoing changes” or “Failure configuring Windows Updates” | A generic rollback message, not a diagnosis. | Open Settings > Windows Update > Update history and use the specific failed-update code to choose the next branch. |
| Another code | Microsoft’s error-code table may associate it with several possible causes; a similar-looking code from a forum is not sufficient evidence. | Search Microsoft’s current upgrade-error page for the complete code and follow the matching instructions rather than assuming a single cause. |
The code table and explanations can change as Microsoft documents new issues. Use the current page at Get help with Windows upgrade and installation errors instead of treating any code as a guaranteed diagnosis.
When the update is stuck at a percentage
A percentage alone does not identify the failure. Installation stages can spend different amounts of time processing files, drivers, and migrations, and the display may not move uniformly. Keep the computer connected to power and avoid repeated forced shutdowns while the process is still active.

If the attempt eventually returns to Windows, open Update history immediately and capture the code. If it repeatedly stalls at the same stage and then rolls back, use the troubleshooter and the code-specific branches above. Remove nonessential hardware, check drivers and security software, and confirm adequate free space before trying again. Microsoft’s general update guide covers cases in which an update appears stuck: Troubleshoot problems updating Windows.

These actions can affect services, security software, or system files. Use them only when the earlier checks do not resolve the same failure, and create a current backup first. Microsoft labels command-line procedures for people who are comfortable working with administrator-level tools.
Clear the Windows Update cache
A damaged download or catalog in the update cache can make Windows retry the same failed package. Microsoft documents stopping the Windows Update-related services, clearing the cached contents, restarting those services, and trying the update again. Follow the current sequence in Microsoft’s troubleshooting guide rather than deleting arbitrary folders. If you use an elevated Command Prompt or Services console, verify that you are changing only the services and cache locations named by Microsoft.
Check drivers with the hardware maker
Feature updates replace or migrate more components than a routine monthly update. If the failure began after adding hardware, changing storage, updating graphics software, or restoring an older driver, obtain the Windows 11-compatible package from the device manufacturer. Avoid installing several unrelated driver utilities at once; change one suspected component, restart, and test again so you can identify the effect.
Temporarily remove incompatible security software
If Microsoft’s diagnostics or the error pattern points to a third-party security product, temporarily uninstall it using the product’s supported removal method. Disabling a service may leave drivers behind, so an uninstall can be more effective when the vendor specifically recommends it. Restart, attempt the feature update, and reinstall a current compatible version after Windows is stable.

Use a clean restart to isolate software conflicts
A clean restart starts Windows with a reduced set of non-Microsoft services and startup programs. Microsoft documents this approach for separating background-software conflicts from Windows Update problems. Follow its clean-restart instructions, test the feature update, and then return Windows to normal startup afterward. Do not leave diagnostic startup settings in place permanently, because they can prevent expected security or utility software from loading.
Repair the component store and protected system files
Use an administrator account for these commands. Open Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin), run the first command, wait for it to finish, and then run the second:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
DISM repairs the Windows component store that supplies system files; System File Checker then scans protected files and replaces corrupted copies when possible. The scan can take time and may report that it found no integrity violations, repaired files, or could not repair everything. Restart after completion and check Update history if the feature update still fails. If either command reports an error, record the complete text instead of repeatedly running it without addressing that message.

Some eligible Windows 11 installations provide a repair reinstall that keeps the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings. Open:
- Settings > System > Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now and follow the prompts.
Microsoft says this process reinstalls the same version of Windows and preserves apps, files, and settings; it is not a feature-update bypass. The option may be absent on work- or school-managed PCs and on systems that do not have the required Windows version or prerequisite updates. If you do not see it, do not assume the installation is unsupported—continue with the error-code path and check whether pending Windows updates are required. Details are in Fix issues by reinstalling the current version of Windows.

Check rollout status and known issues before forcing another attempt
Microsoft does not offer every feature update to every eligible PC at once. It says it uses a “phased and measured approach” and offers an update when its data indicates that a device is ready. A temporary safeguard hold for a known hardware or software issue can therefore look like an installation problem even when your PC is otherwise healthy.
For Windows 11 version 24H2, consult the Windows 11, version 24H2 update history and its links to the Windows release health dashboard. Check the entry for the exact version you are attempting to install, including listed known issues, resolved problems, and safeguard holds. Do not buy hardware or repeatedly reset Windows merely because a rollout is not yet offered to your device.
When to stop troubleshooting yourself
- The System Reserved partition appears involved and you are not comfortable with partition layout or recovery procedures.
- DISM or SFC reports repairs it cannot complete, or the computer begins showing unrelated crashes, boot errors, or missing system files.
- The PC is managed by an employer or school; policies, VPN requirements, endpoint security, and update rings may be intentional.
- The same code returns after the troubleshooter, hardware removal, driver checks, and a clean restart.
- You cannot create a verified backup or the machine contains data subject to retention or regulatory requirements.
For a managed computer, contact the administrator before uninstalling security software, changing services, resizing partitions, or using recovery options. For a personal PC, preserve the code, Update history details, command output, and the exact steps already attempted so a technician can avoid repeating risky changes.

A repeatable order for the next attempt
- Back up personal files and disconnect nonessential external hardware.
- Open Update history and record the failed feature update and complete error code.
- Run the Windows Update troubleshooter in Get Help; use the manual troubleshooter path if necessary.
- Install pending Windows updates and compatible hardware drivers, then restart.
- Apply the code-specific branch: network/VPN and System Reserved checks for 0x800F0922, or storage cleanup for the 0x80070070 variants.
- Investigate third-party security software, clear the documented update cache, or perform a clean restart only when the earlier steps do not resolve the failure.
- Run DISM and SFC from an administrator terminal if damaged Windows components are suspected.
- Use Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now when the eligible option is present.
- Check the release-health information for the feature-update version before making another attempt.
This order keeps reversible checks ahead of partition changes and broad system repairs, while preserving the error evidence needed if the problem has to be escalated.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the 0x800F0922 code prove that my VPN is blocking the update?
No. Microsoft lists both an inability to reach Windows Update servers, including through a work VPN, and insufficient System Reserved partition space as possible causes. Test the network path first, then investigate storage carefully if the code remains.
Can I leave my USB backup drive connected during the feature update?
Use the drive to make and verify the backup, then disconnect it with other nonessential external hardware before retrying the installation. The USB drive protects your data; it does not repair Windows Update.
Why is “Fix problems using Windows Update” missing from Recovery?
Microsoft says the option may be unavailable on work- or school-managed PCs or on systems missing the required Windows version or prerequisite updates. Its absence is not proof that your hardware is defective.
