The right fix depends on one fact: can you still open Windows 11? If the desktop works, back up your files, record the exact Windows Update error, run the automated troubleshooter in Get Help, and then follow the guidance for that error. If Windows will not start, use Windows Recovery Environment (Windows RE) and try Startup Repair or Uninstall Updates. On supported PCs, Fix problems using Windows Update can reinstall the current Windows 11 version while preserving apps, files, and settings. Use the least disruptive option that matches the failure, and do not remove a security update or reset the PC before protecting your data.
Start with a decision: does Windows still open?
Use the table below to choose the correct branch. Desktop troubleshooting steps such as Get Help, DISM, SFC, and Settings paths require a running Windows session. Recovery tools are designed for a machine that cannot reach the desktop.

| Windows opens normally, but an update fails to download or install | Back up files, capture the error code, then run the Windows Update troubleshooter in Get Help. | The same code remains after a restart and the problem-specific Microsoft guidance has been followed. |
| Windows opens, and the trouble began immediately after one update | Consider Settings > Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates, after reviewing the risks. | The update cannot be removed, is a security update, or removal does not restore normal operation. |
| Windows will not boot to the desktop | In Windows RE, choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options, then Startup Repair or Uninstall Updates according to the symptom. | Windows RE is unavailable, recovery tools fail, or the device shows a BitLocker or hardware-related problem. |
Do not repeatedly apply unrelated fixes. An error code, the point at which the process fails, and whether one particular update preceded the problem are more useful than a generic list of tweaks.

Back up personal data first
Before changing update components or recovery settings, copy important documents, photos, project files, and other irreplaceable data. Microsoft’s update guidance identifies two practical choices:
#1 Best Overall
- Less chaos, more calm. The refreshed design of Windows 11 enables you to do what you want effortlessly.
- Biometric logins. Encrypted authentication. And, of course, advanced antivirus defenses. Everything you need, plus more, to protect you against the latest cyberthreats.
- Make the most of your screen space with snap layouts, desktops, and seamless redocking.
- Widgets makes staying up-to-date with the content you love and the news you care about, simple.
- Stay in touch with friends and family with Microsoft Teams, which can be seamlessly integrated into your taskbar. (1)
- Copy files to a USB drive that is large enough for the data you need to preserve.
- Sync or upload the files to OneDrive, then verify that the files are available from another device or the OneDrive website.
A backup is especially important before uninstalling a security update, using recovery options, or creating installation media. The built-in troubleshooter and repair reinstall are intended to be less disruptive, but no repair path should be treated as a substitute for a current backup.
Capture the exact update and code
Open Settings > Windows Update > Update history while Windows is running. Record the update name or knowledge-base number, the date, and the complete hexadecimal error code. A photograph or screenshot is useful if you need to work from another device. Do not shorten a code: similar-looking codes can indicate different next steps.
Describe when the failure occurs
- Download stage: the update never finishes downloading or repeatedly starts over.
- Install stage: installation stops at a percentage, rolls back, or reports an error before restart.
- Restart stage: the computer restarts repeatedly, shows a recovery screen, or no longer reaches the sign-in page.
- After one update: the desktop worked until a named update installed, then a specific app, driver, or startup process failed.
This description determines whether you should remain in Settings or move to Windows RE; it is not proof of a single cause.

When Windows still opens: use the least disruptive fixes first
1. Run the automated troubleshooter in Get Help
Microsoft says Windows 11 users should begin with the automated Windows Update troubleshooter in the Get Help app. Open Get Help from the Start menu, search for Windows Update troubleshooting, and run the guided diagnostic. Allow it to complete its checks and apply any offered repair. Restart the PC afterward, then open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
If the same error returns, stop repeating the troubleshooter. Use the exact code to select Microsoft’s problem-specific instructions. The troubleshooter can correct common configuration issues, but it is not a universal repair for every update or hardware condition.
2. Treat the error code as a clue
An error code narrows the possibilities; it does not by itself prove the cause. Microsoft’s troubleshooting material gives examples such as these:
| Example code or pattern | Possible direction indicated by Microsoft | What to check next |
|---|---|---|
0xC1900101 |
Driver incompatibility is a possible cause. | Check for updated device drivers and disconnect unnecessary external hardware before retrying. Follow the current Microsoft instructions for this code. |
0x800f0922 |
Insufficient available space is associated with this code in Microsoft’s guidance. | Check free space on the Windows system drive and remove or move data only after confirming it is backed up. |
| Codes associated with update services or cache | The update service state or cached download may be involved. | Use the code-specific Microsoft procedure rather than deleting folders or changing services at random. |
| Codes associated with interrupted downloads | The download may not have completed cleanly. | Restart, confirm a stable connection, and then follow the matching official guidance. |
| Codes associated with file or configuration problems | Windows components or configuration data may be damaged. | After basic checks, use the DISM-then-SFC sequence described below. |
The code table is a triage aid, not a diagnosis. Microsoft can revise its mappings and instructions, so use the current page for the complete procedure attached to your code.
3. Check space, restart, and remove simple conflicts
Low storage can prevent an update from unpacking or committing its files. In Settings > System > Storage, review available space on the Windows drive. Empty temporary data only when you know it is safe to remove, and do not delete personal files that are not backed up.
Restart Windows before another attempt. A restart clears a pending reboot and reloads update services without changing personal files. If the failure appears only when a third-party program is running, Microsoft’s guidance discusses a clean restart to isolate software conflicts. Use that approach only when you can return the system to its normal startup configuration afterward.
For a code associated with drivers, check the computer and device manufacturers’ current drivers, especially for storage, chipset, graphics, and network hardware. Disconnect nonessential USB devices during the retry. Keep any device that Windows needs for input or network access connected.
4. Handle antivirus changes cautiously
Microsoft’s troubleshooting material may discuss pausing or removing security software for a relevant error. Do this only when the official instructions for your code call for it. Before changing protection, make sure you know how to restore it, have the installer or recovery method available, and can reinstall it if necessary. Do not leave the PC unprotected after the test; restore protection before ordinary use.
5. Repair Windows components with DISM, then SFC
If the error-specific guidance points to damaged system files or components, use an elevated Command Prompt. Open Start, type Command Prompt, choose Run as administrator, and approve the User Account Control prompt. Run the commands in this order:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth- After DISM reports that it has finished, run
sfc /scannow.
Let each command reach completion; closing the window early can leave a repair unfinished. DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC relies on, while SFC checks protected system files. When both commands finish, restart and try Windows Update again. If either command reports an error, record the exact message and use Microsoft’s instructions for that result instead of repeatedly rerunning it.
6. Use “Fix problems using Windows Update” when it is available
On some supported Windows 11 installations, Microsoft provides a repair reinstall at Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now. Microsoft says this reinstalls the current Windows version to repair system files and components while preserving installed apps, personal files, and settings.
The option is not exposed on every Windows 11 build or configuration. If you see it, connect the PC to power and keep it connected to the internet for the entire process. Save work and close applications first. Do not turn off the computer while the reinstall is running. If the option is absent, that absence does not mean Windows is unsupported; it means this particular repair path is not available in the current configuration.

Security update removal carries risk because it can expose the PC to vulnerabilities that the update addressed. Read Microsoft’s warning and use the repair reinstall option first when it is available and appropriate. If the update is not listed, the uninstall fails, or the original problem remains, reinstalling the update may not be the correct next step; return to the code-specific guidance or use Windows RE if the machine has stopped booting.

Open the recovery tools
Windows Recovery Environment (Windows RE) is the recovery interface used when normal startup fails. When it appears, choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options. Keep these instructions separate from desktop procedures: Windows RE does not provide the normal Settings app or an ordinary elevated Command Prompt workflow.
Try Startup Repair for a startup failure
Microsoft Support defines it this way: “Startup Repair is a Windows recovery tool that can fix certain system problems that might prevent Windows from starting.” In Windows RE, choose Startup Repair and allow the diagnostic to finish. It may restart the computer while it works.
Startup Repair targets certain startup problems; it is not a guarantee that every failed update, driver, or hardware fault will be corrected. If it reports that it could not repair the PC, note the message and return to Advanced options rather than repeatedly interrupting the process.
Use Uninstall Updates when the boot failure follows an update
If the computer stopped booting immediately after a particular update, choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall Updates in Windows RE. Select the available update category and follow the on-screen confirmation. This route is specifically for a recent update that appears to have triggered the startup problem; it is not a general replacement for Startup Repair.
Some updates cannot be removed, and removing a security update has the same security implications as removing one from Settings. If Windows returns to the desktop, back up files again, check Windows Update history, and follow the official instructions for the original code or update.
When Windows RE is unavailable
If the PC cannot enter recovery and you do not have a recovery drive or repair disc, Microsoft describes creating Windows installation media with the Media Creation Tool. Use another working computer to obtain the tool from Microsoft, create the media on a USB drive, and start the affected PC from that media by following the manufacturer’s documented boot instructions. Do not guess a model-specific function key.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Installation media can provide access to recovery options when the internal environment is inaccessible. The storage capacity required depends on the media you are creating, so check Microsoft’s current media instructions before choosing a USB drive. A USB drive is optional for PCs that already reach Windows RE; it is not required for Get Help, DISM, SFC, Startup Repair, or an update uninstall from the built-in menus.
Recognize cases that need different help
A BitLocker recovery prompt can require the recovery key associated with the device or organization. Hardware failure, a damaged drive, or a firmware problem can also look like an update failure but will not be solved by ordinary Windows Update steps. The Windows 11 update procedures here do not diagnose those device-specific conditions. Preserve any displayed message and seek the computer manufacturer, your organization’s administrator, or Microsoft support as appropriate.
Choose the intervention with the smallest data and security impact
| Option | Use it when | Effect and cautions |
|---|---|---|
| Get Help Windows Update troubleshooter | Windows opens and the cause is not yet clear. | Automated, low-disruption first step. Restart and recheck Windows Update afterward. |
| Storage, restart, driver, or clean-start checks | The code or symptoms point to space, a pending reboot, a driver, or a software conflict. | Usually reversible, but restore normal startup settings and security software after testing. |
| DISM followed by SFC | System files or components may be corrupted. | Repairs Windows files from an elevated Command Prompt; wait for each command to finish. |
| Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now | A supported Windows 11 PC offers the option and ordinary repairs have not worked. | Microsoft says it preserves apps, files, and settings; power and internet are required throughout. |
| Uninstall Updates | A named recent update clearly preceded the problem. | Some updates cannot be removed; removing a security update can reduce protection. |
| Startup Repair | Windows will not start and the failure is a startup problem. | Attempts to repair certain startup issues; success is not guaranteed. |
| Installation media | Windows RE and other built-in recovery options are unavailable. | Requires another working computer and suitable removable media; follow Microsoft’s media directions. |
A reset or clean installation is more disruptive than the repair paths above and is not the first response to an ordinary failed update. Consider those options only after backups, Microsoft’s supported recovery steps, and any organization-specific requirements have been addressed.
Practical branches for common symptoms
The download fails before installation begins
Record the code, check available system-drive space, restart, and run the Get Help troubleshooter. If the code points to update services or a cached download, use Microsoft’s procedure for that code instead of deleting update folders manually. A stable network connection and a restart can resolve an interrupted transaction, but a repeated code needs the matching official instructions.
Installation rolls back or fails with a driver-related code
For an example such as 0xC1900101, review drivers and remove unnecessary external devices before retrying. Check the manufacturer’s current driver packages for hardware involved in storage, graphics, networking, or chipset functions. Do not replace a working driver with an unverified package simply because an update failed; use the code-specific Microsoft and manufacturer guidance.
The update completes, then the PC cannot reach the desktop
Move to Windows RE. Try Startup Repair first when the symptom is a general startup failure. If the timing points directly to the update, use Uninstall Updates from Advanced options. If neither works, preserve the error message, consider installation media if recovery is unavailable, and investigate BitLocker or hardware causes rather than repeating desktop commands.
The repair option is missing from Settings
Fix problems using Windows Update is limited to supported configurations, so its absence is expected on some PCs. Continue with Get Help, code-specific guidance, DISM/SFC where indicated, or Windows RE according to the state of the machine. Do not assume that a missing menu means the installation must be reset.
After Windows starts again
Confirm that the desktop, network, storage, and essential applications work before starting another update. Check Settings > Windows Update > Update history so you know whether the failed update was installed, rolled back, or removed. Re-enable normal startup services and security protection if you changed them during troubleshooting. Keep the backup you made until the system has completed a successful update and a normal restart.
If the issue returns, preserve the new error code and the exact point of failure. Use that information with Microsoft’s current problem-specific instructions or with your organization’s support team. A Windows 11 update problem can arise from storage, services, drivers, damaged components, or a startup condition; matching the tool to the state of the PC is safer than applying every available fix.
