What “not getting the Windows 11 update” can mean
A missing Windows 11 update is not always a broken update client. Windows feature updates are released in phases, so two compatible computers can receive the offer at different times. Microsoft can also withhold an update from a particular device when testing identifies an application or driver conflict. That temporary block is called a safeguard hold.

The symptom matters. “Windows Update is up to date” with no feature-upgrade offer is different from a download that stops at a percentage, an installation that rolls back, or an update that displays an error code. The safest response is to collect that evidence before attempting disruptive repairs.
| What you see | Most likely category | First response |
|---|---|---|
| No Windows 11 feature update is offered | Staged rollout, safeguard hold, pause, policy, or compatibility issue | Check pause and management settings, then review Microsoft release-health notices |
| Windows Update reports a pending restart | Previous update has unfinished actions | Restart, sign in again, and check for updates |
| Download or installation fails with a code | Incomplete download, low storage, permissions, network, or security-software interference | Record the code and follow the matching Microsoft troubleshooting branch |
| Work or school computer never sees an update deployed by the administrator | Deployment ring, policy, or update-endpoint mismatch | Ask the administrator to verify policy and the scan source |
Protect your files before changing Windows Update
Back up personal files before repair or upgrade work. Microsoft’s guidance gives copying files to a USB drive as one example; an external drive with enough capacity is also suitable for a larger backup. Open a few copied documents or photos from the backup so you know the copy is usable. Keep the computer connected to reliable power during the later update attempt.

- Less chaos, more calm. The refreshed design of Windows 11 enables you to do what you want effortlessly.
- Biometric logins. Encrypted authentication. And, of course, advanced antivirus defenses. Everything you need, plus more, to protect you against the latest cyberthreats.
- Make the most of your screen space with snap layouts, desktops, and seamless redocking.
- Widgets makes staying up-to-date with the content you love and the news you care about, simple.
- Stay in touch with friends and family with Microsoft Teams, which can be seamlessly integrated into your taskbar. (1)
- Save work from every open application and close programs that are not required.
- Make sure the backup includes documents, desktop files, pictures, browser exports, and any local project folders you cannot recreate.
- Record the exact Windows Update message or error code, including any percentage at which the process stops.
A small USB flash drive is convenient for essential documents, while an external SSD is more practical for a large photo, video, or project collection. The important requirement is a verified copy, not a particular brand or storage type. Keep the backup disconnected after copying if you are concerned about accidental deletion or malware changing both copies.
Run the low-risk repair sequence first
1. Start the Windows Update troubleshooter
On Windows 11, open the Get Help app from the Start menu. Search for Windows Update troubleshooting and start the automated troubleshooter. Microsoft’s current instruction is: “If you are using a Windows 11 device, start by running the automated Windows Update troubleshooter in the Get Help app.” Follow each suggested repair and allow the app to apply changes when it offers that option.
If Get Help is unavailable or does not complete the check, use the Settings route Microsoft also lists: Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Windows Update > Run. The diagnostic can detect configuration problems without requiring you to reset update storage manually.

Write down what the diagnostic reports. A message that it repaired a service or configuration issue is useful evidence; a message that no problem was found makes rollout, compatibility, or management explanations more important. Do not run several unrelated “repair” utilities at the same time, because you will not know which change affected the next scan.
2. Restart, then check again
Choose Start > Power > Restart, rather than merely closing the lid or selecting Shut down. A restart can complete pending update actions and release an application that was blocking installation. After signing in, open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. Leave the computer connected to power and avoid interrupting a download or installation.
3. Confirm that updates are not paused
In Settings > Windows Update, look for a message stating that updates are paused. If the page provides Resume updates, select it and then choose Check for updates. A pause can be intentional, but it also explains why a feature update is not being offered. If the pause control is unavailable or immediately returns, the setting may be enforced by an organization.
4. Check whether another restart is required
Windows Update can show a restart notification even when the main page appears idle. Complete the restart and return to Windows Update. Do not start additional repair procedures while Windows is still waiting to finish the previous update.
5. Verify the Windows Update service
Press Windows key + R, enter services.msc, and press Enter. In the Services window, locate Windows Update. Its status should indicate that it is running. If it is stopped, open its context menu and choose Start; if it is already running but scans do nothing, choose Restart when available. Close Services, restart Windows, and check for updates again.
Do not change unrelated services or startup settings while diagnosing this problem. A service change that fixes one scan but prevents sign-in, networking, or security software from starting can create a harder problem to reverse.
Identify the cause when the update is still missing
Staged rollout
Feature updates are not delivered to every eligible device simultaneously. Microsoft expands availability in stages and monitors the results. Your computer can therefore be compatible and fully functional while the offer is still absent. Repeatedly pressing Check for updates does not necessarily move a device ahead of the rollout schedule.
Use Microsoft’s Windows release-health information to see whether the version is being rolled out gradually or whether a known issue affects your hardware or software. The date and version listed on that page matter; release status can change as Microsoft resolves problems. A staged rollout requires patience, not repeated cache deletions or random registry changes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSafeguard hold for an application or driver
Microsoft says: “If we detect that your device may have an issue, such as an application or driver incompatibility, we may put a safeguard hold in place and not offer the update until that issue is resolved.” A safeguard hold is a compatibility control, not proof that the Windows Update client is damaged.
Check the release-health notices for the Windows version you are trying to install. If Microsoft identifies a blocked application or driver, update or remove that item only according to the vendor’s documented procedure. Do not bypass a safeguard hold simply to obtain the feature update; the hold exists because the known conflict can cause installation failure, a rollback, or loss of a device function. If the notice says a fix is being deployed, allow time for the hold to be reviewed rather than assuming the computer needs a full reset.
Updates are managed by an employer or school
On a managed computer, an administrator may control the deployment ring, pause periods, approval rules, or the Windows Update service. The device can also scan a different Windows Update service than the one where an update was deployed. Microsoft Learn identifies this wrong-endpoint situation as a troubleshooting possibility.
Contact the administrator rather than changing policy locally. Ask them to verify:
Recommended Free Tools
- which Windows version and feature-update ring the device is assigned to;
- whether a pause, deferral, approval, or deadline policy is active;
- that the device is checking the intended update endpoint;
- that required servicing prerequisites and restart deadlines are satisfied; and
- whether Microsoft has documented a safeguard hold for the device’s applications or drivers.
Tell the administrator whether the machine is connected through a company network, virtual private network, or remote-management agent. Those details can help distinguish a local scanning problem from a deployment-policy problem. Do not remove management software or disconnect security controls to make a feature update appear.
Network, storage, permissions, or security-software interference
Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance groups common failures into incomplete downloads, insufficient free space, permissions, and interference from security software. A metered, unstable, or captive-portal connection can interrupt a scan or download. Free enough storage for the update and temporary installation files before retrying, and complete any sign-in required by the network.
Use an administrator account when Windows requests permission. If third-party security software is reported as interfering, consult its documented update-compatibility instructions before changing protection settings. Do not leave protection disabled after testing, and do not treat a security warning as evidence that the computer is infected.
For a laptop, test from a reliable home or office connection instead of a weak public hotspot. Avoid starting the upgrade while switching between networks, using an unstable VPN, or closing the lid. If a connection is metered by design, check the Windows network setting and your organization’s policy before changing it; a managed device may be required to remain metered.

If Windows displays a code, photograph or copy it exactly. The characters before and after the hyphen can identify a different failure. Search Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting guidance for that exact code and follow the corresponding branch.
| Evidence in the message | What to check manually | What not to do first |
|---|---|---|
| Download did not complete | Network stability, restart requirement, Windows Update service, and whether the troubleshooter reports a damaged configuration | Do not repeatedly power off during a download |
| Not enough space | Available system-drive storage and whether removable media is being used for the backup rather than the installation | Do not delete unknown system folders just to create space |
| Access or permission failure | Whether the account has administrator rights and whether an organization controls the device | Do not take ownership of protected folders without a documented reason |
| Security software or application conflict | Recent software changes, compatibility notices, and the release-health page | Do not permanently disable antivirus or endpoint protection |
Capture the code before closing the error window, and note whether it appeared during checking, downloading, installing, or restarting. That timing is often as useful as the code itself. If the code changes after every attempt, stop repeating the same procedure and escalate with the complete sequence rather than treating each new code as an unrelated problem.
Can you force Windows 11 to update?
There is a difference between asking Windows to check again and bypassing Microsoft’s delivery controls. Selecting Check for updates after a restart is a normal scan. Using unofficial scripts, registry edits, or installation workarounds to bypass a safeguard hold is not a safe first step. Microsoft may be withholding the offer because a known driver or application conflict can cause a rollback or loss of functionality.
On a work or school PC, forcing an installation can also violate the organization’s deployment ring, approval, or endpoint policy. Ask the administrator whether the update has been approved for your group. On a personal PC, wait for a staged offer unless Microsoft’s release-health guidance specifically tells you how to resolve the blocking compatibility item.

Recheck after a clean restart
After the troubleshooter, service check, and restart, open Windows Update again and note the exact status. If it says the device is up to date but the feature update is absent, that points more strongly to staged availability, a safeguard hold, or management than to a transient scan failure.

Review release-health and known-issue notices
Microsoft publishes release-health notices for Windows versions, including known issues and safeguards. Compare your edition, version, applications, and hardware with the notice. A hold can remain until Microsoft verifies a fix; waiting is safer than forcing an upgrade that Microsoft has deliberately withheld. The Windows Experience Blog’s September 30, 2025 guidance for the Windows 11 2025 Update also explains that availability can expand over time, so the absence of an offer is not by itself evidence of a failed computer.
Use Feedback Hub for an unresolved personal-PC issue
If the computer is not managed, no pause is active, the Windows Update service runs, and Microsoft lists no applicable hold, submit the details through Feedback Hub. Include the Windows version, the update page’s wording, the error code if present, and the steps already completed. Avoid uploading personal documents or screenshots that expose sensitive information.
A practical decision checklist
Use this order to choose the least risky next action:
- No offer and no error: check for a pause, management, staged rollout, or safeguard hold.
- Pending restart: restart once, sign in, and scan again before changing services.
- Download or install error: record the exact code and follow Microsoft’s matching troubleshooting branch.
- Managed device: stop local experimentation and ask the administrator to verify ring, policy, prerequisites, and endpoint.
- Repeated rollback or service failure: escalate with your notes instead of deleting update data or changing the registry.
This sequence compares the symptom, the device’s management scope, the available evidence, and the risk of each action. Reversible diagnostics come before resets, cache deletion, or reinstallation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.When to escalate
Ask Microsoft support or your organization’s administrator for help when the same error returns after the troubleshooter and restart, the service cannot be started, the device repeatedly rolls back an installation, or the release-health page identifies a hold you cannot resolve. Managed-device users should escalate before changing registry settings, deleting update caches, or using unofficial installation workarounds; those actions can violate policy and remove evidence needed for diagnosis.
Keep the following information ready:
- the exact Windows Update message and error code;
- the date and time of the failed attempt;
- whether the computer is personal, work-managed, or school-managed;
- the result of the Get Help troubleshooter;
- whether a restart was pending; and
- any application, driver, storage, network, or security change made immediately before the failure.
As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can look for common Windows issues, clean temporary and cache files, review vulnerabilities, and show an app-crash log; it complements antivirus software rather than replacing it. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7, offers a free trial by category for at least two days, and results vary, so it cannot repair every update failure or crash.
How to tell whether the update is finally progressing
When Windows Update offers the feature update, read the version and restart requirements before selecting installation. Keep the backup, power, and network connection in place. During installation, the computer may restart more than once; interrupting it can leave Windows needing recovery. After the final sign-in, return to Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, and install any remaining quality or driver updates shown there.

Frequently asked questions
Why is Windows 11 not showing even though my PC is compatible?
Compatibility does not guarantee immediate delivery. Microsoft may still be expanding a staged rollout or applying a safeguard hold for an application or driver. Check release-health notices after confirming that updates are not paused or managed.
How do I force Windows 11 to update?
Restart, run the Get Help Windows Update troubleshooter, resume updates if they are paused, and select Check for updates. Do not bypass a safeguard hold with unofficial tools; resolve the listed compatibility issue or wait for Microsoft to clear it.
What if Windows Update says my device is up to date?
That message can mean the feature update has not reached your rollout group, is held for compatibility, or is controlled by an administrator. It does not necessarily mean the newest feature version is available for every eligible PC.
Should I delete the Windows Update cache?
Not as a first step. Microsoft’s recommended sequence starts with backup, the automated troubleshooter, restart, service and pause checks, and error-code guidance. Cache deletion can remove useful diagnostic evidence and is especially inappropriate on a managed computer without administrator direction.
Can antivirus software stop the update?
Microsoft lists security-software interference as one possible cause of download or installation failures. Follow the security vendor’s documented compatibility procedure, keep protection enabled whenever possible, and do not leave it disabled after testing.
Why does a work computer miss an update that my personal PC received?
An organization can assign different deployment rings, pauses, approvals, or deadlines. The computer may also scan a different Windows Update endpoint from the one where the update was deployed. The administrator must verify those settings.
How long should I wait during a staged rollout?
There is no single waiting period that applies to every device. Microsoft expands availability while monitoring issues, and release-health status can change. Check the listed version and known issues periodically rather than repeatedly forcing scans.
What should I do if the update keeps rolling back?
Stop repeating the installation, record the error and the point at which rollback occurs, review release-health notices for application or driver holds, and contact Microsoft support or your administrator. Keep your backup available before another attempt.
