Windows 11 error 0x80070032 means “The request is not supported.” Microsoft maps the hexadecimal code to Win32 error 50 (ERROR_NOT_SUPPORTED), but the code does not identify which Windows component rejected the request. It may appear during System Restore, Reset this PC, Windows Backup, Windows Update, a network-file operation, or another application.
There is therefore no reliable one-command cure. First identify the operation that produced the message, protect your personal files, and then use the least disruptive recovery tool that matches the failure.

What error 0x80070032 means
Microsoft’s Win32 system-error table defines error 50 (0x32) as ERROR_NOT_SUPPORTED: “The request is not supported.” The HRESULT 0x80070032 carries that status from the component handling the operation. The wording describes the rejected request, not the underlying cause.
That distinction matters when a message appears to be a “restore” problem. A System Restore point, a Windows backup, a reset, and a file operation can all return the same HRESULT while requiring different remedies. Treat the text shown immediately before or after the code as evidence about which subsystem failed. Microsoft’s definition is documented in the Win32 system-error table.

Identify the operation before changing anything
Write down the complete message, the screen or application where it appeared, and what you clicked. Do not assume that “restore” means System Restore.
- System Restore: Windows was reverting system files, drivers, applications, or settings to a restore point.
- Reset this PC: Windows was preparing a reset that can remove applications and settings, depending on the option selected.
- Windows Backup or System Image Recovery: A backup or image was being created or applied.
- Windows Update: The code appeared while installing or rolling back an update.
- Network or shared-drive operation: A request involving a network location or file share was rejected.
- Another application: The application’s own recovery or file-management function returned the HRESULT.
If the dialog contains a product name, drive letter, path, update identifier, or restore-point date, keep that information. It determines which of the procedures below is appropriate and prevents you from applying a boot repair to a file-share problem.
Protect personal files first
Recovery tools are not a substitute for a personal-file backup. Microsoft warns that some recovery choices can remove applications, settings, or other data. Copy documents, photos, project files, browser exports, and other irreplaceable material to a separate external drive or a trusted cloud location before attempting a reset, image restore, or reinstall.
A Windows Recovery Drive is USB recovery media; it does not contain your personal files. Creating or using one does not create a backup of your documents. Microsoft separates recovery media from personal-file backup in its Windows recovery-options guidance. Verify that your backup opens and contains the files you need before proceeding with a destructive option.
Choose the least disruptive recovery path
Use this decision table after identifying the failing operation. Start with the row that matches your evidence rather than trying every tool in sequence.
| Situation | First choice | What it changes | What must exist |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows starts and a usable restore point is listed | System Restore | Reverts system state, including recent drivers, applications, and settings; personal files are intended to remain | A restore point that Windows can read |
| Windows does not start | Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) | Provides recovery tools without requiring a normal Windows desktop | Access to WinRE, built-in recovery files, or suitable recovery media |
| Boot failure is the main symptom | Startup Repair in WinRE | Attempts to correct problems preventing Windows from starting | A boot problem that Startup Repair can diagnose |
| A known-good system image exists | System Image Recovery in WinRE | Restores the image’s system state | A compatible, usable system image and its storage |
| The failure involves a network file or share | Check the connection, then run targeted integrity checks | Tests Windows files and the component store; it does not prove that every 0x80070032 event is a corruption issue | An elevated command shell and a working Windows installation |
| No restore point or image is usable | Another supported recovery option, after confirming the backup | May remove applications or settings, depending on the choice | A verified backup and, when required, recovery media |
Microsoft describes System Restore, Startup Repair, System Image Recovery, and Command Prompt as WinRE tools in its backup, restore, and recovery documentation.
If Windows still starts
Use System Restore when a restore point is available
- Open Settings > System > Recovery.
- Review the recovery options and select the System Restore route if it is offered.
- Choose a restore point dated before the change that preceded the error. Read the affected-program information shown by the wizard before confirming.
- Save your work, close open applications, and allow Windows to restart and complete the operation without interrupting power.
- After Windows starts, check whether the original driver, application, or setting problem has gone and confirm that your personal files are present.
System Restore is designed to revert the PC’s state to an earlier point while preserving personal files. It can, however, roll back drivers, installed programs, and system settings made after the selected point. If the wizard itself returns 0x80070032, record the restore-point date and the exact stage at which it failed; do not repeatedly retry a damaged point without another recovery plan.

When System Restore has no usable point
A missing, damaged, or inaccessible restore point cannot be repaired by selecting the same point again. Keep the verified personal-file backup, then review the other choices under Settings > System > Recovery. A reset or reinstall may be appropriate, but read the option’s data-retention description first: some choices remove applications and settings, and a clean installation can remove the Windows volume’s contents. If the error arose from an update or a particular application rather than from a restore point, use that component’s supported recovery or rollback path instead of treating it as a System Restore failure.
If Windows will not start: use WinRE
Enter the Windows Recovery Environment and open Troubleshoot > Advanced options. The available entries can vary by installation and recovery media. Choose the tool that matches the symptom:
System Restore
Select this when a restore point predates the problem and the point is available to WinRE. It is the closest equivalent to the desktop procedure, but it still depends on a readable restore point.
Startup Repair
Use Startup Repair when Windows fails to boot, repeatedly returns to recovery, or stops before the sign-in screen. It is aimed at startup problems, not at every situation that happens to display 0x80070032.

System Image Recovery
Choose this only when you have a known-good system image and want to restore that image. Confirm that the image is the one you intend to apply and that your separate personal-file backup is current.
Command Prompt
Command Prompt is for diagnosis and targeted repairs when the graphical tools do not fit the evidence. Avoid deleting files or changing boot configuration on speculation; an incorrect command can make recovery harder.
If WinRE reports the same code, capture the full message and identify which tool generated it. The HRESULT still means that a particular request was unsupported; it does not establish that the entire recovery environment is broken.

When 0x80070032 appeared while creating or using a file on a network location, first confirm that the computer is connected to the intended network, the share is reachable, and the account still has permission to use it. Test a local file operation as a comparison. A failure limited to the network path points toward the connection, share, or access context rather than automatically proving Windows system-file damage.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor that specific scenario, Microsoft Community Support recommends running the following commands in an elevated Command Prompt or Windows Terminal, one at a time:
sfc /scannow
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Open an administrator command shell.
- Run
sfc /scannowand wait for its verification to finish. - Run each DISM command in the order shown, waiting for one to complete before starting the next.
- Restart Windows, reconnect to the network share, and repeat the original operation.
The commands inspect and, where possible, repair protected system files and the Windows component store. This sequence is scenario-specific guidance from a Microsoft Q&A response; it is not evidence of a universal fix for every 0x80070032 event. If the commands report that no corruption was found and the network operation still fails, return to the connection, share, permissions, and application context rather than repeating the scan indefinitely.
What to do after a failed recovery attempt
Keep the error context
Record whether the failure occurred before, during, or after the restart; the restore-point date or image name; the drive or share involved; and any additional code. This information distinguishes a rejected request from a boot failure or a damaged recovery source.
Try a different supported recovery source
If one restore point fails, another point may be usable. If no point works, WinRE’s Startup Repair, System Image Recovery, or another supported recovery option may better match the symptom. Do not assume that changing tools preserves the same data: image recovery and reset choices can replace more of the system than System Restore.

Escalate before a reset or reinstall
Before selecting a reset that can remove applications or settings, verify the backup on another device or in the cloud. Ensure you can reinstall essential applications and retrieve license information where applicable. If the computer is managed by an organization, contact its administrator before changing recovery or update settings. A reset or reinstall should be the informed final option after the failing component and the data-retention consequences are clear.
Preventing a repeat failure
- Keep a current backup of personal files separate from Windows recovery media.
- Note the date of major driver, application, and configuration changes so a restore point can be selected intelligently.
- Maintain access to WinRE or suitable recovery media before a boot failure occurs.
- When a network operation fails, test both a local location and the network location so the scope of the problem is clear.
- Save the complete error text instead of relying only on the hexadecimal code.
These practices do not change what 0x80070032 means, but they reduce the chance that troubleshooting turns into data loss or an unnecessary reinstall.
