It is not a diagnosis of one specific fault, so the correct fix depends on whether it appears in Windows Update, setup, Microsoft Store or MSIX installation, or sign-in. Start by recording the exact context, then use Windows’ built-in diagnostics and repairs in the order below.
For an update failure, the safest sequence is: run the Windows Update troubleshooter in Get Help, check storage and software blockers, repair the component store with DISM, verify protected files with SFC, reset the Windows Update cache, test with a clean restart, and check the disk if necessary. Keep the failed KB number and Windows build for any escalation.

What error 0x80070032 means
Microsoft’s Win32 error table defines 0x00000032 as ERROR_NOT_SUPPORTED — “The request is not supported.” Windows commonly displays the HRESULT form 0x80070032. The code tells you that a component rejected the requested operation; it does not identify whether the underlying problem is corruption, an incompatible package, insufficient storage, a blocked service, or a startup conflict.
The same hexadecimal value can have a more specific meaning in MSIX Core: a package may contain package-support-framework functionality that the environment does not support. That is why a registry tweak found in a forum is not a safe universal answer. First determine which component produced the message.

Identify exactly where the failure occurs
- Open Settings → Windows Update → Update history. Record the failed KB number and the date shown there.
- Press
Win, typewinver, and open it. Record the Windows edition and build number. - Write down the complete wording of the error and the point at which it appears: download, installation, restart, Microsoft Store installation, setup, or sign-in.
- Note whether the failure happens every time or only with one update or package. That distinction determines whether you should repair Windows components or investigate package support.
Do not assume that an error shown during a Store or MSIX installation is a Windows Update problem. Conversely, do not start by changing package settings when the failed KB is clearly listed in Update history.
Safe checks before repairing Windows
- Storage: Make sure the system drive has adequate free space. Windows does not publish one universal free-space threshold for every update, so use the space requirement shown by the update or installation process when one is provided.
- External hardware: Disconnect unnecessary USB drives, printers, hubs, and other peripherals. Leave connected only hardware required for the update.
- VPN: Temporarily disconnect a VPN while testing Windows Update. Restore it after the test.
- Security software: If a third-party antivirus or security program is installed, temporarily disable it only long enough to test the update, then turn protection back on immediately.
- Power and network: Keep the PC connected to power and use a stable network connection while downloading or installing an update.
These checks are diagnostic, not a claim that any one item is the cause. If the error appears during sign-in or a Store package installation, storage and peripherals may be unrelated; use the context-specific guidance below instead of repeatedly resetting Windows Update.
Run Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooter
On Windows 11, Microsoft directs users to the automated troubleshooter in the Get Help app. It performs diagnostics and attempts common repairs without requiring you to edit the registry.
- Open Get Help from the Start menu.
- Search for Windows Update troubleshooter and start the automated diagnostic.
- Allow it to complete its checks and apply any suggested repair.
- Restart the PC if Get Help requests it.
- Return to Settings → Windows Update and select Check for updates.
If the same KB fails again, keep the troubleshooter’s result and continue with component repair. Running the troubleshooter does not prove that the update package itself is defective; it only rules out or repairs common service and configuration problems.

Repair the Windows component store with DISM
A damaged component store can prevent Windows from servicing an update. DISM repairs the online Windows image and is the supported step before checking protected system files.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth. - Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window or power off the PC while it is working.
- A successful repair reports that the restore operation completed successfully. Record any different message or error code before continuing.
- Restart Windows even if the command reports success.
The command repairs the running Windows installation; it does not install the failed KB by itself. After the restart, retry Windows Update once. If it still fails, continue with SFC rather than repeatedly running DISM.
Verify protected system files with SFC
System File Checker compares protected Windows files with their expected versions and repairs files it can replace.

- Restart the computer when the scan finishes.
- Try the failed update again and note whether the result changes.
DISM followed by SFC is the useful order: DISM repairs the image that supplies system files, and SFC then checks the protected files in the installed system. Keep the final SFC message if escalation becomes necessary.

Reset the Windows Update download cache
A damaged Windows Update cache can make the same package fail repeatedly. Resetting it removes downloaded update data so Windows can obtain a fresh copy; it does not erase personal documents.
- Save open work and sign in with an account that can approve administrator actions.
- Open the Services app from Start.
- Find Windows Update, open its context menu, and choose Stop. Wait until the service shows that it has stopped.
- In File Explorer, go to
C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution. - Delete the contents of that folder, not the
SoftwareDistributionfolder itself. If a file is locked, confirm that the Windows Update service is stopped before trying again. - Return to Services, open Windows Update, and choose Start.
- Restart Windows, then open Settings → Windows Update and retry the failed KB.
The first retry may take longer because Windows has to download the package again. If the same KB fails with the same code after a fresh download, move to conflict isolation and evidence gathering rather than clearing the cache repeatedly.
Use a clean restart to isolate software conflicts
A clean restart loads Windows with minimal drivers and startup programs. It is useful when an update works in a minimal environment but fails during a normal startup, indicating that a background application or service may be interfering.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open System Configuration by searching for
msconfig. - Use the clean-start or selective-startup controls to prevent nonessential startup programs and services from loading. Do not disable Windows services indiscriminately.
- Restart and attempt the update.
- If the update succeeds, return to System Configuration and re-enable startup items and non-Microsoft services in groups, restarting between groups, until the conflicting item is identified.
- Restore the normal startup configuration after testing if no conflict is found.
A clean restart is an isolation test, not a permanent performance setting. If the update still fails in the minimal environment, restore normal startup and continue with disk and escalation checks.

Check the file system and storage health
File-system errors can interfere with servicing operations. Back up important files before disk repair or any reinstall operation.
- Open an elevated Command Prompt.
- Run
chkdsk /f C:. - If Windows says the drive is in use and asks to schedule the check for the next restart, accept the schedule and restart the PC.
- Allow the check to complete before attempting Windows Update again.
chkdsk /f C: repairs file-system errors; it is not a replacement for checking available storage or repairing the Windows component store. If the disk check reports problems that return, preserve the result and seek support before repeated update attempts.
Choose the fix that matches the error’s context
| Where 0x80070032 appears | Most appropriate next action | What to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Windows Update or a failed KB | Get Help troubleshooter, DISM, SFC, cache reset, clean restart, then disk and escalation checks. | Deleting system folders or resetting the PC before backing up. |
| Windows setup or an upgrade | Record the edition, build, exact wording, and setup evidence; use an in-place repair path appropriate to that edition and build if Microsoft support directs it. | Starting a reinstall without confirming whether personal files and apps will be preserved. |
| Microsoft Store or MSIX installation | Investigate package compatibility. In MSIX Core, the code can indicate unsupported package-support-framework functionality; retain the package name and exact message for the publisher or Microsoft support. | Applying a Windows Update cache reset or registry change as though every 0x80070032 error had the same cause. |
| Sign-in or another Windows component | Capture the operation, wording, build, and relevant logs before choosing a repair. The code alone does not identify the failing component. | Assuming the error is an update failure when no KB is involved. |
What to do when the manual sequence does not work
At this point, retain the failed KB, Windows edition and build, the complete wording, and the results of Get Help, DISM, SFC, cache reset, clean restart, and CHKDSK. Also retain relevant Windows Update or setup logs. This evidence lets support distinguish a damaged local installation from an update-specific or package-compatibility problem.

Use an appropriate repair-install path
Microsoft’s in-place repair-install approach can be appropriate when Windows itself needs servicing and ordinary repairs have not solved the failure. The path must match the installed edition and build. Before starting, back up important files and verify whether the selected path preserves personal files and applications; preservation is a property of the specific repair path, not of the error code.
Consider a manual package or Microsoft support
The failed KB and build determine whether obtaining the package manually or using Microsoft’s support channels is appropriate. Do not guess at a replacement package: a package for a different edition, architecture, or build can create a new failure. Provide the recorded evidence when requesting help.
Prepare recovery media only when needed
A USB flash drive can be useful when internal storage is tight or when external installation or recovery media is required. It is an optional task-enabling item, not a guaranteed cure for 0x80070032. Back up data before using recovery or reinstall media, and follow the media requirements for the Windows edition and build involved.
Quick Recap
Actions to avoid
- Do not treat
0x80070032as proof that the PC is infected or that one universal registry edit is required. - Do not delete Windows system folders. For an update-cache reset, stop the Windows Update service and clear only the contents of
C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution. - Do not reset or reinstall Windows before backing up important files and confirming the effect on applications and personal data.
- Do not leave third-party security protection disabled after testing.
- Do not repeat the same cache reset indefinitely when the exact KB and build point to a package or compatibility issue.
