Windows 11 error 0x80070032 means “The request is not supported,” but that message is only a generic Windows status, not a diagnosis. The correct fix depends on where it appears: Windows Update, Microsoft Store, an MSIX/AppX package installer, or an Insider Preview build. Identify that surface first, then use the matching procedure below. Applying a Store or MSIX remedy to Windows Update can waste time, while an Insider repair installation carries risks that are unnecessary for a routine update.

Before changing anything, note the exact screen, the update or package name, your Windows build, and whether the failure happens while downloading or while installing. Press Win+R, enter winver, and record the version and build number. Keep that information if you need to contact Microsoft or the package publisher.

What error 0x80070032 means

Microsoft’s Win32 error table maps hexadecimal code 0x80070032 to ERROR_NOT_SUPPORTED, with the message “The request is not supported.” Windows components reuse this status when a requested operation, option, package feature, or endpoint is not available in the current context. The code therefore does not identify one broken file or one universal repair.

The same number can be emitted by unrelated subsystems. Microsoft documents it in Windows Update troubleshooting, Microsoft Store and package-installation guidance, MSIX Core documentation, and Insider Preview support discussions. Treat the location of the message as the primary clue.

Identify the failing Windows 11 download

Where the message appears What to record Start with
Windows Update in Settings Update name or KB number, whether it is a cumulative update or a feature upgrade, and the Windows build from winver Get Help’s Windows Update troubleshooter, then a restart and another check
Microsoft Store App name, whether Store opens normally, and whether other apps download Store cache reset, registration and endpoint checks, then winget where appropriate
MSIX/AppX installer Package identity, version, installer source, and the exact installation stage Package-specific compatibility checks; MSIX Core may reject unsupported comments or Package Support Framework features
Windows Insider Preview Insider channel, build number, and whether the failure is during a flight update Build-specific Insider guidance; a matching ISO repair install may be suggested in some cases

Also check whether the message says “download” even though the failure occurs during installation. A download that completes before the error points to a different stage than a transfer that stops at a percentage. Do not delete update files or run an installation-media repair until you have established which case you have.

Fix 0x80070032 in Windows Update

1. Run Microsoft’s automated Windows Update troubleshooter

Microsoft says that when an error code appears while downloading or installing Windows updates, the Update Troubleshooter can help resolve it. On current Windows 11 releases, open the Get Help app from Start, search for Windows Update problems, and allow its automated troubleshooter to run. Follow any reset or restart action it recommends.

If Get Help does not resolve the issue or is unavailable, use the Settings troubleshooter:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
  2. Find Windows Update and select Run.
  3. Apply the proposed correction and close the troubleshooter.
  4. Restart the PC, even if Windows does not insist on a restart.
  5. Open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.

Record the result. If the troubleshooter reports that a service, database, or component could not be repaired, move to the cache reset rather than repeatedly clicking Check for updates.

2. Reset the Windows Update download cache

A damaged or incomplete update cache can leave a download in a loop. Microsoft’s troubleshooting procedure is to stop the Windows Update service, clear the contents of the SoftwareDistribution folder, and start the service again. This removes cached update data; Windows will recreate the folder contents when it checks again. It does not remove your personal documents.

  1. Save work and close applications.
  2. Press Win+R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  3. In the Services window, locate Windows Update.
  4. Right-click it and choose Stop. Wait for the status to show that the service has stopped.
  5. Open File Explorer and go to C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution. You may need an administrator approval prompt.
  6. Delete the contents inside that folder, not the parent SoftwareDistribution folder itself. If a file is in use, confirm that Windows Update is stopped and close any pending update or maintenance window before retrying.
  7. Return to Services, right-click Windows Update, and choose Start.
  8. Restart Windows.
  9. Go to Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.

The first check after a cache reset can take longer because Windows has to recreate its local download data. If the same code returns immediately, note whether the failure is at download or installation and continue with the checks below instead of clearing the folder repeatedly.

3. Verify free space before a major upgrade

Insufficient storage can prevent a feature upgrade from staging its files. Microsoft Support’s 2025/2026 guidance lists at least 16 GB free for a 32-bit upgrade or 20 GB free for a 64-bit upgrade. These are minimum free-space figures for the upgrade scenario, not a promise that every device will complete with exactly that amount; Windows may need additional temporary working space.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings > System > Storage and check the available space on the drive containing Windows, normally C:.
  2. Remove or move files you recognize as unnecessary, and empty the Recycle Bin.
  3. Keep enough additional space for applications, restore data, and the rollback files Windows may create during a feature upgrade.
  4. Retry Windows Update after the space check, preferably following a restart.

Do not delete unknown folders under C:Windows or manually remove recovery partitions to make room. If the upgrade still fails, use the exact error and build information when seeking Microsoft support rather than guessing which system files are safe to remove.

4. Check the connection and filtering path

Windows Update must reach Microsoft’s update services. A stable connection is important, and security software, a firewall, or a proxy can block an endpoint even when ordinary web browsing works. Confirm that the PC is not switching repeatedly between networks, that a metered connection is not delaying the update, and that any organization-managed proxy or firewall permits Windows Update traffic.

If this is a work or school computer, do not disable managed security controls yourself. Ask the administrator to check the proxy, firewall, and update policies. On a personal computer, temporarily test from a reliable connection only if doing so is safe and permitted by your security configuration; restore normal protection immediately afterward. A network test is useful only when the error occurs during transfer. It will not fix an MSIX package whose features are unsupported.

5. Retry in a controlled order

After the troubleshooter, cache reset, storage check, and connection check, use this order: restart Windows, open Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, allow the download to finish without repeatedly pausing it, and restart when Windows requests it. If the same update fails during installation, capture the update name and the percentage or stage shown. That evidence distinguishes a download problem from a package or servicing problem.

Fix 0x80070032 in Microsoft Store

1. Confirm that Store itself can work

Open Microsoft Store and check whether it launches, displays your account, and can show an app’s page. Try viewing updates or another small, known app. If every Store operation fails, concentrate on Store registration, endpoint access, cache, and system date or location. If only one app fails, record that app’s name and publisher because the package may have its own compatibility requirement.

2. Reset the Store cache with wsreset.exe

Microsoft Support recommends the Store cache reset utility for launch and download problems:

  1. Press Win+R.
  2. Enter wsreset.exe and press Enter.
  3. A blank Command Prompt window may remain visible for about ten seconds. Do not close it while it is working.
  4. Microsoft Store should open automatically when the reset finishes.
  5. Sign in if requested, open the app again, and retry the download.

The command clears Store’s local cache; it does not reinstall Windows or erase your personal files. If the Store does not open after the window closes, restart Windows and test Store again before attempting package installation from another source.

3. Verify Store registration and required endpoints

Microsoft Learn’s Store-download checklist calls for verifying that Microsoft Store is registered for the current user and that it can launch and download updates. It also calls for checking the firewall and proxy endpoints required by Store. On a managed device, an administrator may have intentionally restricted Store access; changing local settings will not override that policy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check that Windows is up to date, and verify the system’s time and location settings. Incorrect time can interfere with account authentication and endpoint certificates, while an incorrect region can make an app unavailable or route the request differently. Correct those settings, restart Store, and test again.

4. Use WinGet when the app is available there

For a package that is listed in the Windows package manager, Microsoft’s guidance provides this path:

  1. Open Windows Terminal or Command Prompt.
  2. Search by the app’s name: winget search <App name>.
  3. Review the search results carefully and identify the correct publisher and package.
  4. Install the selected package with winget install <App name>, following any source or agreement prompts.

Use the exact package identity shown by the search results when multiple similarly named apps appear. WinGet is an alternative installation route, not proof that the Store account or endpoint problem has been repaired. If the package is not listed or the publisher requires Store licensing, continue with Store-specific support.

Fix an MSIX or AppX package that reports 0x80070032

MSIX Core gives this code a more specific interpretation: the package can contain comments that MSIX Core does not support, including unsupported Package Support Framework functionality. In that situation, deleting the Windows Update cache or resetting Microsoft Store addresses the wrong layer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the package and runtime combination

  1. Record the package name, version, architecture, installer source, and the Windows edition and build from winver.
  2. Confirm whether the package is intended for the runtime on this PC, or whether it requires MSIX Core rather than the native Windows 11 app installer.
  3. Ask the publisher for a build that omits unsupported comments or Package Support Framework features, or use an installer explicitly compatible with the target runtime.
  4. Remove a partial copy only through the publisher’s documented uninstall or deployment process. Do not delete arbitrary folders under Program FilesWindowsApps.
  5. Retry with the compatible package after confirming that the package source is trusted.

If the error appears only for one package while Windows Update and other Store apps work, that pattern supports a package-compatibility diagnosis. If every package fails, return to the Store registration, endpoint, and system-setting checks instead of assuming every package is malformed.

Fix an Insider Preview update failure

Insider builds can have build-specific servicing issues. A Microsoft Q&A case involving Insider Preview build 10.0.26120.1330 records 0x80070032 and suggests downloading the matching Insider ISO and running a repair installation while checking the selected Insider channel. That is a case-specific community response, not a universal remedy for Windows 11.

Before considering an ISO repair

  • Confirm the exact build and Insider channel in Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program.
  • Back up important files to a separate location. A repair install is less destructive than a clean installation, but any installation-media operation carries data and rollback risk.
  • Use installation media that matches the installed edition, language, architecture, and build family as closely as possible.
  • Read the current Insider instructions for that build and verify that the ISO is from Microsoft’s official distribution.
  • Keep the device connected to power and do not interrupt setup once it begins.

When not to use the Insider ISO suggestion

Do not download an Insider ISO merely because a normal Windows Update failed. If the message appears in Microsoft Store or an MSIX installer, an ISO repair targets the wrong component. Even for an Insider device, first confirm the channel and build; the Q&A recommendation applies to the recorded case and does not establish that every 0x80070032 failure needs repair media.

Choose the next step by risk and scope

Step Scope Invasiveness Data risk Use it when
Get Help or Settings troubleshooter Windows Update diagnostics Low Low The code appears in Windows Update and you have not run Microsoft’s automated checks
Restart and check again Transient service or pending-reboot state Low Low A troubleshooter changed a service or Windows reports a restart is needed
Clear SoftwareDistribution contents Windows Update cache Moderate Low for personal files; cached update data is removed Download data is stuck or repeatedly fails after the basic troubleshooter
wsreset.exe Microsoft Store cache Low Low Store will not launch correctly or its downloads fail
WinGet installation Individual Store-available package Low Low The app is listed by winget search and its publisher and identity are clear
Compatible MSIX package One package/runtime combination Moderate Depends on the publisher’s installer MSIX Core reports unsupported comments or Package Support Framework behavior
Matching Insider ISO repair Insider build servicing High Back up first; installation media and rollback are involved Build-specific Insider guidance points to that exact repair path

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming the code identifies one fault: 0x80070032 is reused, so a generic “fix” cannot be trusted without locating the message.
  • Deleting the wrong folder: clear only the contents of C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution after stopping Windows Update. Do not remove unrelated Windows directories.
  • Using an ISO as a first resort: repair media is disproportionate for a routine Store cache problem and can create avoidable data and rollback risk.
  • Ignoring the installation stage: a transfer failure points toward network, endpoint, storage, or cache checks; an installation failure may indicate package or servicing compatibility.
  • Installing a similarly named package: when using WinGet, verify the publisher and package identity before accepting the install.
  • Disabling security controls permanently: firewall or proxy testing should be limited, controlled, and reversed; managed devices require administrator approval.
  • Repeating one failed action indefinitely: if the troubleshooter and cache reset do not change the result, collect the build, package, stage, and exact screen text and escalate with that information.

What to record if the error persists

Make a concise record before contacting Microsoft, an administrator, or the app publisher:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The exact hexadecimal code and message.
  • The surface: Windows Update, Microsoft Store, MSIX/AppX, or Insider Preview.
  • Windows edition, version, and build from winver.
  • Update KB number, feature-upgrade name, app name, or package identity.
  • Whether the failure occurred during download, verification, or installation, including any percentage shown.
  • Available space on the Windows drive and whether the device is 32-bit or 64-bit for an upgrade.
  • Which documented steps were completed and what changed afterward.

This record prevents a support technician from repeating unrelated Store, cache, and ISO procedures and makes it easier to match the problem to build-specific guidance.
