Windows 10 update error 0x80070057 means an update failed to install. Windows also describes this code as “The parameter is incorrect.” It is a symptom, not a diagnosis: damaged update files, a corrupted component store, incorrect settings, insufficient storage, or a temporary network or VPN conflict can all lead to it.
Use the repairs in this order: run the Windows Update troubleshooter, check storage and connectivity, repair the Windows image with DISM, repair protected system files with SFC, and only then move to official installation media. These steps are designed to repair Windows Update without immediately reinstalling Windows. Remember, however, that Microsoft ended free Windows 10 updates, technical assistance and security fixes after October 14, 2025; fixing the update mechanism in 2026 does not restore free post-support servicing.

What error 0x80070057 means
Code 0x80070057 appears when Windows 10 cannot complete an update installation. Microsoft’s update guidance groups it with corrupted files and incorrect system configurations, while its upgrade guidance labels it “The parameter is incorrect.” Those descriptions explain why one universal fix does not exist. The same code can be produced by different problems on different computers.
The code does not, by itself, identify a particular update, prove that Windows is infected, or mean that a clean installation is required. Start with diagnostics that leave your apps and files alone, then escalate only if the built-in repair path cannot restore updating.

Prepare before changing Windows
Do these checks before running repair commands. They prevent an avoidable interruption and help you decide whether the problem is Windows Update itself or a practical blocker.
- Back up important files. Copy documents, photos, browser data and other irreplaceable files to external storage or a trusted backup service before using installation media. The built-in troubleshooter, DISM and SFC are non-destructive in normal use, but an in-place repair or reinstall is a larger change.
- Sign in with an administrator account. DISM and SFC require an elevated Command Prompt.
- Check free storage. Windows needs room to download, unpack and stage an update. Microsoft notes that a device with a small hard drive may need a USB drive to update. Remove or move files only after confirming that the backup is usable.
- Temporarily disconnect a VPN. A VPN can interfere with update downloads or validation. Disconnect it for the test, then reconnect it after Windows Update has finished.
- Restart once. A pending reboot can leave update services in an incomplete state. Restart Windows normally before beginning the numbered repairs.
Step 1: Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
The troubleshooter is the least invasive repair and should be your first action.
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Choose Update & Security.
- Select Troubleshoot, then Additional troubleshooters.
- Choose Windows Update and select Run the troubleshooter.
- Follow each suggested action, allow the diagnostic checks to complete, and restart if Windows requests it.
- Return to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
On some Windows 10 installations, Microsoft’s newer Get Help experience opens instead of the older troubleshooter window. Let that automated flow run; it performs the same kind of common Windows Update diagnosis and attempted fixes. If it reports that it could not resolve the issue, continue to the next step rather than repeatedly running it.
Step 2: Remove practical blockers
If the troubleshooter does not clear 0x80070057, check the conditions that can stop an otherwise healthy update.
Free enough storage for the update
Open Settings > System > Storage and review the space available on the drive where Windows is installed. Windows does not publish one universal free-space figure for every update, so do not rely on a single number. If the drive is nearly full, empty the Recycle Bin, remove files you have already backed up, or move large personal files to external storage. A USB drive can be useful when the internal drive is too small for the update or for the installation media used later.
Test without a VPN and with a stable connection
Disconnect the VPN, connect through a reliable network, and retry the update. Avoid switching networks while Windows is downloading or installing. If the update succeeds with the VPN disconnected, reconnect it after the restart and investigate the VPN configuration separately.
Restart and retry once
After the storage and network checks, restart the computer again. Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, select Check for updates, and allow the installation to reach a definite result. If 0x80070057 returns, proceed to image and system-file repair.
Step 3: Repair the Windows image with DISM
DISM (Deployment Image Servicing and Management) repairs the Windows component store, the source from which protected system files and updates are assembled. Component-store corruption is a documented reason to use the /RestoreHealth option, and Microsoft notes that DISM may obtain repair files through Windows Update.
- Open Start and type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- At the elevated prompt, enter exactly:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth - Press Enter and wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window or power off the computer while it is working.
- When the command completes, close Command Prompt and restart Windows.
Because RestoreHealth can use Windows Update as a repair source, it may fail when the update service or its downloaded files are themselves damaged. A failure at this stage is a reason to continue to SFC and, if necessary, use official installation media rather than repeatedly issuing the same command.
Rank #2
- NOTE: This USB flash drive does not include a Windows key, you must have a Windows key to activate Windows, but you can still clean install or reinstall Windows 7.
- Latest Version: Deployed with the latest official original version of Windows 7 (SP1), no viruses, no spyware, 100% clean.
- Professional: Using professional Windows 7 production tool to ensure product quality.
- Compatibility: Compatible with all PC brands, laptop or desktop, 64-bit/32-bit, Dell, HP, Sony, Lenovo, Samsung, Acer, Toshiba and more.
- Plug & Play: Includes user guide and online technical support services. Plug it in and you are ready to go.
Step 4: Repair protected system files with SFC
Run System File Checker after DISM. DISM repairs the image that supplies system files; SFC then checks the protected files currently installed in Windows and repairs versions that are missing or corrupted.
- Open an elevated Command Prompt again: Start > type Command Prompt > right-click it > Run as administrator.
- Enter:
sfc /scannow - Press Enter and let the scan reach completion. Keep the Command Prompt window open until it reports that the verification is finished.
- Restart the computer.
- Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
Do not reverse the order unless a specific support instruction tells you to. Running DISM before SFC gives SFC a repaired component source when the component store was the underlying problem.
Step 5: Decide whether the repair worked
A successful repair has a practical result: Windows Update downloads and installs the pending update without returning 0x80070057. If the same code appears again after the restart, note whether it fails during download, installation or the final reboot. That timing helps you avoid repeating a step that has already completed successfully.
- It installs normally: Restart once more if Windows requests it, then check Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update for any remaining pending updates.
- The troubleshooter, DISM and SFC all complete but the update still fails: Move to official Windows installation or upgrade media. The remaining problem may be deeper component damage or a configuration that the automated repairs cannot replace.
- DISM or SFC cannot complete: Record the on-screen result, restart, and use installation media as the next escalation. Do not interrupt a scan by shutting down the PC.
Step 6: Escalate with official Windows installation media
Installation or upgrade media can repair Windows when the installed component store and update files cannot repair one another. It is also the fallback when the built-in tools repeatedly finish without changing the error.
Choose the least destructive option first
An in-place repair starts Windows Setup from the official installation or upgrade media while Windows is running. Setup may offer an option to keep personal files and apps; read the choices carefully and select the keep option only when it is explicitly shown and matches your goal. A reinstall is a more drastic alternative and can remove apps, settings or personal data depending on the option selected. Back up first either way.
Match the media to this installation
The media must match the Windows installation’s edition, language and architecture. A mismatch can prevent Setup from offering the repair path or can force an unwanted installation choice. Check those details in Settings > System > About before creating or obtaining media. If the affected PC cannot create the media, a second working computer may be needed, along with a USB drive large enough for the official installation files.
Prepare the USB and the computer
- Use official Windows installation or upgrade media, not an altered image from an unknown source.
- Back up files and make sure you can sign in to important accounts after the repair.
- Disconnect unnecessary external devices so Setup has fewer hardware variables to detect.
- Keep the computer connected to reliable power during the repair; do not force a shutdown while Setup is working.
Compare the two escalation paths
| Criterion | Built-in troubleshooting and repair | Official installation media |
|---|---|---|
| Primary purpose | Diagnoses Windows Update, repairs the component store and replaces protected system files. | Repairs or reinstalls Windows when the installed update components cannot recover themselves. |
| Reversibility | Diagnostics first; the troubleshooter, DISM and SFC are the least disruptive choices. | More consequential; an in-place repair may keep apps and files when Setup offers that option, while a reinstall can remove them. |
| Storage requirement | Needs adequate free space on the Windows drive for downloads and servicing. | Needs working installation media and, commonly, a USB drive; a small internal drive may still require external storage. |
| Other equipment | Can be performed on the affected PC with an administrator account. | If the affected PC cannot create media, a second working computer may be needed to prepare the USB drive. |
| Compatibility checks | Uses the existing Windows installation. | Edition, language and architecture must match the installed Windows 10 system. |
What not to conclude from 0x80070057
The wording “The parameter is incorrect” can sound like a single mis-typed setting, but Microsoft uses the code for multiple update and upgrade conditions. Do not assume that changing one registry value, deleting random system folders or repeatedly rebooting will address the cause. The supported sequence is the troubleshooter, practical storage and network checks, DISM RestoreHealth, SFC, and then matched installation media.
Likewise, a successful repair does not mean that Windows 10 has returned to normal long-term support. Microsoft’s stated deadline was October 14, 2025: after that date it no longer provides free software updates from Windows Update, technical assistance or security fixes for Windows 10. Repairing 0x80070057 can make the update mechanism function again, but it cannot extend that support policy.
