If Windows 10 shows 0X0070057, first verify the characters in Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > View update history. Microsoft documents 0x80070057, not the exact 0X0070057 string. The documented code is associated with corrupted files or incorrect system configurations.

Back up your personal files, then work through the repairs in order: run the Windows Update troubleshooter, restart and check again, reset the update cache, and repair the Windows image and protected system files with DISM and SFC. The first steps are low-risk; the later repairs make deeper system changes.

What the code means and why the spelling matters

Error codes are exact identifiers. A missing or extra character can point to a different problem, so do not paste commands meant for 0x80070057 until you have confirmed the code shown by Windows.

Confirm the recorded error

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Update & Security > Windows Update.
  3. Choose View update history.
  4. Open the failed update entry and copy the complete error code, including the leading zero and the letter x.

If the history shows 0x80070057, the procedure below applies. If it shows another code, use that exact code when looking up Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance; do not assume every Windows Update failure has the same cause.

Before changing Windows Update

Back up personal files

Copy documents, photos, browser exports and other irreplaceable files to another location before resetting update components or repairing the system image. A USB flash drive 64GB is a practical phrase to use when shopping for optional physical backup media, but the drive is only for backup or temporary storage; it does not repair the update error.

  • Use a drive with enough free capacity for the files you actually need to protect.
  • Open several copied files from the backup to confirm that the copy completed.
  • If the computer has little free space, remove only files you have verified elsewhere; do not delete Windows folders manually.

Check the prerequisites

  • Sign in to an account with administrator rights. The cache-reset and repair commands require an elevated Command Prompt.
  • Connect the computer to reliable power, especially on a laptop.
  • Keep enough free storage for the update and temporary repair files. Microsoft identifies insufficient storage as a possible update obstacle.
  • Note any third-party antivirus or security software installed. It can interfere with Windows Update; disabling or removing it should be a temporary, deliberate step only when you know how to restore protection.

Repair 1: Run the Windows Update troubleshooter

The built-in troubleshooter is the least disruptive option and should be tried first.

  1. Open Start > Settings > Update & Security.
  2. Select Troubleshoot, then Additional troubleshooters.
  3. Choose Windows Update and select Run the troubleshooter.
  4. Allow Windows to inspect and apply any proposed correction.
  5. Restart the PC when prompted, even if the troubleshooter reports that no change was needed.
  6. After signing in again, return to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and select Check for updates.

If the update installs, check View update history to confirm the failure is no longer being recorded. If 0x80070057 returns, continue to the cache reset rather than repeatedly rerunning the troubleshooter.

Repair 2: Reset the Windows Update cache

Windows stores downloaded update data and catalog information in update components. Renaming the two component folders lets Windows create fresh folders without deleting the originals. This is more invasive than the troubleshooter but is reversible: the renamed folders remain on the drive until you remove them.

Run the reset commands

  1. Open Start, type Command Prompt, right-click it and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  2. Run each command separately, waiting for the command prompt to return before entering the next one:
net stop bits
net stop wuauserv
ren %systemroot%softwaredistribution softwaredistribution.bak
ren %systemroot%system32catroot2 catroot2.bak
net start bits
net start wuauserv
  1. Close Command Prompt and restart Windows.
  2. Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and select Check for updates.

What to do if a command reports an error

  • “The service has not been started”: continue if you are stopping that service; it is already stopped.
  • “Access is denied”: close the window, reopen Command Prompt with Run as administrator, and retry.
  • “The system cannot find the file specified” on a rename command: check that the command was typed exactly, including the percent signs and backslashes. Do not invent a different folder name.
  • The .bak name already exists: do not overwrite it. A previous reset may have left the backup folder in place; seek administrator help before deleting or renaming folders.

Do not delete the renamed folders while troubleshooting. They are useful rollback points and can contain cached data that may be needed to diagnose a different failure.

Repair 3: Repair the Windows image and system files

If the cache reset does not help, repair the component store and protected system files. Microsoft’s sequence is DISM first, followed by System File Checker. DISM repairs the Windows image that supplies system components; SFC then checks protected files against that repaired image.

  1. Open Command Prompt as administrator again.
  2. Run the DISM command and wait for it to finish:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  1. When DISM has completed, run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart the PC after SFC finishes.
  2. Return to Windows Update and select Check for updates.

Do not close the Command Prompt merely because the percentage appears to pause. Let each command report completion or an error before starting the next one. If either command reports that it could not complete, record the exact message; repeating the same command without addressing that message is unlikely to add information.

Check common blockers before trying again

Third-party security software

Security suites can block update services or file replacement. If the error began after installing or changing security software, consult that product’s documented procedure for temporarily disabling its update-interference features. Only do this when you understand how to turn protection back on, and restore it immediately after testing Windows Update. Windows Update repair does not replace antivirus protection.

Available storage

Open Settings > System > Storage and review the system drive. Windows needs room for the downloaded package, temporary files and rollback data. Move personal files to your verified backup or another disk rather than deleting unknown files from C:Windows or C:Program Files.

Restart state

A pending restart can leave an update transaction incomplete. After the troubleshooter, cache reset, or DISM/SFC repair, use Start > Power > Restart, not just sleep or closing the lid, before checking again.

Choose the next step by risk and reversibility

Option What it changes Relative risk When to use it
Windows Update troubleshooter Applies built-in diagnostic corrections Lowest; normally reversible First attempt for a confirmed 0x80070057 failure
Update-cache reset Stops update services and renames SoftwareDistribution and catroot2 Moderate; renamed folders provide a rollback point When the troubleshooter and restart do not clear the error
DISM and SFC Repairs the component store and protected Windows files Deeper system repair When cache reset fails or corruption is suspected
Reinstallation or operating-system migration Replaces or moves the Windows installation Highest disruption; backup is essential Only after repair attempts fail and you have planned recovery

The table is a decision aid, not a requirement to skip steps. Running a deeper repair first can make diagnosis harder, while repeating a low-risk step that has already failed rarely changes the result.

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025

Microsoft states: “Support for Windows 10 has ended on October 14, 2025.” That date marks the end of Microsoft’s free Windows 10 software updates, technical assistance and security fixes. A successful repair of 0x80070057 does not extend that support lifecycle.

If the computer meets the requirements for Windows 11, migration is the longer-term path Microsoft recommends. Check compatibility and back up before changing operating systems. If you must remain on Windows 10, understand that the absence of free security fixes after the stated date is a separate risk from the immediate update error.

When to stop troubleshooting and seek recovery help

Stop and obtain qualified help if the PC cannot boot normally, repeatedly restarts during repair, loses access to personal files, or reports storage errors. Do not keep renaming system folders or deleting update data when the disk itself may be failing.

For a normal desktop that still starts, gather the following before contacting support:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The exact code copied from View update history.
  • The update name or knowledge-base number shown in the history.
  • The date and time of the failed attempt.
  • The complete DISM or SFC result, if you ran those commands.
  • Whether the troubleshooter, cache reset and restart changed the behavior.
  • The amount of free space on the system drive and whether third-party security software was active.

Those details distinguish a transcription error from a repeatable 0x80070057 failure and prevent destructive trial-and-error repairs.

Quick checklist

  1. Confirm whether the code is really 0x80070057.
  2. Back up personal files; optional USB media is for backup, not repair.
  3. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter and restart.
  4. Check for updates again.
  5. If the error returns, stop BITS and Windows Update, rename the two cache folders, restart the services, reboot and retry.
  6. Run DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth, then sfc /scannow in an elevated Command Prompt.
  7. Check storage and security-software interference.
  8. If repair still fails, preserve the exact logs and plan recovery or a supported operating-system migration rather than deleting system files.

As an optional shortcut after trying the manual steps, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements and shared DLL problems, while offering settings tweaks, temporary-file cleanup, privacy and vulnerability checks, a real-time boost, file shredding and an app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7; a category-based free trial lasts at least two days before a paid subscription, and it complements rather than replaces antivirus protection. Results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.
