It is not tied to one universal cause: the correct fix depends on whether you are restoring a restore point or a system image, whether Windows starts normally, and when the operation fails. Protect your files, retry System Restore with another point, then use Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE), update removal, or a reset/reinstall only as progressively more disruptive fallbacks.
What error 0x80070057 means during recovery
The hexadecimal code is a parameter-related Windows error. In recovery work, it indicates that a value, setting, or piece of recovery information was not accepted. The code alone does not identify one failed component or guarantee one fix for every computer.

Windows 10 uses similar recovery screens for different jobs. A restore point rolls system configuration back to an earlier snapshot. A system-image restore applies a broader captured image. The same code can therefore appear in different workflows, and the screen where it appears is an important diagnostic clue.
Note whether the error occurs before you can select a point or image, while files are being applied, or after the restart that completes recovery. That timing helps you choose the least disruptive next step instead of repeatedly using the same failed operation.

Protect your files before changing recovery options
Copy important documents, photos, browser exports, password-manager data, and other irreplaceable files to an external drive or cloud storage before continuing. Microsoft’s recovery guidance recommends a backup because later choices such as Reset this PC or a reinstall can remove applications and, depending on the option selected, personal data.
System Restore is designed to leave personal files alone, but it changes system state and is not a substitute for a file backup. Keep the computer connected to reliable power, disconnect nonessential storage, and make sure you know which drive contains the backup before starting a reset or image operation.
Identify the recovery operation you are using
| Operation | Typical entry point | What changes | Relative risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| System Restore from a restore point | Control Panel > Recovery > Open System Restore, or rstrui.exe |
System files, registry settings, installed programs, drivers, and settings return to the selected point; personal files normally remain. | Usually the least disruptive recovery choice. |
| System Restore in WinRE | Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore | The same restore-point process, launched outside the normal Windows session. | Useful when Windows will not start; still normally preserves personal files. |
| System-image recovery | WinRE or installation media recovery tools | A captured system image is applied to a broader part of the installation. | More disruptive; verify the image and backup before proceeding. |
| Reset this PC or reinstall | WinRE recovery choices or Windows installation media | Applications are removed, and personal data may also be removed depending on the selected option. | Reserve for when less invasive recovery fails. |
Retry System Restore from a working Windows 10 session
If you can sign in, try the built-in restore-point workflow first. It is reversible compared with a reset or reinstall and gives you useful information about which point is failing.
- Open Control Panel, select Recovery, and choose Open System Restore. You can also press Win+R, enter
rstrui.exe, and press Enter. - At the System Restore wizard, select Next to display available restore points.
- Choose a point created before the problem began. Select Scan for affected programs if the option is shown; this identifies programs and drivers that Windows expects to remove or restore.
- Select Next, review the point, then select Finish. Do not interrupt the restart once the operation begins.
- After Windows starts again, check whether the original symptom is gone. If the same
0x80070057message appears, record exactly when it appeared and continue with a different point rather than repeating the identical one.
Try an earlier restore point
A restore point can itself be incomplete or unsuitable for the current system state. Return to the wizard and select an earlier point, preferably one created before the first failed update, driver installation, or settings change. Run Scan for affected programs again so you understand the trade-off before confirming.

If every available point fails at the same stage, stop cycling through points. That pattern suggests you should change the recovery environment or operation instead of treating the code as a typo in one selected date.
Use Windows Recovery Environment when Windows will not start
When normal startup is unavailable, launch WinRE from the recovery screen. If the automatic recovery screen does not appear, Microsoft documents reaching repair tools with Windows installation media or a recovery drive created on another working computer.
- At the WinRE menu, select Troubleshoot.
- Choose Advanced options, then System Restore.
- Select the Windows installation if prompted, authenticate with an administrator account, and choose a restore point.
- Run the restore and let the computer restart without powering it off.
- If that point fails, return to the same menu and try an earlier point. Record whether the error happened while the point was being selected, during file application, or after the restart.
WinRE is especially useful when a damaged startup session prevents rstrui.exe from running. It does not make a bad restore point valid, so switching to WinRE is a change of environment, not proof that the underlying cause has been removed.

- Choose the available update-removal option and follow the on-screen instructions.
- Restart Windows and test the computer. If the system still cannot start or System Restore still fails, return to WinRE and continue with the remaining recovery choices.
Update removal is a targeted response to a problem with a clear update-related timeline. It is not a general replacement for System Restore and may not address an error that occurs only during a system-image operation.
When the error appears during a system-image restore
Microsoft documents 0x80070057 in a Windows 10 system-image-restore report. A system image is different from a restore point: it represents a broader captured system state and can affect more of the installation when applied.
- Enter WinRE from the installed recovery tools or Windows installation media.
- Select Troubleshoot and open the system-image recovery option shown by your media or recovery environment.
- Confirm that the backup storage containing the image is connected and available before selecting it.
- Review the target and the expected data impact. Because image recovery is broader than a restore point, do not proceed until important current files are backed up elsewhere.
- If the image operation returns
0x80070057, note whether it failed while locating the image, while applying it, or after restarting. Retry only when you have verified the image and target; otherwise move to another recovery path.
The error code by itself does not establish that the image is corrupt, that a particular disk is defective, or that one setting is wrong. Treat the workflow and failure stage as clues rather than a diagnosis.

- Try another restore point. This is the smallest change and can bypass a failed point.
- Use WinRE System Restore. This removes dependence on a working Windows desktop.
- Uninstall a recent update. Use this when the timeline points to an update.
- Use a manufacturer recovery environment or media. It may include device-specific drivers and factory applications that generic Windows media does not.
- Reset this PC. Read each choice carefully: applications are removed, and the selected reset mode determines whether personal files are retained or deleted.
- Reinstall Windows from installation media. This is the most disruptive route and requires a current backup.
Create Windows 10 installation media if a reinstall is necessary
Microsoft’s documented fallback is to use another working PC to download Windows and create bootable USB installation media. A USB flash drive is therefore an enabler for the reinstall process, not a repair for 0x80070057 by itself.
- On a working computer, obtain the official Windows 10 installation-media creation tool or ISO from Microsoft.
- Use the tool to create bootable media on a USB flash drive.
- Insert the media into the affected PC and start it from that device using the computer’s boot-selection method.
- Choose the repair options first if you want to return to WinRE tools. Select installation only after you have decided that a reinstall is necessary and your backup is complete.
- Follow the setup prompts and be aware that a generic installation may not include the manufacturer’s factory applications or device-specific drivers. Manufacturer recovery media can provide those extras.
Use the failure stage to choose your next test
| Where it fails | What it tells you | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Before restore points or images are listed | The recovery environment may not be reading the expected recovery data, or the selected workflow may not match the backup type. | Confirm whether you are using a restore point or image, then retry from WinRE or the correct media. |
| While applying files | The selected point or image may not be usable for this installation; the code does not identify the exact reason. | Try an earlier restore point. For an image, verify the backup storage and target before another attempt. |
| After the restart | The restored configuration may conflict with a recent update or another startup change. | Use WinRE and consider Uninstall Updates when the timeline supports it. |
| Only in the normal desktop | The installed Windows session may be the limiting factor rather than the restore point itself. | Run System Restore from WinRE or installation media. |
What System Restore changes—and what it does not
Microsoft describes a restore point as a snapshot of system configuration. Applying it reverts system files, registry settings, installed programs, drivers, and Windows settings to the selected time. Personal files are normally not affected.
That boundary matters: System Restore can undo a driver installation or software change, but it is not a file-history system and cannot replace a backup. A system-image restore has a broader scope, while Reset this PC and a reinstall can remove applications and may remove personal data according to the option selected.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming the code is a typing error. “Parameter incorrect” is a generic status; changing a date or repeating the same point does not necessarily solve it.
- Confusing a restore point with a system image. They are different recovery sources with different data impact.
- Skipping the backup. The first restore attempt may preserve personal files, but later recovery choices may not.
- Forcing a shutdown during recovery. Interrupting file application can leave Windows in a less usable state.
- Resetting too early. Try another point, WinRE, and a time-appropriate update removal first.
- Assuming generic installation media is identical to factory media. Manufacturer media may contain device-specific drivers and applications that a generic USB does not.
When to stop troubleshooting and reinstall
Move to Reset this PC or a reinstall when no restore point works, WinRE cannot complete recovery, and update removal does not address the startup problem. Before selecting either option, verify that your backup opens on another device and that you have access to any installation files, licenses, or recovery media you will need afterward.
Choose the least destructive reset option that meets your goal, read the data-retention warning on the screen, and understand that a clean reinstall removes the existing Windows installation. If the computer came with manufacturer recovery media, consider it when preserving factory drivers and applications matters more than using a generic Windows image.
