Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIf Windows 10 Search opens but ignores every key, first test the keyboard in Notepad or a browser. Typing that works elsewhere points to Windows Search, Explorer, or the text-input service; typing that fails in every app points to the keyboard, connection, battery, driver, or computer. For a Search-only failure, restart Windows Explorer and Windows Search, run Search and Indexing troubleshooting, install pending updates, launch C:Windowssystem32ctfmon.exe, and only then reset Windows Search using the procedure for your Windows 10 version.
Start by separating a Search problem from a keyboard problem
The symptom “I can click Search, but no characters appear” has two very different causes. A Windows component may be refusing text input while the keyboard itself is healthy, or the keyboard may not be sending keystrokes at all. Do this short test before changing Windows settings.

Test a second application
- Open Notepad from the Start menu and type a sentence.
- If Notepad is unavailable, click the address bar in a browser and type a web address or a few words.
- Try both ordinary letters and a key such as Backspace.
If typing works in Notepad or the browser, leave hardware troubleshooting aside for now and follow the Windows Search sequence below. If typing fails in every application, Search is probably only where you noticed the problem; use the hardware and driver checks in the next section.
Test the keyboard on another computer
For a keyboard that fails in all applications, disconnect and reconnect it, try a different USB port, and check the batteries if it is wireless. A wireless receiver should be firmly connected and not hidden behind a source of interference. Test the same keyboard on another PC. Microsoft’s keyboard guidance says that a device that also fails on another computer should be replaced. Do not buy replacement hardware as a first step when typing already works in Notepad: that pattern identifies a Windows UI problem, not a dead keyboard.

- EASY SETUP: Experience simple installation with the USB wired connection
- VERSATILE COMPATIBILITY: This keyboard is designed to work with multiple Windows versions, including Vista, 7, 8, 10 offering broad compatibility across devices.

- FULL-SIZED CONVENIENCE: The standard QWERTY layout of this keyboard set offers a familiar typing experience, ideal for both professional tasks and personal use.
Check the connection, power and driver
- For a wired model, inspect the cable and plug, then test a port directly on the PC rather than a hub.
- For a wireless model, replace or recharge batteries, turn the keyboard off and on, and reconnect its receiver or Bluetooth pairing.
- If the keyboard works intermittently, test it while another USB device is disconnected.
- Use Device Manager to inspect the keyboard entry for a driver warning, then restart Windows after any driver update or rollback.
If the keyboard works on another computer but not this one, the fault is local to Windows, the USB/Bluetooth stack, or the PC’s hardware. Continue with the Search-specific steps rather than replacing a working keyboard.
Restart the two Windows components that Search depends on
Explorer owns much of the Start menu interface, while the Windows Search service supplies search functions in the background. Restarting them is reversible and should come before deleting packages, changing the registry, or resetting Search.
Restart Windows Explorer
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Escto open Task Manager. - If Task Manager is in its compact view, select More details.
- On the Processes tab, find Windows Explorer.
- Right-click it and choose Restart. The taskbar and open File Explorer windows may disappear briefly and then return.
After Explorer returns, open Search and try typing again. Save work first because Explorer’s restart refreshes the Windows shell.
Restart Windows Search
- Press
Win+R, enterservices.msc, and press Enter. - Find Windows Search in the list.
- Right-click it and choose Restart. If Restart is unavailable, choose Stop, wait a few seconds, then choose Start.
- Open Start Search and test the keyboard.
Microsoft also documents ending SearchUI.exe in Task Manager. Windows Search starts it again the next time a search is performed. Use that option only if the Search process is visibly stuck; restarting the service is the less disruptive first choice. Restart Windows if either component does not recover cleanly.

Run Search and Indexing troubleshooting
Windows 10 includes a diagnostic path for Search problems. The documented command is:
msdt.exe -ep WindowsHelp id SearchDiagnostic
Open the troubleshooter from Settings
- Select Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot.
- Choose Additional troubleshooters if that page is shown.
- Select Search and Indexing, choose the symptom that best matches the failure, and let Windows apply its suggested repair.
- Close and reopen Search, then test typing.
The exact list of troubleshooters can differ by Windows 10 build. Microsoft says Windows 10 version 1903 and later can automatically run a Search troubleshooter when a problem is detected. Its reset returns Search to the default experience; it does not replace your personal files.
What the diagnostic result means
- A repair that reports a Search or indexing fault supports the Search-only diagnosis; test the box again before escalating.
- A result that finds nothing does not prove the keyboard is defective. Continue to the service, update, and text-input steps when typing still works in other apps.
- If the command does not open the diagnostic window, use the Settings path and install updates before trying a reset.
Install Windows updates and refresh the font cache service
Search fixes are delivered through Windows servicing, so check for updates before using a reset script.
- Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all offered updates, including a restart if Windows requests one.
- After the restart, test Search in a fresh Start menu session.
Microsoft also lists restarting Windows Font Cache Service as a possible Search repair. To try it, open services.msc, locate Windows Font Cache Service, stop it, wait briefly, and start it again. If Windows will not let you stop the service, skip this optional step and continue; do not disable it permanently.

Repair Windows text input with ctfmon.exe
When typing fails in Windows UI fields but works in ordinary desktop applications, the language and text-input subsystem is a strong suspect. Microsoft Q&A guidance dated 2024-12-05 recommends launching the Windows text-input process directly.
- Press
Win+R. - Enter
C:Windowssystem32ctfmon.exeexactly. - Press Enter, wait a few seconds, and click the Search box again.
This can restore the language bar and fix Search typing, but it is a targeted repair rather than a universal guarantee. If the command works only until the next sign-in, continue with Windows updates and the version-specific Search reset instead of repeatedly launching it.
Reset Windows Search according to your Windows 10 version
Use a reset only after the reversible steps above. Microsoft’s procedure differs between Windows 10 version 1903 and later and version 1809 or earlier. To identify the installed release, press Win+R, enter winver, and note the version shown.

Microsoft provides a PowerShell script named ResetWindowsSearchBox.ps1 for these releases. The script resets the Search experience rather than deleting personal documents. Administrator permissions are required, and Microsoft notes that you may need to change PowerShell’s execution policy temporarily.

- Obtain the current
ResetWindowsSearchBox.ps1script from Microsoft’s “Fix problems in Windows Search” instructions. - Open PowerShell as an administrator. Use the Start menu, search for PowerShell, right-click it, and select Run as administrator.
- Record the existing execution-policy value before changing anything. A process-scoped bypass is preferable to changing the policy for every user.
- If Windows blocks the script, temporarily allow scripts in the elevated PowerShell session, run
ResetWindowsSearchBox.ps1from the folder where you saved it, and follow its prompts. - Close PowerShell when the reset finishes and restore the prior execution-policy setting. Restart Windows, then test Search.
Resetting Windows Search does not affect your files, but Microsoft warns that result relevance may be temporarily reduced while the index and Search experience rebuild. Allow time for normal indexing before judging result quality. If the script reports an access or policy error, verify that PowerShell is elevated and that you restored or changed the policy only for the intended session.
Windows 10 version 1809 and earlier: reset Cortana from its app settings
Older Windows 10 releases use a different Search implementation. Microsoft’s version-specific instructions describe resetting Cortana from its app settings rather than using the newer PowerShell script. Follow the Cortana reset path for the installed release; do not apply a 1903-and-later script blindly to an earlier build.
After the Cortana reset, restart Windows and test typing in Start Search. A reset can repair a damaged Search profile, but it is not a hardware fix and will not correct a keyboard that fails in Notepad as well.
Advanced package and registry repair
Use this escalation only when Search remains unusable after Explorer and service restarts, diagnostics, updates, ctfmon.exe, and the version-appropriate reset. Microsoft documents a deeper Windows 10 repair that removes the affected Search package data, deletes the affected user’s Search registry key, re-registers the Search AppX manifest, and restarts the computer.

- Simply Wireless: Forget about drop-outs and delays thanks to a strong, reliable wireless connection with up to 33 ft range (5); K270 is compatible with Windows 7, 8, 10 or later
Why this step is risky
- Deleting package data and registry values changes per-user Windows configuration.
- An incorrect registry edit can cause serious problems. Back up the registry before making any change.
- The repair is more invasive and less reversible than restarting Explorer or a service.
- Re-registration must use the manifest and commands for the exact Windows 10 release; do not substitute paths copied from an unrelated build.
Technically confident users should follow Microsoft’s “Fix problems in Windows Search” sequence exactly, including the package AppData deletion, the user-specific Search registry-key removal, AppX re-registration, and final restart. If you cannot identify the correct package or registry location, stop at the documented reset and seek qualified support rather than guessing. A guessed registry path can damage the profile without fixing Search.
Choose the next action by symptom and risk
| Action | Best fit | Reversibility | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Test Notepad or a browser | Every Search failure | Safe | Separates a Search/UI fault from a system-wide keyboard fault. |
| Restart Windows Explorer | Start menu or taskbar Search is unresponsive | Low risk | The shell refreshes and may close or redraw Explorer windows. |
| Restart Windows Search service | Search process or results are stuck | Low risk | Use services.msc; restart the PC if it does not recover. |
| Search and Indexing troubleshooter | Search opens but behaves incorrectly | Low risk | Windows 10 1903 and later can run it automatically when a problem is detected. |
| Windows Update | Any persistent Windows 10 Search fault | Low risk | Install available updates and restart when requested. |
ctfmon.exe |
Typing fails in Windows UI fields but works in desktop apps | Low risk | Microsoft Q&A describes it as a possible language-bar and Search repair, not a guarantee. |
| ResetWindowsSearchBox.ps1 | Windows 10 version 1903 and later after earlier steps fail | Moderate | Administrator rights may be required; restore any temporary execution-policy change. |
| Cortana app reset | Windows 10 version 1809 or earlier | Moderate | Use the older version’s procedure, not the newer script. |
| Package and registry repair | Persistent, technically diagnosed Search corruption | High risk | Back up the registry and follow Microsoft’s exact release-specific commands. |
Fixes for common variations of the symptom
“I can paste into Search but cannot type”
This pattern shows that the Search field can accept text but the live keyboard-input path is failing. Verify that letters work in Notepad, restart Explorer and Windows Search, then run ctfmon.exe. If paste also stops working, treat the issue as a broader Search or shell failure and run the troubleshooter.
“Start menu Search ignores my keyboard, but File Explorer Search works”
That difference points toward the Start menu shell or its Search process rather than the physical keyboard. Restart Windows Explorer first, then restart Windows Search. A version-appropriate reset is warranted only if both components remain unresponsive.

“Search opens, but results are missing or irrelevant”
Typing and indexing are related but not identical. Run Search and Indexing troubleshooting and install updates. If you reset Search, Microsoft says files are not affected, but result relevance may be temporarily reduced while Search rebuilds its normal behavior.
“Nothing accepts the keyboard”
Do not start by deleting Search packages. Test another USB port, batteries or pairing, Device Manager, and another PC. A keyboard that fails on another PC should be replaced; a keyboard that works elsewhere indicates a Windows or computer-specific fault that needs driver and system troubleshooting.
When to stop troubleshooting
Stop after the first step that restores typing. More invasive resets add risk without improving a working Search box. If Search still refuses keyboard input after the correct version reset, document whether Notepad works, which Windows 10 version is installed, and which services or scripts were tried. That information lets support distinguish a user-profile Search package problem from a wider Windows text-input or hardware fault.
Microsoft’s current guidance, updated February 12, 2026, is the authority for the Search troubleshooter and reset procedures. Its central safety distinction is straightforward: Search reset does not delete files, but it can temporarily affect result relevance; registry and package repairs carry substantially greater risk and belong at the end of the sequence.
