Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWindows 10 error 0xC80070422 usually means the Windows Update service is disabled or stopped. The first repair is to enable and start that service in the Services console, restart the computer, and check for updates again. Microsoft’s troubleshooting table documents the closely matching code 0x80070422 with the message “Windows Update service is disabled or stopped”; if your dialog includes an extra C, verify the exact characters before troubleshooting.
This is normally a Windows service-state problem, not a reason to replace hardware. If enabling the service does not hold or the code returns, use Windows Update’s troubleshooter and then Microsoft’s update-component reset procedure. Also keep the operating-system lifecycle in mind: Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025, so Windows 10 no longer receives free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes.

What error 0xC80070422 means
Microsoft Learn classifies ERROR_SERVICE_DISABLED as a condition in which the Windows Update service has stopped working or is not running. The service is the background component that coordinates Windows Update activity. When it is disabled or stopped, Settings cannot complete the normal check, download, or installation workflow and may show an error beginning with 0x80070422 or, in some dialogs, the variant written as 0xC80070422.

The code identifies a service problem rather than naming a failed graphics card, storage device, or other physical component. A service can be stopped after a manual change, a policy or maintenance action, or a previous repair attempt. If the service is running but the error persists, the update components or another dependent service may need attention.
#1 Best Overall
Check the code and symptom first
- Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and note the complete message and code.
- Record whether Windows says the service is disabled, whether the update check fails immediately, or whether a download begins and then stops. These details determine which branch below is appropriate.
- If another computer or administrator changed Windows services, ask what was changed before undoing it. Do not disable security or system services at random.
Before you change Windows services
Save open work and sign in with an account that has administrator rights. The Services console can display every service, including ones that are essential to Windows; change only the entries named in this guide. If a service is already running, do not repeatedly stop it while Windows is installing an update. Finish or cancel the current update operation first, then restart the computer.
A restart is useful before deeper repair because it clears a service that is stuck in a transitional state. After restarting, return to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and try Check for updates. If the same code appears, continue with the service-state repair.
Fix 1: enable and start Windows Update in Services
This is the primary manual fix recommended for a disabled or stopped Windows Update service.

Rank #2
- Press Win + R to open the Run dialog.
- Type
services.mscand press Enter. Approve the User Account Control prompt if Windows asks for permission. - In the alphabetical list, locate Windows Update. The service may also be identified internally as
wuauserv. - Double-click Windows Update to open its Properties window.
- Open the Startup type menu and select Automatic. This allows Windows to start the service when it is needed instead of leaving it disabled.
- Look at Service status. If it says Stopped, click Start. If it already says Running, leave it running and continue to the troubleshooter section if the error remains.
- Click Apply, then OK to close the Properties window.
- Close the Services console and restart the PC.
- After Windows starts, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
Allow the first check to finish. A successful result may be “You’re up to date,” a list of available updates, or a download that proceeds without the 0x80070422 message. The important test is that Windows Update can now contact the update service and begin its normal workflow.
If Start is unavailable or the setting will not stay changed
- If Start is greyed out, close other management tools, reopen Services as an administrator, and try again.
- If the startup type immediately changes back to Disabled after a restart, a policy, security product, or damaged update configuration may be enforcing that state. Do not keep toggling it; run the Windows Update troubleshooter and proceed to the component-reset section.
- If Windows Update is absent from the list, the service registration or Windows components may be damaged. Skip repeated manual edits and use the troubleshooter and component-reset guidance instead.
- If Windows reports an access-denied error, sign in with an administrator account. Standard-user accounts cannot change protected service settings.
Fix 2: run the Windows Update troubleshooter
Use this path when Windows Update is already set to start automatically, the service starts successfully, or the error returns after the restart. Microsoft says the troubleshooter can help resolve error codes encountered while downloading and installing updates.
- Open Settings from the Start menu.
- Select Update & Security, then choose Troubleshoot in the left pane.
- Select Additional troubleshooters.
- Choose Windows Update, then click Run the troubleshooter.
- Follow each prompt. If Windows offers to apply a repair, select the option to apply it and wait for the process to complete.
- Restart the PC when prompted, return to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, and select Check for updates.
The troubleshooter may report that it found and fixed a problem, that it made changes, or that no issue was detected. A “no issue” result does not prove the service is healthy; check Services again if the code is still displayed and continue with the component reset.
Fix 3: restart update-related services and reset components
Microsoft’s broader troubleshooting guidance includes restarting update-related services, including Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS), and using its Windows Update component-reset procedure. This path is appropriate when the service appears enabled but the error keeps returning, when an update was interrupted, or when the troubleshooter cannot repair the configuration.

Restart BITS and Windows Update from an elevated Command Prompt
- Open Start and type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator. Approve User Account Control.
- Run these commands one at a time, pressing Enter after each:
net stop bits
net stop wuauserv
net start wuauserv
net start bits
Messages stating that a service was stopped or started confirm that Windows accepted the request. If a command says the service is not started, that is not necessarily an additional failure; it simply means there was nothing to stop. Close the window, restart the computer, and test Windows Update.
Use the full component-reset procedure when a simple restart is not enough
A component reset clears cached update data and rebuilds the update folders that Windows can recreate. Use an elevated Command Prompt and stop the update services before renaming their caches. Renaming is safer than deleting because the old folders remain available for rollback until Windows creates fresh ones.
- Open Command Prompt with Run as administrator.
- Stop the services that can hold update files open:
net stop bits
net stop wuauserv
net stop appidsvc
net stop cryptsvc
- Rename the two update data folders:
ren %systemroot%SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.bak
ren %systemroot%System32catroot2 catroot2.bak
- Start the services again:
net start bits
net start wuauserv
net start appidsvc
net start cryptsvc
- Restart Windows and select Check for updates in Windows Update.
If a rename command says the folder does not exist, continue with the remaining commands; Windows may already have recreated or renamed that cache. If a command says the folder is in use, verify that all four services were stopped, close other update-management windows, and retry from a new elevated Command Prompt.
When to stop the reset
Do not continue deleting system folders or changing registry values merely because the first reset did not help. If the service still becomes disabled, the service is missing, or another error replaces 0x80070422, use the troubleshooter’s result and Microsoft’s current component-reset instructions for the exact Windows 10 build. A failed reset is a signal to move to supported recovery steps, not to remove unrelated files.
Choose the repair path that matches the symptom
| Situation | Best first path | What it changes | What to do next |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows Update is disabled or stopped | Services console | Sets Windows Update to Automatic and starts it | Restart the PC and check for updates |
| The service is enabled, but the code returns | Windows Update troubleshooter | Automatically checks common update configuration problems | Apply its repair, restart, and test again |
| The troubleshooter cannot repair the issue or an interrupted update left stale data | Component reset | Restarts BITS and related services and rebuilds update caches | Restart Windows and run Check for updates |
| Windows Update is missing from Services | Troubleshooter and supported component-repair guidance | Investigates damaged service registration or components | Avoid random registry edits; use supported Windows recovery options |
| Windows 10 is functioning but no longer receives updates | Move to a supported Windows release, if the device qualifies | Addresses the operating system’s support status rather than a service setting | Do not expect a service repair to restore free Windows 10 security servicing |
What to do when the error returns
The service starts, then becomes disabled again
Set Startup type to Automatic once, restart, and check the setting again. If it reverted, document the time and any software or policy change that occurred before the reversal. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter. Persistent reversion points to a configuration or policy conflict rather than a one-time stopped service; changing unrelated services can make the system less stable.
Best Value
The service is running, but checking for updates fails immediately
Run the troubleshooter first. If it cannot resolve the code, restart BITS and Windows Update from an elevated Command Prompt, then perform the component reset. Test after each stage so you know which change altered the behavior.
The update downloads but installation fails with a different code
That is no longer the same service-state symptom. Record the new code and message before applying another fix. The 0xC80070422 procedure specifically addresses a disabled or stopped Windows Update service; it does not guarantee a repair for every later installation error.
The troubleshooter says it fixed the problem but the code remains
Restart Windows even if the troubleshooter did not request it, then verify the Windows Update service in services.msc. If the service is still set to Automatic and running, use the component-reset procedure. If the service is missing or access is denied, stop making manual changes and use supported Windows recovery guidance.
The PC cannot be moved to a supported release
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. Repairing 0xC80070422 can restore the service’s operation, but it cannot extend Windows 10’s support lifecycle. Check whether the device can move to a currently supported Windows release; if it cannot, plan a supported operating-system or device strategy rather than treating the service error as a permanent source of updates.
Windows 10 support status and this error
The end-of-support date matters when interpreting the final test. On a supported servicing period, a repaired service should be able to check Microsoft’s update channels and present applicable updates. After October 14, 2025, the absence of new free Windows 10 updates may be expected even when the service is configured correctly. The service repair remains useful for diagnosing the specific error, but it is not a way to obtain security fixes that Microsoft no longer supplies for Windows 10.
