Windows error 0x8007045D means “The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.” The code often appears when Windows cannot reliably read from or write to a disk, USB drive, SD card, optical disc, cable, reader, or storage controller. The characters in the search phrase 08007045d are usually a missing x and a transposed zero; the Windows code is 0x8007045D.

Protect important files first, then isolate the operation, media and connection that are failing. Reseat the device, test another port, cable and computer, and run a disk check only after readable data is backed up. If the error follows a drive or card across several systems, treat it as a likely hardware failure rather than a normal Windows 10 setting.

What error 0x8007045D means

Windows maps hexadecimal error 0x8007045D to ERROR_IO_DEVICE. In plain language, a request to read or write data could not be completed by the input/output path. That path includes the storage medium, its electronics, the USB or SATA connection, a reader or dock, the Windows storage driver and, in some cases, the optical drive or disc.

This is not one universal Windows 10 software fault. The same code can be produced while copying files, creating a backup, installing Windows, applying an update, burning a disc or reading removable media. The code does not identify the failed component by itself, so the first useful diagnosis is to record exactly what operation failed and which device was involved.

Why the missing “x” matters

Searches for “08007045d” generally refer to 0x8007045D. Windows error codes use the 0x hexadecimal prefix. Correcting the spelling helps you match the message in Event Viewer, setup logs and Microsoft support documentation.

Before troubleshooting: protect your data

An I/O error can be an early sign that a drive, card or reader is deteriorating. Every additional write or repeated retry can make recovery harder. Decide how valuable the data is before running repair commands.

  • Irreplaceable files: Stop experiments that write to the failing device. If files are still readable, copy them once to a different healthy disk. If the device is disappearing, making unusual noises or becoming progressively slower, power it down and consult a professional data-recovery service.
  • Backed-up files: You can test the device and run file-system checks after confirming that the backup opens correctly.
  • No important data: You have more freedom to reformat or replace the device, but first complete the isolation tests below so you do not erase a healthy destination while the real problem is a cable or reader.

Do not format a drive merely because Windows offers to do so. Formatting destroys the file-system information that may be needed to recover files.

Identify the failing path

Write down the operation, source, destination and connection before changing anything. This prevents you from testing the wrong device.

Copying or moving files Source disk, destination disk, USB cable, port or hub Copy a small readable file to another destination; then test the source on another port or computer.
Backup or disk-image creation Source volume, backup disk, imaging software or storage controller Check whether ordinary files can be read from the source and whether the backup disk accepts a test file.
Windows installation Installation USB/DVD, ISO, target disk, firmware storage mode or USB port Disconnect nonessential hardware and recreate or retest the installation media.
Windows Update System files, update cache, services or the system disk Run the Windows Update troubleshooter and check the system disk before resetting the cache.
Burning or reading an optical disc Blank or damaged disc, burner lens, firmware or media compatibility Try a different known-good disc and verify the burner’s documentation.
SD card, USB flash drive or external disk Card, enclosure, reader, cable, hub or port Use a direct port, another reader or another computer without writing to the card.

Universal hardware and connection checks

  1. Cancel the failing operation. Close the application that reported the error and eject removable media through “Safely Remove Hardware” when Windows still responds.
  2. Reconnect the device. Remove and firmly reinsert the USB drive, card or cable. For an internal SATA drive, shut down fully before checking power and data connections; do not open a laptop unless you are qualified to do so.
  3. Change one connection at a time. Use a different known-good USB port, preferably a port directly on the computer rather than a hub or dock. Try a replacement cable that matches the device’s specification.
  4. Bypass adapters and hubs. Connect an external drive or reader directly to the computer. A marginal hub, dock or bus-powered enclosure can interrupt transfers even when the storage medium is healthy.
  5. Test another computer. Use a second Windows computer if possible. If the same device fails with different ports, cables and computers, the device itself becomes the leading suspect.
  6. Test a known-good device in the original setup. A different USB drive or card can distinguish a faulty computer port or reader from a faulty original device.
  7. Check power. A desktop external drive may need its own power adapter. A bus-powered device that repeatedly disconnects may need a powered hub or a direct high-power port.
  8. Inspect physical condition. Bent USB contacts, cracked card housings, corrosion and loose connectors are practical reasons to stop using the medium and copy data while it remains readable.

After each change, repeat only the smallest operation that originally failed. Testing a small file is safer and more informative than immediately starting a multi-hour copy or format.

Fixing 0x8007045D while copying files

Separate a bad source file from a failing source device

If one file always fails while other files copy, the file may occupy a damaged area or have permissions that block access. Try several small files from different folders. If failures occur at changing locations, the device, connection or controller is more likely to be at fault. Copy readable files first; do not use a “move” operation until the copy has been verified.

Use a different destination

A full or failing destination disk can produce the same code. Confirm that the destination has free space and copy a test file to another disk. If the source works with a different destination, investigate the original destination’s cable, enclosure, file system and health.

  1. Open Start, type Command Prompt, right-click it and choose Run as administrator.
  2. Enter chkdsk /R X:, replacing X: with the affected drive letter.
  3. Read the warning. If Windows says the volume is in use, allow a schedule at the next restart only if you have a current backup and the device is stable.
  4. Let the scan finish without disconnecting the drive. Large disks can take a long time.

The /R option asks Windows to locate bad sectors and recover readable information. It performs substantial reads and may stress a failing device, which is why it is inappropriate as a first action when files are irreplaceable or the device is rapidly deteriorating.

Fixing an external drive, USB flash drive or SD card

Check Disk Management

Press Windows key + X and choose Disk Management. Confirm whether the device appears, has the expected capacity and has a drive letter. A missing drive letter can prevent normal access, but assigning one does not repair a physically failing disk. Do not initialize, delete partitions or format the device if you still need its files.

Check Device Manager without deleting evidence

Open Device Manager and expand Disk drives, Portable Devices and Universal Serial Bus controllers. A warning icon can indicate a driver or connection problem. Record the device name and error before changing it. Uninstalling a storage device can cause Windows to rediscover it, but it will not repair damaged media and should not be used as a substitute for data recovery.

Readers and write-protected cards

Try the card in a different reader. Some readers fail with high-capacity cards or particular file systems. Check the physical lock tab on a full-size SD adapter; a locked card should be readable but not writable. Do not repeatedly force a write if the card is intermittently disconnecting.

Fixing 0x8007045D during Windows installation

  1. Disconnect nonessential hardware. Remove extra external drives, printers, card readers and other USB devices. Leave only the installation media, keyboard or mouse and the target hardware required to install.
  2. Check the installation media. Reseat the USB installer, use a different direct USB port and try another known-good flash drive if available. If the installer was created from a damaged download or unreliable media, recreate it from Microsoft’s current installation guidance for Windows 10 or Windows 11.
  3. Check the target disk. In Windows Setup, confirm that the intended disk and capacity are listed. Selecting or deleting partitions can destroy data, so stop if the disk contains files you need.
  4. Review firmware storage settings. A storage mode change in UEFI/BIOS can make an existing installation or disk unavailable. Record the current setting before changing anything and follow the computer or motherboard documentation.
  5. Try a different path. A different USB port, cable, enclosure or installation drive can reveal whether the error belongs to the installer or the target disk.

If setup fails at different percentages with different installation media but always targets the same disk, the target disk or its controller deserves priority testing. If the same installer fails on several computers, recreate the installer before replacing hardware.

Fixing the error during Windows Update

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. The troubleshooting steps below can still repair a Windows 10 installation, but they should not be read as a promise of continuing normal feature or security updates after that date.

Run the built-in troubleshooter

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Choose Update & Security, then Troubleshoot.
  3. Select Additional troubleshooters, choose Windows Update, and select Run the troubleshooter.
  4. Apply the suggested repair and restart before testing Windows Update again.

Check update-related services

Press Windows key + R, enter services.msc, and verify that Windows Update, Background Intelligent Transfer Service and Cryptographic Services are not disabled. Start a stopped service only when Windows allows it and note any error shown in the service properties.

Repair system files

Open an elevated Command Prompt and run:

sfc /scannow

Wait for verification to reach 100 percent and follow the result. If SFC reports that it could not repair files, use the documented Windows image-repair procedure for your edition, then run SFC again. A common Windows 10 command is:

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

These commands repair Windows components; they cannot fix a physically failing disk or USB device. If the command itself reports I/O errors, return to hardware and disk checks.

Reset the update cache carefully

Cache reset steps rename update folders after stopping their services. Use an elevated Command Prompt, stop Windows Update, BITS and Cryptographic Services, rename C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution and C:WindowsSystem32catroot2, then start the services again. Type each command deliberately and do not delete unrelated folders. Restart and check for updates. If the system disk is reporting I/O errors, do not keep resetting the cache; investigate the disk first.

Fixing the error with optical discs

For a CD, DVD or Blu-ray operation, the disc itself and the burner are separate possible causes. Use a new, compatible disc from a different batch and clean fingerprints from the label-free side with a soft cloth. Confirm that the disc type and capacity are supported by the drive and burning software. If reading works but burning fails, test another blank disc and check the burner’s documentation or firmware. If several known-good discs fail in the same drive, the burner, its connection or its firmware may be defective.

How to decide whether the hardware is failing

Use the pattern of failures rather than the code alone:

  • Only one cable or port fails: replace that cable or avoid that port and retest.
  • One reader or dock fails with multiple healthy devices: replace or bypass the reader or dock.
  • One drive or card fails everywhere: copy what remains readable, stop writing and plan replacement or professional recovery.
  • Several devices fail on one computer: investigate USB power, chipset drivers, motherboard ports, storage-controller settings and the computer’s own disk.
  • Failures begin after a drop, moisture exposure or unusual noise: treat the medium as physically damaged and prioritize recovery over repair.

Replace hardware only after confirming which component follows the error. Replacing a cable is reasonable; replacing a disk before securing its data is not.

What not to do

  • Do not format or initialize a device containing needed files.
  • Do not repeatedly retry a failing write or run a full surface scan before copying valuable data.
  • Do not assume a drive-letter change, driver reinstall or registry cleaner can repair bad sectors.
  • Do not continue using a device that vanishes, clicks, overheats or becomes steadily slower.
  • Do not infer that Windows itself is broken merely because the message appeared during an update; the system disk and update path still need testing.

A practical decision sequence

  1. Record the exact operation and device.
  2. Protect valuable data and stop writes when the device is unstable.
  3. Reseat the device, bypass hubs, change the port and cable, and test another computer.
  4. Use the operation-specific steps for copying, setup, updating, optical media or removable storage.
  5. Run chkdsk /R X: only when the medium is readable and backed up.
  6. Use SFC, DISM and update-cache repair only for Windows Update or system-file symptoms.
  7. Escalate to hardware replacement or professional recovery when the error follows the device across independent connections.
