Error 0x80070057 means “The parameter is incorrect.” It is not a single Windows 10 failure with one universal cure. The same code can appear during Windows Update, a version upgrade, installation-media setup, file access, backup work, or another application. The correct fix depends on the operation that produced it.
The title is commonly mistyped as 0X800070057; Microsoft’s standard code is 0x80070057. Start with the built-in repair that matches the failing operation, and make a backup before changing update components or attempting an upgrade.

What error 0x80070057 means
Windows uses 0x80070057 for an invalid or unexpected parameter passed to an operation. In practical terms, a setting, file path, update package, storage condition, or other input was not accepted. The code identifies the type of failure, but not the exact component that failed.

Treat the screen, wizard, or application that displayed the code as the most important diagnostic clue.

First identify where the code appears
| Where you see 0x80070057 | What it usually tells you to investigate first | Best first repair | Is installation media the first step? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows Update downloading or installing an update | The update troubleshooter, system-file integrity, or a damaged update cache | Run the Windows Update troubleshooter, then sfc /scannow; reset the cache only if the update branch points to it |
No |
| Windows 10 upgrade or setup | Upgrade configuration, installation files, or available storage | Run the troubleshooter and SFC first; use Windows 10 installation media if the upgrade continues to fail | Only as an escalation |
| File access, backup, or restore | The file, destination, path, or parameters supplied to that particular operation | Repeat the operation with the correct path and destination, and use SFC if Windows components may be damaged | No |
| A particular application or utility | That program’s input, configuration, or interaction with Windows | Record the exact action and apply repairs to the affected component rather than resetting Windows Update blindly | No |
This distinction prevents a common mistake: deleting the Windows Update cache when the error actually came from a backup or file operation.
Before you repair anything
Back up personal files
Copy important documents, photos, project files, browser exports, and other irreplaceable data to a separate drive or a trusted cloud location. Microsoft places this warning before its Windows Update procedures because troubleshooting and upgrade work can involve restarting services, replacing files, or running installation media. A backup is also essential before an upgrade attempt, regardless of whether the error disappears.
Write down the exact context
Note the application or Settings page, the action immediately before the error, whether the code appeared during download or installation, and whether a second code or message was shown. “The parameter is incorrect” is broad; these details decide which branch below is relevant.
Check your Windows lifecycle
Microsoft states that support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. After that date, normal free software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes are no longer provided through the Windows 10 support lifecycle. You can still use the repair steps for an existing installation, but a failed update in 2026 may also be a signal to plan a move to a currently supported Windows release. Do not assume that every Windows 10 update remains available after the end of support.
Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
Use this branch when 0x80070057 appears in Windows Update or when the update process itself reports that a parameter is incorrect. The troubleshooter is built in and is reversible; it is a safer first action than manually deleting system folders.
Current Settings path
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Choose System, then Troubleshoot.
- Open Other troubleshooters.
- Find Windows Update and select Run.
- Apply any correction that Windows reports, restart if prompted, and retry the same update.
Older Windows 10 Settings path
Some Windows 10 builds use the earlier layout: Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters > Windows Update. Select the troubleshooter, run it, apply its recommended action, and restart before trying Windows Update again.
When the troubleshooter does not solve it
Record what it found and continue to System File Checker. Do not repeatedly run the troubleshooter while changing unrelated settings; one pass followed by a controlled next step makes it easier to identify the cause.

Repair Windows system files with System File Checker
Microsoft lists System File Checker (SFC) for the 0x80070057 branch involving corruption or configuration problems. SFC checks protected Windows files and repairs problems it can resolve using the local component store.
- Open Start and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
- At the elevated prompt, enter:
sfc /scannow
- Wait for the scan to reach 100 percent. Do not close the window or restart while it is running.
- Restart Windows when the scan finishes, then repeat the operation that produced 0x80070057.
SFC can report that it found and repaired files, found files but could not repair some of them, or found no integrity violations. Keep the result text. If the same operation still fails, the result tells you whether the next step should target the update cache, installation media, or the application that supplied the invalid parameter.
Reset the Windows Update cache only for an update failure
A damaged update download or cache can cause Windows Update to reuse invalid data. Microsoft’s procedure stops the Windows Update service, clears C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution, and starts the service again. Perform this step only when the code occurs in Windows Update or an upgrade that is clearly reusing update files. It is not a general remedy for file-access or backup errors.

- Save open work and sign in with an administrator account.
- Open Services from Start, locate Windows Update, right-click it, and choose Stop. If Windows refuses to stop it, restart and try again before clearing the folder.
- In File Explorer, browse to
C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution. - Delete the contents of that folder, not the
SoftwareDistributionfolder itself. Windows will recreate the needed cache data. - Return to Services, right-click Windows Update, and choose Start.
- Restart the computer and check for the update again.
Some files may be in use. If Explorer cannot remove an item, leave it in place, restart Windows, and repeat the stop-and-clear sequence. Do not delete unrelated folders under C:Windows.
Use Windows 10 installation media when an upgrade still fails
Microsoft’s upgrade guidance includes the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool and installation media as an escalation path when normal updating or upgrading continues to fail. This is not required for every 0x80070057 incident. Use it after the troubleshooter, SFC, and an update-cache reset have failed—or when the error appears directly in Windows Setup.
When a USB drive is useful
A USB flash drive can provide installation or recovery media, and it may be necessary when the computer has limited local storage for the upgrade files. The drive becomes the place where the Windows 10 installation media is created; it is not a substitute for backing up personal files.
Preparation checklist
- Back up personal files before starting.
- Use a USB drive with enough capacity for the installation media and understand that creating media can erase its existing contents.
- Keep the computer connected to reliable power during media creation and setup.
- Disconnect unnecessary external devices so Setup has fewer possible storage or device parameters to evaluate.
- Confirm that you are repairing or upgrading the intended Windows installation before proceeding.
Retrying the upgrade
Use Microsoft’s Windows 10 Media Creation Tool to create installation media, then start the upgrade or recovery process from that media according to the option presented by Setup. Follow the edition and architecture choices that match the existing installation. If Setup displays 0x80070057 again, record the exact stage—media creation, preparation, copying, or first restart—because the stage determines whether the media, storage, or the existing installation is at fault.

If the code appears while opening, copying, backing up, or restoring a file, do not reset Windows Update components first. Check the operation’s inputs instead.
Verify the source and destination
- Confirm that the source file or folder still exists and that the destination drive is connected.
- Check that the path points to the intended drive and folder, rather than a disconnected network or removable location.
- Retry with a simple local destination to determine whether the original destination is the problem.
- If the operation is part of a third-party application, capture its exact error text and settings before changing Windows components.
Use SFC when Windows itself may be damaged
Run sfc /scannow as described above if the same file operation fails across multiple locations or Windows functions also behave abnormally. If only one application fails while other file operations work, focus on that application’s configuration and input rather than treating the code as proof of a Windows Update problem.
Decision guide: choose the least invasive matching repair
- Windows Update screen: run the Windows Update troubleshooter.
- Update still fails: run SFC from an elevated Command Prompt.
- Evidence of a damaged update cache: stop Windows Update, clear the contents of
C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution, start the service, restart, and retry. - Upgrade or Setup still fails: create Windows 10 installation media and retry the upgrade, especially if local storage is limited.
- File, backup, or application operation: verify its source, destination, and parameters; do not apply an update-cache reset unless Windows Update is also the failing operation.
- Windows 10 remains unreliable after repair: account for the October 14, 2025 end of support and evaluate migration to a supported Windows release rather than relying indefinitely on obsolete update infrastructure.
Do you need a Windows 10 repair USB?
Usually, no. The Windows Update troubleshooter and SFC are built into Windows, and an update-cache reset does not require removable media. A USB becomes relevant when an upgrade or installation repeatedly fails, when Setup itself reports the code, or when the computer lacks enough local storage for the upgrade files. In those cases, installation media gives Setup another way to obtain the required files; it does not guarantee that every 0x80070057 cause will be repaired.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using the mistyped code: search and troubleshoot the standard code, 0x80070057, not 0x800070057.
- Applying one universal fix: the same code is documented for Windows Update and file-access situations, so the failing operation matters.
- Deleting the wrong folder: clear only the contents of
C:WindowsSoftwareDistributionfor an update-cache problem; do not remove unrelated Windows directories. - Skipping a backup: Microsoft places backup guidance before update procedures for a reason, and an upgrade can affect the system even when personal files are intended to remain.
- Assuming a successful scan proves the cause: SFC can repair corruption, but a clean result does not explain an invalid parameter supplied by a backup utility or another application.
- Ignoring lifecycle status: Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so continued update failures may require a supported-platform decision rather than endless cache resets.
What a successful repair should look like
After each change, repeat the same action that originally produced 0x80070057. A Windows Update repair is successful when the update downloads and installs without the parameter message; an upgrade repair is successful when Setup completes its intended stage; a file or backup repair is successful when that exact source-to-destination operation completes. If the code returns in a different operation, stop and reclassify the problem instead of repeating the previous branch.
No Microsoft source establishes a universal success rate or a single step that always fixes 0x80070057. The dependable method is context-first troubleshooting: identify the failed operation, use the least invasive built-in repair for that operation, and escalate to installation media only when the update or upgrade path warrants it.

Bottom line
0x80070057 is Windows’ “The parameter is incorrect” code, not a diagnosis of one specific component. Back up your files, run the Windows Update troubleshooter when Update is the failing operation, repair protected files with sfc /scannow, reset C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution only for an update-cache problem, and use Windows 10 installation media when an upgrade still cannot proceed. For file access, backup, or application errors, troubleshoot the source, destination, and parameters involved instead.
