Windows 10 error 0x80070057 means “The parameter is incorrect.” The title’s 0X800070057 has an extra zero and is not the code Microsoft lists for this problem. If the complete message actually contains 0x80070005, that is a different error—E_ACCESSDENIED—and requires permission-focused troubleshooting. Confirm the exact code first, then use the Windows Update or setup steps below.

Confirm which error you have

Error codes that look similar lead to different repairs. Read the entire dialog, Windows Update history entry, or setup log and copy the code exactly before changing anything.

0x80070057 The parameter is incorrect Windows Update, feature upgrades, or Windows setup Use the Windows Update troubleshooter, then run System File Checker; simplify hardware if it occurs during setup.
0x80070005 E_ACCESSDENIED Servicing, updates, installation, or another operation that cannot access a required resource Check administrative access and permissions, and investigate servicing-stack, file-system, registry, or security-software interference.

If your screen really shows 0X800070057, check whether the message was copied incorrectly, whether two codes were joined together, or whether a log line contains more than one hexadecimal value. The troubleshooting below is for the documented 0x80070057 code unless a step specifically says otherwise.

Prepare before troubleshooting

  • Record the context. Note whether the failure occurs while downloading an ordinary Windows Update, installing a feature update, or performing a clean or in-place upgrade. The same code can require different checks in each situation.
  • Save work and make a backup. Troubleshooting normally leaves personal files in place, but an upgrade or repair can still fail or require a rollback. Keep an independent copy of important documents before retrying setup.
  • Use an administrator account. System repair commands and servicing operations need elevated rights. If the account is standard, sign in with an administrator account or have an administrator approve the operation.
  • Write down the exact wording. “The parameter is incorrect” points to 0x80070057; “Access is denied” generally points to 0x80070005. Do not substitute one for the other because the remedies are not interchangeable.

Fix 0x80070057 in Windows Update

1. Run Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooter

Microsoft associates 0x80070057 and the related 0x80080005 update failures with corrupted files, permission problems, or incorrect system configuration. Its first recommended action is the Windows Update troubleshooter.

  1. Open Settings from the Start menu.
  2. Choose Update & Security, then Troubleshoot.
  3. Open Additional troubleshooters and select Windows Update.
  4. Choose Run the troubleshooter and allow Windows to apply any suggested repair.
  5. Restart if Windows requests it. Return to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and select Check for updates.

On Windows 10 builds that expose the newer support interface, the same diagnostic may open through Get Help. Follow the on-screen Windows Update diagnostic and then retry the update. If it reports that no problem was found, continue with the file-integrity check rather than repeatedly pressing “try again.”

2. Check protected Windows files with System File Checker

Microsoft’s update guidance specifically recommends System File Checker for the corrupted-file and configuration class represented by 0x80070057.

  1. Open the Start menu and type Command Prompt.
  2. Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  3. Enter sfc /scannow and press Enter.
  4. Leave the window open until verification reaches 100 percent. Do not close it because the percentage appears to pause at times while files are checked.
  5. Read the final message. If SFC repaired files, restart Windows and run Windows Update again. If it says it could not repair some files, keep the result for support and proceed with the update troubleshooter’s remaining recommendations rather than claiming the error is fixed.

SFC checks Windows system files; it does not prove that every update component, driver, or third-party program is healthy. A clean SFC result therefore does not rule out a setup-specific cause.

3. Retry once after the repair

After the troubleshooter or SFC has completed, restart the computer if requested and try the same update once. Record whether the failure happens during download, installation, or the restart phase. That detail determines whether you should move to setup hardware checks or permission troubleshooting.

When 0x80070057 appears during an upgrade or Windows setup

An upgrade has more variables than a routine update. Microsoft’s upgrade guidance says to consult the upgrade error table, remove disks that are not being used for installation, disconnect unnecessary peripherals, and check drivers and other setup conditions.

Simplify the installation target

  1. Identify the disk or partition on which Windows is being installed.
  2. Shut down the computer completely.
  3. Disconnect external hard drives, USB storage, card readers, docking stations, and other devices that are not required to run the installer. Leave only essential input devices and the installation media connected.
  4. If the computer contains multiple internal disks and the installer is not using them, follow the manufacturer’s safe-disconnection procedure or have a technician disconnect the non-target disks. Do not remove a disk blindly if it contains the boot files for the current installation.
  5. Start setup again and select the intended installation target carefully.

The purpose is diagnostic: removing unused disks and peripherals eliminates competing boot records, storage paths, and drivers. If setup succeeds after the hardware is simplified, reconnect devices one at a time after Windows is stable so the offending component can be identified.

Review drivers and the setup error table

A setup failure can be caused by a driver or another condition that is not present in an ordinary update. Use Microsoft’s upgrade error table to match the complete message, not just the first hexadecimal code. Check the computer manufacturer’s current Windows 10 drivers for storage, chipset, network, and display hardware, and remove or disconnect hardware that setup does not need. Avoid installing a driver simply because its version number is newer; it must be intended for the exact device and Windows edition.

If setup rolls back, write down the stage at which it failed and any secondary code. A rollback at the first compatibility check points toward hardware, drivers, or configuration; a failure after files have copied may require the exact setup log or error-table entry. The code alone is not enough to identify the failing component.

If the code is actually 0x80070005 (“Access denied”)

0x80070005 is Microsoft’s HRESULT = 0x80070005 - E_ACCESSDENIED. It is not another spelling of 0x80070057. Microsoft documents changed or insufficient servicing-stack, file-system, or registry permissions as possible causes.

Verify elevation and the operation

  • Sign in with an administrator account and retry the operation once.
  • When launching a repair utility or Command Prompt, use Run as administrator.
  • Check the exact object that reports denial: Windows Update, a setup program, a file, a folder, or a registry operation. Permissions on one object do not automatically explain a failure on another.

Do not take ownership of random system folders or grant broad “Everyone” permissions as a quick fix. Those changes can weaken Windows security and may damage servicing. Use Microsoft’s dedicated access-denied guidance for the specific component named in the error, and change only the permission that the documented procedure requires.

Check for interference without disabling protection recklessly

Security software, controlled-folder policies, or corporate management rules can block a legitimate servicing operation. If this is a work-managed PC, contact the administrator before changing policy. On a personal PC, review the security product’s blocked-action or quarantine history and use its documented temporary troubleshooting mode only if the vendor explains how to restore protection immediately afterward. Never leave real-time protection disabled as a permanent repair.

What Windows 10 support status changes

Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Free software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes no longer continue through Windows Update under the standard support period. Repairing an existing installation can still restore functionality or let you recover files, but a successful repair does not restore ongoing security support.

If you are attempting an upgrade after that date, distinguish two goals: fixing a damaged Windows 10 installation and moving to a supported operating system. The troubleshooting steps above address the first goal. For the second, check Microsoft’s current eligibility and migration guidance for the computer rather than assuming that clearing 0x80070057 makes every later upgrade supported.

When to stop repeating the same attempt

  • The troubleshooter completes but the identical code returns immediately.
  • SFC reports unrepaired files or setup rolls back repeatedly.
  • The code changes from 0x80070057 to 0x80070005, indicating that the problem category may be permissions rather than an invalid parameter.
  • The failure follows one particular external disk, peripheral, or driver.
  • The computer is managed by an organization and you cannot change servicing or security policy.

At that point, preserve the exact messages and logs, undo any temporary hardware or security changes, and use Microsoft’s error-specific support or a qualified technician. Repeating an update without changing the diagnosed condition rarely produces a different result and can make the original symptom harder to interpret.
