First verify the digits. Microsoft’s Windows Update guidance documents 0x80070422, not 0x800700422. The documented code means the Windows Update service is disabled or stopped. If your screen really shows 0x80070422, set Windows Update to start automatically, start it, restart the PC, and check for updates again. If it really shows 0x800700422, do not change services yet: confirm the value in the original error dialog, Settings, CBS.log, or Event Viewer because the two codes are not interchangeable.

Confirm whether the code is 0x800700422 or 0x80070422

The exact string 0x800700422 does not appear in Microsoft’s Windows Update and Windows upgrade error tables reviewed for this issue. It may be a transcription error in which an extra 0 was added to the documented 0x80070422 value. Microsoft describes 0x80070422 as a Windows Update failure that occurs when the update service is disabled or not running.

Before editing a service or running repair commands, capture the code exactly as Windows reports it. Check the original pop-up or Settings page, and if the failure occurred during an upgrade, compare the time of the failure with entries in CBS.log or Event Viewer. Microsoft’s general update troubleshooting page is the appropriate starting point for identifying the failure: Windows Update troubleshooting. For an upgrade or installation failure, use Microsoft’s Windows upgrade and installation error guidance.

  • If the code is 0x80070422: follow the service repair below. These are the documented first-line steps.
  • If the code is exactly 0x800700422: record the complete message and log entry before making changes. The documented 0x80070422 remedy may not apply to an unverified value.
  • If another code appears in the same event: use that complete code and its timestamp when matching Microsoft’s troubleshooting information.

Fix documented error 0x80070422 by enabling Windows Update

Changing one service is the lowest-risk, most reversible fix for the documented code. You need an account that can open the Services console and apply a startup-setting change.

  1. Press Win+R to open the Run dialog.
  2. Type services.msc and press Enter. If Windows asks for permission, approve the administrative prompt.
  3. In the Services list, find Windows Update. The list is alphabetical, so scrolling to the W section can be faster than searching through unrelated services.
  4. Double-click Windows Update to open its Properties window.
  5. Set Startup type to Automatic.
  6. Look at Service status. If it says Stopped, select Start.
  7. Select Apply, then OK to close the Properties window.
  8. Restart the computer. A restart makes the service-state change take effect in a clean session and clears the pending update attempt.
  9. After signing in, open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and select Check for updates.

If the service starts and Windows Update completes its check, no advanced repair is required. If the service immediately stops again, Windows reports a different error, or the same code returns after the restart, continue with the built-in troubleshooter rather than repeatedly toggling the setting.

If Windows will not let you start the service

Read the message shown by the Services console and note the time. Do not delete service entries or change unrelated startup settings. A service that refuses to start can point to a different failure than a service that was simply disabled, so preserve the exact message for the next diagnostic step. Recheck the code in the update history and logs before moving to component repair.

Run the Windows Update troubleshooter

Windows 10 includes a troubleshooter that checks common update configuration problems. It is safer than manually changing multiple services or deleting update data, and it can identify a problem even when the displayed code is incomplete.

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Update & Security.
  3. Choose Troubleshoot in the left pane.
  4. Select Additional troubleshooters.
  5. Choose Windows Update, then select Run the troubleshooter.
  6. Allow the checks to finish. Follow any on-screen action it specifically requests, and record whether it reports a change, a problem it could not repair, or no issue found.
  7. Restart Windows when the process finishes.
  8. Return to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and select Check for updates again.

Microsoft documents this path and workflow in its Windows Update Troubleshooter instructions. Run it after confirming the code and, where applicable, after enabling the Windows Update service. If it reports that it could not resolve the issue, keep that result with the error code and timestamp instead of repeating the same run indefinitely.

Reset Windows Update components when the basic steps do not hold

Microsoft’s update troubleshooting workflow includes resetting Windows Update components for failures that persist after the service and troubleshooter steps. Component reset is more invasive than changing a startup type because it can clear or rebuild update state. Use Microsoft’s current instructions for the exact reset sequence that matches your Windows 10 build: Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting workflow.

Before applying a reset, write down the original code, the date and time of the failed attempt, and whether the Windows Update service stayed running. That information helps distinguish a service-state problem from component-store corruption or an unrelated installation failure. Follow the Microsoft sequence exactly; do not improvise commands from a different Windows version, and do not remove folders simply because their names contain “Update.”

What a component reset can and cannot tell you

  • A successful reset followed by a successful update points to damaged or inconsistent update state.
  • A reset that changes nothing does not prove that the installation is beyond repair; the displayed code may have been transcribed incorrectly or the failure may be in another component.
  • A reset should not be treated as a substitute for checking the code in CBS.log or Event Viewer when Windows reports component corruption.

Use DISM and SFC only when logs indicate component-store corruption

Microsoft Learn recommends the Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) and System File Checker (SFC) repairs for applicable corruption errors. They are not a universal response to every Windows Update code. Use them when the failure details or CBS.log show component-store or protected-system-file corruption, and run them from an elevated Command Prompt.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start and type Command Prompt.
  2. Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  3. Run this command and wait for it to finish:
    Dism.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /Restorehealth
  4. When DISM completes, run:
    Sfc.exe /Scannow
  5. Allow SFC to reach 100 percent. Do not close the window while either scan is still running.
  6. Restart the PC.
  7. Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and select Check for updates.

The commands can take time and may appear to pause while they process the component store. The important evidence is the final result and the corresponding log entry, not the elapsed time alone. Microsoft’s reference for matching CBS.log errors to these repairs is Common Windows Update errors.

How to tie the scans to the right failure

Note the timestamp of the failed update, then inspect the relevant portion of CBS.log rather than treating every warning in the file as the cause. If the log does not show component-store corruption, stop after the service and troubleshooter work and use the error-specific Microsoft guidance instead. Running DISM and SFC repeatedly without log evidence adds work but does not establish that the original 0x80070422 condition was repaired.

Choose the remedy by confidence, risk and evidence

The following order keeps reversible actions ahead of repairs that require stronger evidence.

Remedy Confidence in the code Risk Reversibility Evidence needed
Confirm the digits and review the message Essential for any code Very low Fully reversible Original dialog, Settings page, CBS.log or Event Viewer
Set Windows Update to Automatic and start it High when the value is 0x80070422 Low Easy to undo in Services Documented 0x80070422 value and a stopped or disabled service
Run the Windows Update troubleshooter High after the code is confirmed Low Changes are generally reversible Windows 10 Settings path and the troubleshooter result
Reset Windows Update components Moderate; depends on the failure details Higher than the first two steps Follow Microsoft’s workflow to restore state Persistent failure after first-line steps
DISM and SFC Appropriate when corruption is shown Requires an elevated prompt Repair operation; review final results CBS.log or failure details indicating component-store corruption
Reinstall Windows or replace hardware Not established by 0x80070422 alone High Not a simple rollback A separately diagnosed installation or hardware failure

Diagnose a failure that returns after repair

Check whether the service stayed enabled

After restarting, open services.msc again and verify that Windows Update still shows Startup type: Automatic and a running status when an update check is active. If it has reverted, record that behavior and the exact message shown when you try to start it. A recurring service-state change is different from a one-time disabled setting and needs evidence from the logs or the responsible configuration.

Compare the update history with the error time

Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > View update history and identify the failed update and its time. Compare that time with the code shown in the dialog and with entries in CBS.log or Event Viewer. This prevents you from repairing an old failure while troubleshooting a newer one with a different code.

Do not assume every update failure is 0x80070422

An update attempt can display more than one message during a failed session. If a later attempt shows a different hexadecimal value, use the complete latest value. Microsoft’s tables and upgrade guidance are organized by specific codes and contexts, so substituting 0x80070422 for an unverified value can send troubleshooting in the wrong direction.

When reinstalling Windows or replacing hardware is justified

Neither 0x80070422 nor the unverified string 0x800700422 by itself establishes that Windows must be reinstalled or that a component has failed. Reinstallation can remove applications, settings and data if it is performed incorrectly, while hardware replacement addresses a different class of diagnosis. Reserve either action for a separately documented installation or hardware failure after the service state, troubleshooter, component workflow and relevant logs have been evaluated.

If you reach that point, preserve personal files and the exact error records first, and use Microsoft’s upgrade and installation guidance for the supported path: Get help with Windows upgrade and installation errors.

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025

Fixing the service error can restore the update process, but it cannot restore Microsoft’s former support lifecycle. Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Its support wording says: “After October 14, 2025, Microsoft will no longer provide free software updates from Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10.” Microsoft recommends moving to Windows 11 in its Windows upgrade and installation error guidance.

That date changes the decision after a repair: a working Windows Update service does not mean Windows 10 will continue receiving the free software and security updates it received before the end of support. If the PC can run Windows 11, migration planning is the long-term path; if it cannot, document the device’s support situation before relying on Windows 10 for ongoing security maintenance.
