Start with the built-in Windows Update troubleshooter, restart and check again, then repair system files with sfc /scannow. If the failure occurs while downloading an ISO or using the Media Creation Tool, download a fresh ISO or recreate the installation media instead of repeatedly retrying the same damaged download.
What error 0x80070057 means
The hexadecimal code 0x80070057 is documented by Microsoft as The parameter is incorrect. It is not a diagnosis of one single component. Windows can display the same code when an update package is damaged, when a required operation lacks permission, or when a system setting does not match what the installer expects.

Why the location of the failure matters
“Windows 10 download” can describe several different operations:
- Windows Update: the error appears in Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update while Windows downloads or installs an update.
- Media Creation Tool: the tool fails while downloading Windows files or preparing a bootable USB drive.
- ISO download or setup: an ISO download, mounting operation, or in-place upgrade stops with the code.
Use the Windows Update repairs only when the failure is in Windows Update. If the Media Creation Tool or an ISO download is the failing path, recreate the download or media as described later in this guide. Mixing the two paths can waste time and can leave an otherwise healthy update service unchanged.

Typical cause categories
Microsoft groups this error with three broad categories: corrupted files, permission issues, and incorrect system configuration. A partially downloaded update can remain in the local update cache and fail every subsequent attempt. A protected folder or service that cannot be accessed with the required rights can produce the same code. Configuration problems can also make a valid package look invalid to the installer. The code alone does not identify which category applies, so work from the lowest-risk repair to the more disruptive one.
Before changing anything
Confirm which operation failed
Read the screen that showed the code and note whether it was Windows Update, the Media Creation Tool, or an ISO/setup process. This determines which branch of the procedure applies. If Windows Update is the only place showing the code, begin with the troubleshooter. If a newly downloaded ISO or installation-media creation fails while normal updates work, go directly to the media branch.
Protect your work and use an administrator account
- Save open documents and close applications before restarting or repairing files.
- Keep a current backup of important personal data before resetting update components or starting an upgrade.
- Run commands from an elevated Command Prompt. A normal Command Prompt may report that the operation is not permitted.
- Do not delete the
C:WindowsSoftwareDistributionfolder itself. The cache procedure below stops the service first and clears the folder’s contents.
The troubleshooter and System File Checker are relatively low-risk. Stopping services and clearing a cache changes Windows Update’s local state, while recreating installation media changes the installation path. Choose the least disruptive action that matches the place where the error occurred.
Fix Windows Update error 0x80070057
1. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
Windows 10 includes a troubleshooter specifically for update failures. Follow this exact path:
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Open Update & Security.
- Select Troubleshoot in the left pane.
- Choose Additional troubleshooters.
- Select Windows Update, then choose Run the troubleshooter.
- Allow the scan to complete and apply any repair it offers.
- Restart the PC, even if the troubleshooter does not explicitly require it.
The restart is part of the repair sequence because a service or pending update state may not be refreshed until Windows starts again. After signing in, return to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and select Check for updates. If the update downloads and installs, no deeper reset is needed.
2. Repair protected Windows files with System File Checker
If the troubleshooter does not resolve the code, use Microsoft’s System File Checker procedure. It checks protected system files and repairs files it can replace from the local Windows component store.
- Open Start and type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter
sfc /scannowand press Enter. - Leave the window open until verification reaches 100 percent. Interrupting the scan can leave the repair incomplete.
- Restart Windows when the scan finishes.
- Return to Windows Update and select Check for updates again.
The scan’s result tells you how to proceed. A message that Windows Resource Protection found and repaired files indicates that a retry is appropriate after the restart. A message that no integrity violations were found means this particular repair did not find damaged protected files; continue to the update-cache procedure if the same code remains. If Windows reports that it could not perform the requested operation, verify that Command Prompt was opened as administrator, restart, and run the command once more before escalating.

A damaged or incomplete package in the update cache can be downloaded again after the cache is cleared. Microsoft’s Windows 10 guidance for this error includes stopping Windows Update, clearing the contents of C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution, starting the service, restarting the PC, and retrying the update.
- Save your work and close open programs.
- Open Command Prompt with Run as administrator.
- Stop the Windows Update service by entering
net stop wuauservand pressing Enter. Wait for confirmation that the service has stopped. - Open File Explorer and enter
C:WindowsSoftwareDistributionin the address bar. - Select the items inside that folder and delete them. Leave the
SoftwareDistributionfolder itself in place. If Windows says a file is in use, confirm that the Windows Update service really stopped; do not force-delete a locked file. - Return to the elevated Command Prompt and enter
net start wuauserv. - Restart the PC.
- Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
Windows will rebuild the cache as it needs it. The first retry can take longer because update files must be downloaded again. Clearing the cache removes local copies of update packages; it does not remove your personal documents, installed applications, or the Windows installation itself. Keep the administrator window open until the service-start confirmation appears.
4. Recheck permissions and configuration without making random changes
Permission and configuration problems are documented cause categories for 0x80070057, but the code does not identify a particular setting to change. Do not apply unrelated registry edits or delete system folders based only on the error number. First repeat the supported sequence—troubleshooter, restart, sfc /scannow, then the cache reset—and record exactly where the operation stops. If the failure began immediately after a policy, security product, or system-configuration change, undo only that known change through the same Windows settings or management tool that created it. Avoid changing several settings at once, because that removes the ability to tell which change helped or caused a new problem.

When the Media Creation Tool or ISO download fails
1. Treat a failed download as a media problem
If Windows Update works but the Media Creation Tool stops with 0x80070057, the Windows Update cache steps above target the wrong component. Microsoft’s Windows 10 upgrade procedures recommend downloading the ISO again or recreating installation media with the Media Creation Tool. A fresh download replaces an incomplete or corrupted source rather than repeatedly reusing it.

2. Download a fresh ISO
- Close the failed setup or download process.
- Start a new ISO download from Microsoft’s Windows 10 installation source rather than resuming the damaged file.
- Wait for the new download to finish before mounting it or starting setup.
- If the new ISO also fails, recreate the installation media with the Media Creation Tool instead of using the same ISO file.
Do not assume that a successful browser download proves the file is usable by setup. The relevant test is whether the fresh ISO mounts and the Windows installation process proceeds without the parameter error.
3. Recreate USB installation media
The Media Creation Tool can write user-created Windows installation media to a USB flash drive. The drive stores the media; purchasing or plugging in a drive does not repair 0x80070057 by itself. Use a drive that you are willing to erase, because creating installation media can remove existing contents from it. Copy any files you need from the drive before starting.
- Connect the USB flash drive and back up its contents elsewhere.
- Open the Media Creation Tool and choose the option to create installation media.
- Follow the tool’s prompts to select the Windows 10 language, edition, and architecture appropriate for the target PC.
- Choose the USB flash drive as the media destination and let the tool download Windows and write the media completely.
- When creation finishes, use the newly created media for the upgrade or installation instead of the failed download.
If the tool fails before it can write anything, try the fresh-ISO path. If it fails while preparing the USB, check that the correct removable drive is selected and that its existing contents have been backed up. Do not disconnect the drive while the tool is downloading or writing.
4. Distinguish an upgrade from a clean installation
Recreated media can support different installation choices. An in-place upgrade is intended to retain the existing Windows installation, applications, and personal files when the setup choices allow it. A clean installation is a separate, more destructive operation that can remove the existing system and data. Error 0x80070057 does not by itself tell you to erase the PC. If your goal is only to repair a failed upgrade download, use a fresh ISO or newly recreated media and select the upgrade path offered by setup; do not format partitions unless you have deliberately chosen a clean installation and have a verified backup.

| Where 0x80070057 appears | First action | Data risk | Repair depth | What success looks like |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Windows Update | Run the Windows Update troubleshooter, restart, then check for updates | Low; it diagnoses and applies supported update repairs | Basic service and configuration repair | The update downloads or installs normally |
| Windows Update after the troubleshooter | Run sfc /scannow, restart, and retry |
Low; protected-file repair is targeted | Repairs damaged Windows system files when possible | The scan repairs files or confirms system-file integrity, followed by a successful update retry |
| Windows Update with repeated download failure | Stop Windows Update, clear the contents of C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution, start the service, restart, and retry |
Moderate; cached update packages are removed and downloaded again | Rebuilds the local update-download path | Windows obtains a new package instead of reusing the failed cache |
| Media Creation Tool or ISO download | Download a fresh ISO or recreate installation media | Usually low for the PC, but a USB’s existing contents can be erased | Replaces the installation source rather than repairing Windows Update | The new ISO mounts or the new media completes setup |
| Long-term Windows 10 maintenance | Evaluate Windows 11 if the hardware supports it | Depends on the chosen upgrade and backup plan | Changes the supported operating-system target | You move to a platform that still receives the relevant support |
If the error still returns
Repeat only the matching branch
After each repair, retry the operation that originally failed. A successful SFC scan does not prove that a Media Creation Tool download is fixed, and a newly created USB does not repair a broken Windows Update cache. Keep the branches separate and note whether the code appears during downloading, verification, installation, or media creation.
Check the order and privileges
- Confirm that the troubleshooter was run from Additional troubleshooters > Windows Update, not merely that the Settings page was opened.
- Restarted before the second update check; pending service changes may not take effect until reboot.
- Opened Command Prompt with Run as administrator before running
sfc /scannowor stopping the service. - Stopped
wuauservbefore clearing the cache and started it again afterward. - Deleted only the contents of
C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution, not the parent folder or unrelated Windows directories. - Used a newly downloaded ISO or newly recreated media rather than repeatedly retrying the same failed file.
Know when to stop repeating the same attempt
If the same error appears after the complete supported sequence, repeating the identical download is unlikely to add information. Reconfirm the failure location, preserve the exact error text, and choose the other supported branch only if the evidence points there—for example, switch from Windows Update repair to fresh installation media when Windows Update succeeds but setup downloads fail. Do not treat the code as proof that your PC is infected or that a hardware replacement is required; neither conclusion follows from 0x80070057 alone.
Windows 10 support status changes the answer
Microsoft states: “After October 14, 2025, Microsoft will no longer provide free software updates from Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10.” That date has passed. Fixing the download error can restore the immediate installation process, but it does not extend Windows 10’s support life.
Once the failed update or upgrade is understood, check whether the computer can move to Windows 11 and whether your applications and files are ready for that change. If the hardware supports Windows 11, moving to it is the more sustainable update target. If it does not, keep a documented backup and make an informed decision about continued Windows 10 use rather than assuming that every future update will remain available.
Quick Recap
A concise recovery checklist
- Identify whether the code appears in Windows Update, the Media Creation Tool, or an ISO/setup process.
- For Windows Update, run Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters > Windows Update.
- Restart, then return to Windows Update and select Check for updates.
- If it fails again, run
sfc /scannowfrom an administrator Command Prompt, restart, and retry. - If the update cache is implicated, stop
wuauserv, clear the contents ofC:WindowsSoftwareDistribution, start the service, restart, and retry. - For a failed ISO or Media Creation Tool download, obtain a fresh ISO or recreate installation media. Back up USB contents first.
- After recovery, account for Windows 10 support ending on October 14, 2025, and evaluate Windows 11 where hardware supports it.
