If Windows Update will not install Windows 10 version 20H2, the most important fact is that 20H2 is no longer a supported target. Microsoft ended servicing for Home, Pro, Pro Education, Pro for Workstations and Team editions on May 10, 2022, and for Enterprise, Education and IoT Enterprise editions on May 9, 2023. Windows 10 itself stopped receiving free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance and security fixes on October 14, 2025. You can still troubleshoot a failed installation, but the durable solution in 2026 is to move to a supported Windows release if the computer is compatible.
The sequence below protects your files, checks the common causes, repairs a damaged update cache and interprets the most common error codes before you decide whether to migrate or reinstall.

Why Windows 10 20H2 will not install
Version 20H2 was a Windows 10 feature update, not a separate operating system. Its servicing window has closed. Microsoft says Windows 10 version 20H2 reached end of servicing on May 10, 2022 for Home, Pro, Pro Education, Pro for Workstations and Team editions, and on May 9, 2023 for Enterprise, Education and IoT Enterprise editions. Windows 10 version 22H2 was the final Windows 10 feature update, and its servicing also ended on October 14, 2025.

Windows Update cannot provide a supported long-term path through 20H2 now. Troubleshooting is still useful when you need to recover a partially updated computer, clear a persistent error or prepare for a supported upgrade.

Do not interpret a successful 20H2 installation as bringing the PC back into support. The support status depends on the Windows release and edition you are running after the change.
Back up your files before changing update components
Make a current copy of documents, photos, browser exports and other irreplaceable files before resetting services, deleting update-cache contents or starting an upgrade. Microsoft specifically advises backing up personal files before troubleshooting. Use a USB flash drive or another trusted backup destination; verify that important files open from the backup before continuing.
- Save work and close applications.
- Keep the computer connected to reliable power, especially during an upgrade.
- Record any encryption or recovery information you may need after a restart.
- Do not remove the backup until Windows starts normally and your files are confirmed.
Check the prerequisites first
Many update failures are caused by conditions that are easier to correct than the update itself. Confirm each item before resetting anything.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Internet: Use a stable connection. If a VPN or restrictive network is active, disconnect it temporarily for the update attempt, then reconnect it afterward.
- Administrator access: Sign in with an account that can approve system changes. An access-denied error often means the current account or security settings cannot modify update components.
- Free storage: Microsoft lists at least 16 GB free for a 32-bit upgrade and 20 GB free for a 64-bit upgrade. These are minimum figures from Microsoft’s 2026 guidance page; additional working space can be useful when Windows stages installation files.
- Edition and target: Open Settings > System > About to note the Windows edition, version and system type. Do not assume that an old 20H2 offer is the correct target for the computer.
Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter
The built-in troubleshooter is the least disruptive repair and should run before you delete cached files.
- Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
- Select Windows Update, then choose Run the troubleshooter.
- Allow the checks to finish and apply any suggested correction.
- Restart the computer when prompted, even if the troubleshooter reports that no change was necessary.
- After the restart, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
Note the exact message or hexadecimal code if the same failure returns. The code determines which branch to try next.
Reset a corrupted Windows Update cache
Windows stores downloaded update files and its working database in the SoftwareDistribution folder. If those files are incomplete or corrupted, Windows Update may repeatedly fail at the same percentage or display 0x8007000d. Microsoft documents clearing this cache for corruption cases.
- Press Windows key + R, type
services.msc, and press Enter. - In the Services window, locate Windows Update.
- Right-click it and choose Stop. Leave the Services window open.
- Open File Explorer and go to
C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution. - Delete the contents inside that folder. Do not delete the SoftwareDistribution folder itself. If Windows says a file is in use, confirm that the Windows Update service is stopped and close any File Explorer window showing the folder before trying again.
- Return to Services, right-click Windows Update and choose Start.
- Restart Windows, then return to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
Clearing the cache removes downloaded update working files; it does not delete your personal documents. Windows may need to download the update again, so keep the connection stable and allow extra time.
Use the error code to choose the next fix
Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > View update history or read the failure screen and write down the complete code. The following map ties each documented code to the appropriate check.

| Error code | Likely cause | Manual response |
|---|---|---|
| 0x8007000d | Windows Update files or cache may be corrupt. | Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter, then reset the SoftwareDistribution cache as described above. |
| 0x800f0922 | Insufficient free space or inability to reach update servers. | Meet the 16 GB (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit) minimum, check the connection, and temporarily remove VPN or network conditions that block Microsoft update servers. |
| 0x80248014 | Windows Update database problem or the service is not running. | In services.msc, verify that Windows Update is present and can be started. If its files are stale, perform the cache reset. |
| 0x80070005 | Access denied or insufficient permissions. | Use an administrator account, approve elevation prompts and check whether security software is preventing Windows Update from changing system files. |
| 0x80070020 | Another process is blocking Windows Update. | Restart Windows, then check antivirus or other background software that may be holding update files open. Retry with unnecessary applications closed. |
| 0xC1900202–0x20008 | The device may not meet minimum requirements for the upgrade. | Stop retrying the same package. Check Microsoft’s current compatibility guidance and evaluate a supported release that the hardware can run. |
An error code identifies a direction, not a guarantee of one cause. For example, 0x800f0922 can reflect storage or connectivity, so check both rather than changing only one setting.

Verify the Windows Update service
Open services.msc and locate Windows Update. A stopped service can explain 0x80248014. Start it, restart Windows and try Check for updates again. If the service stops immediately or cannot be started, record the message; repeated service failure points to a broader Windows problem rather than a simple download retry.
Retry with administrator access
For 0x80070005, sign out and use an administrator account, or ask the device administrator to run the update. Do not weaken security settings permanently to bypass the error. If security software is blocking a file operation, use its documented pause or allow procedure only long enough to test, then restore protection.

For 0x800f0922, 0x80070020 or a download that stops at the same percentage, disconnect a VPN, captive portal or unusual proxy and try a trusted network. A restart also clears processes that may have locked update files. If the update succeeds only on another network, the original connection or policy needs attention.
Decide whether repair or migration is the right path
Once the immediate error is understood, choose between another repair attempt and moving to a supported release. The choice depends on support status, hardware, data protection and server access.
| Consideration | Continue repairing the old 20H2 attempt | Move to a supported Windows release |
|---|---|---|
| Support status | 20H2 is out of servicing; a successful install does not restore support. | Uses Microsoft’s current software-download and compatibility guidance, subject to the release available for the device. |
| Hardware compatibility | Useful only when recovering an existing installation or completing a previously started change. | Requires checking whether the hardware meets the supported release’s requirements; 0xC1900202–0x20008 is a warning that it may not. |
| Data-preservation risk | Cache reset normally leaves personal files in place, but a backup is still required. | An upgrade or reinstall can affect applications and settings, so a verified backup must come first. |
| Disk space | At least 16 GB free for 32-bit or 20 GB for 64-bit, according to Microsoft’s guidance. | Also needs enough working space for the chosen installation method; check the current guidance for that release. |
| Update-server access | Still required to download packages and validate the attempt. | Required for online installation or activation steps; installation media can help when the existing cache is damaged, but it does not make unsupported hardware compatible. |
Move from Windows 10 to a supported release
Because Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, migration is the responsible endpoint for a compatible computer. Start with Microsoft’s current software-download and compatibility guidance rather than looking for an old 20H2 package.
- Back up personal files to a USB flash drive or another trusted destination.
- Check Settings > System > About for the edition, installed version and system type, and record applications or device settings you must restore.
- Use Microsoft’s current compatibility guidance to determine whether the computer can run a supported Windows release. If the hardware fails the requirements, do not force the upgrade.
- If the computer is compatible, follow the supported release’s installation instructions and keep the device connected to power and a stable network.
- After installation, open Windows Update, install available updates for the supported release and verify that personal files and required applications are present.
If the device cannot run a supported release, the 20H2 troubleshooting steps can restore the existing installation but cannot supply security fixes that Microsoft no longer provides for Windows 10. In that case, plan a hardware change or another supported operating system rather than repeatedly attempting an obsolete feature update.

A USB flash drive can serve as physical backup storage or hold installation media. Capacity requirements vary with the amount of data you are backing up and the installation method, so choose a drive with enough room for your specific files and verify the copy. Keep the backup separate from the computer while you troubleshoot; deleting update-cache files does not replace a personal backup.
