1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRun Microsoft’s repair sequence before downloading anything: open an elevated Command Prompt or Windows Terminal, run DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth, then run sfc /scannow. Restart Windows and test the application again. A wer.dll message usually indicates a damaged Windows component or an application dependency, not a DLL that should be replaced with a random download.
What wer.dll is and why the error appears
wer.dll is associated with Windows Error Reporting (WER), the Windows subsystem that creates and handles reports when applications or system components fail. WER also supports report files, exclusions and organization-controlled report destinations. Because it is part of Windows’ reporting infrastructure, an error mentioning wer.dll can appear when Windows files are missing or corrupted, when the component store is damaged, or when a particular application has a broken dependency.

The filename alone does not identify the root cause. The complete message, the application that displays it, your Windows version and the point at which the failure occurs all matter. “The program can’t start because wer.dll is missing,” an application crash that names wer.dll, and a repair tool reporting a component failure can require different follow-up steps even though they mention the same file.

Microsoft’s published repair guidance does not direct users to a standalone wer.dll download. The supported approach repairs the Windows image and then verifies protected system files. That process can restore a valid copy from Windows’ own repair sources while preserving the relationship between the file, its servicing metadata and the rest of the operating system.

Is it safe to download wer.dll from a DLL website?
Do not begin by copying a wer.dll file from an unverified download site. A replacement can be the wrong Windows build, edition, architecture or language. It can also be altered, and placing it in the wrong folder may create a second problem while leaving the underlying component-store damage untouched. Even a genuine file from another Windows release may not match the files and servicing records on your installation.
DISM and SFC use Microsoft-supplied repair files and check the Windows installation as a system rather than treating wer.dll as an isolated object. If a repair source is required, use matching Windows installation media or another source that corresponds to the installed version. Keep any downloaded file quarantined until you have established that it came from a trustworthy, matching source; do not overwrite a system file merely because its name looks right.
Prepare before running repairs
Capture the exact context
- Write down the complete error text, including any error code, and note the application that fails.
- Record whether the message appears at startup, when opening one program, after an update, or during a particular task.
- Check whether the affected program is 32-bit or 64-bit if its documentation provides that information. Architecture mismatches are one reason an arbitrary DLL replacement can fail.
Use an administrator account
DISM and SFC modify or verify protected Windows resources. Sign in with an account that can approve administrator prompts. Close applications before starting, and save work because the eventual restart is part of the repair process.

The commands below are designed to repair Windows rather than remove personal files, but any system repair is a reason to ensure current copies of important documents exist. If the computer is unstable, copy essential data to another drive before escalating to recovery or reinstallation.
Run DISM, then SFC
Run the commands in this order. DISM repairs the Windows image and component store that SFC uses as a source. Microsoft states that “DISM provides the files required to repair your corrupted files.” After DISM completes, SFC checks protected files and replaces damaged copies when a valid cached copy is available.
1. Open an elevated terminal
- Open the Start menu and type Command Prompt or Windows Terminal.
- Right-click the result and choose Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks whether to allow the app to make changes.
The title bar should indicate an administrator session. A non-elevated window can return an access-denied message or fail to repair protected files.
2. Repair the Windows image with DISM
At the prompt, enter this command exactly:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
/Online targets the Windows installation that is currently running. /Cleanup-image tells DISM to service the component store, and /Restorehealth asks it to detect corruption and repair it. Allow the operation to finish. The percentage may pause for an extended period; do not close the window merely because progress appears unchanged.

DISM normally obtains repair files through Windows Update. A successful completion message means the image repair operation finished; it does not by itself prove that the application that displayed the wer.dll message will now run. Continue to SFC even when DISM reports that no corruption was found, because the protected-file scan is a separate check.
3. Verify protected files with SFC
In the same administrator window, run:
sfc /scannow
Microsoft describes this command as scanning all protected system files and replacing corrupted files with a cached copy. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Interrupting the scan can leave the verification incomplete and make its result difficult to interpret.
4. Restart and retest
- Close the terminal after SFC reports its result.
- Restart Windows normally.
- Open the application that produced the wer.dll message and repeat the action that previously failed.
A restart loads repaired components and clears processes that may still hold an old copy in memory. If the program starts normally, no manual DLL replacement is needed.
What the DISM and SFC results mean
| Result | Meaning | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| DISM completes successfully and SFC reports no integrity violations | The standard image and protected-file checks found no remaining corruption. | Restart, retest the application, and investigate application-specific causes if it still fails. |
| SFC found corrupt files and repaired them | Protected files were replaced using the available Windows repair source. | Restart and test the affected program again. |
| SFC found files it could not repair | The scan identified a problem but could not obtain or apply a valid replacement. | Review the CBS log, then use a matching repair source or Windows recovery. |
| DISM cannot find source files | Windows Update or the local component store cannot provide the required files. | Supply matching installation media or another documented source, then rerun DISM. |
| The commands complete but one application still fails | Windows may be healthy while the application, its files or its own dependencies remain damaged. | Use the application’s repair or reinstall option and check its publisher’s requirements. |
Use a matching repair source when Windows Update cannot help
DISM normally contacts Windows Update. If that service is unavailable, the computer is offline, or the component store itself is too damaged, Microsoft documents alternate sources: a matching Windows installation, a network share, removable installation media or a Windows DVD.

- Use media for the same Windows generation and a compatible build, edition and architecture as the installed system.
- Do not assume that any Windows 10 or Windows 11 image is interchangeable. A mismatch can leave DISM without the files it needs or introduce a servicing inconsistency.
- If the source is on removable media, connect it before opening the elevated terminal and note its drive letter.
Run DISM with the documented source syntax
Microsoft gives this form as an example, with the path changed to the location of the matching repair files:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
/Source identifies the Windows folder that contains the repair files. /LimitAccess prevents DISM from attempting to use Windows Update, so the command relies on the source you supplied. Replace C:RepairSourceWindows only with a real, matching path; it is an example path, not a folder that necessarily exists on your computer.
After DISM finishes with the alternate source, run sfc /scannow again in the same administrator window. Restart Windows and test the application. If the source is rejected, stop rather than mixing files from another release; obtain media that matches the installed Windows build.

Read the CBS log when SFC cannot repair a file
SFC records servicing details in the Component Based Servicing log, commonly called the CBS log. When SFC says it could not repair one or more files, the log can identify the exact path and file names involved. That information distinguishes a wer.dll-related Windows problem from an unrelated protected file that happened to fail the scan.
Use the log to narrow the problem
- Note the time at which you ran SFC so the newest entries are easy to separate from older servicing activity.
- Search the CBS log for entries describing files that could not be repaired.
- Check whether the named file is actually wer.dll or another component. Do not assume every SFC failure concerns the file shown in the application popup.
Microsoft describes taking ownership and replacing only an identified file with a known-good copy from the same Windows version when supported repairs leave a specific file unresolved. This is an advanced operation: the replacement must match the installed release, and changing a file that has not been identified can make servicing harder. If you cannot verify the file and source, proceed to Windows recovery instead of copying a random DLL.
Check the disk and remove repair interference
Check disk integrity
Microsoft’s update-troubleshooting guidance includes checking the system volume with:
chkdsk /f C:
Because the system drive is normally in use, Windows may schedule the check for the next restart and ask for confirmation. Accept the schedule only when you can allow the computer to reboot and complete the disk check. A disk problem can prevent Windows from reading or writing repaired components reliably; it should be addressed before repeatedly running SFC.
Try a clean restart when software interferes
Background update agents, security software and startup utilities can interfere with servicing. Microsoft recommends using a clean restart when update or repair interference is suspected. A clean restart starts Windows with a reduced set of startup programs and services, allowing you to determine whether another process is blocking the repair. Restore normal startup settings after testing so routine protection and utilities run again.
When the failure belongs to one application
If DISM and SFC complete successfully but only one program still reports wer.dll, treat the application as a separate suspect. Confirm that other programs launch, install the application’s latest supported update, and use its built-in Repair or Reset option when available. If the publisher supplies an uninstaller, remove the program, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the publisher’s official distribution channel.
Do not copy wer.dll into an application folder as a first-line fix. Some programs use private libraries, and forcing a system DLL into that folder can create a version conflict. If the application requires a particular runtime or architecture, follow its documented prerequisites rather than substituting a file with the same name.

When DISM cannot repair the component store, SFC cannot replace identified files, and matching media does not resolve the problem, Microsoft recommends Windows recovery or reinstalling Windows as the final escalation. Choose the least destructive recovery option that addresses the condition and read each screen carefully.
Understand the preservation trade-off
| Option | What it addresses | Preservation considerations |
|---|---|---|
| DISM plus SFC | Windows image, component store and protected system files. | Designed to repair the existing installation without targeting personal files or installed applications. |
| Matching installation media as a DISM source | Missing repair files when Windows Update or the local store cannot supply them. | Requires compatible edition, build and architecture; it is still a repair of the current installation. |
| Windows recovery | Deeper system damage that supported servicing cannot correct. | Available choices differ; read whether apps, settings or personal files will be removed before confirming. |
| Windows reinstallation | A severely damaged installation that cannot be repaired in place. | Some reinstall paths preserve apps and personal files while others do not. Back up data and verify the selected path before proceeding. |
A Windows 11 installation USB or other Windows repair installation media can serve as the removable source Microsoft documents for DISM. No particular seller or download listing is required; the important properties are authenticity and a match for the installed Windows release.
Common wer.dll scenarios and the right branch
The message appears during Windows startup
Record whether the message names a startup program. Run DISM and SFC first. If Windows starts but the popup returns, use a clean restart to identify the startup item, then repair or remove that application through its normal settings.
The message appears only when opening one program
Complete the Windows checks, then focus on that program’s repair, update or reinstall procedure. The isolated symptom does not prove that wer.dll itself is missing from Windows.
The computer recently lost power or froze
Run chkdsk /f C: when you can allow a restart, then repeat DISM and SFC. File-system damage can make a system component appear missing even when the original failure was broader.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →DISM repeatedly stops at the same point
Leave the operation running long enough to finish, confirm administrator rights and check Windows Update connectivity. If DISM reports that source files cannot be found, switch to matching installation media rather than retrying an unavailable source indefinitely.
SFC repairs files but the error returns
Restart after the scan and test again. If the same file is corrupted repeatedly, inspect the CBS log and check disk integrity. Persistent recurrence can require recovery or reinstallation rather than another copy of wer.dll.
How to avoid making the problem worse
- Do not use a DLL-download site as a substitute for Windows servicing.
- Do not replace a system file until the CBS log identifies that exact file and you have a known-good copy from the same Windows version.
- Do not mix repair media from a different edition, build or architecture.
- Do not interrupt DISM or SFC while they are processing.
- Keep a current backup before recovery or reinstallation.
- Preserve the original error text so an application publisher or support technician can distinguish a Windows component failure from an application dependency problem.
WER’s role explains why the filename can appear in many different crash contexts: it is part of Windows Error Reporting, not a guarantee that the reporting subsystem caused the original application failure. The full message and the repair results determine whether the next step is Windows recovery, an application repair or a disk investigation.
