How to Fix Websites That Stop Working With Edge Enhanced Security

If a site broke after you enabled Microsoft Edge Enhanced Security Mode, first create a per-site exception rather than disabling protection everywhere. On the broken page, select the site-information icon to the left of the address bar, open the enhanced-security entry, turn off Use enhanced security for this site, and reload. Edge adds that site to the exception list while keeping enhanced security active on other sites.

If the exception does not restore the page, check whether the site depends on WebAssembly, whether your device is 32-bit, and whether a work or school policy has locked the setting. The sections below show how to identify each case and how to troubleshoot failures that have another cause.

What Edge Enhanced Security changes

Enhanced Security Mode reduces the browser’s attack surface by disabling just-in-time (JIT) JavaScript compilation and enabling additional operating-system protections. Those mitigations make some exploit techniques harder to use, but they also change the JavaScript environment that a website receives.

Microsoft warns that “Some parts of a website you visit might not work due to compatibility issues when this feature is turned on.” A site can therefore load its basic page while a login flow, editor, payment screen, video control, file picker, or other interactive component fails.

Why a page can look normal while a feature is broken

Most websites combine ordinary HTML with JavaScript libraries, WebAssembly modules, workers, and browser APIs. Enhanced mode can expose assumptions made by older libraries or by code that was tested only with the normal JIT-enabled runtime. The visible symptom might be a blank panel, a button that does nothing, a repeated reload, a sign-in loop, a frozen canvas, or an error shown only in the browser console.

An exception is useful because it tests this specific cause without changing Edge’s behavior on every other site. If the failed function works immediately after the exception and reload, enhanced security was a likely contributor. If nothing changes, continue with the general troubleshooting sequence later in this article.

Fastest fix: add an exception from the broken page

Use this method when one known site stopped working and you want the smallest possible security change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Keep the broken site open in the active Edge tab.
  2. Select the site-information icon (the lock or equivalent icon) immediately to the left of the address bar.
  3. Open Enhance security for this site, or the enhanced-security status entry if Edge uses that wording in your version.
  4. Turn Use enhanced security for this site off.
  5. Reload the page. If the page has a separate sign-in or application URL, retry the exact action that failed.

Turning enhanced security off in this flyout automatically places the website on Edge’s exception list. Enhanced security remains available for sites that are not on that list, so this is less disruptive than switching the feature off globally.

Check that you changed the right origin

Exceptions are tied to a site address. A service may use separate origins for its main page, authentication, document editor, and file storage. If the main page works but an embedded application still fails, inspect the address shown when that component opens and add only the additional origin that needs the exception. Do not use a broad domain or an entire category of sites when a narrower address is sufficient.

Add or edit a persistent exception in Settings

The Settings list is useful when you need to review several exceptions, add one before visiting a site, or remove an exception after the site has been fixed.

  1. Select Settings and more (the three-dot menu) in Edge.
  2. Choose Settings.
  3. Open Privacy, search, and services.
  4. Scroll to Security and confirm that Enhance your security on the web is turned on. The exception list is not available as a working control when the overall feature is off.
  5. Open Site preferences for enhanced security. In some Microsoft enterprise documentation this area is labeled Manage enhanced security for sites.
  6. Under Never use enhanced security for these sites, select Add site.
  7. Enter the site’s full URL and select Add.

Use the narrowest URL that resolves the compatibility problem. If a site works at its main address but not at a separate application address, add the application address rather than exempting every subdomain. Edge lets you edit or remove entries from this same list.

When to remove an exception

Exceptions are not permanent compatibility guarantees. A site may update its scripts, or an Edge update may restore compatibility. Revisit the list periodically and remove entries you no longer need. Removing an exception returns that site to the enhanced-security behavior selected by your current mode.

Choose Balanced or Strict mode deliberately

The mode determines how much of your browsing starts in enhanced security and how many exceptions you may have to maintain.

Mode Default scope Compatibility impact Best fit Ongoing work
Balanced Added protections focus mainly on unfamiliar or infrequently visited sites; frequently visited sites are left out of enhanced mode in many cases. Usually lower disruption for everyday browsing, while new or less familiar sites receive additional protection. Typical personal devices and people who want a practical security/compatibility compromise. Add an exception when a particular site still fails.
Strict Enhanced protections apply to all sites by default. More sites can require configuration, especially older applications and complex web tools. Users who explicitly accept maintaining exceptions in exchange for broader default protection. Expect to manage exceptions for ordinary tasks when compatibility issues appear.

Microsoft states that Strict mode is not recommended for most users because it can require configuration to complete daily tasks. If you are troubleshooting a normal personal setup, Balanced is the sensible starting point. Strict is a conscious choice for someone who understands the compatibility cost and is willing to maintain a carefully limited exception list.

Switching modes versus exempting one site

Changing from Strict to Balanced changes the default behavior for every site. A single-site exception changes only the origin you specify. Use the exception when one application is affected; consider a mode change only when many unrelated sites need exemptions and you have decided that the broader behavior is appropriate.

WebAssembly sites and 32-bit systems

WebAssembly (WASM) applications deserve a separate check because Microsoft documents a platform-specific limitation. Sites using WASM are not supported on 32-bit systems when EnhanceSecurityMode is enabled. Microsoft recommends adding such a site to the exception list.

Enhanced mode supports WASM on x64 Windows, x64 macOS, x64 Linux, and ARM64 systems. The operating-system architecture matters independently of the website: an application can be compatible with enhanced mode on a supported 64-bit or ARM64 device but fail on a 32-bit installation.

How to recognize a WASM dependency

  • The site is a browser-based desktop application, 3D viewer, game, CAD tool, audio workstation, scientific model, or other high-performance interface.
  • The page shell loads, but the main workspace remains blank or reports that a module could not initialize.
  • The service’s own support documentation says it requires WebAssembly or a modern 64-bit browser environment.

On a 32-bit system, make a per-site exception first. If the application still fails, the device architecture may be the limiting factor rather than the Edge setting alone. On a supported 64-bit or ARM64 system, an exception is still a useful diagnostic step, but it does not prove that WASM is the cause.

When the exception control is missing, locked, or keeps returning

Work and school devices can receive Edge settings from an administrator. In that situation, local changes may be unavailable, may appear greyed out, or may be undone the next time policy refreshes.

Policies that control enhanced security

The EnhanceSecurityMode policy supports three states:

  • StandardMode: enhanced mode is off.
  • BalancedMode: Edge uses the balanced behavior.
  • StrictMode: Edge applies enhanced protection to all sites by default.

A related EnhanceSecurityModeAllowUserBypass policy controls whether users may bypass enhanced security for an individual site. An administrator can therefore allow the feature while preventing personal exceptions, or enforce a mode that users cannot change.

What to do on a managed device

  1. Confirm that the device is signed in to a work or school account or otherwise managed by your organization.
  2. Note the exact site, URL, failed function, Edge version, and whether the failure affects other browsers.
  3. Send those details to your help desk or administrator and ask them to review EnhanceSecurityMode and EnhanceSecurityModeAllowUserBypass.
  4. Do not repeatedly edit local settings if the policy is enforced; the next policy refresh will simply restore the administrator’s configuration.

An administrator may choose to permit a narrow exception, change the mode for a device group, or ask the site owner to update incompatible code. The right choice depends on the organization’s security requirements and whether the application is business-critical.

If the exception does not fix the site

An exception shows only that enhanced security was one possible cause. Use this order so that each step rules out a different failure source without discarding useful evidence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Update Edge. Open Edge’s three-dot menu, go to Help and feedback, and choose About Microsoft Edge. Allow any available update to finish, restart Edge, and test the site again. A recent browser update can include compatibility fixes, while a recent break can also be related to another change introduced in that version.
  2. Clear cached images and files. In Edge Settings, open the privacy and browsing-data controls, select cached images and files, and clear them. Keep other data categories unchecked unless you intentionally want to remove them. Reload the site and sign in again if required.
  3. Disable extensions temporarily. Turn off extensions, especially content blockers, script controls, privacy tools, password helpers, and security add-ons. Test the site in a fresh window. Re-enable extensions one at a time to identify a conflict.
  4. Restart Edge. Close all Edge windows, wait briefly, and reopen the browser. A full restart clears processes that a normal tab reload can leave running.
  5. Check network and security software. Test another network if possible. Review firewall, antivirus, web-filtering, proxy, and DNS-security settings for blocked scripts, downloads, certificates, or WebSocket connections. Apply changes only if you understand the security consequences or your administrator directs you to do so.
  6. Test another browser. If the same URL and function fail in another current browser, the problem is less likely to be specific to Edge Enhanced Security. If it works elsewhere, record the difference for the site owner or administrator.
  7. Use Edge’s repair option when appropriate. In Windows installed-app settings, select Microsoft Edge and choose the available repair action. Follow the prompts, then restart the browser and retest. Repair availability and wording can vary by Windows edition and management policy.
  8. Check the installed Edge version against recent changes. Microsoft maintains a reference for compatibility-impacting changes unrelated to Enhanced Security Mode. If the failure began immediately after an update, compare the timing before assuming the security feature is responsible.

If the page fails in every browser and on more than one network, contact the site owner or investigate the service itself. The site may be down, its certificate may be invalid, an API may be failing, or an account may lack permission. An Edge exception cannot correct those conditions.

Diagnose common symptoms without weakening protection unnecessarily

Symptom First check Likely next action
The page loads, but one button or editor does nothing. Try the per-site exception and reload. If it works, keep the narrow exception and report the compatibility issue to the site owner.
A high-performance app shows a blank workspace or module error. Check whether it uses WASM and whether the system is 32-bit. On 32-bit systems, exempt the site; on supported systems, continue with extension, cache, and update checks.
The enhanced-security menu is absent or greyed out. Determine whether the device is managed. Ask the administrator to review the two enhanced-security policies.
The exception works briefly, then disappears. Look for policy enforcement or a synchronization reset. Have the administrator confirm whether user bypass is permitted.
The site fails after an Edge update even with enhanced security off. Compare the failure in another browser and check the installed version. Investigate the update’s other compatibility changes, extensions, cache, and the site’s own service status.

Security trade-offs of each remedy

Every workaround changes either scope or protection. A page-level exception has the smallest scope: one site leaves enhanced mode while other sites continue using it. A Settings exception has the same security scope but is easier to audit and remove. Switching from Strict to Balanced changes defaults for many sites, so it can reduce the number of compatibility incidents while also reducing how often unfamiliar sites receive the strongest behavior. Turning Enhance your security on the web off globally removes enhanced mode from all sites and should be reserved for deliberate troubleshooting or environments where another control provides the needed protection.

When deciding, use five questions:

  • Scope: Is one origin affected, or do many unrelated sites fail?
  • Security exposure: Can enhanced mode remain active everywhere else?
  • Administrative control: Are you allowed to change the setting?
  • Compatibility need: Does the application require ordinary JavaScript behavior, legacy code, or WASM?
  • Reversibility: Can you remove the exception after the site is updated?

For most personal devices, the sequence is straightforward: remain in Balanced mode, add a narrow exception for a verified compatibility problem, and remove it when the site works normally again.

Verify and maintain the fix

After making a change, test the exact workflow that originally failed rather than only checking that the home page appears. For a business application, verify sign-in, navigation, data loading, saving, printing, downloads, and any browser integrations that matter to your work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Record the site’s exact URL and the feature that required the exception.
  • Confirm that enhanced security remains enabled globally if that is your intended configuration.
  • Review the exception list after Edge and site updates.
  • Remove entries that no longer have a demonstrated compatibility need.
  • On managed devices, document the result for the administrator instead of trying to defeat an enforced policy.

This approach preserves enhanced protection for the broadest practical set of sites while giving a known-incompatible application a controlled path to work.
