WebBrowser.dll is not a single, universal Windows file. Different software vendors use that filename for different binaries, versions, architectures and dependencies. The safe fix is therefore to identify the program that displayed the error and repair that program from its official installer. Do not download a generic WebBrowser.dll or copy one from another PC.
What WebBrowser.dll is—and why the filename is not enough
A DLL is a library that another program loads when it needs specific functions. The name WebBrowser.dll sounds like a Windows component, but the same name is used by unrelated applications. Public file inventories list versions associated with medical software, media applications, games and security products. Those files can have different publishers, hashes, CPU architectures, dependencies and installation folders.

That means a message such as “WebBrowser.dll was not found,” “WebBrowser.dll is missing,” or “The procedure entry point could not be located in WebBrowser.dll” identifies a loading problem, not the correct replacement file. The application that requested the DLL is the important clue.
Bravura Security’s Login Assistant illustrates the distinction. Its own lowercase webbrowser.dll is shipped with runurl/Login Assistant, helps control a kiosk browser and depends on Internet Explorer components. A file with the same spelling from a game or another utility is not an equivalent substitute. Installing the wrong build can leave the original error unresolved, cause a new compatibility failure or introduce an untrusted binary.

First, capture the details that identify the correct repair
Before changing files, preserve the complete error and record the context. Take a screenshot or copy the text into a note. Then check:
- Host program: the application name, executable name or installer that appears in the message.
- Path: the folder Windows reports, such as the program’s own installation directory.
- Timing: whether the message appears at startup, when opening a document, after an update, when visiting a site or only when a particular feature is used.
- Architecture: whether the affected application is 32-bit or 64-bit. A 32-bit program normally needs its matching library even on 64-bit Windows.
- Recent changes: an application update, Windows update, uninstall, disk cleanup, restore operation or security-policy change.
Use the executable and product version to search the publisher’s official support documentation. Search for the exact error text together with the product name; searching for only “WebBrowser.dll download” discards the most useful information.
Choose a repair path by ownership, scope and trust
| Situation | Most appropriate first action | Why |
|---|---|---|
| One named application fails and the error points to its folder | Repair or reinstall that application from its official installer | The application vendor can restore the matching version, architecture, dependencies and signing information. |
| Several built-in Windows applications or features fail | Install Windows updates, restart, then use Microsoft’s system-file and recovery tools | A wider pattern suggests Windows component or startup corruption rather than one application DLL. |
| Microsoft Edge itself fails | Update Edge, clear browsing data, check security and network settings, restart, then use Edge’s Repair option if shown | Edge has a supported repair path; replacing a DLL manually is not an Edge repair method. |
| A legacy website requires Internet Explorer behavior | Open it in Internet Explorer mode in Microsoft Edge | Internet Explorer 11 was retired and went out of support on June 15, 2022. |
| An IE-mode add-on or ActiveX control will not install | Check the control’s signature and your organization’s policy | Unsigned, expired or otherwise untrusted controls can be blocked. |
This decision uses five tests: who supplied the file, whether the failure affects one program or Windows broadly, whether 32-bit or 64-bit compatibility matters, whether the source is trusted, and whether the proposed change is reversible. Repairing or reinstalling the owning application is safer and easier to undo than replacing a library by hand.

Fix a missing WebBrowser.dll for one application
1. Close the affected program
Exit the application and any launcher, updater or helper process associated with it. If it remains open, Windows may keep the damaged library locked or immediately recreate the same failure. Restart Windows if the program will not close normally.
2. Find the publisher’s repair or installer option
Look in the application’s own Help or Settings menu for Repair, Check for updates or Reinstall. If no repair option exists, download the installer from the product’s official publisher site or use the original installation media. Match the exact product edition and version when the publisher provides separate packages.
Do not uninstall first if the installer offers a repair operation or if you need to preserve settings and licensing information. If a clean reinstall is required, export the application’s settings or data according to its documentation, record any activation information, uninstall it through Windows, restart, and install the official package again.
3. Let the installer restore every dependency
A DLL can depend on other libraries, registry entries, browser components or runtime packages. Replacing only one file may produce a different error, such as an entry-point failure or another missing dependency. An official repair or reinstall can restore the complete set that the vendor tested together.
Recommended Free Tools
For products that use legacy browser technology, read the vendor’s requirements carefully. Bravura’s Login Assistant, for example, documents a dependency on Internet Explorer components. That is a product-specific requirement, not proof that every WebBrowser.dll needs Internet Explorer.
4. Restart and test the same action
After repair or installation, restart Windows before testing. Reopen the same program and repeat the action that triggered the message. If the error returns, save the new wording and path. A changed message often reveals that the original missing file was only the first dependency or that the installed architecture does not match the application.
Why downloading a “WebBrowser.dll” file is unsafe
Generic DLL download pages cannot reliably tell you which vendor build your application expects. Even when a downloaded file loads, it may have the wrong publisher, version, architecture, exported functions or dependencies. It may also be modified or bundled with unwanted code. A file that merely has the right filename is not evidence that it is authentic.
Copying the file from another computer has the same problem. Two PCs can have different application releases, processor architectures, patches and installation paths. The other computer may also have a damaged or untrusted copy. Keep the original error and use the application’s official installer instead.
If you already downloaded an unknown DLL, do not place it in the application folder or in a Windows system directory. Delete it, run your normal security checks, and reinstall the affected application from a trusted source. If you copied it into a folder, remove it only through the application’s repair or uninstall process when possible; deleting a file that belongs to another program can create a second failure.

When Windows itself may be involved
Install updates and restart
Microsoft’s Windows troubleshooting sequence begins with checking for available updates and restarting. Open Settings, choose Windows Update (on Windows 11) or Update & Security > Windows Update (on Windows 10), select Check for updates, install applicable updates, and restart. The labels can differ on Windows 8 and Windows 7, which are older supported targets for some third-party applications but no longer receive the same current Windows support as Windows 10 and 11.
Test the application again after the restart. If only one third-party program still fails, return to that program’s official repair path rather than replacing a Windows DLL.
Check system files when multiple Windows components fail
If several built-in applications, Windows features or startup functions are failing, use an elevated Windows Terminal, Command Prompt or PowerShell window. Open Start, type cmd, right-click Command Prompt, choose Run as administrator, and approve the prompt. Run:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealthsfc /scannow
Allow each command to finish. DISM checks and repairs the Windows component store that supplies system files; System File Checker then checks protected files against that repaired store. Restart when prompted or when both commands complete, and test the affected Windows function. These commands address Windows corruption; they do not identify or replace an application vendor’s private WebBrowser.dll.
Use Automatic Repair for startup or registry symptoms
If the problem includes boot failures, repeated startup repair screens, or a Windows installation that cannot start normally, use Microsoft’s recovery environment rather than downloading individual DLLs. In Windows 11 or 10, open Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now (Windows 10 may show Settings > Update & Security > Recovery), then choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair. You can also reach the recovery environment from Windows installation or recovery media.
Automatic Repair is designed for certain startup and registry problems. It is not a guarantee that an application-specific WebBrowser.dll will be restored. If Windows starts but only one program fails, repair that program instead.

- Open Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Clear browsing data. Clear the data relevant to the failure, noting that clearing cookies can sign you out of sites.
- Check security software, firewall rules and network settings that could block Edge or its components. Do not weaken security permanently; involve an administrator on a managed PC.
- Restart Windows and test Edge again.
- If Windows exposes it, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Microsoft Edge > Modify, then choose Repair. The exact label and availability depend on the Windows and Edge build.
Do not download a file named WebBrowser.dll and place it in Edge’s folders. Edge updates and its Repair option are the supported way to restore its installation.
Handle old websites with Edge IE mode
Internet Explorer 11 was retired and went out of support on June 15, 2022. A legacy website that relied on Internet Explorer behavior should be opened in Internet Explorer mode in Microsoft Edge, not by trying to revive Internet Explorer DLLs.
On a supported Edge installation, an administrator can enable Internet Explorer mode in Settings > Default browser by allowing sites to be reloaded in IE mode. When the option is available, open the site, select the three-dot menu, choose Reload in Internet Explorer mode, and follow any site-list or restart requirement. Work or school computers may hide these controls because an organization manages the policy. In that case, ask the administrator to add the site to the approved enterprise mode list rather than changing policy files yourself.
When IE-mode add-ons or ActiveX controls fail
Internet Explorer mode can still be blocked by security policy or by the control itself. Microsoft states that Windows and Internet Explorer require ActiveX controls and add-ons to carry a valid digital signature from a trusted publisher. Unsigned, expired or untrusted certificates can prevent installation.

Common symptoms and what they indicate
| Symptom | Likely interpretation | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| One game, utility or business application reports the file at startup | The application’s private DLL is missing, damaged or incompatible | Repair or reinstall that exact product and version. |
| The message names a folder outside Windows system directories | The file probably belongs to the program installed in that folder | Use that publisher’s installer; do not copy a system DLL into it. |
| Several Windows apps fail after an update or abrupt shutdown | Windows component corruption is possible | Update, restart, run DISM and SFC, then consider Automatic Repair. |
| Only an old website or browser plug-in fails | Legacy Internet Explorer behavior, an add-on signature or policy may be involved | Use Edge IE mode and verify signatures and policy. |
| The error changes to an entry-point or architecture message after copying a DLL | The replacement does not match the application’s expected build | Undo the manual replacement through official repair or reinstall. |
What to provide when contacting support
Support can diagnose this problem faster when you provide the complete error text, a screenshot showing the path, the application name and version, Windows edition and build, whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit, and the time the error began. Include what changed immediately beforehand and whether reinstalling from the official installer altered the message. Do not email an unknown DLL as a proposed fix; provide the filename and path so the publisher can supply the correct package.
