Check that your hardware matches the settings you are trying to run, verify the game files if it crashes or will not start, then test driver and graphics-setting changes one at a time. No single tweak is a confirmed fix for every PC or symptom.
Record what happens before changing anything
A short baseline helps distinguish a hardware limit from a crash or a setting-specific problem. Note your CPU, graphics card, RAM, Windows version, graphics-driver version, and whether you launch through Ubisoft Connect, Steam, or Epic. Also record DirectX 11 or 12, resolution, preset, ray tracing and upscaling settings, and approximate average FPS.

Describe when the fault occurs: on launch, during a particular scene, after playing for a while, or only when performance dips. Record any error text, whether the whole PC freezes or only the game closes, and whether the issue began after a driver or game update. Change one thing at a time and check whether the symptom changes.

Ubisoft’s October 12, 2020 PC specifications split recommendations by target: 1080p low, 1080p high, 1440p high, 4K ultra, and ray tracing. The low-tier minimum is not a promise of smooth performance at higher resolutions or with ray tracing. Compare your system to the tier closest to the settings you want, rather than treating one minimum specification as a universal performance target. Ubisoft’s 2020 PC specifications list, for example, an Intel Core i5-4460 or AMD Ryzen 5 1400, GTX 970/GTX 1650 or Radeon R9 290X, 4 GB video memory, 8 GB dual-channel RAM, and 45 GB storage for the ray-tracing-disabled 1080p low minimum configuration. For ray-tracing-disabled 1440p high, the same article recommends an Intel Core i7-9700 or Ryzen 5 3600, RTX 2060 Super, 8 GB video memory, 16 GB dual-channel RAM, and 45 GB storage. These are dated 2020 configurations, not current buying advice or measured FPS guarantees.

Storage figures also differ by source and date. Ubisoft’s 2020 article gives 45 GB for its listed configurations and 45 GB plus a 20 GB HD texture pack for 4K ultra; the Ubisoft Store page consulted October 7, 2026 lists 80 GB. Check the current listing for your storefront and installed edition instead of combining the figures into one timeless requirement. The current Ubisoft game page lists Windows 10 and Windows 11. Verify game files if it crashes or will not start
File verification is a supported first check for a failed launch or crash. In Ubisoft Connect PC, open Library, select Watch Dogs: Legion, choose the gear icon beside Play, and select Verify files. Ubisoft documents this procedure in Verifying game files in Ubisoft Connect PC. If you own the game through Steam or Epic, use that launcher’s file-verification feature instead.

Update the graphics driver, matching the fix to the issue
Install a suitable current driver for your specific graphics card using the graphics vendor’s support channel, then restart Windows and test again. A driver update is a diagnostic step, not a guaranteed cure for every crash or low-FPS problem.
Specific case: Intel Iris Plus red-black corruption in DirectX 12
Intel documents a narrow Watch Dogs: Legion DirectX 12 issue: red-and-black corruption in the 3D world on Intel Iris Plus Graphics in the Windows 10 and driver environment described in its support article. Intel says the issue is fixed in driver 30.0.100.9667 and newer. Its suggested DirectX 11 workaround avoids that rendering issue but has much lower performance in the described case, so treat it as a diagnostic workaround for this Intel problem—not a general performance recommendation. Test graphics settings and overlays one at a time
If the game runs but has low FPS or stutters, first try a lower resolution or preset, then reduce demanding features such as ray tracing. Make one change per test and note the result; this helps reveal whether the problem tracks with graphics load rather than a crash or launch failure.
You can also temporarily disable overlays one at a time and compare performance. A Steam player-support discussion from August 29, 2023 reproduces Ubisoft Support guidance to inspect CPU and GPU utilization, test overlays, and check shader-cache space and access in one performance report. That is case-specific community guidance, not a published universal fix. Avoid treating a single report as proof that overlays or cache are the cause on every PC. Steam Community: Performance issues.

Escalate with useful details if the problem remains
Contact Ubisoft Support with your recorded hardware, Windows and driver versions, launcher, DirectX mode, resolution and graphics settings, symptom timing, and any error text. Include what happened after file verification and each controlled setting or overlay test. That information makes it easier to distinguish a reproducible crash, a performance limit, and a configuration-specific rendering defect.
