To reduce lens flare on a Samsung Galaxy, clean every camera lens with a soft, dry microfiber cloth, change your angle to move bright light away from the edge of the frame, and take a comparison shot without any camera protector or cover. If an existing photo has a streak, Gallery’s Photo Assist may be able to erase it on supported devices.
Is it lens flare or overexposure?
Samsung describes lens flare as glare or light streaks, often visible when shooting toward a bright source. Overexposure is a separate problem: the image looks too bright and washed out. A single photo can show both, with some areas overly bright and others too dark. These steps are useful when flare seems likely, but a washed-out look alone does not establish its cause. Try these fixes in order
- Clean every camera lens. Use a soft, dry microfiber cloth to gently remove fingerprints, smudges, and dust. Clean all the lenses, not only the one you think is being used: Samsung notes that additional cameras can be used for preview, rangefinding, and autofocus. Avoid liquids or abrasive materials. Samsung’s instructions specify a soft, dry microfiber cloth.
- Change the framing and angle. Move the sun, lamp, or other bright source out of the frame and, if possible, farther from its edge. A small change in your position or the phone’s angle may reduce glare; avoid pointing directly into strong light when you can. Samsung describes flare as a normal effect of backlighting and says it can be more noticeable when a bright source is near the edge of the screen. Samsung Support Singapore explains the effect and suggests adjusting the angle.
- Compare at lower zoom. If you are using high zoom, take another shot at a lower zoom level. If your Galaxy offers a different camera option, you can compare that too. Samsung says flare may be more noticeable at high zoom; switching options is a test, not a guarantee that the streak will disappear. See Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance.
- Test without the camera protector or cover. Remove it temporarily and take a comparison photo in similar lighting. Samsung warns that accessories over the camera can cause light distortion as well as focus problems. If the photo is clearer without the accessory, that comparison points to it as a possible contributor. Samsung documents this accessory check.
Use the comparison shots to narrow down the cause
Change one thing at a time so you can see what affects the result: compare after cleaning, after changing the angle, and without the protector. Notice whether the haze or streak shifts or fades when the phone angle changes. A change with the angle is consistent with flare from a bright source, but it is a practical clue—not a definitive hardware test. Erase a light streak from an existing photo
Samsung’s current US support guide documents an editing option in Gallery, though the feature and labels can vary by device, region, and software version:

- Open the photo in Gallery.
- Tap Photo Assist.
- Select the unwanted light streak or draw around it, as the interface allows.
- Tap Erase.
This may reduce a streak, but it cannot be assumed to reconstruct every image perfectly, and not every Galaxy has the same feature. For Samsung’s documented workflow, see the US support guide.

A flare that appears only when you shoot toward a bright light is consistent with the normal optical effect Samsung describes. If haze persists in varied lighting after you clean the lenses and remove any protector or cover, contact Samsung Support or an authorized service provider for a device-specific diagnosis. Samsung’s guidance does not set a universal pass/fail threshold for hardware damage, so the symptom alone is not enough to diagnose a failed camera module.
