How to fix washed-out or dim colors when streaming games to Steam Deck

By Freedom251 Team · · 11 min read

Start by identifying whether the Deck is using Steam Remote Play or Moonlight with Sunshine, then update SteamOS and the relevant client. Compare the same game with HDR disabled. If SDR looks normal but HDR is dim or gray, troubleshoot the HDR chain and calibration; if you see smearing or large blocky color areas, troubleshoot host encoding and client decoding instead.

There is no single fix for every washed-out stream. The cause can be a Steam or SteamOS bug, HDR capability or calibration, a resolution mismatch, or an encoder/decoder problem that depends on the host PC, GPU, game, streaming app and Deck model.

What “washed out” means in a streamed game

Color complaints fall into several different symptoms. A dim, gray or low-contrast picture usually points you toward HDR state, tone mapping or display calibration. Smearing, posterization and large blocks of a single color are more consistent with video encoding or decoding artifacts. Treating every symptom as a brightness problem can send you to the wrong setting.

The same game is wrong when played locally on the Deck Streaming may not be the cause; inspect the Deck display mode, game settings or the game’s own HDR implementation.

“Washed out HDR stream” and “washed out colours, looks like greyscale” are descriptions users commonly use in Moonlight discussions, but those phrases do not identify one universal fault. Use the tests below to separate the possibilities.

Step 1: identify the streaming route

Steam Remote Play and Moonlight/Sunshine have different settings, release histories and HDR requirements. Before changing color controls, write down which application sends the picture to the Deck.

Steam Remote Play

Remote Play is the built-in Steam streaming path. Its relevant fixes include Steam client and SteamOS changes, plus Steam Support guidance for particular NVIDIA encoder and decoder artifacts.

Moonlight with Sunshine

Moonlight is the client and Sunshine is the host streaming service. Their HDR behavior depends on the host GPU’s HEVC Main 10 encoding, an HDR-capable host display or EDID emulator, client HDR support and matching resolution. Moonlight’s setup guide describes HDR10 streaming as beta and warns that color and scaling artifacts can occur.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Record the variables before you troubleshoot

Note these six variables. They determine which branch of the guide applies:

  • Streaming app: Steam Remote Play or Moonlight/Sunshine.
  • Stream mode: SDR or HDR.
  • Deck model: OLED or another Steam Deck model.
  • Host operating system, GPU and selected encoder.
  • Symptom: dim/desaturated image versus smearing or blocky artifacts.
  • Whether the game also looks wrong when run locally on the Deck.

Step 2: update SteamOS and the streaming client

Install current stable SteamOS updates and update the relevant Steam or Moonlight/Sunshine components before making extensive calibration changes. Reboot the Deck and host after updating, then reproduce the same scene in the same game.

Valve’s SteamOS 3.5.8 Preview notes from December 1, 2023 explicitly said: “Fixed incorrect colors (gamma) when using Steam In-Home Streaming.” That confirms that incorrect streaming gamma has existed as a software bug, but it does not prove that every current washed-out image has that cause.

Valve’s September 2026 stable Steam client notes report “Improved video color range” and “Added support for HDR streaming on Steam Deck OLED.” Those are release-note statements, not a measured prevalence study or a guarantee that a particular host and game will now display correct colors. If the issue remains after updating, continue with the route-specific tests.

Step 3: run an SDR-versus-HDR comparison

This is the fastest way to determine whether HDR is implicated.

  1. Choose a repeatable scene with bright highlights, neutral gray objects and dark shadows.
  2. Temporarily turn HDR off on the host.
  3. Disable HDR in the streaming client if it has a separate HDR switch.
  4. Reconnect or restart the stream and view the same scene in SDR.
  5. Restore HDR and repeat the comparison without changing other settings.

If SDR looks normal and HDR looks dim, gray or incorrectly contrasted, concentrate on HDR capability, host state, resolution and calibration. If both modes look wrong in the same way, HDR is less likely to be the only cause; investigate software versions, display rendering and the video pipeline.

For Moonlight, the client HDR option must be enabled for an HDR stream. If it is disabled, the stream is SDR even if HDR is enabled on the host. Conversely, enabling an HDR option cannot compensate for a host or client that does not satisfy the documented HDR requirements.

Moonlight and Sunshine: check the complete HDR chain

Confirm host encoding and display requirements

Sunshine’s documentation requires a compatible Windows host GPU that can encode HEVC Main 10 for HDR. It also requires an HDR-capable host display or an EDID emulator that presents an HDR display to the host. A normal SDR monitor or an encoder without Main 10 support cannot produce the documented HDR path simply by turning on a software switch.

Moonlight lists additional client requirements. Check the guide for the Deck model and client version you are using, because support can differ between hardware and software combinations.

Match the stream resolution to the host display

When using HDR, set the Moonlight stream resolution to the host display’s resolution. Moonlight’s guide lists scaling artifacts as a known issue when resolutions differ. A resolution mismatch can make color transitions and text look wrong even when the underlying HDR metadata is valid.

Reset host HDR state if it was already enabled

If HDR was enabled in Windows before Moonlight connected, the Moonlight guide says you may need to toggle host HDR off and on for the stream to enter HDR correctly. Use the host’s HDR control, switch it off, wait for the display to return to SDR, switch it on again, then reconnect Moonlight. This is a state reset, not a permanent calibration change.

Calibrate for the Deck’s display

Sunshine recommends calibrating HDR in Windows and in the game for the client display. Its documentation also suggests streaming the Windows HDR Calibration app to the client, completing the calibration while viewing the Deck, and saving a calibration profile.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Start the Moonlight/Sunshine stream with the Deck as the viewing display.
  2. Open the Windows HDR Calibration app through the streamed desktop.
  3. Adjust the black-level, peak-brightness and color-saturation patterns while looking at the Deck, following the app’s prompts.
  4. Save the resulting Windows profile.
  5. Open the game and run its own HDR calibration, using the same Deck image as your reference.
  6. Retest a scene with both bright highlights and dark detail.

Calibration is display-specific. A profile that looks correct on the host monitor can be wrong for the Deck’s panel. Sunshine also notes that some GPUs can deliver lower image quality or encoding performance in HDR than in SDR, so a technically valid HDR setup may still look or perform worse than its SDR equivalent.

Understand Moonlight’s beta limitations

Moonlight’s guide labels HDR10 streaming beta and warns about possible color artifacts. That warning matters when deciding whether to keep HDR enabled: if SDR is stable and HDR remains visibly wrong after the requirements and calibration checks, using SDR is a legitimate workaround rather than evidence that the Deck panel is defective.

Steam Remote Play: isolate color-range and video artifacts

Separate a gamma or range problem from codec damage

A uniformly pale or low-contrast image can result from gamma or video-range handling. The SteamOS 3.5.8 Preview gamma fix and the September 2026 Steam client color-range improvement show that Valve has addressed this class of issue in releases. Update first, then compare SDR and HDR before changing encoder controls.

Smearing and large blocky color regions are a different branch. Steam Support documents NVIDIA encoder/decoder incompatibilities that can produce these specific artifacts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For persistent smearing

Steam Support’s documented suggestions are to enable client hardware decoding or disable host hardware encoding. Change one setting at a time, reconnect and test the same moving scene. If enabling client hardware decoding removes the trails, leave it enabled unless another problem appears. If disabling host hardware encoding helps, the host GPU’s hardware encoder was part of the failure path.

For large blocky color areas

When blocky regions are tied to NVIDIA hardware encoding, Steam Support suggests disabling host hardware encoding. This targets the named encoding incompatibility; it is not a general cure for dim HDR or incorrect gamma. Software encoding can increase host CPU use and may reduce streaming performance, so check frame pacing after the image is corrected.

Do not generalize artifact fixes

Hardware-decoding and hardware-encoding switches address codec failures, not every desaturated picture. If turning them off changes nothing about a uniform gray veil, return to the SDR/HDR comparison and color-range checks instead of stacking unrelated changes.

Adjust the Steam Deck display without mistaking it for stream correction

SteamOS 3.5 added display color controls under Settings → Adjust Display Colors. Valve describes three rendering modes:

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Native: uses the panel’s native color rendering.
  • sRGB: emulates the sRGB color space and is the default rendering described for SteamOS 3.5.
  • Boosted: increases apparent vibrancy; Valve warns that it may clip gradients.

The same panel provides vibrancy and color-temperature adjustments. Use the preview or a known game scene to judge the Deck display, and change one control at a time.

These settings alter how the Deck renders its own display output. They do not repair incorrect HDR metadata, a host tone-mapping error or a damaged video stream. A more saturated Boosted mode can hide a pale image while clipping subtle gradients, so do not use it as proof that the stream’s HDR conversion is correct. If the Deck model is OLED, also consider that Valve’s September 2026 Steam client notes specifically mention added HDR streaming support for Steam Deck OLED; other models may follow a different capability path.

Use a local-game test to locate the fault

Run the same game locally on the Deck, using the same display mode and a comparable scene. This is a diagnostic question, not a claim that one outcome is expected.

  • Local and streamed images are both wrong: inspect SteamOS display rendering, the game’s HDR settings and the panel’s color mode before blaming the network or host encoder.
  • Local image is correct but the stream is wrong: focus on the route, HDR negotiation, host calibration and encoder/decoder path.
  • Only one game is wrong: its HDR implementation or in-game calibration may be involved; compare another title before changing system-wide color settings.

Apply general streaming-quality changes only after color diagnosis

Steam Support recommends a wired network for the best streaming experience. It also suggests lowering the game’s resolution or turning off V-sync as general quality steps. These can reduce latency, congestion or frame-pacing problems, but they are not established color-calibration fixes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use them after you have identified whether the symptom is HDR-related or a codec artifact. Lowering resolution can be counterproductive for Moonlight HDR if it creates a mismatch with the host display, so preserve the matched resolution required by that HDR setup.

A route-by-route decision table

Route and mode Symptom Next action What the action can and cannot establish
Steam Remote Play, SDR Uniformly pale or low contrast Update SteamOS and Steam; retest after the documented gamma and color-range improvements. Shows whether a software-version issue was corrected; does not identify every possible display cause.
Steam Remote Play, HDR Dim or gray compared with SDR Disable HDR, compare the same scene, then verify the host and Deck HDR path. Shows that HDR is implicated; it does not identify the exact tone-mapping fault.
Steam Remote Play, any mode Smearing Enable client hardware decoding or disable host hardware encoding, testing one change at a time. Targets the NVIDIA encoder/decoder incompatibility documented by Steam Support.
Steam Remote Play, any mode Large blocky color regions Disable host hardware encoding when NVIDIA encoding is involved. Targets a named encoding artifact, not general dimness.
Moonlight/Sunshine, SDR Normal image in SDR, wrong image in HDR Confirm Moonlight HDR is enabled, host HEVC Main 10 and display requirements are met, then calibrate. Establishes an HDR-chain problem area; HDR10 remains documented as beta.
Moonlight/Sunshine, HDR Scaling or color artifacts Match stream and host display resolutions; toggle host HDR off and on if it was enabled before connection. Addresses documented state and scaling issues; it is not a universal fix.
Any route Wrong locally and remotely Inspect Deck display mode and game HDR calibration before changing network or encoder settings. Suggests the fault is not limited to streaming.

Common mistakes that make the picture worse

  • Changing every setting at once: you lose the ability to tell whether HDR, encoding or display rendering caused the change. Keep a short record and revert unsuccessful changes.
  • Using Boosted mode to hide a gray image: this can clip gradients and does not correct stream metadata.
  • Assuming HDR is active because the host monitor is HDR: Moonlight requires its client HDR option, compatible encoding and a supported client path.
  • Ignoring resolution mismatch: Moonlight documents scaling artifacts when HDR stream and host resolutions differ.
  • Treating a codec artifact as a calibration problem: trails and rectangular color blocks call for encoder/decoder testing, not just vibrancy changes.
  • Assuming a release-note fix covers every setup: Valve’s gamma and color-range notes document improvements, not a guarantee for every host, game or Deck model.
  • Buying hardware as a first response: an HDR display or EDID emulator can be a prerequisite for some Sunshine configurations, but no dock, cable, router or calibration device is established as a general cure for this software and configuration problem.

When to keep using SDR

Use SDR while streaming if it is stable and correctly rendered after the comparison. For Moonlight/Sunshine, HDR10 is documented as beta and can involve color or scaling artifacts. Choosing SDR avoids an unreliable HDR conversion while preserving a playable stream. Revisit HDR after updating the host and client, matching resolution and completing host and in-game calibration.

What a successful fix should look like

After each change, return to the same test scene and check neutral grays, skin tones or other familiar colors, shadow detail and bright highlights. A fix is credible when the image remains correct after reconnecting and when switching between two scenes does not reveal new clipping, gray veils, smearing or block artifacts. If only one title remains wrong, keep the system settings that work elsewhere and investigate that game’s HDR configuration rather than applying a global Deck color change.

The evidence supports a decision process, not one universal switch: identify the route, update, compare SDR with HDR, verify the Moonlight/Sunshine HDR chain or Steam Remote Play artifact path, then adjust the Deck’s display rendering only as a separate visual preference.
