Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix a misbehaving VTuber avatar by identifying which signal is failing before changing random settings. VTube Studio can receive facial data from a PC webcam through OpenSeeFace or from a connected iPhone, iPad, or Android phone. Microphone lip-sync is a separate input that can drive mouth opening and mouth shape. Calibrate the active face tracker, verify that the correct camera or microphone is selected and available, then check parameter mapping and performance. If the avatar responds inside VTube Studio but not in your stream, troubleshoot the capture path separately.
- Face is weak or offset: recalibrate while looking straight at the camera with a neutral expression.
- Phone tracking jumps: check magnetic interference, lighting color, mirrors, and the connection.
- Webcam is missing: reselect it, try another USB port, and close applications or OBS scenes using it.
- Mouth is still: confirm the intended microphone, gain, cutoff, and mouth-related parameters.
- Tracking feels late: separate network transport delay from rendering or frame-rate lag.
First identify which signal is failing
Watch the avatar and VTube Studio’s own tracking or parameter display before opening OBS. A problem visible in the app is different from one introduced by capture, streaming, or audio routing.

- Check the face signal. Move your head, blink, and open your mouth. If the tracking indicators or parameter values do not change, troubleshoot the webcam or phone path.
- Check the microphone signal. Speak or make a sustained vowel and watch the microphone-driven values. If they stay flat, the selected input, permission, gain, or cutoff is the likely problem.
- Determine the intended mouth source. Your model may use facial mouth tracking, microphone volume, detected phonemes, or a combination. Do not tune microphone settings when the model is configured to use only face data.
- Compare the app with the final output. If the avatar works in VTube Studio but fails in OBS, leave tracker settings alone and inspect the selected window or virtual camera and the stream’s audio/video path.
This separation matters because webcam and phone tracking, microphone lip-sync, model parameters, and OBS output are independent stages. Fixing the wrong stage can make the avatar appear more unstable without addressing the cause.

VTube Studio’s official requirements state that iOS tracking needs Face ID or an Apple A12-or-newer chip, while Android tracking needs Google ARCore. These are compatibility requirements, not a guarantee of smooth tracking on every supported device.
Fix weak, offset, or inaccurate webcam tracking
Recalibrate before changing sensitivity
Run VTube Studio’s webcam calibration while facing the camera directly. Keep your expression neutral and sit at a normal camera distance rather than leaning close to the lens. DenchiSoft’s VTube Studio Documentation 1.8.5 states: “Calibration is important, so make sure to look straight at the camera with a neutral face when running it.”
Calibration establishes the neutral position used for later movement. If you calibrate while looking down, smiling, or sitting unusually close, the model can treat that pose as its baseline and appear permanently tilted, over-opened, or under-responsive. Recalibrate after changing camera height, distance, or lighting.
Make sure VTube Studio owns the camera
Another program can reserve a webcam even when VTube Studio is installed correctly. Close video-call software, browser tabs that requested camera access, camera utilities, and any OBS scene that uses the same device. In VTube Studio, reselect the intended camera, then unplug and reconnect it or try a different USB port.
If the camera still does not appear, check operating-system privacy permissions and look for VPN, firewall, or antivirus interference. The documented troubleshooting also calls out missing Visual C++ runtime errors as a possible cause of webcam problems; an error message mentioning that runtime points to a software dependency rather than a calibration issue.
Improve the input conditions
- Face the camera rather than relying on a sharply angled view.
- Use consistent, ordinary room lighting so the face is clearly visible.
- Remove anything that intermittently blocks the lens or changes exposure.
- After every physical change, recalibrate instead of compensating with extreme sensitivity values.
A webcam that produces stable data in its own preview but not in VTube Studio is more likely to have a selection, permission, runtime, or application-ownership problem than a defective sensor.
Fix iPhone or iPad tracking that jumps or glitches
Confirm device compatibility and recalibrate
Use an iPhone or iPad with Face ID or an Apple A12-or-newer chip, as specified by VTube Studio’s official requirements. Start tracking with your head centered and your face neutral, then run calibration while looking directly at the device camera. Keep the phone at a normal viewing distance and avoid moving it during calibration.
Remove possible magnetic interference
VTube Studio’s FAQ lists magnetic interference as a possible cause of erratic iPhone or iPad tracking. As a diagnostic test, remove a magnetic phone case or mount and move the device away from a nearby monitor, magnetic stand, or wireless charger. Restart the phone after changing the setup. These are possible causes, not a guaranteed diagnosis; a stable result after removing one item identifies a useful lead.

Check lighting and the camera view
Unusual colored lighting can make face detection unstable. Test with even, neutral illumination. Also look for a mirror or reflective surface in the phone’s camera view; the FAQ identifies mirrors as another possible source of glitches. Keep the face unobstructed and repeat calibration after changing the room or camera angle.
Prefer a stable connection when Wi-Fi is unreliable
For iPhone or iPad tracking data that stutters over Wi-Fi, the FAQ identifies USB as a stable connection option. Restart both the phone and the computer before testing again. A network restart can clear a temporary connection failure, but it cannot correct an incompatible device or a poor camera view.
Fix Android tracking and connection problems
Android face tracking requires a phone that supports Google ARCore. Check ARCore compatibility first; a camera that works for ordinary video is not necessarily compatible with the tracking path. The VTube Studio FAQ says direct USB face-tracking data is not supported on Android, so do not treat a USB cable as an equivalent fallback to the iPhone/iPad method.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use the supported network connection, keep the phone’s camera view clear, and calibrate while looking straight ahead with a neutral face. If tracking is intermittent, restart the phone and tracking app, then test in consistent lighting. A changing value in the app indicates that data is arriving; a completely static value points to compatibility, connection, camera access, or calibration rather than model physics.
Reduce jitter and tracking delay
Separate transport delay from rendering lag
There are two different symptoms:
- Transport delay: your head movement reaches VTube Studio late, often through a network connection between a phone and computer.
- Rendering or performance lag: data arrives promptly, but the avatar updates slowly or frame rate drops because the computer is overloaded.
Test by moving slowly while watching VTube Studio’s own indicators. If the indicators themselves update late, begin with phone, Wi-Fi, and computer restarts. If indicators move on time but the rendered model stutters, inspect performance settings instead.
Apply the documented performance checks
VTube Studio troubleshooting recommends checking frame-rate settings, GPU scheduling, overlays, power mode, and current drivers or software. Disable unnecessary overlays, use an appropriate performance or power setting for your computer, and update graphics drivers and the application. Change one item at a time so you can identify which change affects the symptom.
Do not assume that every delay has one universal fix. The official material documents these checks, but it does not establish a single remedy for every combination of tracker, computer, network, OBS configuration, and capture method.

Fix a mouth that does not move or has poor microphone lip-sync
Confirm the microphone path
In VTube Studio, select the microphone you actually intend to use and enable its microphone lip-sync option. Speak while watching the app’s microphone-related values. If there is no response, check the operating system’s input permission, the selected device, and whether another program has changed the default microphone.
The voice lip-sync and calibration details cited here come from the older VTube Studio Documentation 1.8.5. Current versions can change menu labels or platform behavior, so verify the control names in the version you run. That manual describes voice-based lip-sync on Windows and macOS except Apple Silicon Macs, and not on smartphones; treat those platform limits as version-specific and confirm them against current documentation.
Use gain and cutoff for different problems
- Volume gain controls how strongly microphone level affects the response. Raise it when normal speech barely opens the mouth; lower it when quiet speech causes exaggerated movement.
- Cutoff filters out low-level input. Increase it when fans, keyboard noise, or room hum trigger the mouth; lower it when soft speech is being ignored.
Make a short recording-style test: remain silent, speak at normal volume, then speak quietly. A good setting keeps the silent section stable, responds to ordinary speech, and does not clamp quiet words completely.

Reload a microphone that is lagging
If the microphone audio is delayed relative to the values shown in VTube Studio, use the documented microphone reload control. This refreshes the input connection without changing the model’s parameter mapping. If the delay returns immediately, check whether another application, virtual audio device, or system effect is buffering the microphone.
Tune mouth shape with phoneme controls
VTube Studio’s VoiceFrequency parameter is based on detected phonemes. If the mouth opens but the shape does not resemble speech, use the phoneme controls to tune the result for your model. The manual does not provide one universal recommended setup because mouth artwork and parameter ranges differ between models.
Combine facial and audio mouth movement when appropriate
The documented VoiceVolumePlusMouthOpen parameter combines microphone volume with tracked mouth opening. This is useful when you want facial movement to supply the base jaw motion while voice level adds openness. It is not required for ordinary facial tracking; choose it only when the model’s parameter configuration is intended to combine both signals.
When values change but the model does not
Watch the parameter display while moving your face or speaking. If the value changes but the artwork remains still, the input path is working and the model mapping is the next suspect.
- An expression may be forcing a different value.
- An animation may be writing to the same parameter continuously.
- A physics system may be overriding the visible result.
- The model may map the incoming parameter to a different deform or have an unusually narrow range.
Temporarily disable competing expressions, animations, or physics one at a time, then test the parameter again. Restore only the systems that do not override the intended movement. Avoid raising microphone gain to solve a mapping conflict; gain changes the input value, not which system has control.

Using an external tool such as VBridger
If you use VBridger or another external processor, first confirm that it is connected to the VTube Studio API and that the intended model parameters are being addressed. Investigate delay controls inside that tool’s own workflow. The VBridger manual documents a delay control for its workflow, but it does not establish that VBridger is necessary for ordinary VTube Studio microphone lip-sync.
Test the direct VTube Studio path before adding an external layer. If the mouth works without the extra tool, the added connection, parameter mapping, or delay setting is part of the problem. If it fails in both paths, return to microphone selection, gain, cutoff, and model overrides.
When the avatar works in VTube Studio but not in OBS
Keep the tracker diagnosis separate from the stream diagnosis. Confirm that OBS is capturing the expected VTube Studio window or virtual camera. VTube Studio documents a Windows-only virtual webcam feature; make sure OBS has selected that intended source rather than a different camera or an outdated scene source.
Compare three observations: the avatar in VTube Studio, the image visible in OBS’s preview, and the final recording or stream. If the first is correct and the second is wrong, fix the capture source. If both previews are correct but the recording is wrong, inspect the output scene and encoding load. The available documentation does not provide one universal OBS audio-video synchronization procedure for every tracker and capture chain, so do not apply a delay value blindly.
A complete troubleshooting order
Use this sequence to avoid changing several variables at once:
- Record whether the failure is in VTube Studio or only in OBS.
- Identify webcam, iPhone/iPad, Android, microphone, or combined input.
- Confirm device requirements: Face ID or Apple A12-or-newer for iOS, Google ARCore for Android.
- Reselect the camera or microphone and verify operating-system permissions.
- Close other camera-using applications and OBS scenes; try another webcam USB port when relevant.
- Restart the phone, computer, and tracking application if the connection is unstable.
- Correct lighting, mirrors, magnetic accessories, monitor proximity, and camera distance.
- Recalibrate with a neutral expression while looking directly at the camera.
- For microphone lip-sync, test input level, then adjust gain and cutoff separately.
- If values move but artwork does not, inspect expressions, animations, physics, and parameter mapping.
- If tracking data is timely but rendering is slow, check frame rate, GPU scheduling, overlays, power mode, and drivers.
- Only after the app behaves correctly, troubleshoot OBS capture and stream output.
Document the result of each step. A note such as “parameter changes in VTube Studio, model unchanged” is more useful to support staff than “lip-sync broken.”
When to contact VTube Studio support
Escalate after isolating the input path and reproducing the issue with a clean test. Include the tracker type, operating system, VTube Studio version, phone model and connection method when applicable, and whether the failure appears inside VTube Studio or only in OBS. Describe the exact symptom—missing device, unstable values, delayed updates, static mouth, or stream-only failure—and list the calibration, permission, connection, and parameter checks already completed. This gives support enough context to distinguish a device or network issue from a model configuration problem.
