1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA vsftpd 550 response means the server refused an operation that would change the filesystem. For a normal local account, check local_enable=YES, write_enable=YES, and Unix write and directory-traversal permissions on the destination. Then verify the path as seen through any chroot, reload the effective configuration, and compare the client transcript with the server log. Do not start with chmod -R 777 or enable anonymous uploads: those changes can hide the actual fault and weaken the server.

The exact operation matters. STOR and APPE need a writable destination directory, while MKD, RMD, and rename commands also depend on permissions on the relevant parent directory. A path that appears absolute in the FTP client may actually be relative to the session’s chroot.

What a 550 upload error means
FTP status 550 is a generic permanent failure response. In vsftpd, it commonly appears when a client sends STOR (create or replace a file), APPE (append), MKD (make a directory), or a rename request and vsftpd cannot or will not perform the filesystem change.
There are four broad causes:
- vsftpd’s write policy is inactive for the account type.
- The logged-in Unix account cannot write the destination directory or traverse one of its parents.
- The client is addressing a path outside the effective chroot or a directory that does not exist inside it.
- An account-specific restriction, ACL, AppArmor rule, or different running configuration is denying the operation.
The message alone does not identify which category applies. Record the account type, the exact FTP command that failed, the path shown after login, and the server’s effective settings before changing permissions.

Start with the failed operation and path
Distinguish file uploads from directory and rename operations
| Client operation | What must be allowed | Common 550 cause |
|---|---|---|
STOR filename |
Write permission on the destination directory; execute permission on every parent | Directory is owned by another account or is not writable |
APPE filename |
Access to the existing file and its parent directory | File or directory mode blocks the logged-in account |
MKD dirname |
Write and execute permission on the parent directory | Parent is traversable but not writable |
RMD dirname |
Write and execute permission on the directory’s parent, plus any server policy restrictions | Parent directory is not writable or the target is not an allowed path |
RNFR/RNTO |
Write and execute permission on the containing directory | Rename is attempted across directories or the containing directory is not writable |
Ask the client to show its transcript, or enable verbose output temporarily. A line such as STOR report.csv followed by 550 Failed to open file identifies a file-creation path; MKD or RNTO points to a directory or rename permission problem instead.
Interpret the path from the FTP session’s point of view
After login, run PWD and LIST (or the client’s equivalent) and note the displayed directory. FTP clients often display a leading slash even when it means “the root of this session,” not the server’s real filesystem root. If the account is jailed, /incoming may map to a host path such as /srv/ftp/user/incoming. A host path pasted into the client can therefore point somewhere that does not exist inside the jail.

Check the account type before editing configuration
vsftpd handles normal local users, anonymous sessions, and virtual users differently. Confirm which identity is actually used. A local login normally maps to a Unix account such as ftpuser; an anonymous session uses the anonymous FTP identity; a virtual user is authenticated through PAM and is anonymous-like by default unless its privilege mode is deliberately changed.
Also record whether the failed request is an upload, append, directory creation, deletion, or rename. Configuration that permits a local user’s upload does not automatically permit anonymous uploads, and a setting that affects file creation does not grant access to a parent directory.
Verify the effective vsftpd write policy
Open /etc/vsftpd.conf and inspect the directives that match the account type. A typical local-user baseline is:
anonymous_enable=NO
local_enable=YES
write_enable=YES
write_enable controls whether FTP commands that change the filesystem are allowed at all. The vsftpd configuration reference lists STOR, DELE, RNFR, RNTO, MKD, RMD, APPE, and SITE among the affected commands. Its default is NO, so a server can accept a login and directory listing while rejecting every upload.
| Directive | Applies to | Effect | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
local_enable |
Unix local accounts | Allows local users to authenticate | It does not grant write access by itself |
write_enable |
All write-capable FTP operations | Enables commands that change the filesystem | Must be YES before Unix permissions are considered |
anon_upload_enable |
Anonymous sessions | Allows anonymous uploads when writing is enabled | Disabled by default and still requires destination permission for the anonymous account |
local_umask |
New files created by local users | Removes permission bits from the initial file mode | Does not make a directory writable |
anon_umask |
New files created by anonymous users | Sets the mask used for newly created anonymous files | Does not grant anonymous access to the destination |
For an intentional anonymous-upload design, the relevant setting is:

anon_upload_enable=YES
Use it only when anonymous writing is a conscious requirement. Enabling it to bypass a local-user permission error changes the security model and usually creates a larger problem.
Make sure you are editing the configuration the service actually loads
Remove ambiguity between multiple configuration files, startup arguments, and package-specific service units. Inspect the running process and service status:
sudo systemctl status vsftpd
ps -ef | grep '[v]sftpd'
sudo grep -nE '^(anonymous_enable|local_enable|write_enable|anon_upload_enable|chroot_local_user|chroot_list_enable|chroot_list_file|local_umask|anon_umask)=' /etc/vsftpd.conf
A setting commented out in the file may be supplied elsewhere, and a second copy of the configuration can be edited accidentally. The process command line and service definition help identify the file in use. Treat the effective value, not the value you intended to set, as the one that governs the test.
Check Unix ownership, modes, and directory traversal
For a local account, the account needs both write and execute permission on the destination directory. It also needs execute permission on every parent directory, because execute on a directory means “may traverse or access entries by name.” Read permission is useful for listings but is not a substitute for execute permission.
Inspect the account and the entire path on the Ubuntu host:
id ftpuser
ls -ld /srv /srv/ftp /srv/ftp/incoming
namei -l /srv/ftp/incoming
Replace ftpuser and the path with the identity and directory used by the failed session. The final ls -ld line should show write and execute access for the owner or a group that includes the account. Every parent shown by namei -l must be executable by that account.
Correct ownership or group access deliberately
If the directory is intended for one account, assign it to that account and use a restrictive mode appropriate to the workload. For a shared upload area, create or use an upload group, add only the required accounts, and grant group write and execute access. Verify the result with id and ls -ld after changing ownership or group membership.

For example, a shared directory might be owned by an administrative account with an upload group, then given group read, write, and execute bits. The exact owner, group, and mode depend on who must read, replace, or remove files; do not copy a broad mode without deciding those roles.
Avoid a blanket:
chmod -R 777 /srv/ftp
That command grants every local user write access, can make accidental deletion possible, and conceals whether the real issue is ownership, a parent directory, an ACL, or a chroot path. Fix the narrow directory and account relationship instead.
Check ACLs when ordinary mode bits look correct
Access-control lists can add or restrict permissions beyond the familiar owner/group/other columns. If the mode appears writable but the upload still fails, inspect ACLs:
getfacl -p /srv/ftp/incoming
Look for a named user or group entry and the ACL mask. A named entry that appears permissive can still be limited by the mask. Remove or adjust an unintended ACL only after confirming which accounts depend on it.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Evaluate chroot settings and the effective jail
When chroot_local_user=YES, a local user’s FTP session is confined to a jail rooted at its configured login directory. The user cannot address arbitrary host paths, and the path used by the client must exist inside that jail. A directory that is writable on the host can still be unreachable from the session if it is outside the jail.
Check the combination of:
chroot_local_userchroot_list_enablechroot_list_file
The list semantics depend on the combination. In one mode, users listed in the file are jailed; with chroot_local_user=YES, the list can instead identify users exempted from the jail. Read the active configuration and the list file together rather than assuming the filename’s purpose.
Create a writable directory below the jail root
A safer layout is a non-writable jail root with a writable child directory. If the jail root maps to /srv/ftp/ftpuser, create a child such as /srv/ftp/ftpuser/incoming, grant the intended account write and execute access to that child, and upload to /incoming from the FTP client. The jail root itself does not need to become writable.

Do not make the jail root writable merely to silence a 550 response. The vsftpd reference warns that a writable chroot root has security implications. Change the jail design deliberately, then reconnect and test the path as the jailed user sees it.

Understand what umask can and cannot fix
local_umask and anon_umask affect the mode of files after vsftpd creates them. They determine which permission bits are removed from the initial mode; they do not grant permission to create a file in a directory.
Therefore, changing a umask cannot fix 550 Failed to open file when the account lacks directory write permission. First make one test upload succeed with correct ownership, group, traversal, and chroot path. Only then choose a umask that gives the intended readers and group the desired access to new files.
Remember that a umask affects newly created files, not existing files, directory ownership, parent traversal, or the ability to rename and delete entries. Those are separate permission decisions.

After saving a configuration change, use the service manager for the Ubuntu release to reload or restart vsftpd, then disconnect and create a fresh FTP session. Existing sessions may retain state, including a chroot context, so testing without reconnecting can produce a misleading result.

Repeat one operation against one known path. Avoid changing several variables at once. If the upload works, test directory creation and rename separately because they exercise different parent-directory permissions.
Enable or inspect transfer logging with xferlog_enable. The vsftpd manpage documents the default log location for the Ubuntu package; use the path configured on your host and match the log timestamp to the client’s FTP transcript. The combination tells you whether vsftpd rejected the request before touching the filesystem or whether the operating system denied the path.

Cases that need separate treatment
Anonymous uploads
Anonymous uploads require all of the following:
write_enable=YESanon_upload_enable=YES- Write and execute permission for the anonymous FTP identity on the destination directory and its parents
The anonymous option is disabled by default. The destination should normally be a dedicated drop directory with tightly limited read, rename, and deletion capabilities. Do not enable anonymous writing as a workaround for a local account; fix the local account’s identity and permissions instead.
Virtual users
Virtual users authenticate through the PAM-backed setup and are anonymous-like by default unless configured with the appropriate privilege mode. A virtual login can therefore succeed while an upload is denied even though a similarly named Unix account has access. Verify the virtual-user mapping, its effective filesystem identity, and the privilege settings before changing directory modes.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Directory creation and rename failures
If file uploads work but MKD or RNTO fails, focus on the containing directory. Creating a child requires write and execute access on the parent; renaming an entry requires write and execute access on the directory that contains the old and new names. A file’s own mode is not the only factor.
Append failures
APPE opens an existing file for appending. Check the file’s ownership and mode as well as the parent directory. A directory can be writable while the existing file is read-only for the logged-in identity.
When configuration and permissions both look right
A persistent 550 after the basic checks usually means the effective path or an additional host policy is different from what you inspected. Work through these possibilities in order:
- Confirm the FTP account and reproduce the failure with a single, simple filename in the intended upload directory.
- Run
PWDandLISTin the client, then map that session path to the host path under the chroot. - Recheck every parent with
namei -l, including mount points and symlink targets. - Inspect ACLs with
getfaclif standard mode bits do not explain the denial. - Check AppArmor or another host security policy for a denial at the same timestamp.
- Verify that the service was reloaded and that its command line points to the configuration file you edited.
- Compare the server log with the client’s command sequence; test
STOR,MKD, and rename independently.
Do not widen permissions until the failing path and identity are proven. If a policy denial is responsible, adjust the policy for the intended directory rather than granting global write access.
Choosing between a configuration fix and a filesystem fix
| Evidence | Preferred change | Why |
|---|---|---|
write_enable is NO and all write commands fail |
Enable write_enable=YES for the intended service design |
The server is rejecting filesystem-changing commands before directory permissions can help |
| Local login works but the destination is owned by another account | Correct owner, group, or ACL for the intended local account | The account is authenticated but lacks Unix access |
| Only anonymous uploads fail | Review anon_upload_enable and anonymous identity permissions |
Local-user settings do not authorize anonymous sessions |
| Only paths outside the session root fail | Use a directory inside the jail or redesign the jail deliberately | The client cannot access a host path outside its effective root |
| File creation works but new files have unwanted modes | Adjust local_umask or anon_umask |
Umask controls resulting file modes, not directory access |
| Modes and configuration are correct but logs show a host denial | Fix the relevant ACL, AppArmor rule, mount policy, or loaded configuration | Another enforcement layer is rejecting the operation |
Worked diagnosis examples
Login succeeds, every local upload returns 550
- Confirm the session uses a local account and run
PWD. - Check that
local_enable=YESandwrite_enable=YESare effective. - Inspect the destination and parents with
namei -l. - Grant the account or its intended group write and execute access to the destination.
- Reconnect after reloading vsftpd and repeat one
STOR.
If the same account can list files but cannot create one, listing permission is not proof of write permission; the destination directory still needs the appropriate write bit.
Uploads work in the home directory but fail in /incoming
Compare the two paths with namei -l and check whether /incoming exists inside the user’s chroot. Correct the child directory’s owner, group, or ACL, or upload to the path that actually exists within the jail. Do not make the jail root writable as a shortcut.
Files upload, but the client cannot create a folder
Inspect the parent directory of the requested folder. The account may have permission to write an existing file while lacking write and execute permission on the directory needed for MKD. Fix the parent-directory access, then test folder creation separately.
Preventing the next 550
- Document each FTP account’s type, Unix identity, jail root, and approved upload directory.
- Use a dedicated upload directory instead of exposing a broad filesystem tree.
- Keep jail roots protected and place writable subdirectories beneath them.
- Grant access through deliberate owner and group assignments or narrowly scoped ACLs.
- Keep anonymous uploads disabled unless the workflow explicitly requires them.
- Set umasks to the intended post-creation sharing model after directory access is working.
- Keep transfer logs available long enough to correlate failures with client timestamps.
- After configuration changes, reconnect and test one operation at a time.
A 550 response is therefore a diagnostic starting point, not a single setting to toggle. Identify the account and command, verify the effective write policy, prove the complete path and Unix permissions, account for chroot behavior, and use logs to find any remaining enforcement layer.
