One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchIf your VPN stopped connecting immediately after Windows updated, the update itself may be the cause. Microsoft documented a Windows 11 VPN failure beginning with the April 9, 2024 updates and identified the May 14, 2024 update (KB5037771) as addressing the issue on Windows 11 versions 22H2 and 23H2. Start with the low-impact checks—verify ordinary internet access, install all current Windows updates, restart, and check your network adapter—before attempting a network reset.
The exact fix depends on your Windows release and VPN type. Windows 11 24H2 has a separate, enterprise-only DirectAccess problem, while a normal consumer VPN usually points to a pending cumulative update, an incompatible network driver, or interference from security software.

Identify which Windows and VPN problem you have
Knowing the version and VPN technology prevents you from applying a broad fix to a narrow problem. Press Windows key + R, type winver, and press Enter. Record the Windows edition, version, and OS build. You can also open Settings > System > About to confirm the edition.
Windows 11 versions 22H2 and 23H2
Microsoft documented a known issue that could cause a VPN connection to fail after the April 9, 2024 update or later updates. Microsoft listed KB5037771, released May 14, 2024, as addressing that issue for Windows 11 versions 22H2 and 23H2. If your failure began after an update and your PC is on one of these releases, bringing Windows fully up to date is the first corrective action.

Windows 11 version 21H2
Windows 11 21H2 release notes also described a version-specific known issue in which a VPN connection could fail. The servicing fix and support status for 21H2 are different from those for 22H2 and 23H2, so do not assume that installing KB5037771 is the applicable answer. Check Windows Update for the latest update offered to your device, or follow your organization’s servicing policy if the computer is managed.
Windows 11 version 24H2 with DirectAccess
Windows 11 24H2 has a separate enterprise case involving DirectAccess after a fresh installation or an in-place upgrade. The documented symptoms are a DirectAccess connection that stays at Connecting, plus an IPHTTPS status that reports Last Error Code : 0x57 and Interface Status : failed to connect to the IPHTTPS server. Waiting to reconnect. This is not the same as a typical third-party VPN client failure. Microsoft advises enterprise customers that require DirectAccess to evaluate Always On VPN (AOVPN) until a fix is available.
Separate a Windows problem from an account or server problem
Try the same VPN account on another device or another network, if your organization permits it. If only the updated Windows PC fails while the account works elsewhere, the local Windows installation, adapter, or VPN client is more likely to be involved. If every device fails, contact the VPN provider or your organization’s VPN administrator before changing Windows networking.

Use the following sequence. It moves from checks that preserve your configuration to actions that remove and recreate it.
1. Confirm that ordinary internet access works
- Disconnect the VPN from its client or from Settings > Network & internet > VPN.
- Open a browser and load several sites. If possible, test both Wi-Fi and Ethernet.
- Open Settings > Network & internet and confirm that Windows reports an active Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection.
A VPN cannot establish its tunnel reliably when the underlying connection is dropping, captive, or unable to reach the internet. If normal browsing fails, repair Wi-Fi or Ethernet first. Restart the router only if that is allowed by your network policy; do not treat a router restart as a substitute for installing the Windows fix.

2. Install current Windows fixes and restart
- Save your work and connect the PC to stable power and internet.
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install every available quality, cumulative, and servicing update that Windows offers.
- Choose Restart now when prompted, or restart manually after installation completes.
- After Windows starts, wait a few minutes for background services to finish, then try the VPN again.
Do not judge the result until the restart has completed. A cumulative update can replace networking components while the computer is offline and activate them only after reboot. On Windows 11 22H2 or 23H2, this step should include the update that supersedes or contains the KB5037771 fix.
3. Run the Windows update troubleshooter
If the update will not install, is stuck pending, or repeatedly rolls back, use Microsoft’s automated Get Help Windows Update troubleshooter. Open the Get Help app from Start, search for Windows Update troubleshooter, and follow the diagnostic prompts. Apply the suggested repair, restart if requested, and return to Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates.
This troubleshooter is for update installation and servicing problems. It will not repair a remote VPN gateway, expired credentials, or an enterprise policy that blocks the client.
4. Check the VPN profile and client without deleting configuration
- Open Settings > Network & internet > VPN and confirm that the expected VPN profile is still present.
- Check the server address, VPN type, authentication method, and sign-in name against the values supplied by your administrator or provider.
- If you use a separate VPN application, open it and install any client update approved for your organization. Do not install an unapproved client on a managed computer.
- Sign out of the VPN client, restart Windows, and sign in again. Avoid deleting a working profile until you have recorded its settings.
An update can leave a profile visible while a client service, certificate, or virtual adapter is not running. If the client displays a specific error code, record it before making changes; the code helps an administrator distinguish authentication, DNS, certificate, and transport failures.
5. Temporarily test security and filtering software
Microsoft’s update troubleshooting guidance recommends disabling a VPN temporarily when diagnosing update installation. The same principle applies in reverse: security software that filters traffic, inspects TLS, or installs a network filter can prevent a VPN tunnel from starting after Windows replaces networking components.

- Follow your organization’s security policy before pausing protection.
- Disconnect the VPN and pause only the specific web, firewall, or traffic-filtering feature that policy allows you to test.
- Try the VPN once.
- Immediately re-enable protection whether or not the connection succeeds.
If the VPN works only while a security feature is paused, do not leave that feature disabled. Ask the security administrator for a compatible update or an approved exception. On a managed device, the administrator may need to update both the security agent and the VPN client.

6. Update or reinstall the network adapter driver
Microsoft identifies incompatible network drivers as a recognized Windows Update troubleshooting path. The adapter may be the physical Wi-Fi or Ethernet device, or a virtual adapter installed by a VPN client.
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters.
- Look for a warning icon, a device that disappeared, or a VPN-related virtual adapter that is disabled.
- Right-click the affected adapter and select Update driver, then choose the automatic search option if your organization permits it.
- If the adapter remains faulty, right-click it, choose Uninstall device, confirm, and restart Windows. Windows will attempt to detect and reinstall the hardware driver during startup.
Uninstalling a physical adapter can temporarily remove Wi-Fi or Ethernet connectivity. Have the manufacturer’s approved driver available through another device or use Ethernet if possible. Do not remove a virtual adapter that your organization’s VPN client requires unless the client documentation or administrator instructs you to do so.
Use Network reset only after the targeted fixes fail
Microsoft says that Network reset should be the last step. It removes installed network adapters and their settings, reinstalls the adapters after restart, and restores networking defaults. This can clear a damaged binding or stale configuration, but it also removes custom settings that other software depends on.
What Network reset changes
- Installed physical and virtual network adapters are removed and re-created.
- Adapter settings return to Windows defaults.
- Saved network configurations may need to be entered again.
- VPN client software may need to be reinstalled or reconfigured.
- Hyper-V virtual switches and other virtualization networking may need to be rebuilt.
How to perform the reset in Windows 11
- Open Settings > Network & internet > Advanced network settings.
- Scroll to Network reset.
- Select Reset now and confirm.
- Allow Windows to restart. If it does not restart automatically, restart it yourself.
- Reconnect to Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
- Reinstall or repair the approved VPN client, recreate its profile if necessary, and test the connection.
Record custom DNS servers, proxy settings, static IP details, VPN profile values, and virtualization switches before resetting. A reset is not a documented replacement for the Windows cumulative fix; apply current updates first.

Choose the remedy with the smallest acceptable impact
| Remedy | Risk to existing configuration | Administrator access | Restart | Effect on VPN clients or virtual switches |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Install current Windows updates | Low; Windows replaces serviced components | Often required on managed PCs | Usually required | Normally preserved, though a client may need an update |
| Run Get Help Windows Update troubleshooter | Low to moderate; repairs update servicing issues | May be required | If prompted | Does not intentionally remove VPN profiles |
| Update network adapter driver | Moderate; driver behavior and settings can change | Usually required | Often required | Virtual adapters remain unless specifically removed |
| Uninstall and redetect an adapter | Moderate to high; connectivity can disappear until restart | Usually required | Yes | Affected virtual adapter may require client repair |
| Network reset | Highest; adapters and networking settings are removed | Usually required | Yes | VPN software, profiles, Hyper-V switches, and custom settings may need reinstallation or reconfiguration |
Start at the top of the table and move downward only when the preceding step does not address the failure. The broader the change, the more configuration you should record beforehand.
DirectAccess and other managed-enterprise cases
If your organization uses DirectAccess and the PC is on Windows 11 24H2, check the documented symptoms before resetting anything. A connection that remains at Connecting together with IPHTTPS error 0x57 and the “failed to connect to the IPHTTPS server” status is an enterprise servicing case, not a routine home-VPN problem.
- Capture the Windows version and build with
winver. - Record the exact DirectAccess and IPHTTPS status text.
- Send the details to your organization’s administrator.
- Ask whether the device is affected by the known 24H2 DirectAccess issue and whether the organization is evaluating Always On VPN.
Do not replace DirectAccess with another VPN or perform Network reset on a managed workstation without approval. Enterprise policies, certificates, device tunnels, and management agents may be required for the connection to work.
What not to do first
- Do not immediately uninstall the latest Windows update. Microsoft’s documented path is to install current fixes and restart. Removing an update can reintroduce security vulnerabilities and may not remove the component that caused the failure.
- Do not repeatedly delete and recreate VPN profiles. You can lose certificate mappings, routing settings, or organization-specific parameters without fixing the underlying adapter or servicing problem.
- Do not leave antivirus or firewall protection disabled. Use a short, policy-approved test and turn protection back on immediately.
- Do not reset networking before saving custom settings. Network reset removes the information you may need to reconnect.
- Do not assume a USB Ethernet adapter is the fix. It can help determine whether the failure is limited to Wi-Fi, but it does not correct a Windows VPN servicing issue.
When to escalate
Contact your VPN administrator, IT help desk, or provider when the ordered steps do not restore the connection, when the client reports certificate or authentication errors, or when multiple devices fail with the same account. Include the following information so the issue can be diagnosed without repeating basic steps:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Windows edition, version, and build.
- The date and KB number of the update installed immediately before the failure.
- Whether ordinary Wi-Fi or Ethernet internet access works.
- The VPN technology and client version.
- The exact error text or code, including any IPHTTPS status.
- Whether updating the adapter, restarting, or testing without the VPN changed the symptom.
- Whether Network reset has been performed and which profiles or virtual switches must be restored.
For Windows 11 22H2 or 23H2, mention the April 2024 VPN issue and verify that the device has the May 14, 2024 KB5037771 fix or a later update. For DirectAccess on Windows 11 24H2, mention the 0x57 IPHTTPS status and ask about Microsoft’s Always On VPN guidance.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I uninstall the Windows update that broke my VPN?
Usually no. First install all updates offered in Settings > Windows Update, restart, and test again. Uninstalling an update can remove security fixes and is not Microsoft’s first-line remedy for the documented VPN issue.
Will Network reset delete my VPN account?
It does not delete the account held by your provider, but it removes Windows network adapters and settings. Your VPN application, profile, certificates, or virtual switches may need to be reinstalled or configured again.
Why does Wi-Fi work while the VPN still will not connect?
That pattern indicates that basic internet access is available, but the VPN client, virtual adapter, credentials, certificate, security filter, or Windows VPN component may be failing. Record the client’s exact error and work through the driver and security-software checks before resetting networking.
Is the DirectAccess 0x57 error the same as a normal VPN failure?
No. Microsoft documents it as a Windows 11 24H2 enterprise DirectAccess issue involving IPHTTPS. An administrator should evaluate the device and consider Always On VPN rather than applying consumer VPN troubleshooting blindly.
