Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If your rally game has engine and tyre noise but no co-driver, or friends cannot hear your microphone, treat those as separate audio paths. First confirm the game’s co-driver voice control and dialogue sliders, then match the game’s output mode to your actual headset, TV, or receiver. After that, check the operating-system output device, microphone permissions, and push-to-talk binding. The sequence below covers EA SPORTS WRC, DiRT Rally 2.0 on PC, and the common Windows, PlayStation, and Xbox routing failures that can make speech disappear.
Identify which voice path is failing
Rally games commonly have two unrelated voice systems:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Co-driver audio: prerecorded or generated pace notes and warnings played to you during a stage. It is an output problem when it is missing or too quiet.
- Voice chat: live microphone audio exchanged with other players. It has both an input path (your microphone) and an output path (where other players’ voices are played).
A game can therefore have working engine effects while co-driver calls are silent, or working co-driver calls while your microphone is muted. Test each path independently instead of changing every audio setting at once.

Use the symptom to choose the first test
| What you hear or observe | Most useful first check | Why this check comes first |
|---|---|---|
| Engine, tyres, and music play; co-driver is completely silent | Enable the game’s co-driver voice option and raise the co-driver or speech slider | This isolates the dialogue channel before you change platform routing |
| Co-driver is audible but extremely quiet | Raise master and co-driver levels, then reduce engine, effects, and music | Dialogue may be masked rather than absent |
| Friends cannot hear you, but you hear the game | Check the selected microphone, mute switch, privacy permission, and push-to-talk binding | This is an input-path fault, not a co-driver-volume fault |
| You hear effects but no speech through a TV or receiver | Switch temporarily to a plain stereo/TV output mode and verify the HDMI destination | Surround systems can send dialogue to a missing or disabled center channel |
| Every game loses dialogue | Test another output device and inspect platform or driver audio settings | A system-level route or hardware issue is more likely than one game’s slider |
Restore co-driver audio in EA SPORTS WRC
EA SPORTS WRC exposes a dedicated co-driver voice switch and separate dialogue controls. Menu names can vary slightly by platform or update, but the relevant controls are in the game’s audio/accessibility settings.

Turn the voice channel on
- Pause the game and open Settings.
- Open the Audio or Accessibility audio page.
- Find “Co-Driver Voice – Turn On/Off Co-Driver voice over” and set it to On.
- Start a short stage or tutorial and listen for a call. A quiet test section is preferable because it makes missing speech easier to distinguish from masking by engine noise.
Co-driver timing and call type are separate gameplay controls. If calls arrive too early, too late, or with a different level of detail than expected, adjust those gameplay options after confirming that the voice channel itself is enabled. They do not replace the voice on/off control.
Set the dialogue mix
EA documents independent sliders for master, co-driver, speech, music, effects, engine, and surfaces. Use them as a mix rather than moving only the global volume:
- Raise Master enough to give the system usable headroom.
- Raise Co-Driver and Speech together if both pace notes and other spoken lines are quiet.
- Lower Engine, Effects, Music, and, if necessary, Surfaces until speech is clear during acceleration and heavy impacts.
- Replay the same section after each small change. This makes it clear which slider solved the masking.
Do not assume that increasing Master alone will make calls intelligible: it raises competing sounds at the same time and can leave the balance unchanged.

Match the mastering mode to your equipment
The game lists TV, Headphones, Home Cinema, Soundbar, and Night Mode mastering choices.
| Physical setup | Starting mode | Test condition |
|---|---|---|
| Wired or wireless headset | Headphones | Use a simple stereo test before enabling any virtual-surround feature |
| Two TV speakers or a stereo HDMI system | TV | Confirm the television is the selected HDMI output |
| Dedicated multichannel receiver and speakers | Home Cinema | Verify that the center speaker is connected and active |
| Physical soundbar | Soundbar | Check the soundbar’s input and its own dialogue or channel mode |
| Late-night listening at reduced peaks | Night Mode | Use only after speech is present; it is not a substitute for a missing channel |
For diagnosis, choose the mode that most closely matches the hardware. A surround preset on a two-speaker setup can place dialogue in a channel that the system cannot reproduce. Switching temporarily to Headphones or a straightforward stereo/TV path is a controlled way to test that possibility.
Set up voice chat in DiRT Rally 2.0 on PC
DiRT Rally 2.0’s PC configuration documentation includes network voice and a push-to-speak action. Voice chat requires a working microphone route and a control that actually transmits it; co-driver volume controls cannot repair a muted microphone.

Choose and test the microphone in Windows
- Connect the headset or microphone before starting the game.
- In Windows sound settings, select the intended microphone as the input device rather than leaving an unused webcam, monitor, or controller microphone active.
- Speak while watching the operating system’s input meter. If the meter does not move, fix the connection, hardware mute switch, input level, or Windows permission before opening the game.
- Close applications that may have taken exclusive control of the microphone, then launch or restart the game so it detects the corrected default device.
Bind and use push-to-speak
- Open the game’s control configuration.
- Locate the network voice or voice-chat action identified in the PC manual as push-to-speak.
- Assign a key or controller button that is not already used for an essential driving command.
- Check that the action is not unbound, disabled, or assigned to a button with a hardware fault.
- Hold the control while speaking during an online session and ask another player to confirm receipt.
Also check the microphone’s physical mute switch and any platform privacy setting that blocks desktop applications from using the input. Hearing other players proves only that your output path works; it says nothing about your microphone.

When engine and crash sounds are present but dialogue is missing, routing is a separate failure branch from the in-game mix. Community reports have associated this symptom with operating-system output selection, HDMI destinations, and surround or center-channel configuration. Those reports are diagnostic leads, not a universal explanation, so test them in a reversible order.
Windows
- Open the Windows sound output list and select the device you are physically using: the headset, TV, receiver, or speakers.
- Check the per-application volume mixer and make sure the game is not routed to a different output or muted independently.
- For the test, disable unintended spatial-audio or virtual-surround processing and use a plain stereo format.
- If the game is connected by HDMI, confirm that the selected HDMI endpoint is the television or receiver currently powered on, not a disconnected display.
- Restart the game after changing the default output. Some games retain the device chosen at launch.
PlayStation and Xbox
- Open the console’s audio output settings and select the actual headset, television, or receiver.
- Temporarily choose stereo/PCM or the platform’s uncompressed stereo option for a diagnostic test instead of a surround bitstream.
- Check headset chat/game balance controls and any physical mute or balance wheel.
- Test the built-in TV speakers and then the headset. If one works and the other does not, the fault is in the failed output path rather than the game’s co-driver setting.
Surround dialogue is often assigned to a center channel. If no center speaker is connected, powered, or selected, effects can remain audible while spoken calls vanish. A working stereo test does not prove the surround chain is configured correctly; it only narrows the fault to channel routing.

Use a controlled troubleshooting sequence
Changing many settings simultaneously makes it difficult to identify the cause. Follow this order and keep notes of the result after each step.
- Reproduce the problem: Use a quiet stage, tutorial, or practice section and note whether engine and effects are present.
- Verify the game voice switch: In EA SPORTS WRC, confirm Co-Driver Voice is on. In any title, check that dialogue or co-driver volume is not zero.
- Rebalance: Raise co-driver and speech, then lower competing engine, effects, music, and surfaces sliders.
- Match output mode: Use Headphones for a headset and TV or stereo for a two-speaker/HDMI setup. Use a surround mode only when the corresponding speakers are physically connected.
- Inspect platform routing: Select the actual output device, check the per-app mixer, and disable spatial or virtual-surround processing for the test.
- Check voice-chat input: Select the intended microphone, remove hardware mute, confirm privacy permission, and verify the push-to-talk binding.
- Restart after device changes: Relaunch the game so it re-enumerates the default output and input devices.
- Swap one component: Test built-in speakers instead of the headset, or the headset instead of HDMI. A change in result identifies whether the original device or route is responsible.
- Compare another game: If dialogue fails in every game, troubleshoot the platform, driver, receiver, or headset. If only one title fails, use that title’s support route.
Targeted fixes for common symptoms
“I cannot hear the co-driver, but all other game audio works.”
- Confirm the co-driver voice switch is enabled.
- Raise both co-driver and speech sliders, then reduce engine and effects.
- Switch to Headphones or stereo/TV mastering for one test run.
- If speech returns in stereo, inspect the surround or center-channel route rather than continuing to raise Master.
“The co-driver is audible but too quiet.”
- Raise Master and Co-Driver in small increments.
- Lower Engine, Effects, Music, and Surfaces to preserve headroom for calls.
- Use Headphones mode with a headset or a simple stereo mode with two speakers.
- Check the headset’s own volume and game/chat balance controls; a platform balance control can reduce game dialogue without changing the game slider.
“The game audio works, but friends cannot hear my voice.”
- Watch the operating system’s microphone meter while speaking.
- Select the headset microphone explicitly and remove any hardware mute.
- Allow microphone access in platform privacy settings.
- Bind and hold the game’s push-to-speak action. Confirm that the assigned key or button is detected.
- Test the microphone in another application. If it fails there, stay in the operating-system and hardware branch rather than changing co-driver settings.
“I hear other players, but they cannot hear me.”
Your output route is functioning, so concentrate on the microphone input route: selected device, permission, mute state, push-to-talk binding, and any chat-party privacy restriction. Ask another player to confirm whether they receive a transmission when the push-to-talk indicator appears.
“Dialogue disappears only through my receiver or TV.”
Power the receiver and display before launching the game, verify the active HDMI endpoint, and use stereo/PCM temporarily. If stereo restores speech, reconnect the surround path one component at a time and verify the center speaker and channel assignment.

“A headset works, but the TV does not,” or the reverse
This contrast isolates the output path. Keep the game’s voice switch and sliders unchanged, then compare the platform output selection, mastering mode, and channel layout for each device. Do not assume that a headset profile is appropriate for HDMI speakers.
Choose a simple hardware test
A stereo gaming headset with a microphone is a useful optional diagnostic device because it supplies a dedicated headphone output and a separate microphone input. Use a model compatible with your platform, connect it directly, and test with virtual-surround processing disabled. If co-driver speech and voice chat both work through the headset, the original TV/receiver route is the likely fault. If neither works, return to the game setting, platform permission, and microphone-selection checks.
This is a troubleshooting aid, not proof that a particular headset is required. Confirm platform compatibility before buying; prices, stock, connectors, and console support vary.
When to contact official support
Escalate after you have confirmed the game voice control, tested a matching stereo output, restarted after device changes, and reproduced the fault on a second output or input where possible.
- EA SPORTS WRC: Use the official WRC support hub for connection troubleshooting, PC diagnosis with DxDiag, and crash or freezing guidance. Include your platform, output device, mastering mode, and the exact symptom (silent speech, low speech, or failed microphone).
- DiRT Rally 2.0: Game-specific support is limited. General EA troubleshooting and community routes remain available, but describe your complete test sequence so helpers can distinguish a game setting from an operating-system or surround-routing problem.
Provide reproducible details: whether engine and effects play, which output mode works, whether stereo restores dialogue, whether the microphone meter moves, and whether another game has the same fault. Those observations are more actionable than reporting only that “voice chat is broken.”
Quick Recap
Keep the working configuration stable
- Connect and select the intended headset, TV, or receiver before launching the game.
- Keep a known-good stereo test configuration so you can quickly separate game settings from surround routing.
- Record your co-driver, speech, and competing-volume levels before experimenting with updates or new audio devices.
- After changing a Windows or console default device, relaunch the game rather than assuming it will switch live.
- For voice chat, verify the microphone mute state and push-to-talk key at the start of an online session.
