If Windows stops with “VMM32.VXD is required to run Windows”, first determine whether the file is missing, the WindowsSystem folder was renamed, or the DOS PATH no longer points to that folder. A different message—“Unpacking Vmm32.vxd, library invalid or wrong version”—usually requires disabling specific commands in AUTOEXEC.BAT. The procedures below apply to the Windows 95, Windows 98 and Windows 98 Second Edition startup problems documented by Microsoft.
What VMM32.VXD is and why Windows will not start without it
VMM32.VXD is a core Windows 9x virtual-device-driver file. Windows 95 and Windows 98 build and load this file during startup, so the loader must be able to find it in the expected system location and use the correct version. The error does not identify one universal fault: a missing or renamed system folder, a broken DOS search path, and malformed startup commands produce different symptoms.

These are legacy Windows 9x errors. Windows XP and later do not use the same VxD startup architecture, so copying a VMM32.VXD file onto a modern Windows installation is not a repair. If you are working on an old computer, preserve the existing files before changing them and use installation media that matches the installed Windows edition whenever reinstallation becomes necessary.

Microsoft’s archived KB194679 covers the missing-file and path case. KB296579 covers the invalid-version/unpacking message, and KB188867 describes the broader Windows 98 startup-isolation workflow. Their last review dates were in the mid-2000s, so the interfaces and commands below are specifically for those Windows 9x releases.
Repair “VMM32.VXD is required to run Windows”
1. Open a command prompt
Boot to a DOS command prompt, or choose a startup option that leaves you at a command prompt instead of attempting a normal Windows load. Do not guess the file’s location from memory; search the drive first.
2. Search every directory for the file
- At the prompt, type
dir vmm32.vxd /sand press Enter. - Record the complete directory reported for every result. The location matters because the documented fix depends on whether the expected system folder is present, missing or renamed.
- If the command returns no result, skip to the reinstallation section below. Microsoft’s KB194679 instruction is to install Windows 95 or Windows 98 again when no copy of the file can be found.
The search is read-only. It does not modify the disk, and it prevents the common mistake of creating a new folder or copying an unrelated version before you know what is already available.
3. Restore a renamed Windows system folder
If the search finds VMM32.VXD inside a folder that should be the Windows system directory but is no longer named System, restore that name. Change to the Windows directory, identify the actual folder name you recorded, and rename that folder to system. For example, if the search showed a mistakenly renamed folder such as C:WINDOWSSYSTEM1, the operation is conceptually:
cd windows
ren system1 system
Substitute the real folder name from your search; do not rename a folder merely because it looks similar. If a correctly named C:WINDOWSSYSTEM directory already exists, do not overwrite it. Resolve duplicate or ambiguous folders first, keeping a backup of any files you move.

This allows for data transfer speeds of up to 5 Gbps (625 MB/s), almost 10 times faster than USB 2.0. The data cable under the drive has type-A and type-C 2 kinds of USB connectors, making it easier to connect most laptops or desktop PCs without an adapter required.
- 【Separate Power Supply Cord】Modern ultra-thin laptops may reduce the USB port’s output power to conserve energy and extend battery life, which can prevent high-power external devices from receiving sufficient power. To address this power shortage, we provide an additional power cable, allowing you to supplement power from a USB power adapter or a power bank to ensure the stable operation of the optical disc drive. You can remove the power cord if the USB disk drive can get enough power through a single data cable. (Note: The power cord is not a data cable; avoid using it independently.)
4. Correct the DOS PATH
When the file exists but Windows still says it is required, the DOS search path may not include the system directory. Open AUTOEXEC.BAT in a text editor and ensure that the Windows system directory is included. Microsoft’s published example is:
path=c:windowssystem
Use the drive and Windows directory that actually belong to this installation. If AUTOEXEC.BAT already contains other required directories, preserve those entries while adding the Windows system directory in the same PATH statement. Save the file as plain text with the original name, close the editor, and restart the computer.
5. Test the result
After restarting, check whether Windows reaches the desktop without the VMM32.VXD message. If it does, avoid making additional startup-file changes until you have copied the repaired AUTOEXEC.BAT and noted which folder name was corrected. If the same message returns, repeat the file search and verify the spelling and location of both Windows and System; a PATH entry that points to a different Windows directory will not help.
Repair “Unpacking Vmm32.vxd, library invalid or wrong version”
This wording is not simply another way of saying that VMM32.VXD is absent. KB296579 attributes it to an improperly written statement in AUTOEXEC.BAT. Treating it as a missing-file problem can leave the offending startup commands in place.
1. Start Safe Mode Command Prompt Only
- Restart Windows 98 and hold CTRL while the computer starts.
- Choose Safe Mode Command Prompt Only from the startup menu.
- At the DOS prompt, open
C:AUTOEXEC.BATin a text editor.
2. Comment out the documented VMM32 commands
Find the lines that perform the conditional copy operation and the lines invoking devlib -u vmm32.vxd, replcldr and devlib -p vmm32.vxd. Do not delete them: prefix each affected line with rem so DOS skips it while retaining a reversible record. The result should leave the command text intact after rem, for example:

The exact conditional-copy and replcldr arguments can differ between installations; comment out the listed statements rather than retyping them from memory. Save AUTOEXEC.BAT, exit the editor, and restart normally.

3. Undo the change only after a successful test
If Windows starts, keep a backup of the edited file and document which lines were disabled. Re-enable one line at a time only if you know a particular application requires it, restarting between changes. If the invalid-version message returns, comment that line out again. If startup still fails immediately, continue with the broader isolation workflow instead of repeatedly editing the same commands.
What to do when the search finds no VMM32.VXD
KB194679 states that when DIR VMM32.VXD /S finds nothing, Windows 95 or Windows 98 must be installed again. This is different from downloading a replacement file from an unknown site: VMM32.VXD is assembled for the installed Windows environment, and an arbitrary copy may be the wrong edition or version.
- Back up personal files from the DOS prompt or another bootable environment before reinstalling.
- Use original Windows 95, Windows 98 or Windows 98 Second Edition media that matches the installed release where possible.
- Verify that the disc is authentic, licensed for your situation and compatible with the computer’s original installation.
- Record hardware drivers and product information before starting; a reinstall can require those items again.
- After setup completes, apply only updates and drivers intended for that Windows 9x edition, then restore personal files.
If the computer cannot read the installation media, stop before formatting or deleting files and obtain a reliable backup path. The documented remedy is reinstallation, but the data-preservation work must happen first.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use Safe Mode to separate a VxD problem from other startup failures
When normal startup fails but the file is present, Safe Mode is the safest diagnostic branch. Microsoft describes Safe Mode as bypassing the current real-mode configuration and loading a minimal protected-mode configuration. That difference helps show whether a startup entry, terminate-and-stay-resident program (TSR), registry setting or protected-mode driver is responsible.

Start Safe Mode and observe the result
- Restart and hold CTRL to display the Windows 98 startup menu.
- Choose Safe Mode rather than Command Prompt Only.
- If Safe Mode reaches Windows, note whether the VMM32.VXD message disappears. Do not install new drivers or utilities while diagnosing.
- If Safe Mode also fails, return to a command prompt and use the file-search and
AUTOEXEC.BATprocedures before moving to reinstallation.
Use Msconfig selective startup
From Safe Mode, open the System Configuration Utility (msconfig) and choose selective startup. Test the configuration categories one at a time instead of disabling everything permanently:
SYSTEM.INIandWIN.INIentriesAUTOEXEC.BATandCONFIG.SYScommands- Programs launched from the Startup folder
- TSRs and other real-mode utilities
Restart after each controlled change and record the result. When the failure disappears, restore entries in small groups until the offending item is identified. This confirms a cause without losing the original configuration.
Check the registry with Registry Checker
If the failure began after a configuration change or an unexpected shutdown, run Windows 98 Registry Checker (scanreg) and use an available healthy registry backup when appropriate. Keep the current registry backed up before replacing it. Registry recovery addresses registry damage; it does not repair a physically missing VMM32.VXD file.
Run System File Checker when system files may be damaged
Use Windows 98 System File Checker to compare protected system files and restore a damaged file from matching installation media. Follow its prompts and identify the source media before approving a replacement. A successful file check does not prove that AUTOEXEC.BAT or the PATH is correct, so retest startup afterward.
Read BOOTLOG.TXT for failed loads
Enable boot logging from the startup menu and inspect BOOTLOG.TXT after the attempt. The log records driver-load status; entries containing LoadFail identify components that did not load. Compare those entries with the moment the startup process stops. Keep a copy of the log before another boot overwrites it.
Use step-by-step confirmation for a suspected VxD
Windows 98 can ask for confirmation of each startup component. Confirm entries individually and note the first item that causes the failure. Microsoft notes that this process helps identify a damaged VxD and prevents external VxDs in WindowsSystemVmm32 from overriding internal VxDs. Once the offending file or entry is known, restore the correct version from matching media or remove the conflicting startup reference rather than deleting unrelated drivers.
Decision guide: choose the branch that matches your evidence
| Evidence | Next action | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Exact message says the file is required; search finds it in a wrongly named folder | Rename the folder to System, restart and retest. |
The loader can find the file only after the expected directory name is restored. |
| File exists, but the system folder is correct and startup still reports it missing | Repair AUTOEXEC.BAT so PATH includes WindowsSystem. |
KB194679 identifies a missing PATH entry as a cause. |
| Search finds no copy | Back up data and reinstall the matching Windows 95/98 edition. | That is Microsoft’s documented remedy when the file is absent. |
| Message says the library is invalid or the wrong version while unpacking | In Safe Mode Command Prompt Only, comment out the listed copy, devlib and replcldr lines. |
KB296579 attributes this variant to malformed AUTOEXEC.BAT statements. |
| Safe Mode works but normal startup does not | Use msconfig selective startup, then Registry Checker, System File Checker and boot logging as indicated. |
The difference points toward a startup entry, TSR, registry, system-file or protected-mode-driver cause. |
| Safe Mode and normal startup both fail after the documented repairs | Preserve data, inspect BOOTLOG.TXT and prepare a matching reinstallation. |
Further edits without evidence risk compounding the configuration damage. |
Common mistakes that make the problem worse
- Using the wrong procedure for the message: the unpacking error is handled through
AUTOEXEC.BAT; it is not automatically evidence that VMM32.VXD is missing. - Renaming the wrong folder: use the directory returned by
dir vmm32.vxd /sand confirm that a validWindowsSystemfolder is not already present. - Overwriting PATH blindly: keep required existing directories while ensuring the Windows system directory is included.
- Deleting startup lines instead of commenting them: prefix with
remso the change can be reversed. - Mixing Windows editions: a file or installation disc from another release can create a version mismatch.
- Skipping backups: copy personal data,
AUTOEXEC.BAT,CONFIG.SYS, registry backups and boot logs before experimenting. - Installing modern software as a test: Windows 9x VxD failures require a controlled legacy configuration; adding unrelated drivers obscures the cause.
When the manual process is complete
A successful repair should be demonstrated by a normal restart into Windows without either VMM32.VXD message. Keep the corrected folder name, PATH line or commented startup entries documented, and retain the original files in a backup location. If the problem returns after a later driver or startup change, compare that change with the saved configuration and repeat the narrow diagnostic branch instead of replacing the entire system immediately.
Quick Recap
As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can look for common Windows issues, damaged system elements, invalid redirects and shared DLL problems, and it includes cleanup, vulnerability checks and an app-crash log; it runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7, offers a free trial by category for at least two days, and then requires a subscription. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.
