How to Fix Veeam Error 0x80004005 During VSS Unfreeze

Veeam error 0x80004005 is a generic failure code, not a diagnosis. During a message such as Failed to call RPC function 'Vss.Unfreeze', the useful evidence is the VSS writer or provider named nearby, the writer state, the Windows event recorded at the same time, and whether a native Windows shadow-copy test also fails.

The title’s 0X800004005 spelling should be checked against the original job log: Veeam material and incident reports commonly show 0x80004005. Work from the affected Windows guest outward—writers, services, providers, logs, storage, then the Veeam job—rather than repeatedly retrying an unchanged job.

What Veeam error 0x80004005 means

The hexadecimal value is an unspecified wrapper (HRESULT). It can accompany a failed VSS freeze or unfreeze, a provider problem, a stopped or disabled service, insufficient shadow-copy space, an application writer fault, or another Windows configuration issue. A Veeam forum case shows the exact text Failed to call RPC function ‘Vss.Unfreeze’: Error code: 0x80004005; the same log identifies a failed critical writer. That is why the writer name and the preceding Windows event matter more than the code alone. Veeam R&D Forums case

Veeam describes this class of failure as typically caused by system configuration or other software preventing a shadow copy. Its guidance recommends testing VSS outside Veeam to isolate the fault. Veeam KB1796 Veeam KB1980

Before changing anything

  • Record the affected VM or physical guest, job name, failure time, operating-system version, and the complete Veeam error line.
  • Copy the writer name, provider name, HRESULT, and any event ID shown immediately before the failure.
  • Confirm whether the code is exactly 0x80004005 or a different string such as 0x800004005. Do not choose a fix from a mistyped or truncated value.
  • Plan a maintenance window before restarting a production server or a service used by an application.
  • Do not remove a VSS provider until you know which storage, backup, migration, or application product installed it and whether another workflow depends on it.

Step-by-step repair sequence

1. Check every VSS writer

On the affected Windows guest, open Command Prompt as administrator and run:

vssadmin list writers

Every writer should report State: [1] Stable and Last error: No error. A writer that is failed, waiting, or reporting an error is the first repair target. Note its exact display name and the service or application it belongs to.

Rebooting the guest can return a transient writer to a stable state. If a particular writer remains failed, restart the service associated with that writer when the application’s availability requirements allow it. Veeam documents rebooting and writer-service restarts as initial stabilization steps. Veeam KB1980

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run vssadmin list writers again after the restart. Do not proceed on the assumption that a reboot worked: the output must show all writers stable with no error.

  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

2. Correlate Application and System events

Open Event Viewer and inspect Windows Logs > Application and Windows Logs > System around the Veeam failure time. Look for VSS, VolSnap, disk, service-control, application, and provider events, then correlate their timestamps with the job log.

Export or save the relevant events before clearing logs or making changes. An event that names a database, volume, service, provider, access failure, or space condition often identifies the actionable cause that the wrapper code hides. Veeam’s guest-processing guidance specifically points to these logs for configuration and software faults. Veeam KB1796

3. Reproduce the operation with Diskshadow

Run a Diskshadow test on the affected Windows Server. Diskshadow is useful here because it exercises Windows VSS without the Veeam job layer and most closely reproduces the shadow-copy operation Veeam uses. Start an elevated prompt and launch:

diskshadow

Use the test procedure appropriate to the server and volumes, then record whether the shadow-copy operation completes and which writer or provider fails. Veeam’s KB1980 provides the recommended testing approach. Veeam KB1980

Seagate Portable 1TB External Hard Drive HDD – USB 3.0 for PC, Mac, PlayStation, & Xbox, 1-Year Rescue Service (STGX1000400) , Black
  • Easily store and access 1TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop. Reformatting may be required for Mac
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.
  • Diskshadow fails: repair the Windows writer, provider, service, volume, or application first. Changing Veeam settings will not correct a native VSS failure.
  • Diskshadow succeeds: compare the Veeam guest-processing account, selected volumes, application-aware processing settings, and job timing. The problem may be specific to the Veeam workflow or to a condition that appears only during the job.

4. Enumerate providers and check required services

At an elevated prompt, run:

vssadmin list providers

Record every provider. Microsoft’s built-in provider is expected; third-party entries may have been installed by storage, backup, replication, migration, or application software. An unexpected or obsolete provider can intercept snapshot operations, but its purpose must be understood before it is disabled or removed. Veeam discusses provider conflicts and identification in KB1785.

Open services.msc and verify that Volume Shadow Copy and Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider are not configured as Disabled. Start or restart them only in accordance with your server’s maintenance requirements. A service that is stopped at the moment of the job can produce a VSS error even when writers looked healthy earlier.

5. Verify free space and shadow-storage allocation

Check every involved NTFS volume, including the system volume and any volume selected for application-aware processing. Confirm both ordinary free space and the shadow-copy storage association. A busy volume can need substantially more temporary space than a minimal snapshot.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Veeam’s storage guidance cites roughly 15–20% free space for busy volumes as operational guidance, not a guarantee for every workload. The same guidance notes that Microsoft Support has recommended at least 42 MB free on the system-reserved partition. Treat those figures as conditions to investigate, not universal thresholds. Seagate Portable 4TB External Hard Drive HDD – USB 3.0, 1-Year Rescue | Everyday HDD storage. Plug-and-play backup. Windows & macOS. Adobe CC trial included. 1-Year Warranty

  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.
  • Delete or move data only under your normal retention and change-control rules.
  • Expand the volume when capacity planning permits.
  • Review the shadow-storage allocation and redirect it to an appropriate volume when that design is supported.
  • Repeat the Diskshadow test after the change, then check writers again.

6. Check the Veeam repository and paths

A guest-side VSS failure and a repository-side storage fault can occur in the same job. Confirm that the repository is reachable, has usable capacity, and is not reporting disk or network errors. Review the repository definition for accidental overlap: nested repository paths or definitions pointing into one another can create confusing storage behavior.

A repository is the location where Veeam stores backup files, VM copies, and replica metadata. Verify its configuration in the Veeam console and compare it with the actual path and permissions. Veeam Help Center: backup repositories

7. Retry only after native VSS is healthy

When all writers show stable and no error, the relevant services are available, the provider list is understood, storage has adequate headroom, and Diskshadow succeeds, retry the Veeam job. Capture the new session log even if it succeeds; it provides a useful comparison with the failed run.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Diskshadow still fails, continue troubleshooting the named writer, provider, application, or volume rather than changing job settings at random. If Diskshadow succeeds but Veeam continues to fail, compare the job’s guest-processing configuration and account permissions with the successful native test, then collect diagnostics for support.

8. Collect a support-ready evidence set

For an unresolved case, gather:

  • The complete Veeam session and guest-processing logs, including the first VSS error rather than only the final wrapper code.
  • Output from vssadmin list writers and vssadmin list providers taken near the failure.
  • The Diskshadow result and the script or test sequence used.
  • Application and System Event Viewer exports covering the failure window.
  • The affected volumes’ free-space and shadow-storage details.
  • The Veeam job configuration, guest operating-system version, and repository path.

This evidence lets Veeam Support distinguish a guest application fault from VSS infrastructure, storage, or job-configuration behavior.

Choosing the right repair path

Observed condition Most likely scope Next action
A writer is not Stable or reports an error Guest application or writer service Identify the writer, restart its associated service when safe, reboot if appropriate, and retest.
Diskshadow fails with the same writer or provider Windows VSS, provider, application, or storage Repair that component outside Veeam before retrying the job.
Diskshadow succeeds but Veeam fails Veeam guest-processing configuration or job-specific conditions Compare account, selected volumes, processing options, timing, and logs.
An unfamiliar third-party provider appears Provider interaction or obsolete software Identify its owner and purpose; do not disable or remove it blindly.
Volumes have low free space or inadequate shadow storage Snapshot capacity Reclaim or expand space, or redirect shadow storage where supported, then retest.
Repository is unreachable or paths overlap Veeam storage configuration Correct reachability and repository definitions and verify the actual storage path.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Treating 0x80004005 as the root cause: it is a wrapper; the writer, provider, and event details provide the diagnosis.
  • Retrying without changing the condition: repeated retries do not repair a failed writer, disabled service, or full volume.
  • Removing every non-Microsoft provider: a provider may belong to an active storage or replication product. Identify dependencies first.
  • Checking only the repository: application-aware processing runs VSS in the guest, so repository health does not prove guest health.
  • Assuming a reboot is permanent: a writer can return to Stable temporarily and fail again when its application or workload resumes.
  • Using only the final job error: preserve the preceding VSS and Event Viewer entries; they often contain the specific failure.

As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can diagnose and address some common Windows issues, including broken system elements, shared DLL problems, settings that add CPU, RAM or disk load, temporary-file buildup, and application-crash records.
