The supported fix for a “vcomp110.dll is missing” or “not found” message is to install or repair Microsoft Visual C++ 2012 Redistributable Update 4. Choose the package that matches the affected program: x86 for a 32-bit app and x64 for a 64-bit app. On 64-bit Windows, install both when you cannot identify the app’s architecture.
What vcomp110.dll is and why Windows needs it
vcomp110.dll is an OpenMP runtime library from the Visual C++ 2012 (VC110) runtime. OpenMP lets a C or C++ application divide work among multiple processor threads. Programs built with Visual Studio 2012 can therefore expect this file to be present even when Visual Studio itself is not installed.

Microsoft describes the redistributable this way: “The Microsoft Visual C++ 2012 Redistributable Packages install runtime components of Visual C++ Libraries required to run applications developed with Visual Studio 2012 using C++ on a computer that does not have Visual Studio 2012 installed.” The file is installed as part of the complete runtime package, in Microsoft.VC110.OpenMP folders for x86, x64 and ARM builds.

Typical messages include:
- “vcomp110.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because vcomp110.dll was not found.”
- “The program can’t start because vcomp110.dll is missing.”
- “vcomp110.dll not found.”
These messages normally mean that the application’s required VC110 runtime is absent, damaged, or the wrong architecture. They do not identify the cause by themselves, so installing an unrelated DLL can leave the underlying runtime problem unresolved.

Use the official Visual C++ 2012 Update 4 package
Microsoft’s supported distribution method is the Visual C++ 2012 (VC++ 11.0) Redistributable Update 4 installer. Open Microsoft’s “Latest Supported Visual C++ Redistributable Downloads” page and select the Visual Studio 2012 (VC++ 11.0) Update 4 links. The page lists version 11.0.61030.0 for both the x86 and x64 packages (Microsoft, 2026).
Download the installer from Microsoft rather than a website offering an individual .dll file. The redistributable places the runtime components in the locations and with the servicing information expected by Windows applications.
Choose x86, x64 or both
The package architecture must match the application, not merely the Windows edition. A 64-bit version of Windows can run 32-bit programs, and those programs still require the x86 runtime.
| Affected application | Package to install | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|
| 32-bit (x86) | Visual C++ 2012 Update 4 x86 | Most older 32-bit desktop applications and games |
| 64-bit (x64) | Visual C++ 2012 Update 4 x64 | A program built specifically for 64-bit Windows |
| Architecture unknown on 64-bit Windows | Install both x86 and x64 | The two runtimes can be installed side by side and cover either application type |
| ARM application | The corresponding ARM runtime, if the application vendor supplies one | Only for software built for an ARM Windows environment |
If the error appears when launching a 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows, installing only x64 will not solve it. Conversely, a 64-bit application cannot use the x86 runtime in place of x64.
Install or repair the runtime step by step
- Close the affected application. Exit it completely. If it is frozen, open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc, select the program, and choose End task.
- Open Microsoft’s download page. Find the section labeled Visual Studio 2012 (VC++ 11.0) Update 4 under the latest supported Visual C++ redistributable downloads.
- Download the required installer. Select x86 for a 32-bit program, x64 for a 64-bit program, or both on 64-bit Windows when the program type is unknown. Keep the installer for the matching architecture; do not rename it.
- Run the installer with permission to change Windows. Open the downloaded file and approve the User Account Control prompt. If Windows asks for administrator credentials, use an account authorized to install software.
- Choose Repair when offered. If the setup dialog reports that the runtime is already installed, select Repair. Repair replaces missing or damaged runtime components without requiring you to remove the package first.
- Complete setup and restart Windows. A restart ensures that applications do not retain an old runtime process or file state.
- Launch the affected application again. Start it from its normal shortcut. If you installed only one architecture and the same message returns, install the other package as well when using 64-bit Windows.
Microsoft requires the installed package to be at least as recent as the MSVC build tools used to create the application. Update 4 is the final Visual C++ 2012 redistributable release listed for this runtime generation, so use that release rather than an earlier VC110 installer.
Repair or reinstall the application if the DLL error remains
A runtime installation cannot correct a damaged application installation, an incorrect private copy of the runtime, or a program that was built against another dependency. After installing the correct redistributable, use the application’s own maintenance options.
- Open Settings and go to Apps then Installed apps (the label may appear as Apps & features on older Windows versions).
- Select the affected program. If it offers Advanced options, choose Repair or Reset only when the vendor documents what those choices do.
- If no repair option exists, uninstall the application from its official uninstaller.
- Restart Windows, download the current installer from the application vendor, and install it again. Avoid repackaged installers that bundle unknown DLL files.
- Apply any application-specific update supplied by the vendor, then test the program before restoring optional plug-ins or modifications.
Back up application settings, saved games, projects and license information before uninstalling. Some uninstallers remove local data, while others leave it in place; the vendor’s documentation is the authority for that behavior.
Troubleshoot a failed redistributable installation
The installer will not start
- Confirm that the downloaded file completed and was obtained from Microsoft’s official download page. Download it again if the file is incomplete.
- Right-click the installer, select Properties, and check whether Windows shows an Unblock option on the General tab. If present, select it, apply the change, and run the installer again.
- Sign in with an administrator account or ask an administrator to perform the installation. Windows Installer permissions can prevent a system runtime from being changed.
- Temporarily close other installers and restart Windows before trying again. Do not delete random files from the Windows or application directories to make setup proceed.
Setup reports another installation is in progress
Restart Windows and try the redistributable before launching another installer. If the message persists, use Settings then Apps to finish or remove the pending program installation, and consult Microsoft’s redistributable-installation troubleshooting guidance.
Repair completes but the same message appears
- Check that the application’s architecture and the installed package agree. Install x86 as well as x64 on 64-bit Windows when uncertain.
- Verify that you installed VC++ 2012 Update 4, not only a newer Visual C++ release. Newer v14 redistributables do not replace VC110 for an application that specifically requests
vcomp110.dll. - Reinstall the affected application using its official installer. A program may ship a private, damaged copy or expect additional files that the redistributable cannot provide.
- Look for a vendor patch or support article naming
vcomp110.dll. Microsoft advises contacting the application vendor when updating the runtime does not resolve the application problem.
The error occurs only for one user account
Sign in with another Windows account and test the program. If it works there, the problem may be in the first account’s application settings, permissions or profile rather than the system runtime. Follow the application vendor’s profile-reset procedure instead of copying a DLL between user folders.

The error returns after every reboot
Record which application triggers it, the exact message, Windows edition and whether the program is 32-bit or 64-bit. Check whether security software or a cleanup utility is quarantining or deleting runtime files, and review its event log. Restore only files identified by the vendor or Microsoft; do not add an arbitrary replacement DLL.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why downloading a standalone DLL is unsafe
Random DLL-download sites, renamed files and copies taken from another computer are unreliable fixes. The file may come from a different VC110 build, have the wrong architecture, be modified, or omit related runtime components. Copying it into C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64 or an application folder can also create version conflicts and bypass Windows servicing and integrity checks.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDo not rename another OpenMP or Visual C++ DLL to vcomp110.dll. A filename does not make a binary compatible: the application expects particular exported functions and a specific runtime generation. Do not install a “DLL fixer” that promises to replace system files automatically. The complete Microsoft redistributable is the supported way to obtain this runtime.
How VC++ 2012 relates to newer Visual C++ packages
Visual C++ redistributables are runtime generations. VC110 identifies Visual Studio 2012; newer v14 packages cover later Visual Studio toolsets. They are not interchangeable simply because both are labeled “Visual C++.”
| Option | What it addresses | Suitability for a vcomp110.dll error |
|---|---|---|
| VC++ 2012 Update 4 x86 | VC110 components for 32-bit applications | Correct choice for a 32-bit program |
| VC++ 2012 Update 4 x64 | VC110 components for 64-bit applications | Correct choice for a 64-bit program |
| Both VC++ 2012 architectures | Side-by-side support on 64-bit Windows | Best when the application architecture is unknown |
| Newer v14 redistributable only | Later Visual Studio runtime generation | Not a substitute when the application explicitly requires VC110 |
| Standalone DLL from a third party | An unverified individual file | Not recommended; it can be wrong, altered or incomplete |
Support status and what it means for legacy software
Microsoft marks Visual Studio 2012 (VC++ 11.0) Update 4 as no longer supported. Its extended support ended January 10, 2023 (Microsoft, 2023). The final x86 and x64 packages remain available for legacy applications, but the end of support means there will not be normal future security or compatibility updates for that toolset.
Installing the final redistributable can make an older application run; it does not modernize the application or guarantee compatibility with every current Windows update. Keep the application patched by its vendor, use a supported Windows release, and avoid running software obtained from unknown sources.
Verification checklist
- The installer came from Microsoft’s Visual Studio 2012 Update 4 section.
- The package architecture matches the application, or both x86 and x64 were installed on 64-bit Windows when the architecture was unknown.
- Setup completed with Repair or Install, and Windows was restarted.
- The application was tested from its normal shortcut rather than by launching a copied executable.
- If the error persisted, the application was repaired or reinstalled from its official installer.
- The exact error, application version and installer result were recorded before contacting the application vendor.
As an optional shortcut after trying the manual steps, Outbyte PC Repair can look for common Windows issues, including broken system elements and shared DLL problems, and offers a free trial by category for at least two days before a subscription; it complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.
When to contact the application vendor
Contact the vendor when VC++ 2012 Update 4 is installed and repaired, the correct architecture is present, and an official application reinstall still produces the message. Include the exact text of the error, application name and version, Windows edition and architecture, whether x86 or x64 (or both) were installed, and any setup error code or log entry. Microsoft specifically directs users to the application vendor for instructions when a runtime update does not solve an application issue.
That information lets the vendor determine whether the program needs a particular build, an additional dependency, a corrected installer or a compatibility update. It also avoids repeated attempts to replace a system DLL that is not the real cause.
