VBoxRT.dll is part of Oracle VirtualBox, not a Windows system file. If Windows says it is missing, cannot load it, or reports LoadLibrary "…VBoxRT.dll" failed (rc=126), repair the complete VirtualBox installation that produced the message. Do not download a replacement DLL from a third-party site.
Record the exact wording, host operating system, VirtualBox version, architecture, and path shown in the error before changing anything. The correct fix depends on whether the file is absent, blocked by a dependency or permission problem, or named as the module that crashed.

Identify the exact VBoxRT.dll failure

Also note whether the message appears when launching the VirtualBox Manager, starting one virtual machine, or during another application’s startup. What VBoxRT.dll is and why replacing it is risky
Oracle VirtualBox is a cross-platform virtualization product for running other operating systems on macOS, Windows, Linux, and Oracle Solaris hosts. Its Windows installer includes VBoxRT.dll as one component of the application. The DLL is therefore tied to a particular VirtualBox release and to the other binaries installed with that release.
That version relationship is important. Copying a DLL from another computer, an older VirtualBox folder, or a download site can create a mixture of releases. The replacement may have different dependencies or exports and can turn a clear startup error into an unstable installation. A DLL placed in C:WindowsSystem32 is also outside the product’s normal servicing path.
Choose the repair route from the evidence

Prepare before repairing VirtualBox
- Write down the release. Open VirtualBox if it still starts and read the version from its About dialog. If it will not open, check the installer name, an existing shortcut’s properties, or the version shown in the operating system’s installed-apps list.
- Record the host and architecture. Identify the Windows or Linux edition and whether the host is 32-bit or 64-bit. Keep the full path in the error; two installations in different folders can explain why one launch finds a file and another does not.
- Save important VM data. A repair should preserve virtual disks and configuration, but copy irreplaceable virtual-machine folders or snapshots first. Do not delete those folders as part of a DLL repair.
- Close VirtualBox processes. Exit the Manager and any running virtual machines. In Windows Task Manager, check that VirtualBox,
VBoxSVC, and related VirtualBox processes have ended. If a process will not close, restart the host before continuing. - Check security history. Look in the antivirus or endpoint-security quarantine and detection history for a VirtualBox component. Do not restore a file merely because its name matches; restore only an item identified as belonging to the same, trusted VirtualBox installer, and rescan it according to your security product’s procedure.
Windows: repair or reinstall the complete package
1. Restart the computer
A reboot releases DLLs held by a service or a stalled virtual machine and gives the installer a clean session. After signing in, reproduce the error once and keep the exact text available.

Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps (or Apps & features on older Windows versions), select Oracle VM VirtualBox, and look for Modify, Repair, or a similar installer-maintenance command. The label depends on the release and Windows edition. Let the installer complete, restart Windows, and test the same action that failed.
If no repair command is offered, do not improvise by replacing only VBoxRT.dll. Continue with a complete reinstall.

3. Remove a conflicting or damaged installation
From the same installed-apps page, uninstall the VirtualBox copy that is incomplete or conflicts with another copy. If you deliberately installed both a vendor package and a distribution package, keep only the source you intend to maintain. Reboot after removal if Windows reports that files or services were in use.
Uninstalling the application is not the same as deleting virtual disks. Read each prompt carefully and preserve VM folders, disk images, and snapshots unless you have a separate backup and intentionally want to remove them.
4. Install one matching release from Oracle’s official channel
Use Oracle’s official VirtualBox documentation and download channel to obtain the release that matches your host architecture and the version required by your virtual machines or management tools. Install the complete package, not an individual runtime file. If the error named a particular installation directory, avoid leaving an older copy in that directory while testing the new one.
Allow the installer to install its companion binaries, services, and drivers. Accepting only a partial feature set can leave the runtime incomplete. When installation finishes, reboot if requested before opening a VM.
5. Test with a controlled launch
Open VirtualBox Manager and start a small, known-good virtual machine. If that works, test the VM that originally failed. A successful Manager launch proves that the basic runtime loads; it does not prove that every guest configuration or host driver is healthy.

When VBoxRT.dll exists but Windows still cannot load it
A file can be present while Windows reports “The specified module could not be found.” In that situation, the missing item may be a dependency rather than VBoxRT.dll itself.
Check the path and release
Use the path shown in the error and the VirtualBox installation directory to confirm that the file belongs to the copy you are launching. Avoid relying on a similarly named file in another VirtualBox folder. A 32-bit/64-bit mismatch or a release mismatch can make a present DLL unloadable.
Inspect Windows diagnostics
Open Event Viewer and review Windows Logs → Application around the time of the failure. Look for the application name, faulting module, or a side-by-side or dependency error. Record the event details; they can distinguish an application crash from a missing dependency.
Review permissions and security blocks
Confirm that your account and the VirtualBox service can read and execute the installation directory. Do not broadly grant write access to system folders. If security software blocked or quarantined a companion file, resolve that event using the security product’s documented process, then reinstall the complete package so every file comes from the same installer.
Eliminate mixed installations
Multiple VirtualBox releases can leave services, shortcuts, and search paths pointing at different directories. Remove obsolete copies, reboot, and install one release cleanly. This is especially important when an Oracle package and an operating-system distribution package were both used.

Linux: handle VBoxRT.so and package conflicts
Linux normally reports a shared object such as VBoxRT.so, not the Windows DLL name. The same principle applies: repair the complete VirtualBox installation rather than copying one library.
Check whether package sources are mixed
Determine whether VirtualBox came from Oracle or from your distribution’s package repository. Mixing those sources can leave libraries, services, and kernel modules from different releases. Choose one source, remove the conflicting package using your distribution’s normal package-management tools, and reinstall the complete matching package.
Verify ownership and permissions
Inspect the ownership and read/execute permissions of the VirtualBox installation and the directory containing the shared library. Correct ownership using your distribution’s standard administration procedure; do not make the entire installation world-writable. If the error began after moving files between disks or restoring a backup, ownership changes are a plausible cause.
Rebuild or reconcile host modules
After a kernel update, VirtualBox may need its host kernel modules rebuilt. Follow Oracle’s troubleshooting guidance for your Linux release and kernel. Also check for conflicts with other virtualization or security modules. The exact commands vary by distribution, so use the package and kernel-module tools documented for your host rather than copying commands intended for another distribution.

Retest after a clean reboot
Restart Linux after reinstalling or rebuilding modules, then launch VirtualBox and a test VM. If the shared-object error remains, capture the loader message, package versions, ownership output, and kernel version for the next diagnostic step.

If VBoxRT.dll is the faulting module in a crash
Not every VBoxRT.dll reference means “file missing.” A crash report can name VBoxRT.dll as the module in which execution stopped even though the file is intact.
Check the VirtualBox release and the workload that triggers the crash. One reported case involves Windows 11 with VirtualBox 7.1.12 and a virtual machine containing more than 200 snapshots. That pattern points toward a product bug or workload trigger; replacing the DLL with an unrelated copy would not address it.
Test the smallest change first
- Update VirtualBox to a newer maintenance release available through Oracle’s official channel, if one exists for your host.
- Test a VM with fewer snapshots or a simpler configuration, using a backup before changing snapshot chains.
- Check whether the crash is limited to one guest, one host feature, or one operation such as opening the snapshot view.
- Record reproducible steps, the exact VirtualBox version, host build, guest configuration, and crash details for a support or issue report.
Do not delete snapshots or virtual disks simply to make the crash disappear; snapshot chains can contain the only current state of a guest.

- Do not download a standalone vboxrt.dll. Third-party DLL sites cannot guarantee that the file matches your VirtualBox release or its dependencies.
- Do not copy the file into
C:WindowsSystem32. VirtualBox expects its own versioned directory and companion files. - Do not run
regsvr32on VBoxRT.dll. This runtime library is not repaired by registering it as a COM component. - Do not overwrite one DLL inside an otherwise mixed installation. Repair the package that installed it.
- Do not disable security software permanently. Use its quarantine and allow-list procedures only after verifying the installer and the event.
Verify the repair
- The original error no longer appears when opening VirtualBox Manager.
- A test virtual machine starts, pauses, resumes, and shuts down normally.
- The VM that triggered the error behaves the same after a clean reboot.
- Installed-apps information shows one intended VirtualBox release rather than competing copies.
- On Linux, the shared library, package ownership, and host kernel modules all belong to the same installation source and release family.
- Event Viewer or system logs no longer record a new VBoxRT load failure at launch.
If the error returns, preserve the exact message and logs instead of repeatedly replacing files. The decisive details are the host OS, VirtualBox version, architecture, full path, error code, and whether VBoxRT.dll is absent, blocked from loading, or merely named in a crash.
