The quickest low-risk repair is to close the launcher completely, rename its cache folder to cache.old, and start it again. Do not delete your game-library folders. If the crash remains, work through temporary-file cleanup, background-app checks, game-file verification, account-linking checks, and finally a clean Ubisoft Connect reinstall from Ubisoft’s official download page.
What the “unrecoverable error” message means
“Uplay has detected an unrecoverable error and must shut down” is a generic crash message, not a diagnosis of one particular file or Windows component. The current desktop client is called Ubisoft Connect, although older error text and search results still say Uplay.

Corrupted or invalid launcher data, damaged installations, blocked files, overlays, and account or platform handoff problems can produce the same wording. The message alone cannot identify which one is responsible.
Before changing anything
- Confirm that you know the Ubisoft account email, password, and two-factor authentication method.
- Close Steam, Epic Games Launcher, and other game clients involved in launching the title.
- Record the exact message and any crash-dump path. Some installations show a path such as
C:Program Files (x86)UbisoftUbisoft Game Launchercrashes. - Create a restore point or copy the launcher folder if you want an easy rollback.
- Never delete the game installation directory or save folders as a first repair.
Quick fix: rebuild the Ubisoft Connect cache
- Exit Ubisoft Connect from its notification-area icon.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager. End tasks named
Ubisoft Connect,Ubisoft Game Launcher,upc.exe, orUbisoftConnect.exewhen present. Names vary by client version; do not end unrelated Windows processes. - In File Explorer, open
C:Program Files (x86)UbisoftUbisoft Game Launcher. If Ubisoft Connect is installed elsewhere, use the path shown by its shortcut or installed-app entry. - Rename the folder named
cachetocache.old. - Start Ubisoft Connect directly, not through Steam or Epic, and allow it to create a new cache.
Renaming is safer than deleting: it preserves the old data, keeps diagnostic evidence, and allows you to restore it. Resetting the installation cache is a recognized troubleshooting step; Microsoft-hosted guidance documents it here: Microsoft Q&A.

If the client opens normally, the old cache.old folder can be removed later. If Windows says the folder is in use, a Ubisoft process is still running.
If the cache reset does not work
Clear temporary files
- Press Win + R, enter
%TEMP%, and press Enter. - Select the contents and delete what Windows allows. Skip files reported as in use.
For older Uplay installations, community troubleshooting reports also suggest renaming %LOCALAPPDATA%Ubisoft Game Launcher to Ubisoft Game Launcher.old. This resets local launcher state and may sign you out; it is not a universal or officially guaranteed current-client fix. Paste %LOCALAPPDATA% into File Explorer if AppData is hidden.
Restart Windows
Use a full restart to clear file locks and background processes. Afterward, launch Ubisoft Connect directly and sign in before testing a store-launched game.

Use administrator mode only as a test
Right-click the Ubisoft Connect shortcut and choose Run as administrator. If it works only when elevated, investigate folder permissions, Controlled folder access, antivirus blocking, or a broken installation rather than keeping the launcher permanently elevated. If it fails identically, administrator rights are unlikely to be the cause.
Test background software and security controls
Temporarily close nonessential overlays and injectors, including game overlays, hardware-monitoring or overclocking tools, screen recorders, RGB utilities, VPN clients, driver-updater tools, and other game launchers. Test briefly; do not permanently disable antivirus or firewall protection. Re-enable protection immediately and create an exception only when a trusted security product specifically identifies Ubisoft Connect as blocked.
Update Windows and graphics drivers
Install pending Windows updates and obtain graphics drivers directly from NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel, then restart. This is a secondary compatibility check, especially for crashes during game launch, not proof that an outdated driver caused a startup crash. Avoid third-party driver-updater software.

When only one game fails
If Ubisoft Connect stays open and the crash occurs while one title starts, repair the game rather than the whole client.
- Steam: open the game’s Properties and choose the installed-files verification option.
- Epic Games: open the game’s library menu, choose Manage → Verify.
- Ubisoft Connect: open the game’s properties or management menu and use the available verify or repair command; wording varies by version.
Verification addresses game files. It does not repair a launcher that crashes before login.
Steam, Epic, and Ubisoft account-linking problems
A game bought through Steam or Epic is associated with a Ubisoft account. Check that Ubisoft Connect is signed into the account that originally claimed the entitlement. Warning signs include the game being absent from the Ubisoft library, repeated login prompts, or a crash immediately after the store hands off to Ubisoft Connect.

- Launch Ubisoft Connect directly and confirm the signed-in account.
- Start the game from Ubisoft Connect if it is listed there.
- If direct launch works but Steam or Epic does not, check store overlays and the account handoff.
- Do not repeatedly unlink and relink accounts. Entitlements can remain tied to the original Ubisoft account; contact Ubisoft Support before changing ownership links.

Reinstall Ubisoft Connect without reinstalling games
- Note the current launcher path and the locations of your game libraries.
- Uninstall Ubisoft Connect through Windows Installed Apps. Do not remove Steam, Epic, or Ubisoft game folders.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the current client only from Ubisoft’s official download page.
- Install, sign into the owning Ubisoft account, and use the client’s locate, discover, or manage-existing-installation option if your games are not detected automatically.
A normal reinstall may leave AppData, permissions problems, security blocks, or account mismatches behind, so reinstalling alone is not guaranteed to solve the crash. Do not download an old Uplay installer from a third-party site.

Crash before login
- Rename the installation cache.
- Rename the older Local AppData launcher folder if it exists.
- Clear temporary files and restart.
- Test without overlays and security interference.
- Reinstall the current client.
Crash after pressing Play
- Verify the affected game.
- Disable overlays and graphics injectors.
- Update the GPU driver from the manufacturer.
- Confirm the Ubisoft account and store link.
Crash after a recent update
Reset the current client’s cache, test with background applications closed, and check Ubisoft service status. Do not downgrade to an unofficial legacy client.

Collect logs if the problem persists
- Press the Windows key, search for Event Viewer, and open it.
- Go to Windows Logs → Application.
- Find an error timestamped when Ubisoft Connect crashed.
- Record the faulting application, faulting module, exception code, and file path.
Also record your Windows version and build, Ubisoft Connect version if visible, game title, purchasing platform, Ubisoft account, GPU and driver version, recent updates, security software, and the crash-dump location. Send these details to Ubisoft Support rather than deleting the dumps.
Windows, Linux, and Steam Deck notes
These procedures target Windows 10 or Windows 11 PCs; menu labels can differ slightly between releases, and no particular fix is guaranteed to be OS-specific. If you use Linux or Steam Deck, Windows paths and AppData instructions do not apply. Uplay failures have been documented in Proton environments, which require a separate Wine/Proton-prefix investigation: Proton issue 2143.
When to contact Ubisoft Support
Escalate after a cache reset, clean-launch test, and current-client reinstall if the launcher still crashes; if several games are affected; if account ownership or linking is involved; or if Event Viewer repeatedly identifies the same faulting module. Include the exact error, timestamps, logs, crash-dump path, and steps already attempted.
