How to Fix “Unexp Net Err” on Windows (0x3B and 0x8007003A)

“Unexp Net Err” means that Windows or an application encountered an unexpected network error, but the abbreviation is used for two different hexadecimal codes. The standard ERROR_UNEXP_NET_ERR is error 59, 0x3B. A separate Windows Update message uses 0x8007003A with the same short label. Capture the complete code before choosing a fix.

For the Windows Update variant, run the built-in troubleshooter, reset the Windows Update services and cache, check disk space and policy or security interference, then repair Windows components with SFC and DISM. For a shared network path or another application, first verify access to the specific server or service and preserve the exact error details for escalation.

What “Unexp Net Err” means

The full Windows identifier ERROR_UNEXP_NET_ERR expands to “An unexpected network error occurred.” Standard error-code references identify it as error 59 in decimal, or 0x3B in hexadecimal. The wording describes an unexpected failure while Windows is communicating over a network; it does not identify the failed server, adapter, update component, or application by itself.

The abbreviation is ambiguous because Windows Update guidance sometimes labels 0x8007003A as “Update Failed — Unexp Net Err.” That is not the same hexadecimal value as 0x3B. The two codes can lead to different troubleshooting paths, so do not assume that every “Unexp Net Err” message is a Windows Update cache problem.

ERROR_UNEXP_NET_ERR or 0x3B Error 59: an unexpected network error occurred. Identify the operation, then verify access to the internet, server, or share involved.
0x8007003A with an “Unexp Net Err” Windows Update label A Windows Update failure using the same abbreviated wording. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter, then reset update services and the cache.

If the screen shows only the abbreviation, open the relevant update history, application dialog, or event entry and record the complete hexadecimal value. The code, the operation that failed, and the time of failure are more useful than the shortened title alone.

Record the complete error before changing anything

Write down the exact text and code first. Include whether the failure happened while installing an update, opening a shared network location, copying a file, or using a particular application. Also note whether other internet sites or network resources work normally. This record prevents you from applying a Windows Update cache reset to an unrelated network-path error.

  • Copy the hexadecimal code exactly, including all leading characters such as 0x.
  • Note the operation that failed and the application or Windows component displaying it.
  • Record whether the target was the public internet, a company server, a mapped share, or a local Windows Update service.
  • Preserve the corresponding Windows Update history entry or Event Viewer details before clearing caches or restarting services.

Take a screenshot if the message may disappear after a restart. If the error returns, compare the new code with the original rather than relying on the same abbreviated wording.

Use the failure location to choose the repair

The location of the failure determines which steps are relevant. Use this quick distinction before running commands.

Failure location Typical evidence Relevant repair branch
Windows Update Update history shows a failed installation and may display 0x8007003A. Run the troubleshooter, reset wuauserv and bits, rename SoftwareDistribution, check blockers, then run SFC and DISM if needed.
Shared network path or server The error appears while opening or using one server, share, or network resource. Confirm the computer can reach that specific target, retry once, and document the target and operation.
Another application One program reports the message while other network activity may continue. Record the application, target, and exact code; verify the service it needs before changing Windows Update components.

Start with basic connectivity checks

Before resetting anything, confirm that the computer can reach the destination involved in the failure. For an update, check that the machine has a working internet connection. For a shared path, check the specific server or share rather than relying only on a browser test to an unrelated site.

  1. Reconnect the network if the device has just changed Wi-Fi, Ethernet, VPN, or docking connections.
  2. Open the same server, share, or service that failed. If it is an update, return to Windows Update and retry once after confirming connectivity.
  3. Observe whether the failure is limited to one destination or affects every network operation.
  4. Record the result. A successful retry points to a transient interruption; a repeat failure provides evidence for the branch below.

Do not rename update folders or run component-repair commands merely because a network icon looks normal. The exact operation and code still determine whether the issue is in Windows Update, a remote resource, or an application.

1. Run the built-in Windows Update troubleshooter

Start with Windows’ own Windows Update troubleshooter. It checks common update-service and configuration conditions and may apply a correction automatically. Let it finish, read the result, and retry the failed update. If it reports that no change was made or the same code returns, continue to the cache reset rather than repeatedly launching the troubleshooter.

2. Reset the update services and cache

Open Command Prompt as administrator. An elevated window is required because the commands stop services and rename a protected Windows directory. Enter each line separately:

net stop wuauserv
net stop bits
ren C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
net start wuauserv
net start bits

wuauserv is the Windows Update service and bits is the Background Intelligent Transfer Service used for update transfers. The ren command changes the existing SoftwareDistribution cache directory to SoftwareDistribution.old; Windows can create a fresh cache when update activity resumes. This does not remove the old directory immediately, so do not delete it while troubleshooting unless you have a separate reason and a backup of anything you need.

Read the command output. If a service refuses to stop, reports that it is not running, or the rename says the path is in use, note the message instead of treating the sequence as successful. Restart Windows if a service remains locked, then repeat the sequence in an elevated Command Prompt. When both services start normally, open Windows Update and retry the same update.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Check space, security software, and policy restrictions

Update staging and installation need sufficient free disk space. Check the system drive before retrying; a nearly full drive can prevent downloaded packages or temporary files from being created. The available-space requirement varies with the update, so use the amount shown by Windows rather than relying on a universal threshold.

Third-party antivirus can interfere with update activity, and Group Policy can restrict update services or their download behavior. Investigate these possibilities without making a permanent security change:

  • Review the antivirus product’s blocked or quarantined events for the time of the failed update.
  • If your organization manages the computer, ask the administrator whether a Group Policy setting controls Windows Update.
  • Only test a temporary security-software change when you understand the risk and have permission; restore protection immediately after the test.
  • Do not infer that the computer is infected from this message. The error only reports an unexpected network failure.

Retry the update after correcting a confirmed space, antivirus, or policy issue. If there is no evidence of a blocker, continue to component repair.

4. Repair Windows component files with SFC and DISM

When the update still fails after the service and cache reset, use the built-in integrity tools. In an elevated Command Prompt, run:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
sfc /scannow
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Allow each command to reach completion. SFC checks protected Windows system files and attempts repairs. DISM services the running Windows image and repairs the component store that Windows uses for updates and system-file recovery. These commands can take time and may appear to pause; interrupting them can leave the repair incomplete.

Restart Windows after both commands finish, then retry the update. Preserve the final message from each command. If SFC reports that it found and repaired files, or if DISM reports a repair, include that result in your notes. If either command reports that it could not complete, record the exact wording instead of repeating the same command indefinitely.

5. Recheck update history and the exact code

After the restart, open Windows Update history and verify whether the same update now installs. If it fails again, compare the new hexadecimal value with the original. A changed code can indicate that the cache reset exposed a different stage of the process; it should be diagnosed on its own terms.

When the error concerns a server or shared network path

If the code is 0x3B or the message appears while using a shared resource, do not begin with the Windows Update commands. Confirm that the computer can reach the specific server or share involved and retry the same operation once. Record whether the resource is unavailable to everyone or only to this computer, and whether other network destinations continue to work.

Capture the exact path or service name, the application performing the operation, and the complete error text. If the server or share is reachable but one operation repeatedly produces ERROR_UNEXP_NET_ERR, the application or the remote service may need its own administrator to inspect logs. Your local Windows Update cache is unrelated unless the failing operation is explicitly an update.

How to choose between the remedies

Condition Use first Why
The exact code is unknown Stop and record the full message from Settings, update history, the application, or Event Viewer. The abbreviation maps to more than one hexadecimal value.
Windows Update shows 0x8007003A Built-in troubleshooter, then the service and cache reset. This presentation is specifically associated with update services and the SoftwareDistribution cache.
The update still fails after the cache reset Check disk space, antivirus or policy interference, then run SFC and DISM. These checks address staging blockers and possible component corruption.
A shared path or application shows 0x3B Verify the specific destination and preserve application and server details. The standard code means an unexpected network error, not necessarily an update failure.
The same failure returns after all documented steps Escalate with the code, operation, history, event details, and command results. The abbreviated message alone does not identify the failing subsystem.

What to preserve before escalation

Escalation is more effective when the receiving administrator can reproduce the context. Keep a compact timeline containing:

  • The exact hexadecimal code and complete message.
  • The date and time of each failure.
  • The update name and update-history result, if Windows Update is involved.
  • The server, share, or application involved in a 0x3B failure.
  • Whether basic connectivity worked and whether a retry succeeded temporarily.
  • The output from the Windows Update troubleshooter.
  • The results of the net stop, ren, and net start commands.
  • The final SFC and DISM messages, plus the restart and retry outcome.
  • Any confirmed disk-space, antivirus, or Group Policy finding.

Do not report only “Unexp Net Err.” Include the code and the failed operation so support can distinguish error 59 (0x3B) from the separate Windows Update label for 0x8007003A.
