If Uncle Lee’s Cookbook: Five Recipes for Disaster crashes, freezes, or refuses to start on Nintendo Switch, follow Nintendo’s downloaded-software sequence: restart the console, install system and game updates, check the title for corrupt data, then delete and redownload it if necessary. If the game is on a microSD card, test a fresh download in system memory. These are Nintendo’s platform-level remedies; no title-specific crash notice, workaround, or patch is established in the official material currently available.
Nintendo lists the game as a digital Switch release with a 174 MB download, published by DIONOUS GAMES and developed by Relatively Painless Games. The US store page dates its release to October 8, 2026 and labels it “Supported – Game behavior is consistent with Nintendo Switch” for Switch 2. That label describes compatibility, not a diagnosis for an individual launch failure.

First, identify what is actually failing
Use the exact symptom to choose the least destructive next step. A title that never opens, one that reaches a menu and then closes, and one that fails only after a save loads can point to different causes even though the visible result is “the game crashed.”

- It never starts: Highlight the icon and note whether the HOME Menu shows an error immediately, whether a black screen appears, or whether the software returns to HOME.
- It starts and then closes: Record the point of failure, such as the title screen, a menu, or a particular activity. Do not assume that a repeatable in-game crash proves the save is damaged.
- The console itself stops responding: Treat this as a system-recovery situation and use the forced-shutdown procedure below rather than repeatedly pressing buttons.
- Nintendo displays a code or sentence: Copy it exactly. Nintendo’s general downloaded-software guidance notes that a specific error can have its own support article.
The official US listing identifies this edition as digital, not a game-card release. It supports single-player play in TV, tabletop, and handheld modes, with English and Italian subtitles, an English voice track, and German among the listed languages. Those details help verify that you installed the intended title; they do not identify a crash cause. See the Nintendo game listing for the edition details.

Because this is a digital title, there is no cartridge to reseat or clean. If another Switch user reports a game-card fix, that advice does not directly apply to this edition. Concentrate on the installed software, the console update state, and the storage location shown in Data Management.
Use this order before deleting anything
The sequence below moves from reversible checks to a redownload. Complete one step, then try the game again so you know which change affected the result.
- Restart the Switch normally.
- Install any available system update.
- Install the game’s software update.
- Run Nintendo’s corrupt-data check.
- Delete and redownload the digital software if it still fails.
- If the download is on microSD, test it in system memory.
- Contact Nintendo Support with the error wording and storage details if none of those steps works.
This is a troubleshooting procedure, not a guarantee that every failure is repairable locally. Nintendo’s public pages do not document a confirmed Uncle Lee’s Cookbook-specific defect, and the absence of a notice is not proof that no player has encountered one.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Keep the order intact when possible. Updating before checking files matters because Nintendo’s corrupt-data instructions assume the console is current. Testing system memory is also more informative after an ordinary redownload, since otherwise two variables—storage location and an incomplete download—are changed at once.
1. Restart the console cleanly
A normal restart clears a temporary software state without removing installed games or save data.
- Hold the Switch POWER button for at least three seconds.
- Select Power Options.
- Select Restart.
- After HOME returns, launch Uncle Lee’s Cookbook once.
If the system is completely unresponsive, Nintendo’s general software instructions describe holding POWER for 20 seconds to force it off. Wait briefly, press POWER again, and allow the console to boot. Use the forced shutdown only when the normal menu cannot be reached; it is not a substitute for the ordinary restart path.
If the game now opens, the failure was consistent with a temporary system state. If it still fails, continue rather than repeating restarts indefinitely. Note whether the first launch after reboot fails at the same point, because that detail helps support distinguish a startup failure from an intermittent freeze.

2. Update Switch system software
Run the console update before checking the game’s files. Nintendo requires an internet connection to download a system update.
- From HOME, open System Settings.
- Scroll to System.
- Select System Update.
- Let the update complete, then restart if the console requests it.
Afterward, test the game once. If the system reports that it is current, move to the title update rather than assuming the game itself is current. A current console can still have an older game build installed, and a game update can be offered even when no system update is available.
3. Update the game itself
Downloaded software can have a newer build than the one already installed. You can check without opening the crashing program.
- On HOME, highlight the Uncle Lee’s Cookbook icon.
- Press the + or − button on the controller.
- Select Software Update.
- Select Via the Internet.
- Wait for the download and installation to finish, then launch the game.
If no update is offered, that only means Nintendo’s service did not present one to the console at that moment. It does not establish that a game-specific crash has been fixed or that a future patch cannot change behavior. If an update downloads, allow it to finish completely before testing; interrupting the process can leave the installed copy in the same state you were trying to correct.
4. Check the installation for corrupt data
Nintendo provides a file-integrity check for downloadable software. Update the system first, then use this path:
- Open System Settings from HOME.
- Select Data Management.
- Select Manage Software.
- Choose Uncle Lee’s Cookbook: Five Recipes for Disaster.
- Select Check for Corrupt Data.
The check can identify a damaged download and tell the console what to do next. Follow the on-screen instruction, then try the game again. Nintendo’s detailed menu reference is available in its corrupt-data instructions.
A clean result does not prove that the game has no bug; it means this particular check did not find damaged installed data. Continue to the redownload step if the same failure remains. If the check reports a problem, let the console complete the corrective download before launching, even if the icon appears usable during the process.

- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
5. Delete and redownload the digital game
Nintendo’s launch-error guidance recommends redownloading when the earlier checks do not resolve the problem. Because this is a digital title, the download shown on Nintendo’s US listing is 174 MB.

- Press + or −.
- Open the software-management option that removes the installed software, and confirm the deletion when prompted.
- Return to HOME and redownload the title from the Nintendo eShop account that owns it.
- Wait for the download and installation to complete before launching.
Do not describe a redownload as a guaranteed repair for game-specific save data. The official materials reviewed do not establish what happens to this title’s saves in every deletion scenario. If the console presents a separate save-data choice, read it carefully and avoid selecting an option that removes saved data unless you deliberately intend to do so.
Deleting the software is different from deleting save data, but menu wording can vary by action and console version. Confirm that you are removing only the installed program. The 174 MB size is modest, yet the console still needs a stable connection and enough free space to complete the download and installation.
Nintendo’s “Unable to start software on Nintendo Switch” guidance covers the launch-error branch and the storage test that follows.
6. Test system memory when microSD storage may be involved
Use this branch only when the game is installed on a microSD card or the card is a plausible source of the failure. The 174 MB game does not require extra storage on the basis of the listing alone, so do not buy a card preemptively.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Power the console down normally.
- Remove the microSD card according to Nintendo’s hardware instructions for your model.
- Start the console and download Uncle Lee’s Cookbook directly to system memory.
- Launch the system-memory copy and test the same action that previously failed.
Nintendo’s launch-error article also lists replacing the microSD card as an option if the problem persists. A successful system-memory test makes the card or its data path worth investigating; it does not prove that every failure on that card is caused by the game. If the title fails identically from system memory, the card is less likely to be the immediate trigger, although the test cannot diagnose a software defect.
Do not present this as the first troubleshooting step. It is a conditional comparison after restart, updates, the corrupt-data check, and an ordinary redownload have not solved the problem. Compare like with like: test the same mode and the same point in the game after moving storage. A launch that succeeds in system memory but fails from microSD is useful evidence to report, not proof that replacing the card is mandatory.

Choose the right branch for the message on screen
“Unable to start software. Return to the HOME Menu and try again”
This wording is an example of a Nintendo launch message. Return to HOME, complete the restart, update, corrupt-data, and redownload sequence above, and preserve the exact wording for support. Do not infer from this sentence alone that the installation is corrupt; Nintendo provides several possible remedies for the same launch symptom.
“There was a problem, and the software needed to close” on Switch 2
Nintendo’s Switch 2 procedure calls for a restart, current system and game software, a corrupt-data check, and—if needed—a redownload to system memory. The official store page labels this game “Supported – Game behavior is consistent with Nintendo Switch,” but that compatibility statement is not a title-specific crash report. Apply the general procedure and document whether the failure occurs only on Switch 2, only in one play mode, or on both Switch generations.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
No message, just a freeze or return to HOME
Record exactly what you see and at what point it happens. A blank screen, an immediate return to HOME, and a close after loading are different observations even when no code appears. Run the ordered checks once, then contact support if the behavior is unchanged rather than repeatedly deleting and reinstalling without new information.
The console is frozen, not only the game
Use the 20-second POWER hold only when the console will not respond. Once it boots, perform the normal restart-and-update sequence. If the entire system repeatedly locks up outside this title, tell Nintendo Support that other software or the HOME Menu is also affected; that changes the scope of the diagnosis.
The failure happens in only one play mode
The listing supports TV, tabletop, and handheld play. Test another mode only to document the pattern, not because Nintendo identifies a mode-specific defect. If handheld play works but TV mode closes, or vice versa, record the docked state, controllers in use, and exact step that triggers the failure. That comparison can make a support case clearer without implying a confirmed cause.

Recommended Free Tools
- The exact on-screen error code or sentence, including capitalization where practical.
- Whether the game fails before the title screen, during loading, or after you begin playing.
- Your Switch model (original Switch, Switch Lite, OLED model, or Switch 2).
- Whether the game was installed in system memory or on a microSD card.
- Whether the console and the game reported current software.
- Whether the corrupt-data check found a problem.
- Whether a fresh system-memory download changed the behavior.
- Whether the failure affects TV, tabletop, and handheld modes equally.
- Whether other downloaded games launch normally on the same console.
Use Nintendo’s support search for the exact message if one appears; the company maintains separate articles for some codes and phrases. The general downloaded-software page is available here. Support can then distinguish an account, storage, system, or software issue without asking you to repeat every basic step.

Limits of what these fixes prove
- They are platform remedies: Restarting, updating, checking data, and redownloading are Nintendo’s general procedures for downloaded Switch software, not a verified cure written specifically for this game.
- No confirmed title-specific patch is established here: The official store and support pages reviewed do not provide a crash bulletin, workaround, or patch note for Uncle Lee’s Cookbook.
- Compatibility is not immunity: “Supported – Game behavior is consistent with Nintendo Switch” means Nintendo lists Switch 2 compatibility. It does not guarantee that every installation or save will launch correctly.
- Storage is a test variable: System memory and microSD installation can be compared when the card may be involved, but the listing does not say that additional storage is required.
- Do not invent a success rate: Nintendo’s materials provide procedures, not a percentage showing how often any one step fixes this title.
Because software updates and support instructions can change, check Nintendo’s current pages and any announcement from the game’s publisher or developer when a title-specific claim matters. Until an official notice says otherwise, the safest conclusion is that a Switch launch failure should be handled as a standard downloaded-software problem and escalated with precise symptoms if the standard sequence fails.
Quick decision table
| What you observe | Action | Why this branch fits |
|---|---|---|
| The game will not open and the console responds normally | Restart, update the system, update the game, then check for corrupt data | These are Nintendo’s baseline downloaded-software checks |
| The same launch error remains after the checks | Delete and redownload the digital title | Nintendo lists redownloading for persistent launch errors |
| The title is installed on microSD and still fails | Remove the card and download to system memory | Nintendo identifies system memory as a conditional storage test |
| Switch 2 reports that the software needed to close | Use the Switch 2 restart, update, corrupt-data, and system-memory procedure | Nintendo provides a general crash procedure for that message |
| A specific code or sentence appears | Search Nintendo Support for the exact wording and keep it for escalation | Some errors have dedicated instructions |
| The whole console freezes | Hold POWER for 20 seconds only when normal controls do not respond, then boot and continue the standard checks | Nintendo distinguishes forced shutdown from an ordinary restart |
When to stop troubleshooting locally
Stop after the ordered checks have been completed, especially if a clean system-memory download behaves exactly like the original installation. Repeating the same deletion or forced shutdown without recording a new symptom is unlikely to add useful evidence. Contact Nintendo Support, provide the details listed above, and quote the exact error. If Nintendo later publishes a notice or patch for this title, follow that title-specific instruction instead of treating this general sequence as a permanent diagnosis.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Uncle Lee’s Cookbook: Five Recipes for Disaster broken on Switch?
Nintendo’s official pages reviewed here do not establish a title-specific crash defect, workaround, or patch. Treat a failure as a general downloaded-software problem first, then check Nintendo Support for any later title notice.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWill deleting and redownloading erase my save?
The reviewed Nintendo material does not establish this game’s save behavior in every deletion scenario. Remove the installed software only, read each prompt carefully, and do not choose a separate save-data deletion option unless you intend to.
Should I buy a larger microSD card?
No. Nintendo lists the game as a 174 MB digital download, and extra storage is not shown as required. If the game is already on microSD and still fails, test a download in system memory first; Nintendo lists replacing the card as a later option.
Does Switch 2 compatibility guarantee that the game will launch?
No. Nintendo’s listing says “Supported – Game behavior is consistent with Nintendo Switch,” which is a compatibility statement, not a guarantee against an individual crash or installation problem.
What should I tell Nintendo Support?
Provide the exact error wording, when the failure occurs, your Switch model, whether storage is microSD or system memory, update and corrupt-data results, and whether a fresh system-memory download changed the behavior.
The Bottom Line
Restart, update the console and game, check for corrupt data, then redownload. If microSD storage is involved, test system memory before replacing hardware. If the same failure remains, preserve the exact message and contact Nintendo Support; no game-specific fix is confirmed in the official pages cited here.
