The message usually indicates that your mail app could not authenticate AOL or validate its server settings; it does not, by itself, prove that your AOL password is wrong. First sign in at AOL Mail in a private browser window. If webmail also rejects you, fix the AOL account login or security challenge before changing Apple Mail, Outlook, or another client.
If webmail works, use AOL’s provider sign-in when available, create an AOL app password when the client or account requires one, and then verify the IMAP and SMTP settings below.

Quick diagnostic checklist
- Test webmail: Open a private/incognito window, visit mail.aol.com, enter your full address and normal AOL password, and complete any verification prompt. Do not repeatedly guess a password.
- Check the username: Use the complete address, such as
[email protected], in every username field. Remove spaces and confirm the domain. - Choose AOL as the provider: If your app offers an AOL account type or logo, use it instead of “Other” or generic manual setup.
- Use an app password when needed: This is common with two-step verification, older clients, or apps without AOL’s current secure sign-in support.
- Update or recreate the account: Replace stale saved credentials, update the app, and remove/re-add the account if authentication remains stuck.
- Verify server settings: Use the standard AOL.com IMAP and SMTP values shown later.
AOL’s account help covers sign-in, locks, and recovery at https://help.aol.com/. The wording of the error is produced by the mail client, so the underlying cause differs by device and app.

Preferred AOL sign-in
- Confirm messages are present in AOL webmail and save any unsent drafts.
- Open System Settings > Internet Accounts. Older macOS versions use System Preferences > Internet Accounts.
- Select the failed AOL account and remove it.
- Choose Add Account, select AOL, and complete the AOL-hosted browser sign-in and verification.
- Enable Mail and any other services you want, then test receiving and sending.

Manual IMAP fallback
If Apple Mail displays “Unable to verify account name or password” and offers Next or manual details, continue and enter:
- Account type: IMAP
- Email address and username: your complete AOL address
- Password: your regular AOL password, or an app password if required
- Incoming server:
imap.aol.com, port993, SSL/TLS enabled - Outgoing server:
smtp.aol.com, port465, SSL/TLS enabled - SMTP authentication: required, using the full AOL address and current password or app password
Microsoft documents continuing past the verification error to enter Mac Mail’s incoming and outgoing servers: Mac Mail setup instructions.
Fix AOL Mail on iPhone or iPad
- Open Settings, then the account area. Depending on iOS version, this is Mail > Accounts or Apps > Mail > Mail Accounts.
- Tap the failed AOL account and remove it after confirming server mail is available and local drafts are saved.
- Tap Add Account, choose AOL, and finish the AOL sign-in flow.
- Turn on the Mail switch for the account and send a test message.
If the AOL option is unavailable or the sign-in is rejected, generate an app password and use it during setup. AOL’s mobile guidance is at https://help.aol.com/articles/aol-mail-mobile-mail.
App passwords: when and how to use one
An AOL app password is a generated code for a particular app or device; it is not a replacement for your normal AOL account password. AOL may require one when two-step verification is enabled, the mail client is old, AOL blocks its authentication protocol, or the client lacks supported secure sign-in.
- Sign in to AOL in a browser.
- Open Account Security.
- Find the option to generate an app password and follow the labels shown for your account.
- Copy the generated code exactly into the mail client’s password field.
- Continue using the normal AOL password for browser sign-in.
Labels and app choices can vary. If access was removed, AOL may require a new code; it does not publish a universal fixed expiration period. See AOL’s app-password and secure-access guidance and two-step verification information.

Outlook, Thunderbird, Gmail, and Samsung Mail
Outlook
Update the saved password in the account settings. Prefer AOL’s provider sign-in when offered. Outlook versions without that flow may need an AOL app password; if the profile continues prompting, remove and re-add it using the standard IMAP/SMTP settings.
Thunderbird
Use the full AOL address, select IMAP, and allow Thunderbird’s AOL sign-in if presented. Otherwise enter an app password when required, then confirm both incoming and outgoing authentication.
Gmail mobile app
AOL’s support documentation has historically described an app password for adding AOL accounts in Gmail’s mobile app. Treat that as client- and version-specific: follow the current AOL or Gmail sign-in screen rather than assuming every release behaves identically.
Samsung Mail and other clients
Choose AOL if it appears as a provider. For manual setup, use IMAP, SSL, full-address authentication, and an app password when AOL or two-step verification requires it. Update the app before recreating the account.
Standard AOL.com server settings
These values are for standard @aol.com addresses and are taken from AOL’s general third-party-app instructions:

| Function | Server | Port | Security | Authentication |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Incoming IMAP | imap.aol.com |
993 | SSL/TLS | Required |
| Outgoing SMTP | smtp.aol.com |
465 | SSL/TLS | Required |
Use the full AOL address as the username. AOL’s IMAP-download page also lists export.imap.aol.com for incoming mail. Because AOL publishes both names on different pages, use the hostname shown by your current AOL preset or relevant AOL instructions; if imap.aol.com fails, consult AOL’s IMAP-specific page rather than disabling security. General settings: AOL POP/IMAP/SMTP instructions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIMAP or POP?
IMAP synchronizes folders and message state across devices and is the usual choice. POP primarily downloads mail and can create different deletion and storage behavior. AOL lists POP incoming pop.aol.com on port 995 with SSL, and SMTP smtp.aol.com on port 465 with SSL and authentication. Back up mail before moving a POP account.
If receiving works but sending fails
- SMTP server is
smtp.aol.com. - Port is
465. - SSL/TLS is enabled.
- SMTP authentication is enabled.
- Outgoing username is the full AOL address.
- Outgoing password is current or the required app password.
- The account is not using an unrelated outgoing server.
AOL’s documented SMTP requirements are in its IMAP and app settings.
Password changes, saved credentials, and repeated prompts
After changing an AOL password, update it in Apple Mail or Internet Accounts, iCloud Keychain, Outlook, your phone’s account profile, and any password manager. If the account uses an app password, enter the new generated code rather than assuming the ordinary password will work. AOL’s password-change guidance is at https://help.aol.com/articles/why-cant-i-access-my-aol-mail-using-other-email-applications.
Repeated prompts usually mean a stale credential, wrong username, missing app password, or rejected authentication method. Replace the saved credential or recreate the account instead of submitting the same password indefinitely.

Before removing an account
- Confirm all server messages exist in AOL webmail.
- Send or save pending messages.
- Check whether the account is IMAP or POP.
- Export or copy local-only mail and POP downloads.
- Record custom folders that are stored only on the device.
Deleting an IMAP profile normally removes the device’s synchronized copy, not the server mailbox; local-only and POP mail are the important exceptions.
Address-specific and service edge cases
Verizon.net
Do not automatically apply AOL.com SMTP settings to a Verizon.net address. AOL publishes separate instructions, including smtp.verizon.net: Verizon.net settings.
Netscape addresses
Use the complete @netscape.com address and AOL’s separate configuration: Netscape mail instructions.
Network or service problems
If webmail works on one network but not another, test without a VPN, captive portal, or restrictive network. If every client fails while webmail works, account-security restrictions or an AOL authentication-service issue are more likely than a typo. Check AOL support for current notices; do not infer an outage from one error.
When nothing works
- Retest AOL webmail and complete every security prompt.
- Confirm the exact address domain and full username.
- Update the operating system and mail client.
- Try the AOL provider option on another supported device.
- Test another network.
- Use AOL webmail or the official AOL mobile app temporarily.
- Contact the mail-client vendor for menu or profile problems; contact AOL for account access and AOL-server authentication problems.
Do not disable SSL, lower security, or install unverified “fix” utilities. AOL’s supported settings require encrypted connections and authenticated SMTP.

Free alternatives when a client keeps failing
You do not need to buy software to solve this error. AOL webmail and the AOL mobile app use AOL’s supported access path. A newer third-party client may help when an old app cannot use secure sign-in or app passwords, but choose it for workflow needs rather than as a mandatory fix.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does AOL work in my browser but not Apple Mail?
Browser sign-in can use AOL’s modern authentication while the mail client may have a stale password, unsupported sign-in method, or missing app password.
Is an AOL app password the same as my AOL password?
No. It is a generated credential for a mail app or device; keep your normal password for AOL webmail.
Will deleting an account delete my AOL emails?
Server-synchronized IMAP mail normally remains in AOL, but back up local-only messages and POP downloads first.
Can I use AOL Mail without a third-party app?
Yes. Use AOL webmail or the official AOL mobile app.
