If Ubuntu installed successfully but wireless, display output, or startup is failing, identify the exact symptom and hardware before changing drivers or reinstalling anything. Check radio and network status first, record your Ubuntu release, kernel, GPU or Wi‑Fi adapter model, firmware mode, and Secure Boot state, then use the least destructive fix for that branch.
Start with a safe diagnosis
Post-install failures that look similar can have completely different causes. “Wi‑Fi is not working” might mean the radio is disabled, the adapter is not detected, NetworkManager cannot associate with the access point, or the computer is connected but the router or internet service is down. A black display can be a cable or monitor-input issue, a missing graphics module, a kernel regression, or a driver/Secure Boot conflict. A computer that skips Ubuntu may have a hidden boot menu, a firmware-mode mismatch, or a damaged GRUB installation.

Before installing a driver or running a bootloader command, write down:
- Ubuntu release and desktop edition (for example, the release shown in
Settings→About). - Kernel version from
uname -r. - Computer make and model.
- Wi‑Fi adapter make, model, revision, and chipset, if available.
- GPU model and whether the problem began after an update, kernel change, driver installation, or release upgrade.
- Whether the machine uses UEFI or legacy BIOS mode, and whether Secure Boot is enabled.
- Whether Windows or another operating system is installed, and whether the disk or partitions were recently changed.
- Whether you can use Ethernet or boot an Ubuntu live USB.
These details determine which packages and repair procedures are appropriate. A command that is safe on one release, disk layout, or firmware mode can be ineffective—or destructive—on another.

| What you see | First question | Low-risk next action | Risk to avoid |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wi‑Fi switch or networks are missing | Is the radio enabled and is an interface detected? | Check Wi‑Fi/airplane mode, then run nmcli device. |
Do not replace a driver before identifying the adapter. |
| Wi‑Fi says connected but websites fail | Does the computer have a local connection but no internet? | Test another device and the router; investigate DNS, router, or ISP issues. | Installing a driver will not repair an outage upstream. |
| Black screen, wrong resolution, flicker, or no external display | Which GPU is installed and what changed immediately before the fault? | For NVIDIA, inspect Ubuntu’s offered driver with ubuntu-drivers list or Additional Drivers. |
External installers can overwrite Ubuntu packages and affect Secure Boot. |
| Ubuntu does not appear or another OS starts | Is there a GRUB prompt, error, blank screen, or direct boot into another OS? | Use a live USB for diagnosis and consider Boot-Repair’s recommended flow. | Do not purge or reinstall GRUB without confirming disk, partitions, and firmware mode. |
Fix Ubuntu Wi‑Fi that is missing or cannot connect
1. Check the radio before touching drivers
- Open the system menu and make sure Wi‑Fi is switched on.
- Make sure Airplane Mode is off.
- Check the laptop’s physical wireless key or slider. Some models use a function-key combination or a hardware switch that software cannot override.
- Run
nmcli devicein Terminal. Read the row for the wireless interface and note whether it is connected, disconnected, unavailable, or absent.
If the interface is present and connected, the driver is at least exposing the adapter to NetworkManager. Test the connection with another device and check the router before changing packages. A “connected” state with no internet can be caused by the access point, DNS, a captive portal, the ISP, or a routing problem.
2. Determine whether Ubuntu sees the adapter
When no wireless interface appears, inspect the hardware list:
sudo lshw -C network
Record the wireless device description, vendor, product, revision, and any line mentioning a driver or firmware. Ubuntu’s hardware-dependent support means that two adapters sold under similar names can require different drivers. A device missing from the output may be disabled in firmware, disconnected, unsupported by the running kernel, blocked by a hardware switch, or affected by a driver or firmware problem; the output is needed to distinguish these cases.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAlso run:
rfkill list
Treat a reported hard block as a diagnostic clue rather than a universal diagnosis. It can indicate a physical switch or a BIOS/firmware setting. The Ubuntu Community Help Wiki is community-maintained and some details can be dated, so verify the exact remedy against your release and computer documentation.

3. Restore Wi‑Fi after suspend
If wireless disappears only after closing the lid or waking from suspend, try the reversible actions Ubuntu documents:
- Toggle Wi‑Fi off and on.
- Toggle Airplane Mode off and on.
- Restart the computer.
- Connect through Ethernet temporarily and install available system updates.
Ubuntu identifies driver power-management support as one possible cause of wireless not returning from suspend. If the problem repeats, record the adapter and kernel versions before seeking a release-specific driver or kernel fix; do not assume that a power-saving setting for one chipset applies to another.
4. Update without a wireless connection
Ethernet is the simplest temporary path if the computer has a port or a compatible adapter. You can also use another computer to download documentation or firmware instructions, but install only packages that match the Ubuntu release and adapter chipset. A live Ubuntu USB can provide a temporary desktop and network test; remember that the live preview does not include proprietary NVIDIA drivers, so its graphics behavior is not proof that an installed NVIDIA system is configured correctly.

Fix Ubuntu graphics and display problems
Identify the GPU and the change that preceded the failure
Write down the GPU model and whether the failure began after an Ubuntu update, kernel update, graphics-driver installation, or release upgrade. Note whether the machine reaches the login screen, shows a cursor on a black background, displays at the wrong resolution, flickers, or fails only on an external monitor. Also check the monitor cable and input selection; software troubleshooting cannot correct a disconnected or incorrectly selected display.

The available official procedure is specific to NVIDIA. It should not be generalized to AMD or Intel hardware, and historical instructions for the old AMD fglrx driver are not current generic removal steps.
Use Ubuntu’s supported NVIDIA route
On Ubuntu Desktop, inspect the detected choices with:
ubuntu-drivers list
You can alternatively open Software & Updates → Additional Drivers. Select the option Ubuntu marks as the recommended proprietary, tested driver for ordinary desktop use, apply the change, install all offered system updates, and reboot. Available branches can change with the Ubuntu release and GPU; production, new-feature, and long-term-support branches are not interchangeable guarantees. Follow the recommendation shown for your release rather than copying a static version number from an older guide.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Ubuntu’s Desktop documentation states: “We recommend installing the drivers provided by Ubuntu packages rather than downloading drivers from NVIDIA.” Its warning is explicit: “NVIDIA drivers installed from sources outside of those listed in this guide might potentially overwrite those provided by Ubuntu and might break Secure Boot.” Ubuntu’s tools default to pre-built signed drivers intended to work with Secure Boot, which is why mixing an external installer with Ubuntu packages can create a difficult recovery state.

When the display still fails
- Return to the recorded GPU, Ubuntu release, kernel, Secure Boot state, and installed driver version. Those facts are required for a safe next step.
- If the issue started immediately after a kernel or driver update, use the firmware’s boot menu or GRUB’s available older kernel entry, if present, only as a diagnostic comparison; keep the working entry and do not remove packages while investigating.
- If you installed a driver outside Ubuntu’s documented package routes, do not blindly run an old uninstall command. The correct rollback depends on how it was installed and on the release.
- Use a live USB to determine whether the monitor and basic GPU output work independently of the installed system. Proprietary NVIDIA modules are absent from the live preview, so compare only basic display behavior.
No single current rollback procedure covers every GPU vendor and Ubuntu release. For AMD or Intel, obtain release- and hardware-specific instructions from current Ubuntu documentation or appropriate support after collecting the facts above.

Classify the startup failure
Observe exactly what appears when the computer starts:
- GRUB menu appears: Ubuntu’s bootloader is launching; the failure may be a kernel, initramfs, filesystem, or graphics issue.
- A GRUB prompt or error appears: record the complete text and avoid guessing partition numbers.
- Blank screen or firmware logo only: check display input and firmware boot-order settings, then determine whether the disk is detected.
- Another operating system starts directly: the firmware may be selecting its boot entry first, or GRUB may be missing from the expected EFI location.
Ask what changed immediately before the failure: a Windows/Linux installation, disk replacement, partition operation, firmware-mode change, kernel or driver update, or a failed GRUB upgrade. These events correspond to different repair paths.

Create or use Ubuntu installation media and boot it from the firmware’s one-time boot menu. Choose the live-session option rather than installing again. A live session lets you inspect disks, copy important files, check whether the internal drive is visible, and access repair tools without relying on the damaged installation. Ubuntu also describes the live preview as a way to test hardware without changing the installed system.

- Stay Safe Online: The wifi dongle supports WPA-PSK, WPA2-PSK, WPA/WPA2 mixed encryption modes. Note: Make sure that the distance between the adapter and router should be within 30ft
Back up important files before altering partitions or boot files. If disk encryption, software RAID, unusual storage controllers, or a mixed UEFI/legacy setup is involved, stop and identify the configuration first; generic repair instructions may not apply.
Consider Boot-Repair, with limits
Ubuntu Boot-Repair documentation describes running Boot-Repair from a live session or from a working installation and using its recommended repair flow for common cases. The utility can collect diagnostic information. Read any prompt about sharing a report and decide whether the information and privacy implications are acceptable before submitting logs.
Boot-Repair guidance in the Ubuntu Community Help Wiki is useful for concepts but is not a current guarantee for every Ubuntu release, UEFI configuration, encrypted disk, RAID arrangement, or dual-boot layout. Review the proposed changes, keep a backup, and use device-specific instructions when the recommended repair cannot identify your layout confidently.
Why manual GRUB commands need preparation
GRUB installation commands depend on facts that cannot be safely guessed: the target disk, EFI System Partition, root and boot partitions, UEFI versus BIOS mode, mounted filesystems, and (when applicable) a chroot environment. A command aimed at the wrong disk can leave both operating systems unbootable.
The Ubuntu GRUB installation guidance warns that purging and reinstalling GRUB removes GRUB packages and settings and temporarily leaves the computer without a bootloader. Treat that operation as a last-resort, documented procedure for your exact layout—not as a copy-and-paste first fix. If you cannot identify the disk and firmware mode from the live session, gather diagnostic output or obtain experienced support before proceeding.
What to use when the computer has several problems
| Situation | Best first resource | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Wi‑Fi absent but Ubuntu starts | Installed system plus nmcli device, lshw -C network, and rfkill list |
Preserves the installed environment while identifying radio state and hardware. |
| NVIDIA display issue and internet available | Ubuntu updates, ubuntu-drivers list, or Additional Drivers |
Uses Ubuntu-provided, signed packages matched to the release. |
| No network and you need updates | Ethernet, if available | Provides a temporary supported path without changing wireless drivers blindly. |
| Ubuntu does not boot | Live Ubuntu USB | Provides a separate environment for backups, disk inspection, and boot-repair tools. |
| Manual GRUB reinstall under an unknown layout | Pause and identify UEFI/BIOS, disks, and partitions | The operation can remove settings and leave the system without a bootloader. |
Common mistakes that make recovery harder
- Installing a driver by brand name alone: the exact adapter or GPU, revision, kernel, and Ubuntu release determine compatibility.
- Confusing a network outage with a driver failure: a connected interface with no internet points first toward the router, DNS, captive portal, or ISP.
- Mixing NVIDIA installers: external packages can overwrite Ubuntu’s packages and break Secure Boot.
- Copying historical graphics commands: old fglrx-era AMD instructions are not universal current repair steps.
- Changing several variables at once: record the current state and make one reversible change before testing again.
- Running GRUB commands with guessed device names: confirm disk and partition identities from the live session first.
- Skipping backups: bootloader and partition work can make files inaccessible even when the data itself remains intact.
A practical recovery order
- Record the release, kernel, computer model, affected device, firmware mode, Secure Boot state, and the exact visible symptom.
- Apply only physical and software toggles first: Wi‑Fi switch, Airplane Mode, display input, cables, and a normal restart.
- For Wi‑Fi, run
nmcli device, then inspectlshw -C networkandrfkill listif the interface is absent. - For NVIDIA graphics, update Ubuntu and use
ubuntu-drivers listor Additional Drivers; reboot after the change. - If Ubuntu cannot start, boot a live USB, back up files, and inspect the disk and boot mode.
- Use Boot-Repair’s recommended flow only after reviewing its diagnostic report and sharing choices.
- Attempt manual GRUB work only when the exact disk, partitions, firmware mode, and recovery environment are known.
This order keeps low-risk identification separate from changes that can alter drivers, firmware boot entries, or the bootloader itself.
