What Toy Story 3 release is running on your PS5?
The PlayStation Store lists Disney•Pixar Toy Story 3 as a PS4/PS5 release dated March 14, 2025. It was converted from the PSP version and adds up-rendering, rewind, quick save and custom video filters. The listing also warns that conversion differences can make the game play differently from the original or cause some features not to function properly. A PS5 with outdated system software can also have compatibility problems.

That history matters when you diagnose a problem. You are not running the original PlayStation 3 or PSP software unchanged, and an option that behaved differently on older hardware may not be implemented identically here.

Make a safe diagnostic plan before changing anything
Save recovery is the only part of this troubleshooting process where an otherwise simple action can permanently remove progress. Start by recording what you have, then work outward from the game to the console.
- Identify the edition: Highlight the game on the PS5 home screen and read its title and installed version. Do not assume the Complete Edition and the converted release use identical content or save behavior.
- Check the installation location: Note whether the game is on internal PS5 storage or USB extended storage. Storage location is relevant to launch and performance errors.
- Update first: Install any available PS5 system software, controller device software and game update before using repair options.
- Preserve the current save: If the game still opens, leave the save in place until you have uploaded or copied a known-good version. A backup made after corruption is not a reliable recovery point.
- Change one thing at a time: Restart and test before moving to a reinstall or Safe Mode operation. This keeps the cause identifiable and avoids unnecessary data loss.
Fixing a Toy Story 3 save that will not load or save
On PS5, treat this release as a PS4 game for saved-data management. Its saves are handled under the PS4 section of Settings, even though the game appears in your PS5 library.
1. Open the correct saved-data menu
- Open Settings on the PS5.
- Choose Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
- Select Saved Data (PS4).
Looking only under PS5 saved data can make a perfectly valid Toy Story 3 save appear to be missing.

If more than one game reports a synchronization error, try the sync again. If the error persists, turn Enable Auto-Sync off, turn it on again, and retry. A continuing multi-game sync failure is a PlayStation account or service problem rather than evidence that this particular Toy Story 3 file is corrupt; use PlayStation Support instead of repeatedly overwriting local data.

- DualSense Controller PS5 and PC compatible. Not compatible with PS4.
- PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
When PlayStation Plus cloud storage is available, upload the current console copy before experimenting. Then inspect the date of each cloud copy. PS4 data uploaded to cloud storage must be manually downloaded to PS5 console storage; it does not automatically replace the local file simply because you selected the game.
3. Choose the copy with the progress you actually want
| Situation | Safest action | Why |
|---|---|---|
| The game opens and current progress is visible | Upload that console save to cloud storage before any repair | It gives you a verified fallback if a later step changes local data |
| The console save is older than the cloud copy | Check the cloud timestamp, then manually download the intended cloud copy to console storage | PS4 saves on PS5 require a deliberate download |
| You are unsure which copy is good | Do not delete either copy; record both dates and test the game without overwriting them | Deleting the wrong copy removes your best recovery option |
| No usable console or cloud copy exists | There is no guaranteed in-game recovery path; avoid destructive resets and contact PlayStation Support if the account or storage itself is failing | A reinstall cannot recreate a missing save |
4. Run the clean new-game test
PlayStation’s crash guidance recommends starting the game without an existing save. From the game’s opening, choose a new game and play long enough to reach the first save opportunity. If the new game works while your original file fails to load, the original save may be corrupted. This test separates a damaged save from a wider installation, controller or console problem.
Do not delete the old file merely because the test succeeds. Keep the original console copy and any cloud copy until you have confirmed that the new file saves, reloads and contains the progress you need.
5. Reinstall only after the backup check
If the game will not launch, reports a data error, or fails with both a new game and the protected save, delete and reinstall the game while preserving saved data. Reinstalling replaces game files; it is not a method for restoring a deleted save. Keep the console connected to power and allow the installation and update to finish before testing again.

When a Toy Story 3 save disappears after reinstalling
A reinstall should not be treated as a license to remove saved data. In the deletion menus, distinguish the game application from Saved Data (PS4). If the application was removed but the save remains, reinstall the game and test the local save. If the local save was removed but a PlayStation Plus copy exists, use the PS4 cloud-storage screen to download the dated copy manually.
If the cloud copy is older than the progress you remember, downloading it may roll the game back. Check the timestamp before confirming. If no copy contains the required progress, neither a controller reset, cache clear nor database rebuild can manufacture it.
Fixing a controller that does not work in Toy Story 3
Supported PS4 games on PS5 can use a DualSense, DUALSHOCK 4 or an officially licensed third-party gamepad. PlayStation also warns that not every third-party controller works. For diagnosis, use an official controller or one explicitly confirmed as compatible with supported PS4 games; otherwise a failure may be an input-compatibility issue rather than a Toy Story 3 bug.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use this controller sequence
- Restart the game. Close Toy Story 3, return to the home screen and launch it again. If the title has a controller-configuration menu, restore its defaults before testing.
- Update the PS5 and controller. Open Settings > Accessories > Controllers (General) and install any offered DualSense device-software update. Also install pending PS5 system software.
- Update the game. Highlight Toy Story 3 on the home screen, press Options, and choose Check for Update.
- Pair by USB. Connect the controller with a data-capable USB cable and press the PS button. A charging-only cable cannot complete data pairing, and a cable cannot repair a physically damaged controller.
- Reset the controller. Use the manufacturer’s reset procedure, reconnect it by USB, and press PS to pair again.
- Cross-test hardware. Try a known-good official DualSense. If that controller works, the original pad, its cable or its compatibility is the likely scope of the fault.
- Use Safe Mode only after these checks. If several games or system menus have input or performance problems, select Rebuild Database in Safe Mode after connecting a controller by USB.
Separate an input problem from a game problem
| Test result | Most useful interpretation |
|---|---|
| Buttons work in the PS5 home screen but not in Toy Story 3 | Check the game’s controller configuration, update status and PS4-game compatibility first |
| No input works in the home screen or several games | Focus on controller pairing, cable, device software and Safe Mode rather than the Toy Story 3 save |
| A second official DualSense works | The first controller or its connection is implicated |
| Only an unverified third-party pad fails | Compatibility is unconfirmed; retest with DualSense or DUALSHOCK 4 |

For a freeze during play or at launch
- Confirm the title has finished installing and that the latest game update is present.
- Restart the PS5 and launch Toy Story 3 again.
- Test a new game without loading the existing save. A working new game points toward save corruption; a freeze in both tests points toward installation, storage or system software.
- If the game is installed on USB extended storage, move it to internal PS5 storage and test again.
- Back up the saved data, then delete and redownload the game if launch or data errors continue.
Why internal storage is a useful test
Moving the installation from USB extended storage to internal PS5 storage changes the storage path without changing the game edition or controller. If the symptom disappears, investigate the extended drive, its connection and available space. If it remains, return to the update, save and system checks instead of repeatedly moving the same files.
When a performance drop is a system issue
Use Safe Mode’s Clear System Software Cache for system-feature issues or performance drops. This is a maintenance step, not a save-recovery method. If the console’s content database appears inconsistent, Safe Mode’s Rebuild Database scans the storage and recreates the database used to organize content. Neither option should replace the backup step when saved progress is at risk.
Do not jump straight to Reset PS5
Reset PS5 deletes all user data. It is an endpoint step for a system-wide failure, after backups and PlayStation Support guidance, not a normal response to one Toy Story 3 freeze. A reset can remove local saves, installed games and settings that you have not copied elsewhere.

A complete troubleshooting checklist
- Confirm whether you own the March 14, 2025 converted PS4/PS5 release or the separately listed Complete Edition.
- Install current PS5 system software, controller device software and the Toy Story 3 update.
- Open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Saved Data (PS4).
- Check sync status and the dates of local and cloud copies before downloading or deleting.
- Upload a known-good save to PlayStation Plus cloud storage when that subscription is available.
- Run a new-game test without overwriting the original save.
- Use an official DualSense or DUALSHOCK 4, pair it by data-capable USB, and test a second controller if necessary.
- Move the game from USB extended storage to internal storage when launch or stutter symptoms persist.
- Back up before reinstalling, clearing system cache, rebuilding the database or using any destructive option.
- Reserve Reset PS5 for a system-wide failure after support guidance.
What the evidence can—and cannot—establish
The PS5 release is a converted PSP product with added features, and its store warning allows for conversion-related differences or unavailable features. That explains why behavior may not match an older version, but it does not prove that every freeze or missing option is a conversion defect. PlayStation’s general backward-compatibility guidance says the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games are playable on PS5, while individual titles can still need updates or have limitations.
For Toy Story 3 specifically, a clean new-game test is the most useful boundary: if it works, concentrate on the old save and preserve it; if it fails too, concentrate on updates, controller compatibility, storage and system maintenance. Keep destructive actions last, because no repair menu can restore progress that was deleted without a verified copy.
