Update IDM, remove the browser’s broken or outdated IDM extension, reinstall the genuine module using IDM’s official instructions, and restart the browser. The message alone does not prove that IDM is malware or that the Windows application is damaged.
What the warning means
Internet Download Manager (IDM) on Windows and the IDM Integration Module in a browser are separate components. The desktop program handles downloads; the extension or add-on passes download links from Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Opera, or another supported browser to IDM.
When a browser says the extension may be corrupted, it is reporting a problem with the extension’s package or installed state. It may be outdated, disabled, incomplete, blocked by the browser, or inconsistent with that browser’s current profile. The warning by itself does not identify which cause applies, and it does not establish that IDM’s desktop program is damaged.
Consider repairing the desktop installation as well if IDM will not start, reports missing or damaged files, or cannot be updated or repaired. Otherwise, begin with the browser module. IDM’s repair instructions recommend repairing or updating IDM, removing browser extensions, and installing the genuine module again.

Repair IDM integration safely
- Close the browser completely. Close every Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Opera window before changing the extension. A browser still running in the background may keep its profile files in use.
- Update IDM. In IDM, choose Help → Check for updates…. IDM’s Chrome troubleshooting instructions recommend checking for updates first. If the built-in updater does not work, download IDM only from its official website and install the current installer over the existing copy. Follow any reboot prompt; IDM’s repair guidance describes this as a repair step.
- Check IDM’s integration settings. Open IDM → Options → General. Make sure integration with the affected browser is enabled. If you are troubleshooting an unlisted browser, check Use advanced browser integration as described below. IDM documents these options in its Options guide.
- Remove the broken or suspicious extension. Open the browser’s extension manager and uninstall the inactive, corrupted, or outdated IDM entry. Remove duplicate or suspicious IDM-named extensions rather than leaving several competing modules installed.
- Install the genuine module for your browser. Use IDM’s browser-specific procedure or a browser-store link provided by IDM—not a random download page. IDM’s repair page lists instructions for Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Opera.
- Restart the browser and test a normal file download. Leave IDM running while testing. The verification steps below help distinguish a repaired integration from a site-specific download problem.
Chrome and other Chromium browsers
In Chrome, open chrome://extensions, remove the old or disabled IDM entry, then follow IDM’s current instructions to install the replacement. IDM’s Chrome FAQ describes updating IDM, enabling Chrome integration, replacing an old module, and restarting Chrome. The commonly referenced IDM folder is C:Program Files (x86)Internet Download Manager, but some installations use C:Program FilesInternet Download Manager. Locate the actual IDM installation folder on your PC rather than assuming either path.
IDM’s own pages are not fully consistent about the Chrome route: its Chrome FAQ says the module may need to be installed manually from the IDM installation, while its repair page also provides a Chrome Web Store link. Follow the current route linked from IDM’s instructions for your installation. If Chrome says Google has flagged or blocked the extension, do not bypass that warning or install a replacement from an unofficial source; check IDM’s security and extension FAQ and verify that the extension source is legitimate.

For another Chromium browser, such as Brave or Vivaldi, use its own extension manager and the applicable IDM instructions. Support and installation behavior can vary by browser version and policy; IDM’s support site lists major supported browsers, but that does not guarantee every Chromium-based browser will accept the module.
Microsoft Edge
Open edge://extensions and remove the broken IDM entry. Install the module using the Edge route linked from IDM’s repair page. Then confirm that the extension is enabled and that Edge integration is selected in IDM → Options → General. Restart Edge before testing.

Firefox
Firefox manages add-ons differently from Chromium browsers. First update IDM and enable Firefox integration at IDM → Options → General. Remove the outdated IDM add-on if necessary, then restart Firefox so IDM can refresh or install the current module. Check about:addons afterward and enable the active IDM module.
IDM notes that older Firefox add-ons can remain alongside newer entries, especially where a computer has multiple Firefox installations or a portable browser. An obsolete disabled entry does not by itself show that the current integration is broken. Follow IDM’s Firefox integration guidance. Do not install a particular .xpi file simply because its name appears in an online fix: the correct package depends on the IDM release and Firefox compatibility.

Opera and browsers not listed by IDM
For Opera, remove the old module from opera://extensions and use the Opera procedure linked from IDM’s repair page.
For an unlisted browser, IDM documents an advanced-integration route: in IDM → Options → General, enable Use advanced browser integration, select the browser if it appears, or choose Add Browser… and locate its executable. Restart the browser afterward. See IDM’s advanced integration instructions. If advanced integration itself causes problems, turn it off and retest; IDM’s Options guide documents that setting.

If reinstalling the extension does not fix it
- Check administrator mode. IDM warns that integration may fail when the browser runs as administrator, including when another elevated program launches it. Close the browser, right-click its shortcut, choose Properties → Compatibility, and clear Run this program as an administrator if selected. Avoid launching the browser from an elevated file manager or launcher. See IDM’s integration troubleshooting page.
- Look for duplicates or fakes. Remove suspicious IDM-named extensions, then install only the module reached through IDM’s official process. IDM warns that fake extensions circulate through stores and third-party sites in its repair instructions.
- Check for conflicts. Privacy blockers, other download helpers, antivirus browser modules, VPN or proxy extensions, and managed-device security policies can interfere. Test with a clean browser profile or disable one suspected extension at a time. Do not permanently weaken antivirus or browser protections to make integration work.
- Turn off advanced integration as a rollback test. In IDM → Options → General, clear Use advanced browser integration, restart the browser, and test again.
- Test a clean browser profile. If the extension keeps returning in a damaged state, a new profile can show whether the problem belongs to the old profile or the IDM installation. Browser sync may restore an old extension, so temporarily pause sync if it reappears. Avoid manually deleting profile folders: doing so can remove cookies, settings, and saved sessions.
- Reinstall IDM only if the desktop program also appears damaged or repair fails. Before a major uninstall, back up important download queues. IDM’s repair page recommends installing the latest version over the current one as an initial repair step.
Test whether integration is working
- Open IDM and leave it running.
- Use a page with a normal downloadable file, then click its download link.
- Check whether IDM’s Download File Info dialog appears and whether the file enters the IDM queue.
- If the context-menu integration is enabled, right-click a download link and look for Download with IDM.
- Compare with a click while holding Alt, which IDM documents as a way to prevent IDM from taking over that particular click.
IDM describes these capture and context-menu behaviors in its download-starting guide. If an ordinary file is captured but a particular video is not, the extension may be working: streaming formats, authentication, expiring links, DRM, or site protections can prevent capture. IDM lists video-panel and 403 errors separately from basic integration issues in its browser integration support. Browser integration does not bypass DRM, and corporate or school policies may prevent extension installation altogether.
Avoid unsafe “fixes”
Do not install a replacement IDM extension from an unknown website, and do not use cracked IDM installers, patches, keygens, or activation fixes. They are not needed to repair a legitimate extension and can expose the computer to altered software or malware. Never disable antivirus protection to install one. Use IDM’s official site and instructions, and respect browser security blocks instead of bypassing them.
