A WordPress database disk-full error is normally a MySQL or hosting-storage problem, not a WordPress configuration problem. Preserve a backup, record the exact error, use WordPress diagnostics only to gather context, and ask your hosting provider to verify the database quota, server disk, temporary directory, and cache storage. Do not assume that changing wp-config.php or repairing tables will create the missing space.
What the “database disk full” error means
WordPress can show a general “Error establishing a database connection” message for several reasons, including incorrect credentials, an unavailable database server, and storage exhaustion. The specific MySQL disk-full condition can mean one of several limits has been reached:
- the database account or hosting plan quota is full;
- the database server’s filesystem has no available space;
- the database temporary directory, often exposed as
/tmp, has insufficient space or too many files; or - server cache storage is full.
WordPress describes this condition plainly: “This is a MySQL error and has nothing to do with WordPress directly; you should contact your host about it.” The host or server administrator has the access needed to identify which storage constraint is actually exhausted.
Follow this safe troubleshooting sequence
1. Record the complete symptom
Copy the full error text, including any MySQL wording or error number. Note when it began, whether it is continuous or intermittent, and whether both the public site and the WordPress dashboard fail. Do not treat every database-connection message as proof of a full disk; authentication, hostname, network, and database-service failures can produce similar front-end symptoms.

2. Preserve a way back
Before repairing tables, deleting records, changing configuration, or running other database actions, make an appropriate backup or work on a staging copy. A database export protects database content such as posts, pages, comments, users, and settings, but it does not include themes, plugins, media uploads, or wp-config.php. Arrange file backups as well when you need a restorable full-site backup.
3. Check the information available to you
If the dashboard still loads, open Tools → Site Health → Info. Review the reported web server, PHP, server architecture, and database details and provide relevant values to the host. Site Health cannot show every account-level quota or the storage state of the provider’s database server, so a normal-looking report does not rule out a host-side limit.
4. Use temporary logging only when application errors are relevant
If the site remains partly accessible and you need to distinguish an application failure from the storage symptom, WordPress can write diagnostic messages to wp-content/debug.log. In wp-config.php, the relevant constants are WP_DEBUG and WP_DEBUG_LOG; WP_DEBUG_DISPLAY can keep errors out of visitor-facing pages.

Make configuration edits cautiously, preferably after a backup or on staging. Do not display verbose errors on a public production site. Logs can contain paths, queries, credentials, or other sensitive details; restrict access to the log, move it outside the public web root where your environment permits, and disable or remove temporary debugging after diagnosis.

Send the provider the exact error, timestamp, affected domain, and any Site Health details. Ask them to check each of these separately:
- Whether the database account or plan quota has been reached.
- Whether the database server filesystem is full.
- Whether the database temporary directory (
tmpdir, commonly associated with/tmp) lacks free space or has reached a file-count limit. - Whether server cache storage is full.
MySQL documents both disk-full and quota-exceeded conditions, but the corrective action depends on which one the provider confirms. Possible host-side remedies include freeing server storage, removing accumulated temporary files, increasing or correcting a quota, or repairing a cache-storage condition. Do not label one of these as the cause until the provider or server administrator verifies it.

6. Verify the site after the host reports a fix
Load the front end and dashboard, then test database-backed actions such as logging in, publishing a test draft, saving settings, submitting a comment if appropriate, and uploading media. Review the relevant server and WordPress logs for a recurrence. If the error returns, give the host the new timestamp and complete message rather than repeatedly changing WordPress files.

What not to do
Do not expect wp-config.php edits to create space
wp-config.php contains connection settings and debugging controls. Correcting a genuinely wrong database host, name, user, or password is a separate troubleshooting path; changing those values does not increase a database quota or free server storage.
Do not make table repair the default response
WordPress discusses database repair in other error contexts. A full-disk condition must first be resolved at the storage or quota layer, and any database action should follow a backup. Repairing tables while the server cannot write safely can make recovery harder.

Do not expose debugging to visitors
Use logging with display disabled when diagnostics are necessary, protect the resulting files, and remove temporary settings afterward. Publicly readable logs can disclose operational and personal information.
Do not buy generic cleanup or repair software as a first fix
A desktop cleanup utility, replacement drive, or generic database-repair product cannot directly correct a provider-side quota, temporary-directory limit, or database-server filesystem condition. Establish the host-side cause first.
When changing hosts or plans is justified
If the provider confirms that the site has outgrown its database quota, or the same limit recurs after legitimate cleanup and optimization, discuss a higher quota or a managed MySQL/MariaDB service with that provider. Make the decision only after the constraint is identified; moving hosts will not fix an unrelated credentials, network, or database-service outage.
