Then isolate one setting at a time, confirm the installed game version and rendering API, and run the official checks: clean-install the graphics driver, verify the game files, disable overlays, and close unnecessary background applications. Do not switch DirectX or plan a hardware upgrade until you know which version and symptom you have.
Start by recording the state that produced the problem
Changing several options at once makes troubleshooting guesswork. Before touching another setting, write down the information that describes the failing configuration. The same details are also what CD PROJEKT RED requests when you report a visual issue.

- Game version: read the version number on the main menu.
- Symptom: distinguish low frame rates, stutter, long loading times, blur, flicker, texture problems, other artifacts, or a crash.
- Rendering API: note whether the installation currently offers or uses DirectX 11 or DirectX 12.
- Recent changes: list every graphics option changed, including resolution, upscaling, ray tracing, reflections, shadows, hair effects, and frame-generation options if present.
- Mods and tools: record whether mods, trainers, console commands, overlays, monitoring software, or injectors are active.
- Reproduction: note whether the problem appears everywhere or only in a repeatable location, weather condition, cutscene, or save.
Take a screenshot for an image defect. For performance, record a short video if possible and note the scene, resolution, and settings. This creates a before-and-after reference and prevents a later change from erasing useful evidence.
Reverse the last change before changing anything else
Restore the previous value of the setting that immediately preceded the slowdown or visual defect. If you do not remember it, load a known baseline preset, then set the same output resolution you used before. Test the identical save or a repeatable scene for long enough to see the same behavior. Change one option per comparison and keep a short log of the result.

This method is diagnostic rather than a guaranteed fix. CD PROJEKT RED notes that frame rate varies with the scene, system configuration, graphics settings, and output resolution. A setting that is harmless in an interior may be expensive in Novigrad, during a storm, or in a combat scene. Comparing different locations can therefore make a correct change look ineffective.

If restoring the option does not help, leave it at the baseline and continue with software checks. Do not keep stacking new changes; each one makes the cause harder to identify.
Separate performance problems from image-quality problems
Low frame rates or uneven motion
Check output resolution first. Higher resolution significantly affects FPS, so a move from 1080p to 1440p or 4K can overwhelm the same GPU even when every other setting is unchanged. Confirm the resolution in the game and in any display-scaling or upscaling menu before judging another option.

There is no universally best preset because the useful compromise depends on your CPU, GPU, VRAM, resolution, game version, and API.

Stutter or hitching
Stutter can come from a setting change, an overlay, background activity, a driver transition, or a location-specific asset. Test with overlays disabled and unnecessary applications closed, then compare a repeatable route rather than relying on how the menu feels. A high average FPS does not rule out intermittent stalls; note when the hitch occurs and whether it repeats in the same place.
Long loading times
Keep the resolution and graphics settings fixed while checking storage and background activity. The official performance guidance includes closing unnecessary applications, including monitoring and antivirus or anti-malware software where appropriate. Temporarily stopping a scan for a controlled test can identify interference; restore normal protection afterward. If only one save or location loads slowly, preserve that save for a support report instead of overwriting it.
Blur, flicker, missing detail, or other artifacts
Treat a visual defect separately from an FPS drop. Capture the screen before changing multiple options, and record resolution, upscaling mode, API, game version, and mod status. A screenshot that includes the affected scene is more useful than a menu photograph. If the defect disappears after reversing one option, keep that result in your notes; if it persists, continue without assuming that a performance setting caused it.
Crashes after a graphics change
Revert the last option and test without overlays or mods. Record whether the crash happens at launch, when loading a save, when entering a particular area, or after changing the API. Do not repeatedly load a potentially corrupted save while troubleshooting; keep a copy for escalation.

Use the official performance sequence
When low FPS, stutter, or long loads remain after the reversible test, follow this order. Perform one stage at a time so you can identify the change that helped.
- Clean-install the graphics driver. Use the clean-install procedure supplied by your GPU manufacturer. Select the clean or fresh-install option when the installer offers it, reboot, and retest the same scene. A clean installation is different from merely installing over the existing driver.
- Consider a driver rollback when timing points to an update. If the problem began immediately after a driver update, CD PROJEKT RED’s performance guidance says to try the previous driver version and report the issue. Use the vendor’s official package and keep a record of the versions compared.
- Verify the game files through your launcher. Use the launcher’s installed-game management command named Verify, Verify integrity, Repair, or an equivalent. The process checks damaged or missing files and may redownload them. Do not interrupt it, and allow the launcher to finish before starting the game.
- Disable overlays. Turn off overlays from chat, storefront, recording, or performance-monitoring applications, including Discord, Ubisoft Connect, or GOG Galaxy overlays when they are enabled. Restart the game after changing the overlay setting.
- Close unnecessary applications. Exit browsers, recording tools, hardware monitors, RGB utilities, and other programs that consume CPU, GPU, memory, or disk time. The support guidance also calls out monitoring and antivirus or anti-malware applications as possible interference during testing; close or pause them only for a controlled check and restore protection afterward.
After each stage, test the same save, location, resolution, and settings. If verification reports damaged files or a clean driver fixes the issue, do not add more changes that could hide the cause.
Handle Screen Space Reflections and other costly options by version
Patch history matters. The February 2, 2023 Patch 4.01 notes say the PC Screen Space Reflections (SSR) setting was fixed and warn that players who had previously set SSR to High may notice a performance impact. That is useful historical context for a post-change slowdown on an affected version; it is not evidence that SSR explains every current performance problem.

If SSR was the setting you changed, compare its prior value with High and lower values in the same scene. Record the game version in your notes, because a result observed on Patch 4.01 cannot automatically be generalized to a later build. Apply the same one-change method to reflections, ray-traced effects, shadows, volumetric effects, and upscaling: test the visual result and the frame-time behavior separately.

When an option offers several upscaling modes, keep output resolution fixed while comparing modes. Changing both resolution and upscaling at once prevents you from knowing which change affected clarity or speed. If an image becomes soft or shimmery, capture that result and return to the last acceptable combination rather than lowering every setting.
Check the DirectX choice against the installed version
Advice to “switch to DirectX 11” or “use DirectX 12” is not universally valid. CD PROJEKT RED says The Witcher 3 will run exclusively with DirectX 12 starting with its next update. The publisher’s current support intake still lists both DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 for the versions it accepts, so the correct choice depends on the build installed on your PC and the timing of that update.

Patch 4.03 included a historical DirectX 11 crash fix for certain AMD GPUs and added Intel Xe Super Sampling. Those notes explain why an older troubleshooting page may mention a DX11-specific crash or XeSS, but they do not guarantee the same behavior on every later version or configuration.

CD PROJEKT RED announced that the following minimum requirements begin with the next update. They describe the supported or tested baseline for that update, not a promise of a particular FPS at a particular resolution.

The announcement says the game will use DirectX 12 exclusively from that next update and identifies Windows 11 as the minimum required operating system for the supported or tested configuration. The expanded requirements information clarifies that Windows 10 is not guaranteed to stop running immediately with the update, but the publisher will no longer develop or test on Windows 10. Therefore, do not call an operating-system or hardware upgrade necessary without comparing the reader’s actual CPU, GPU, VRAM, RAM, storage, Windows edition, game version, and target resolution.
Meeting a minimum does not make every setting appropriate. Resolution, scene complexity, API, and graphics options still change FPS. Conversely, a system below an announced minimum may run an earlier build acceptably at reduced settings. Diagnose the current symptom before spending money on a component.
Use a clean test configuration when mods or overlays are involved
Mods can alter assets, scripts, shaders, and rendering behavior, while overlays can hook into the game. Disable them for one controlled test, record that they were disabled, and compare the same save or scene. If the issue disappears, re-enable modifications one at a time to identify the conflict. Do not delete a modded save; keep a backup in case support needs it.
When a visual issue appears only with a particular mod, report that fact accurately instead of describing the installation as unmodified. Support asks whether mods, trainers, or console commands were used. A truthful status helps distinguish a base-game regression from a modified installation.
Escalate with evidence that support can use
Update an older game version first when the launcher offers an update. If the problem remains, use CD PROJEKT RED’s official visual-issue intake for artifacts, blur, flicker, or other image defects. Include the following in the form:
- Platform or store used to install the game.
- Exact game version shown in the main menu.
- Rendering API option, including whether the installation uses DirectX 11 or DirectX 12.
- Whether mods, trainers, or console commands were used.
- Screenshot showing the defect, with the affected scene visible.
- Save data when the problem is limited to a particular location or quest.
- DxDiag report when requested, so Windows and driver details accompany the report.
For performance reports, add a short video if possible, describe the repeatable location, and attach the relevant save when the slowdown occurs only there. State what changed, which official checks you completed, and which driver versions you compared. Avoid sending a long list of unrelated tweaks; a concise timeline is easier to reproduce.
A practical decision tree
- Did one setting change immediately precede the problem? Restore it and retest the same scene. If the symptom clears, keep the prior value and test alternatives one at a time.
- Is the problem an FPS drop, stutter, or long load? Confirm resolution, then run the clean-driver, file-verification, overlay, and background-application checks in that order.
- Is it blur, flicker, or another artifact? Capture a screenshot, record resolution, upscaling, API, version, and mods, then isolate the changed visual option.
- Did the issue start after a driver update? Compare the previous vendor driver and include that timing in a report if the rollback helps.
- Are you considering an API switch? Check the installed version first. DX11 and DX12 advice differs between the currently accepted builds and the announced next-update, DX12-only configuration.
- Does the PC fall below the next-update minimums? Treat that as compatibility context, not an automatic diagnosis. Compare the actual hardware and target resolution before deciding whether an upgrade is warranted.
- Does the issue survive a clean, documented test? Escalate with the version, API, platform, mod status, screenshot or video, save, and DxDiag requested by support.
Keep the final working configuration in a written note. It gives you a known baseline for future driver or game updates and makes any later regression easier to identify.
