Start by checking the complete hexadecimal code. “0x8007042” is one digit short of the codes commonly associated with Windows Update and Windows Firewall. Windows Update troubleshooting generally applies to 0x80070422, while the firewall-related variant is 0x8007042c. The correct fix depends on the final digit and on which Windows 7 component failed.

Copy the entire message, identify whether it appeared in Windows Update, Microsoft Store, sign-in, or Windows Firewall, and then follow the matching service checks below. Do not apply firewall repairs to an update error or treat both complete codes as the same problem.

What the 0x8007042 error means in Windows 7

The displayed code is ambiguous as written. A Microsoft Q&A thread titled “Error 0x8007042” records a user who could not change the Windows Update service startup setting, but that thread does not establish a unique official meaning for the truncated code. The missing final digit matters because nearby codes identify different Windows components.

Complete code to confirm Likely component Typical symptom First supported direction
0x80070422 Windows Update and related services Updates fail, or a service startup setting cannot be changed Check Windows Update, BITS, and Cryptographic Services; then reset update components if necessary
0x8007042c Windows Firewall and networking Windows Firewall will not start or reports that it cannot change settings Check firewall and networking services, including Network List Service
0x8007042 with no further digit Not established Depends on the application that displayed it Recover the complete code and the exact action that triggered it

The same first seven characters can therefore lead to different repairs. Treat the incomplete version as a clue to investigate, not as a diagnosis.

Confirm the complete message before changing services

  1. Reproduce the error once. Note the window title, the button you clicked, and whether the failure occurred while checking for updates, installing one, opening Microsoft Store, signing in, or opening Windows Firewall.
  2. Copy every character. Include the 0x prefix and all digits that follow it. If the message is in a dialog, select the text and copy it; otherwise write it down exactly.
  3. Check for a second code. Windows sometimes displays a short description followed by a more complete hexadecimal value in the details or error-history view.
  4. Record the timing. Write down whether the problem began after a restart, an interrupted update, a service change, or a security-software change. This information helps distinguish a service-state problem from a damaged update cache.
  5. Use an administrator account. The service changes in this guide require administrative permission. If Windows displays a User Account Control prompt, verify that you intended to open the management tool before approving it.

If the final digit remains unavailable, start with observation rather than a broad registry edit or a firewall reset. The component named in the error message is more reliable than a guessed interpretation of a truncated code.

Prepare a safe troubleshooting session

Service changes affect Windows startup and update behavior, so make the session reversible.

  • Save open documents and close installers, browsers, and other programs that may be using Windows Update or networking.
  • Write down each service’s original startup setting before changing it. You can restore that setting if the original symptom was unrelated.
  • Change only the service named in the matching branch. Do not disable several services at once; doing so makes the cause harder to identify and can create new failures.
  • If the computer is managed by an employer or school, check with the administrator before changing service startup settings. A policy may intentionally prevent changes.
  • Keep the complete error text and any service error number. You may need those details if the manual repair does not work.

Fix the Windows Update branch: 0x80070422

Use this branch when the complete code is 0x80070422, the message concerns Windows Update, or the failure is clearly tied to changing the Windows Update service. Microsoft Q&A guidance identifies three services to inspect: Windows Update, Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS), and Cryptographic Services.

Open the Services console

  1. Press Windows key + R to open the Run dialog.
  2. Type services.msc and press Enter.
  3. If Windows asks for permission, choose Yes. The Services window lists the services installed on the computer.
  4. Click the Name column so the list is easy to scan. Do not use a similarly named third-party service.

Inspect Windows Update

  1. Find Windows Update and double-click it.
  2. Read the Service status and Startup type fields before changing anything.
  3. If the service is disabled or stopped, use the Startup type menu in Properties to choose an appropriate enabled startup mode, then select Start. Windows may reject a setting that conflicts with local policy; record that response instead of repeatedly forcing it.
  4. Select Apply, then OK. Close and reopen the Properties dialog if you need to verify that the setting was saved.

Do not assume that a stopped service is automatically defective. Some services stop when idle. The important test is whether Windows Update can start the service when an update operation requires it and whether the service remains available long enough to complete that operation.

Inspect Background Intelligent Transfer Service

  1. In the Services list, open Background Intelligent Transfer Service.
  2. Check its startup setting and current status. If it is disabled or stopped while an update is waiting, use Properties to select an appropriate enabled startup mode and choose Start.
  3. Apply the change and note any error text. A dependency or permissions error is evidence for the next troubleshooting branch; it is not a reason to delete registry entries.

BITS transfers update files in the background. A Windows Update service that appears available can still fail when BITS cannot run, so test both services rather than changing only the one named in the first dialog.

Inspect Cryptographic Services

  1. Open Cryptographic Services in the same console.
  2. Check whether it is disabled or stopped. If so, choose an appropriate enabled startup mode in Properties and select Start.
  3. Apply the setting, close the dialog, and return to the Services list.

Cryptographic Services participates in validating update files and certificates. If it refuses to start, preserve the exact Windows error and the service’s dependency information for escalation rather than substituting a firewall repair.

Retry Windows Update

  1. Close the Services console.
  2. Open Control Panel, then choose System and Security and Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates or retry the operation that produced the code.
  4. Record whether the error code changed, whether a download began, and whether installation failed at a later stage. A new code identifies a different point of failure and should not be treated as proof that the original service check was wrong.

Reset update components only after the service checks

Microsoft Q&A guidance for the 0x80070422 family also discusses resetting Windows Update components. This is a separate operation from starting the three services. Use it only when the complete code and symptom point to Windows Update and the service checks did not resolve the failure.

Before a reset, record the exact error, the service statuses, and the installed Windows 7 edition and service-pack level. Use the reset procedure documented for that edition by Microsoft or by the support channel responsible for the computer. Procedures differ in the files and folders they rename or rebuild; copying a command sequence intended for another Windows version can create a second problem.

  • Do not interrupt a reset while Windows is modifying update-related files.
  • Do not delete folders or registry keys merely because their names contain “Update” or “Cryptographic.”
  • Restart the computer when the official procedure instructs you to do so, then test Windows Update once before making another change.
  • If the reset reports an access-denied, dependency, or file-in-use error, keep that exact message. It indicates that the reset did not complete and should not be repeated blindly.

Fix the Windows Firewall branch: 0x8007042c

Use this branch only when the complete code is 0x8007042c or the visible failure is specifically Windows Firewall. Microsoft Q&A identifies this as the firewall variant. Firewall troubleshooting is not a substitute for the Windows Update service sequence.

Check firewall and networking services

  1. Open the Services console with services.msc using an administrator account.
  2. Find the firewall service and inspect its status, startup setting, and displayed dependencies. If it is stopped or disabled, use its Properties dialog to choose an appropriate enabled startup mode and select Start.
  3. Inspect the networking services listed as dependencies or named in the error. Do not change unrelated services simply because they are stopped.
  4. Apply each documented change separately and record the result.

Restart Network List Service

Microsoft Q&A MVP S. Sengupta gives this specific instruction: “In the Services manager, locate Network List Service. Right-click it and choose Restart.”

  1. In Services, locate Network List Service.
  2. Right-click it and choose Restart. If Restart is unavailable, check whether the service is already stopped and use Start only if the service’s Properties and dependencies permit it.
  3. Wait for the status to return to Running, then close the Services window.
  4. Open Control Panel, choose System and Security, then Windows Firewall, and test the original action.

If Network List Service will not restart, capture the exact service error and the dependency names shown in Properties. Avoid disabling IPv6 as a first response; the available guidance does not establish that change as a repair for this Windows 7 case.

If the message appeared in Microsoft Store or another component

A Store, sign-in, or application dialog can display a similar-looking truncated value without proving that Windows Update or Windows Firewall is responsible. Return to the first step and identify the complete code and the application that produced it.

Do not start and stop update or firewall services at random when the failure is confined to another component. For an application-specific error, preserve the application name, the full text, and the action that triggered it. Those details determine whether the Windows service branches in this guide are relevant.

What to do when a service will not start

A failed service start is useful diagnostic information. In the service’s Properties dialog, note the startup type, the Dependencies tab, and the exact error Windows displays. Then use this sequence:

  1. Confirm that you opened the intended service, not a similarly named entry.
  2. Check whether a dependency is stopped or disabled. Inspect that dependency separately and record its status before changing it.
  3. Retry the start once after correcting a clearly disabled required dependency.
  4. If the same error returns, stop making configuration changes and preserve the message, code, dependency list, and service name.
  5. Use those details with official Windows support documentation or the administrator responsible for the installation.

Repeated attempts can obscure the original failure and may leave several services with altered startup settings. Registry-key deletion and broad service disabling are especially risky because the available evidence does not establish them as appropriate first-line fixes for this case.

Recovery when manual checks do not resolve the error

If the complete code is confirmed, the relevant services are configured correctly, and the error persists, move to supported recovery rather than adding unrelated tweaks.

  • Use official Windows installation media appropriate to the installed edition and service-pack level if the support procedure calls for repair files.
  • Follow Microsoft documentation for that exact Windows 7 edition. A procedure for another release may use different service names, paths, or repair tools.
  • If the computer is managed, provide the administrator with the full code, symptom, service statuses, dependency errors, and the time the issue began.
  • Do not assume that any generic “repair” disc or downloaded script is suitable. The available guidance does not verify a current Windows 7 download path, so no particular download should be promised here.

Keep a record of every change. If a later repair requires restoring the original startup configuration, that record is safer than relying on memory.

Decision checklist

  • Code ends in 22 and the symptom is Windows Update: inspect Windows Update, BITS, and Cryptographic Services, retry, then consider an edition-appropriate component reset.
  • Code ends in 2c and the symptom is Windows Firewall: inspect firewall and networking services, restart Network List Service, and retest Firewall.
  • Only 0x8007042 is visible: recover the missing digit and identify the affected component before selecting a branch.
  • A service refuses to start: save the exact service error and dependencies; do not jump to registry deletion or IPv6 changes.
  • Manual work still fails: use official installation media or support documentation matched to the installed edition and service pack.
