If Windows 10 shows 0x80070057 while installing an update, the usual causes are corrupted update files, permissions, or an incorrect system configuration. The code in the supplied title, 0X080070057, is a malformed version of the same searchable error. Start with the Windows Update troubleshooter, then run System File Checker and DISM before clearing the update cache. If the message appeared while installing or updating Microsoft Edge, use the Edge-specific procedure instead: in that context Microsoft describes the code as an invalid parameter.

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says it no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10 after that date, although existing PCs continue to run. The repair steps below are still useful for update components and application installation failures, but they cannot restore discontinued support.

Where the error appeared What Microsoft’s description means Best starting point Dependency or hardware concern
Windows Update Corrupted files, permission issues, or an incorrect system configuration Windows Update troubleshooter, then SFC and DISM Online DISM normally uses Windows Update; an alternate repair source may be needed if Windows Update is broken
Microsoft Edge installation or update Invalid parameters supplied during installation or updating Clear the temporary-folder contents and retry the official Edge download No special hardware is required
Installation or recovery media workflow The code is being raised by that particular setup process, so its surrounding message matters Read the complete setup message before changing Windows Update components Some installation or recovery workflows require USB media

Write down the full message and the action that triggered it. “The parameter is incorrect 0x80070057” during an update is a different troubleshooting branch from the same code during an Edge setup.

Prepare before changing system files

  • Sign in with an administrator account. SFC, DISM, and service-control commands require elevation.
  • Save open work and create a backup of important files. The cache procedure removes temporary update files, not personal documents, but a backup protects against unrelated storage or power problems.
  • Restart Windows once. A pending restart can leave update files or services in a half-finished state.
  • Check that the system drive has usable free space and that the network connection is stable. If you use a VPN, disconnect it temporarily while testing Windows Update.
  • If third-party security software is installed, check whether it is blocking the update service. Do not leave protection disabled permanently; re-enable it after the test.

These checks do not prove the cause, but they remove common conditions that can make a valid repair appear to fail.

Fix Windows Update error 0x80070057 step by step

1. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter

On current Windows 10 builds, Microsoft directs users to the automated troubleshooter in the Get Help app.

  1. Open Get Help from the Start menu.
  2. Search for Windows Update troubleshooter.
  3. Run the guided checks and allow the app to apply any suggested repair.
  4. Restart if Get Help requests it, then open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and select Check for updates.

Older Windows 10 interfaces expose the same diagnostic area at Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot. Choose the Windows Update troubleshooter, apply its recommendations, and retry the update. If the troubleshooter reports that it could not repair the problem, continue with the command-line checks rather than repeatedly running the same scan.

2. Repair protected system files with System File Checker

SFC checks protected Windows files and replaces damaged copies when a suitable local copy is available.

  1. Open Start and type Command Prompt.
  2. Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  3. Enter the command below and press Enter:
sfc /scannow

Leave the window open until verification reaches 100 percent. The result normally falls into one of three useful categories:

  • “Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.” SFC found no protected-file corruption; proceed to DISM or the cache step if the update still fails.
  • “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them.” Restart Windows and retry the update.
  • “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.” Use DISM next, restart, and run sfc /scannow again. DISM can repair the component store that SFC relies on.

Do not close the elevated window just because the percentage appears to pause. Large repairs can take time, and interrupting the process can leave the check incomplete.

3. Repair the Windows image with DISM

Deployment Image Servicing and Management repairs the Windows component store. In an elevated Command Prompt, run:

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

The online form normally obtains replacement components through Windows Update. If Windows Update itself is the damaged part, Microsoft advises using an alternate repair source with /Source:... and /LimitAccess so DISM does not depend on Windows Update.

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth /Source:<matching-repair-source> /LimitAccess

The source must match the installed Windows edition and architecture. A mismatched or incomplete source can produce another servicing error, so use installation media or a known-good source intended for the same Windows release. After DISM finishes, restart and run SFC again:

sfc /scannow

Running SFC after DISM is useful because DISM repairs the source repository while SFC checks the protected files currently in use.

4. Rebuild the Windows Update download cache

Microsoft notes that “Corrupt update files in the cache can cause errors.” Clearing the contents of the SoftwareDistribution folder forces Windows Update to download fresh temporary files. This does not erase personal files, installed applications, or your update history record, although previously downloaded update packages will need to be downloaded again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open an elevated Command Prompt.
  2. Stop the Windows Update service:
net stop wuauserv
  1. Leave the Command Prompt open. In File Explorer, browse to C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution.
  2. Delete the contents inside that folder. If Windows says a file is in use, confirm that the Windows Update service is stopped and retry; do not delete the SoftwareDistribution folder itself.
  3. Return to the elevated Command Prompt and start the service:
net start wuauserv
  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and select Check for updates.

The first scan after the reset can take longer because Windows must recreate its working folders and download packages again.

5. Retry under clean, ordinary conditions

After the repair sequence, connect to a reliable network, keep the PC on AC power, and retry the update without a VPN. Confirm that the system drive has enough free space for the update and that the restart requested by Windows has actually occurred. If third-party security software is blocking the service, consult its documented temporary-exclusion procedure and restore normal protection immediately after testing.

Fix 0x80070057 during Microsoft Edge installation or updating

When Edge is the program displaying the message, do not begin by resetting Windows Update. Microsoft describes this context as invalid parameters during installation or update, so use the application path first.

  1. Press Windows key + R, enter %temp%, and press Enter.
  2. Select the temporary files shown in that folder and delete them. Skip files Windows reports as currently in use.
  3. Close any Edge setup window that is still open and restart Windows if the installer requested a reboot.
  4. Download the current Microsoft Edge installer from Microsoft’s official Edge download page, then run it again.
  5. If the installer fails again, record whether the message appears during download, extraction, or installation. That detail distinguishes a temporary-file problem from a parameter or permissions problem and is useful when seeking Microsoft support.

Clearing %temp% is not the same as clearing the Windows Update cache. Use the SoftwareDistribution procedure only for the Windows Update branch.

What to do when the error remains

Check the sequence, not just the final code

If the code returns, note which step failed and capture the complete text. An SFC result that reports unrepairable files points toward component-store repair; a DISM error that says source files could not be found points toward an unsuitable or unavailable alternate source; an Edge installer failure after the temporary-folder cleanup belongs to the Edge branch rather than the Windows Update cache.

Use an alternate DISM source when online repair cannot download files

The online DISM command depends on Windows Update for replacement components. When the update service is itself unavailable or corrupted, repeat the repair with a matching source and /LimitAccess. Do not guess at a source path or use media for a different edition. If you do not have matching media, stop before applying a random image; an incorrect source can create additional servicing failures.

Recognize the Windows 10 lifecycle limit

Microsoft’s stated end-of-support date is October 14, 2025. Existing Windows 10 PCs continue to run, but Microsoft no longer supplies free software updates from Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes after that date. Therefore, a successful repair of the update components does not mean a post-support PC will receive new Windows 10 feature or security updates. If the message appears while seeking a service that is no longer offered to your edition, verify the edition’s support status before repeating repairs.

Repair choices compared

Option Failure context Invasiveness Relies on Windows Update? Hardware requirement
Get Help or legacy Windows Update troubleshooter Windows Update diagnostics Lowest; automated checks and guided changes Uses Windows components; it may not resolve a damaged update service None beyond the PC
sfc /scannow Corrupted protected system files Low; scans and repairs protected files No direct download requirement None
Online DISM Component-store corruption Moderate; services the running Windows image Normally yes None
DISM with /Source:... and /LimitAccess Component-store corruption when Windows Update cannot supply files Moderate; source must match the installation No, when a valid alternate source is available Matching installation media or another valid source; some recovery workflows use USB media
SoftwareDistribution cache reset Corrupted downloaded update files Moderate; stops a service and removes temporary packages Requires a new download for the next update attempt None
Edge temporary-folder cleanup and installer retry Edge installation or update invalid-parameter failure Low; removes temporary files No Windows Update repair is required None

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Searching for the malformed code only. Use 0x80070057 when searching Microsoft guidance; the title’s 0X080070057 contains an extra zero.
  • Using the Edge procedure for Windows Update. The code’s meaning is context-specific. Clear %temp% for an Edge installer failure, not as a substitute for repairing Windows Update.
  • Running commands without elevation. A normal Command Prompt can return access-denied messages even when the command itself is correct.
  • Deleting the wrong folder. For the cache reset, stop Windows Update first and delete only the contents of C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution.
  • Using an unmatched DISM source. A source from another Windows edition or release may not contain the components your installation needs.
  • Expecting SFC alone to repair every case. SFC checks protected files; DISM repairs the component store that supplies those files.
  • Repeating repairs after support has ended. Component repair can fix local corruption, but it cannot make Microsoft provide Windows 10 updates that are no longer offered.

Practical completion checklist

  • The code was normalized to 0x80070057 and the triggering context was identified.
  • The Get Help or legacy Windows Update troubleshooter was run.
  • sfc /scannow completed in an elevated Command Prompt.
  • DISM completed online, or with a verified alternate source and /LimitAccess.
  • The Windows Update service was stopped before the SoftwareDistribution contents were removed, then started again.
  • The computer was restarted and the update was retried on a stable connection.
  • For an Edge failure, %temp% was cleared and the official installer was downloaded again.
  • The October 14, 2025 Windows 10 support cutoff was considered before treating a missing update as a local repair problem.
