If a Ubisoft PC game says ubiorbitapi_r2.dll is missing, restore the file through the game’s official launcher or storefront. Verify the installation in Ubisoft Connect (or Steam if you bought the game there), restart the launcher, and reinstall the complete game or Ubisoft Connect if verification cannot recover it. Do not download the DLL from a mirror, copy it into a Windows system folder, or run regsvr32 as a generic fix.
What ubiorbitapi_r2.dll is
ubiorbitapi_r2.dll is associated with an older Ubisoft Game Launcher, formerly known as Uplay, and is used by some Ubisoft PC games. It is a game or launcher component, not a standard Windows system DLL. The filename alone does not identify one universal download: the correct copy must match the game, launcher build, and installation that produced the error.

Windows may display messages such as “ubiorbitapi_r2.dll is missing from your computer,” “The code execution cannot proceed,” or “The program can’t start because ubiorbitapi_r2.dll was not found.” These messages mean the game could not load a required component. They do not, by themselves, prove that Windows is damaged or that the computer is infected.
Why the error appears
- Incomplete or damaged game files: an interrupted download, disk error, failed update, or corrupted installation can leave the component absent or unusable.
- A launcher migration or update: older Ubisoft titles can depend on components associated with the former Uplay/Game Launcher while being started through a newer launcher.
- Security-software quarantine: antivirus or endpoint software may have removed a legitimate game file. The quarantine record is the place to check; downloading a replacement from an unrelated site is not a safe substitute.
- Storefront mismatch: a game installed by Steam must be repaired through Steam’s files, while a Ubisoft Connect installation should be repaired in Ubisoft Connect. Repairing a different copy may leave the affected installation unchanged.
- A different missing dependency: an error naming
MSVCP*.dll,VCRUNTIME*.dll, orapi-ms-win-crt-*.dllpoints to a Microsoft Visual C++ runtime issue rather than this Ubisoft component.
The exact game, launcher build, Windows edition, and storefront determine which repair path applies. Start with the source that actually owns the installed game.

First, record the exact error and installation source
- Copy the filename exactly as shown. Confirm that it is
ubiorbitapi_r2.dll, including the spelling and ther2suffix. - Note the affected game and whether it starts from Ubisoft Connect, Steam, or another legitimate storefront.
- Write down what changed immediately before the failure, such as a game update, launcher update, reinstall, disk move, or security-software alert.
- Do not delete random DLLs or make changes to
C:WindowsSystem32orC:WindowsSysWOW64while diagnosing the problem.
This short record prevents a common mistake: repairing one installation while launching a second copy in a different library.
Fix 1: verify the game in Ubisoft Connect
Use this route when Ubisoft Connect manages the affected installation. The wording of menus can vary slightly by launcher version, but the operation is the game’s file-verification or repair command.
- Open Ubisoft Connect and sign in to the account that owns the game.
- Open your games library and select the affected title.
- Open the game’s Properties or Manage menu.
- Choose the option labeled Verify files, Verify game files, Repair, or equivalent.
- Allow the check to finish. If Connect reports missing or damaged files, let it redownload or rebuild them completely.
- Restart Ubisoft Connect after the operation and launch the game from the library.
Keep the launcher open and avoid shutting down the computer while files are being replaced. A successful verification that downloads the missing component indicates that the original game installation was incomplete or damaged. If the check completes without downloading anything and the same message remains, continue with the next section instead of repeatedly running the same check.
Fix 2: verify the game through Steam
Use Steam’s verification when Steam installed or maintains the game. Ubisoft Connect may still open during launch, but Steam remains the source that can restore files in its library.

- Right-click the affected Ubisoft game and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to compare the installation and reacquire any missing or damaged files.
- When the process finishes, restart Steam and Ubisoft Connect if both are used, then try the game again.
Steam may report that files were reacquired without identifying the DLL by name. That is normal for a file-integrity operation; the useful result is whether the game starts after the replacement completes.
Fix 3: restart both the launcher and the computer
Close the game and exit the launcher rather than merely closing its window. If the launcher remains in the notification area, use its exit command, then reopen it. Restart Windows before testing again. This gives the launcher a clean session after verification and ensures that a file held open by a previous process is not still being used.
Do not treat a restart as a replacement for verification. It is a follow-up step after the official client has checked or restored the installation.
Fix 4: reinstall the complete matching installation
If verification fails, stops with an error, or reports no repair while the message persists, reinstall the complete game from the legitimate storefront. Reinstalling one DLL is less reliable because the game may require a specific matching set of files and launcher components.

Reinstall the game
- Back up any local saves or configuration files that the game does not synchronize, using the game’s documented save location when known.
- Uninstall the affected game through the storefront that installed it.
- Restart Windows if the uninstaller requests it.
- Install the game again from your Ubisoft Connect library or the Steam library where you purchased it.
- Allow every game and launcher update to finish before starting the title.
Reinstall Ubisoft Connect when the launcher itself is suspect
If several Ubisoft titles fail with launcher-related messages, or the Connect client cannot complete verification, reinstall Ubisoft Connect through Ubisoft’s official installer or support route. Keep the game installation only if the launcher offers a supported way to detect it; otherwise, follow the client’s own library-management instructions. The goal is to restore the complete, matching installation rather than to place a loose DLL in a system directory.
Check antivirus quarantine before reinstalling again
Open your security software’s quarantine, detection history, or blocked-items view and search for the exact filename. If it shows that ubiorbitapi_r2.dll was removed from the game directory, use the security product’s documented restore process only when you are certain the game came from a legitimate source. Then run the official game or launcher verification so the file is restored from that installation.
If the security product removes the file again, do not keep downloading replacements. Record the detection name, the game path, and the time of the event, and use the security product’s support guidance together with Ubisoft’s support process. A repeated quarantine event needs to be assessed by the security software and the game publisher; an unknown DLL mirror cannot establish that the file belongs to your particular game build.

- Do not download
ubiorbitapi_r2.dllfrom a DLL mirror, forum attachment, or file-sharing page. - Do not copy it into
C:WindowsSystem32orC:WindowsSysWOW64. - Do not copy a file from another computer or another Ubisoft game and assume it is interchangeable.
- Do not run
regsvr32as a generic repair. This component is not repaired by registering an arbitrary downloaded copy.
Those approaches can introduce an untrusted file, create a version mismatch, or leave the actual game installation damaged. Official verification and a complete reinstall keep the file tied to the game and launcher that need it.

Do you need to repair Microsoft Visual C++?
Only repair or reinstall the Microsoft Visual C++ runtime when the error names a Microsoft runtime file such as MSVCP*.dll, VCRUNTIME*.dll, or api-ms-win-crt-*.dll. Those filenames are a different diagnosis. Installing a Visual C++ package is not a specific fix for an error that explicitly names ubiorbitapi_r2.dll.
If both messages appear, handle them separately: first restore the Ubisoft game or launcher component through verification or reinstallation, then follow Microsoft’s official runtime guidance for the separately named Visual C++ dependency.

The game still shows the same message immediately
Confirm that you launched the same copy you repaired. Check the storefront’s displayed installation location and compare it with the shortcut or launcher entry you use. Then restart the launcher and Windows once more. If the message is unchanged, proceed to a complete reinstall rather than manually replacing the DLL.

Do not override the result by downloading a file from elsewhere. Check whether security software removed it after verification and whether the game is actually managed by another storefront. If both checks are inconclusive, reinstall the game from its official library and document the exact error for Ubisoft support.

The problem began after moving the game to another drive
Run verification after the move and confirm that the launcher’s recorded installation path matches the new location. If the client cannot repair the moved copy, reinstalling from the same storefront is the dependable next step.
Only one older Ubisoft title fails
Use that title’s own storefront entry for verification and provide the game name, exact message, and launcher version when contacting Ubisoft. An older game may require a title-specific support instruction that cannot be inferred from the DLL filename alone.

Verify one affected title first. If the Connect client cannot complete repairs across titles, reinstall Ubisoft Connect through the official route and then test a single game before changing multiple installations at once.

Escalate after a clean verification and a complete reinstall fail, or when the launcher cannot identify the installation. Include:
- the exact
